Hello & Welcome!

Fresh new month, fresh new start, fresh new habits. Jump right into August! Reset & refresh to become a healthier version of yourself! Summers well under way and the kids are out for the summer. Not an easy time to navigate healthy eating! Being mindful, planning ahead and few tweaks here and there it’s not impossible!

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating to LOSE or MAINTAIN. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have a WOW (Weigh On Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable). It’s a journey, not a destination.

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and generally eat twice a day. I try not to drink calories and have very little processed food or sugar. I meal plan, set my intentions daily and exercise most days.

Are you in?😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why? You can do it, if you really want too!

Morning all! I’ve sort of disappeared off the thread after I started reading a book about sport nutrition. I can’t work out how to fit all the carbs and protein I apparently need into my calorie controlled diet (and am going seriously over my calorie allowance in my attempts to do so)

In all fairness I haven’t made it to the chapter on exercise and weightloss yet, so may be there’s hope, but I’ll save you my tales of excess in the meantime 😂

(Just in case this sounds a little obsessive, my muscle mass percentage has actually been decreasing over the last few months in spite of the amount of exercise I’ve been doing and I get crazy carb cravings. Neither of those are good signs, so I really need to try and find a better balance)

TheRealHousewife · 08/08/2022 11:11

Good Morning All 🙂

Welcome to the thread @anonnancy and welcome back @PinkStarAtNight You’ve still lost Pink, which is great! 👍 Getting the daily water in does help @anonnancy , takes edge of hunger as sometimes we mistake thirsty for hunger and munch more.

No worries @SanFranBear .

Nooooo don’t quit @wannadisc0 , you’ll regret it. Have something to satisfy you during aunt flows visit but not that it totally derails you. I used to crave carbs massively so I know it’s really tough. Sending strength!

@Allthegoodnamestakken Thats great progress! 👍👏Keep going 😬

@HouseofHolbein It does get tougher the nearer we get to goal! You’ll get there!

Sorry to read you’ve got covid @ginsparkles. A massive well done on crossing your weight milestone! That’s fabulous!

Nothing much to report apart from another small .5 loss … here’s hoping it sticks when I WOW.

Menu
Meal 1 - Halloumi stir fry with red pepper, carrots, kale and butter beans.
Meal 2 - Pan fried naked fish, oven chips (small amount) peas, green beans and carrots.

Tea, Black coffee, water. Walnuts & small apple.
Exercise
Session 1 - Short Walk ✅
Session 2 - Yoga.

Cross posted … welcome back @CrimsonAlligator Its tough getting macros balanced, especially with cc. I try my best but I’m not always on point. I’m trying to maintain or even build muscle but not easy! Good luck!

Allthegoodnamestakken · 08/08/2022 11:30

@CrimsonAlligator I also find getting enough carbs and protein in to allow exercise is difficult. I tried low carb for a while as it really suits DH but after a few cross fit classes where I very near passed out and one where I did I am firmly back in the my body needs carbs camp. I would very much love to here any wisdom your book can offer 😂

fallfallfall · 08/08/2022 17:21

My muscle mass and even bone density is all over the place. SO I’m going to ignore most of the info until I’m at my goal weight and maintaining.

Does this count as a success? I ordered a pudding in Pizza Express (after a calorie counted salad) but the mascarpone part of the dessert was unavailable. So I chose to go without dessert entirely. Was that a win or just a lucky break?

fallfallfall · 08/08/2022 18:19

i wish there was an edit button ;), the graph was for you @CrimsonAlligator just so you know your not alone with the values jumping all over the place.
@anonnancy not sure if it was in my june or july post but i got myself (off amazon) a 1 liter motivational water bottle, it has the hours marked off so by 11am i know where i should be. i am however drinking 3 liters a day to get my hydration level up, which i really feel is contributing to my weight loss.
@TheRealHousewife :) i'm so happy to read that you again have had a good weight in. well deserved.
get well soon @ginsparkles and @GonnaGetGoingReturns
although i had seen 147.2 on saturday i was not expecting to see 146.6 this am, 3 lbs down this month as per the apple health graph. no insane fitness routine and nothing drastic with the meals/planning just portion control (so carbs/healthy fats/lean meats etc all on the menu).
the IF is so close to our usual routine it's been easy to incorporate, the pre breakfast am bike ride (due to the heat come mid day) most likely helps as well.

fallfallfall · 08/08/2022 18:20

the gods are speaking to you @Lizsmum. step away from the fast food counter.

Benjispruce4 · 08/08/2022 18:36

@GonnaGetGoingReturns yes without grains I would normally be hungry BUT I’m off work as I’m in school so I’m eating breakfast at about 8.30/9 so I’m fine until 1pm for lunch. At work I’m eating breakfast at 7am and no chance to eat until after 12. Also the heat makes cold yoghurt and berries very appealing and light.
D- tonight I made my tomato, garlicky fish stew and served with bulgar wheat.

Benjispruce4 · 08/08/2022 18:37

@fallfallfall great loss again. Well done!

MirandaWest · 08/08/2022 18:41

I did a 10k race yesterday - I have been struggling with running most of the year after COVID in March and an ankle issue from May. Plus putting on weight hasn't helped and so I’ve been needing to walk and stop during runs.

Yesterday I took it more slowly and got all the way round with no stopping! Am wondering whether the 2.5kg or so I’ve lost in the past few weeks has helped but anyway it is motivating me to keep on with what I’m doing.

Today has had a recovery run of 15 min and walks before work and at lunchtime. Have had a couple of sweets today but am intending that will be it for snacks.

Have the day off tomorrow so planning to go to the coast 😊

fallfallfall · 08/08/2022 18:43

@Benjispruce4 diet wise i wish i could embrace fish, i get really good weight loss the rare time i have it BUT damn i dislike most of it.

Benjispruce4 · 08/08/2022 22:55

That’s a shame. I love fish in all its forms.

SanFranBear · 08/08/2022 23:34

Just a quick pop on to say well done to all those posting losses today... especially RealHousewife as you've waited so long to see things heading downwards!

Bit more of an active day here than planned (swimming with DS and then an hour and a half walk with a friend) which felt great but I then inhaled more birthday chocs... didn't have your willpower, Lizsmum!

I'm also a huge fish and shellfish fan... 😋

ginsparkles · 09/08/2022 08:25

Morning lovely people ... the sun is shining and I'm ready for another day.

Snacked a little more than I should yesterday but went on a super long walk so hoping one compensates the other Smile

ginsparkles · 09/08/2022 08:27

Posted way to soon!

Anyhoo... todays plan of campaign is :

Lunch sweet chilli noodles with salad. Followed by apple and a yogurt

Dinner is Tuscan chicken pasta. This is a new recipe so I am hope that DD (who is very tricky with food) will enjoy it.

Hope everyone has a lovely day in the sunshine

CrimsonAlligator · 09/08/2022 10:21

Thanks for sharing that @fallfallfall . I know that scales can be pretty unreliable, but the consistent downward trend mine is showing on muscle mass does worry me a little bit.

@Allthegoodnamestakken , one of the main things I’ve learnt from the book so far is that it’s fine to do lower intensity exercise with muscles that are low in glycogen, e.g. if you exercise after fasting, or when you’re following a keto diet. If however you do higher intensity exercise (around 80% of max heart rate and higher) your body can’t get much fuel from fat stores, so if there’s not enough glycogen in your muscles, it will start breaking down muscle tissue for energy.

“Muscles breaking down” sounds dramatic, but it’s a normal process and as long as you eat enough protein, you will bounce back again. But the whole process can leave you feeling a bit faint at the time!

Also, if you take iron supplements, it’s best to take it either before or straight after exercise. Exercise releases a hormone that interferes with iron absorption and that peaks around 6-8 hours after you’ve exercised 🤓

Well done on completing your 10k race @MirandaWest ! I’ve heard that for every kilo you lose, you take about 3x as much pressure of your knees. So I’m sure your loss so far will have made a difference!

TheRealHousewife · 09/08/2022 11:01

Good morning 😊

Devine intervention @Lizsmum, listen to the gods 😬

@ginsparkles lovely menu! 😋

@SanFranBear I love seafood too... a bit weary of cockles & muscles though 😬

@fallfallfall great to read about your progress. I'm the same as in Ive not really changed my routine, trying to move a bit more but not massively. Long may it continue for us both 👍

@MirandaWest a big round of applause 👏 We'll done on the 10k! 🏅

Menu
Meal 1 - Home made courgette, leek & potato soup with cream cheese and tarragon.
Meal 2 - Large salad and bream.
Tea, black coffee, water.

Enjoy the sunshine ☀️

@CrimsonAlligator that’s always a worry of mine, I exercise before I eat, and sometimes it’s weights, sometimes cardio. It’s hard to know the right thing to do.

My preferred 9am gym time doesn’t have much in the way of cardio right now, so I’ve been doing weight training, but decided this morning I’d try and get to a spin class for some cardio - 6.30am class was tough and I kept yawning 😂

The PT made me laugh when he said sweating is just your fat cells crying 😆

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 09/08/2022 15:11

Just realised I didn't post yesterday's meals and today, I was sort of testing my food on Monday to see if I was ok after food poisoning (apart from minor diarrhoea nothing):

Monday B: granola, blueberries, Skyr yogurt and drizzle honey
L: 4 x crackerwheat, 2 with cheese and minestrone slim a soup
D: spinach and pesto pasta, spinach portion and mushrooms sauteed in butter plus parmesan
S: 1 x lemon drizzle Nak'd and nectarine and 1 x Itsu chocolate rice cake, oh and 2 rice tea light biscuits.

Tuesday B: same brekkie as Monday
L: 2 x cheese crackerwheat plus 2 garlic bread slices and minestrone slim a soup (garlic bread courtesy of DM who popped over)
S: 1 x apricot and 2 rice tea light biscuits.

2 x 20 minute walks one yesterday and 1 today.

@ginsparkles - I love your food choices.

@TheRealHousewife - I'd love to be able to like seafood but apart from scallops, and crabs claws in batter (can't think of anything else!) oh and caviar, it makes me heave. I do like salmon and some fish though.

Well done to everyone posting losses and @MirandaWest - excellent news on completing the 10K!

ImALittlePea · 09/08/2022 18:36

Sorry all I'm a bit absent at the moment. DH is off for the week so we're in full on holiday mode (even though we're no longer going away on holiday). I don't know how far off course I'm veering tbh, I'm still not having breakfast and we're walking a lot on days out, but I'm having more of everything that I try not to in the week. I suppose the teller will be on Friday, but I'm going to enjoy this week and not worry about the numbers. I also know that if we were going away I'd be having a far worse diet this week. Isn't it funny how we justify ourselves sometimes!?

So just wanted to say hi, I am skimming over the thread when I can but if I don't post much I haven't disappeared altogether and am still very much cheering you all on from behind my glass of wine 😁

SingaporeSlinky · 09/08/2022 20:07

Sorry if it’s been discussed before, but with the cost of utilities going through the roof, is anyone showering at the gym? I’m considering doing it from autumn but just thinking about the amount of stuff I’d need - towel, shampoo, conditioner, face wash, flannel, body wash, potentially flip flops, plus clean clothes.

fallfallfall · 09/08/2022 22:52

@SingaporeSlinky when we were building the house dh and i needed to use the community rec facilities to shower. we each had our own beach bag with the necessities in smaller sized bottles than the home supply. we also found showering at supper time a better time slot.

ginsparkles · 10/08/2022 06:43

@SingaporeSlinky I always shower at the gym if I am there, but to be honest I'm currently considering giving up my membership as I just don't get the opportunity to go as often as I think it needs to be worth it. As for showering I just have a shampoo and conditioner in my bag, the showers there have shower gel which is quite a nice one.

Todays WOW ... I'm not sure where I start this week as I didn't weigh after the gourmet trip, but I do know that before we went I was at 12st 1. Today it's 11.13 so I'll take that as a 2lb loss. I haven't been overly mindful of food, but haven't had any wine and am walking a lot more! Onwards and downwards everyone. Good luck all the wowers

HouseofHolbein · 10/08/2022 07:02

Morning! Just weighed in. Just over 1lb down on last Wednesday and just over 2lb down from the start of the month 😊

Slow and steady yet again 👍
