Hello & Welcome!

Fresh new month, fresh new start, fresh new habits. Jump right into August! Reset & refresh to become a healthier version of yourself! Summers well under way and the kids are out for the summer. Not an easy time to navigate healthy eating! Being mindful, planning ahead and few tweaks here and there it’s not impossible!

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating to LOSE or MAINTAIN. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have a WOW (Weigh On Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable). It’s a journey, not a destination.

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and generally eat twice a day. I try not to drink calories and have very little processed food or sugar. I meal plan, set my intentions daily and exercise most days.

Are you in?😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why? You can do it, if you really want too!

Well everyone it’s official I’m a senior, 65 yesterday and avoiding the scale BUT I did fine. Restaurant salad 410 cals, plus chicken breast, then half of a 500 cal dessert. Calories off google as it’s a chain restaurant. Ate a bit late into the evening 7:30pm.
i weigh in daily @milkfromthesleepycow exactly because the fluctuations keep me honest, acknowledging that my choices have consequences. But likewise I pan out to the long term data and focus on the trend.
trend for me has been 14 flat days. Time to get that downward drop going! New day and determined.

SanFranBear · 22/08/2022 19:25

Happy HAPPY birthday for yesterday, fallfall! Sounds like a great meal out and very disciplined for your special day!

I'm also a demon snacker, Afterglow - well, once I start, I can't stop and struggle a lot of the time as have fairly young DC who deserve to have a few treats in the house. I compromise by having a few, low calorie options in... like skinny bars, meringue nests, snack-a-jack rice cakes. Some days are just harder than others and I find if I've done some form of exercise, the cravings are easier to manager.

So glad your DH is OK, RealHousewife - I didn't know that about Mondays but can totally understand it.. Monday mornings are the pits. That tray of homegrown deliciousness will lift any spirits though - looks sooo good!

I've got my boozy festival coming up for the long weekend.. Will smuggle in some vodka but its expensive in the arena so can see me going significantly off plan! So determined to be healthy for the next few days...

ImALittlePea · 22/08/2022 19:49

Happy birthday @fallfallfall!

@Allthegoodnamestakken that burger sounds delicious - is it homemade or bought? Please share your source either way!

Today has been relatively on plan:
Lunch - houmous, cheddar and salad wrap
Dinner - minted lamb kebabs, homemade chips, big side salad and one flatbread

Plus tea and lots of water. Considering how much snacks had been sneaking their way back in, plus being a month into the holidays 😵‍💫 I'm quite impressed with myself for not succumbing today!

ImALittlePea · 22/08/2022 19:50

Glad your DH is ok @TheRealHousewife it's scary how quickly things can turn!

TheRealHousewife · 22/08/2022 20:22

A Belated Happy Birthday 🥳 @fallfallfall 🥳 Here’s hoping you were treated to lots of Birthday goodies/surprises!

Thank you for the kind words regarding my better half ❤️ It was (another) wake up call!

Today was my Week 2 weigh-in, I'm -2lbs so 6lbs overall!
Feels like a drop in the ocean right now but I'm still feeling positive. Keep reminding myself that time passes really quickly and I could look/feel completely different by Christmas!

fallfallfall · 22/08/2022 21:00

@TheRealHousewife sounds like your dh is in good hands.
the Monday info is really interesting and I was certainly not aware of it or surprised makes sense, same as heart attacks on the first snowfall (shoveling).
thanks everyone for the birthday wishes it was a relaxing pleasant day. Which included the basic am exercise (dog walk and bike ride), 6000+ steps, 45 minutes minimum of exercise and 550 active calories burned. I’ve been going well over these minimum settings but not increasing them.

MirandaWest · 22/08/2022 21:46

I did go for a walk - decided if I stayed at home I would probably find something to snack on so I had a good long walk and got back about 10 min before I needed to start work again.

In the end I walked 15km which was probably a little further than I intended to go but felt good and glad I did it.

Have gone over 27,000 steps today 😊

fallfallfall · 22/08/2022 21:52

impressive @MirandaWest , well planned!!

SanFranBear · 22/08/2022 22:13

That's brilliant, MirandaWest... well done!

Lizsmum · 22/08/2022 22:27

Happy Birthday @fallfallfall ! ⭐⭐⭐
And congratulations on reaching the best years of your life!

RadFad · 23/08/2022 08:36

I weighed in today instead of tomorrow as have a busy day tomorrow.
1lb lost 4lb total. Pleased with this.

I have done some meal prepping this week for lunches and going to make a couple of soups to freeze in portions. Feeling motivated and hoping my PMT week doesn't derail the hard work.

I need some exercise to improve my overall health. Has anyone done Bounce classes? I'm thinking about that for low impact as I have gout in my big toe and bad knees (you wouldn't believe I'm only 36 🤦🏻‍♀️).
I want to try some strength training at home but find lunges and squats hard with the gout/knee pain.

Well done! 6lb is great.
You describe similar to me. Im focusing on 1/2 stone goals and remembering each 1lb is closer to where I want to be. If I look at the whole amount I need to lose it's overwhelming.

SanFranBear · 23/08/2022 08:53

You've both definitely got the right idea, PurpleSky and RadFad and massive well done on your losses. I find setting the monthly goal really helps me stay focused and even though I have missed it a couple of times, I've also smashed it once or twice and it is such a motivator.

I've not heard of Bounce classes - are they on a trampoline or similar? With regards to low impact exercise, does swimming count? It's such a great way to exercise your whole body as well as supporting it so there's no real strain on any area - was a lifesaver when my knees went.

TheRealHousewife · 23/08/2022 09:01

Good Morning All 😊

@PurpleSky300 If you maintain slow steady consistent weight loss; by Christmas it will be totally transformative. Both for your health and your shape! Well done and Keep going 👍

@MirandaWest Thats a fantastic step count! Well done 👏

@RadFad Well done on your loss so far! Sorry to read you suffer gout, I’ve heard it’s very painful if not managed!

Focusing on smaller goals can be more motivating than looking at your end target. I love my weight loss apps for that reason. Being a bit of a geek graphs and numbers are my thing 😬

Menu
Meal 1 - Courgette, potato & leek soup. 3 GF Nairn crackers. Pear.
Meal 2 - Mini roast chicken dinner. Orange.
Tea, black coffee and water.

Exercise
Session 1 - Gentle stretching.
Session 2 - Hand weights.

The garden is loving the rain! Some vegetable plants are now nearly spent and I’m as sad about that as I was excited when they first bore fruit. Today I’m chopping them up with gratitude and putting them through the compost bin. Growing stuff is so rewarding and therapeutic… I’m sure it’s helping with restarting my weight loss too. Also several weeks ago I re-started taking in omega 3’s and I’m sure that’s helping as well!

Enjoy your day and whatever you do, do it with some oomph!

Found it hard to drag myself out of bed this morning (anxiety dreams as younger one gets her GCSE results on Thursday) but had a good intervals run before work.

And my running skorts are fitting better so my thighs must be reducing. Plus when I got back DH said he could tell there was less of my tummy which is also true.

Wont do as many steps today 😂

RadFad · 23/08/2022 09:48

@SanFranBear yes Bounce is on trampolines so keeps the impact off your knees.
Swimming is great but I feel too self conscious in my costume. Gym clothes hold everything in so much better 😅

CrimsonAlligator · 23/08/2022 10:37

Happy belated birthday @fallfallfall 🥳

@TheRealHousewife that situation with your DH sounds scary. What a relief that you caught it before it got any worse.

I went for a run yesterday, but ended up having to do a lot of walking as I came face to face with a group of wild ponies. The ponies clearly did not like the look of me running, but fortunately did not seem to mind me as much when I was walking! 😬

@RadFad if you have access to a gym, the rowing machine is low impact, works 85% of your muscles and is great for cardiovascular health too. I’ve tried quite a few different ways of exercising over the years, but nothing has made as much of a difference to my body as rowing does.

TheRealHousewife · 23/08/2022 12:50

@CrimsonAlligator Lovely ponies 🐴 Would the ponies chase you if you were running 🏃‍♀️ Scary! OHs blood pressure is slightly down today but still at stage 3. Keeping a close eye on it! 🥺

OP posts:
RadFad · 23/08/2022 13:05

@CrimsonAlligator I never think of the rowing machine when I've been at the gym in the past. It's definitely something to think about.

I took my children swimming this morning and did 5 lengths. It knackered me, I'm so unfit!

ImALittlePea · 23/08/2022 13:05

Today's gone a bit squiffy, I woke feeling really odd - light headed and dizzy. Almost fell over when I got up. So weird. So I had a banana for breakfast instead of my usual nothing, then took kids to the park to meet a friend but massively underestimated how hot it still is 😭 so when we got back I just grabbed a quick and easy (and not at all healthy) lunch 😏

B - banana
L - 2 crumpets with butter and marmite, bag of crisps 😬
D - tortilla pizza, homemade wedges, salad

Really, really wish it would properly rain where I am @TheRealHousewife the thick heat appears to be back. Somehow my grass is so far surviving but the flowers are doing less well. Need some time to tend to them but it's so hard to carve it out in the holidays. Definitely getting the summer burnout feeling now!

CrimsonAlligator · 23/08/2022 15:05

@TheRealHousewifethe ponies we get around here are usually calm, gentle souls. But these ones didn’t see me coming and were clearly startled when I suddenly appeared. I don’t think they’d have come running after me, but they were clearly not in the mood to let me pass 😬

(the picture was taken after I’d backed off and after we’d spent a good few minutes staring at each other, so they look a lot more relaxed than when I first saw them!)

I guess it will take a few days for your DH’s medication to start working properly? Fingers crossed the numbers go down fast.

I couldn’t believe how warm it was when I went for a walk this lunch time @ImALittlePea. We’ve had lots of proper rain here, but it kind of feels like it’s heating up again. I personally can’t wait for Autumn! 😁

Allthegoodnamestakken · 23/08/2022 16:25

Evening all
@ImALittlePea it's home made, really simple and so tasty! I pretty much made up the recipe but I did 1/2 a large butternut dry roasted in the oven, 1 can of chickpeas drained, some spicy seasoning. Blended it all together with a stick blender and then added an egg and a bit of flour to bind. The mixture is really sticky but you can shape it with wet hands. I fried them in a pan with a bit of oil might try baking them next time. They don't hold together hugely well but I managed to flip them ok.
I haven't dine great today, way to many carbs. Will see what the damage is on the scales tomorrow

Slightlystressedbride · 23/08/2022 16:53

Hi all, nice to catch up on the thread!
I'm away with work this week, I've been very averagely ok food-wise, I can feel already I've put on but unfortunately - or fortunately - my travel scales were MIA when I packed so I can't track and there will be no WoW for me this week!
I've managed to get to the hotel gym and walking where possible instead of taxis, plus I've been sticking to g&t rather than wine which is hopefully minimising things...but lots of team dinners/lunches where it's hard/rude to say no. I think I need to get better at pushing food around on my plate and not eating it!
A few more days to go, not looking forward to seeing the damage when I get back! Gah!
