☀️THE SUMMER COUNTDOWN THREAD 2 ☀️

Fresh new month, fresh new start, fresh new habits. Jump right in to reset & refresh to become a healthier version of yourself in time for a Sizzling Summer!

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating to LOSE or MAINTAIN. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have a WOW (Weigh On Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and generally eat twice a day.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

@HouseofHolbein that’s a great loss. My GW is 9st 7, 2lbs to go! Glad the egg salad worked out for you.
I’m still coughing away and off work. Slight improvement since weekend so hopefully on the mend.
B-oats with berries and tbsp yoghurt
L- leftover lentil meatballs/kofte with salad, apple
D- tbc
Well done @SanFranBear !
Well done @Preg19 at resisting chocolate.

milkfromthesleepycow · 14/06/2022 10:21

@CrimsonAlligator I sometimes drink a protein drink during the exercise instead of water if I'm in a rush. The one I use makes it just like really weak juice so it will depend how you make it up (I know some people use milk /smoothies)

@SanFranBear well done on breaking 80kg ! Needs a non-food reward!

@TheRealHousewife frittata looks delicious

@Benjispruce4 hope you start feeling better soon

CrimsonAlligator · 14/06/2022 10:50

I can see that having a protein drink during exercise would work for some types of exercise, but with rowing you are effectively squashing your tummy with a fair amount of force 20+ times a minute. That’s not a good feeling if there’s food in there. On the plus side, it’s done wonders for my IBS as I guess it’s not unlike a vigorous stomach massage 😂

ImALittlePea · 14/06/2022 10:52

That frittata looks super delish @TheRealHousewife

All this talk of macros, nutrients etc is making me feel a bit lost 😬 I don't track mine at all. No idea how nutritious my food actually is on a daily basis. I know I don't eat much processed food (much less now than at the start of the year), cook mostly from scratch etc, so I figure I must be healthy enough. Maybe I need to focus more on that, but it's just finding the time as it'll be a totally new education.

Yesterday got a bit difficult as my DD was sick at nursery so I had to pick her up early. Trying to juggle a vomiting toddler with cooking, 7yo's clubs etc was not an easy feat. We nearly opted for chippy tea for the ease but we ended up swapping out dinner for an easier one planned later in the week instead - loaded pasta and pesto. Quick and easy to eat with one hand while giving the necessary cuddles, plus we have sworn off takeaway until our holiday so no feelings of failure.

Today's plan:
Lunch - the normal! Cup-a-soup and veggies 😂
(I will inject a bit more variety into my weekday lunches when I hopefully lose a bit more and after our holiday)
Dinner - corned beef hash and beans. Not the healthiest 😬 but DH loves it and I have to give in to his preferences occasionally 😂

TheRealHousewife · 14/06/2022 11:02

@ImALittlePea TBH the frittata was very tasty! It had smoked salmon (needed using up), frozen peas, sauté leeks, chives, double cream, 8 eggs and about 40g of mixed grated cheeses. It came in at 550 cals per portion (made 4 portions)

Macros are interesting and can be important for some of us. I like to know and I like to eat lower carb, higher protein & fat for example. If you’re making progress with how you’re doing it I wouldn’t worry. I don’t want you to feel pressured to work yours out unless you are interested. If you are interested you can track macros via apps like MFP and Cronometer (I think @fallfallfall uses the latter one, I use the former one).

I hope your little one is soon better! You mums are hero’s with all the caring you do for your children & families ❤️

Benjispruce4 · 14/06/2022 11:06

@ImALittlePea I don’t track either. I try to ensure everything that goes in is nutritional, I’ve always cooked from scratch and like loads of veg, fruit, salad , lean meats and fish and pulses so I know that I’m lucky that that’s my natural persuasion. I just have to watch portions and alcohol . The latter leads to giving in to savoury, salty snacks like crisps.
Hope your Dd recovers quickly. It reminded me of when my 3 yr old(now 21 yr old )was alternating between diarrhoea and vomiting and I was trying to breastfeed her sister in between my own toilet visits.😟
Hang in there!

ImALittlePea · 14/06/2022 11:31

Thank you @TheRealHousewife @Benjispruce4

I know I/we could do with more variety in general and definitely more protein. Problem is that DH isn't keen on most meat, neither of us eat fish, and he isn't keen on pulses or eggs either. He eats chicken breast, minced beef/lamb (but not steaks, chops etc) and processed meat like sausages, bacon etc. I can't deal with cooking multiple meals each day to cater for us, I already have to cook separately for the kids (neither have bad diets as such but typically fussy for children and annoyingly, have different preferences to each other). But I also don't think we're particularly unhealthy as a family. Just one of those things where I've had to accept that's how my family eats, I make up for it when I'm eating with my mum, sister or other friends.

I've not been using MFP for a while. Probably should get back into using it, although I have a feeling it'll just make me worried that I'm/we're not well balanced enough so I might avoid 😅

Thankfully DD has been much brighter today. No sickness since tea time yesterday so touch wood is was just a random short sharp episode ❤️

CrimsonAlligator · 14/06/2022 12:22

Apologies @ImALittlePea , I didn’t mean to spark macro tracking anxieties either 😬

I’m tracking mine because I’m veggie and following an intense exercise programme. I’m paying extra attention to my diet because I don’t want to end up burnt out and for all that exercise to do more harm than good. If you have a reasonably healthy diet and do a normal amount of exercise, I don’t think you need to worry at all about macros if you don’t want to.

ImALittlePea · 14/06/2022 13:39

Thank you @CrimsonAlligator that makes me feel better about the fact I don't! 😁

SanFranBear · 14/06/2022 14:37

I don't track that level of detail either, ImALittlePea.. I probably should but with everything else, got enough to be cracking on with.

Glad your little DD is feeling better... I think we all have similar memories, Benji although yours is particularly evocative 😆

fallfallfall · 14/06/2022 16:11

okay 159.4, ready to see 158 (i know i'm pushing my luck).
@ImALittlePea , the app i'm using offers all this information BUT i have no clue what 90% means or what i should aim for.

some of the graphs are easy enough to interpret (fiber will say what % of goal).
Question for those who know what is the balance of fat, protein, carbs that i should aim for? yesterday i managed a nice looking pie graph of 1/3 for each bit?

TheRealHousewife · 14/06/2022 16:43

Does an Happy Dance for @fallfallfall , psychologically the lower numbers are such a boost! Well done 👍👏

Pleased to read your daughter is much better @ImALittlePea

Talking of which as the day has gone on I’ve developed a really bad headache so going to have a cheeky lay down 😬

dinner tonight give or take a few substitutes.
Ooh weather is hot, hot , hot! I’m feels a lot better this afternoon. Enjoy your lie down @TheRealHousewife and hope it helps.

CrimsonAlligator · 14/06/2022 17:22

@fallfallfall I’m not sure that there is a perfect answer for that. On my app, I’m on the “balanced plan”, which comes down to 50% of daily calories from carbs, 35% fat and 15% protein. I’m sure low carb-ers would be appalled at that breakdown though and I don’t think it’d be problematic if you, for example, got a higher percentage of your daily energy from protein instead of carbs. As long as you get enough protein and don’t get ALL your calories from carbs or fat, you should be ok 👍

CrimsonAlligator · 14/06/2022 17:22

@TheRealHousewife i hope your headache settles down soon

ImALittlePea · 14/06/2022 19:31

I hope you're feeling better soon @TheRealHousewife

TheRealHousewife · 14/06/2022 21:14

Hi Ladies & thank you.

Headache lifted and generally feel more lively, although I didn’t nap. For some reason I find it difficult to sleep during the day.

@CrimsonAlligator my macros are 35% carbs, 30% fat & 35% protein. I don’t always meet those targets and when I do it’s very satisfying 😬 It makes it easier to be lower carb with being celiac, although I do have occasional gf products.

I’m pleased the weather is warming up ☀️

OP posts:
buzzofthebumblebee · 14/06/2022 22:33

Goodness ladies, you all sound as though you know what you're doing with macros etc. Impressive stuff.

Glad your headache shifted @TheRealHousewife I'm not a fan of warmer weather - heat or sun. I'm the wrong colouring. But pleased to report I wore a dress today and no more chub rub! Was quite inflicted last year.

Everything crossed for WOW tomorrow.

fallfallfall · 15/06/2022 02:58

ahhhh macro's the Cronometer settings were a touch too strange for my approval 70% fat/20% carbs/10% protein. so after an evening of my own research thanks to seeing@TheRealHousewife settings i changed mine to:
30% fat/30% carbs/40% protein.
i'm NOT hungry so i'm not tweeking stuff for that reason, i just want a sensible blend.
i ate almost 1000 calories today mainly because we were having steak for supper and my calorie allowance would have meant 1oz or something unreasonable. so i went for 4.5 ounces and reached some sort of protein goal.
i got in a gentle walk and biked

TheRealHousewife · 15/06/2022 06:47

Good Morning 😊

@fallfallfall 70% fat does seem on the high side 😮 The problem I have is meeting my protein goal and going over my fat. Nobetheless, the numbers give me something to aim for. It’s great to read you’re not hungry on 1000 cals, so clearly your macros must be perfectly balanced for your body! Well done 👍

Thank you @buzzofthebumblebee. The headache was relatively short lived for me as they generally hang around for a day or 2.

WOW - Lost the small gain, so seems I’m back to yo-young 😬Considering tweaking calories downwards and eating around 1000 rather than 1100. Not long term as it shows in hair shed. I’m at the upper level of my maintenance window and would like some comfortable wiggle room.

Menu
Meal 1 - Halloumi stir fry with red pepper, kale, carrot & red onion.
Meal 2 - Sea bass, jersey royals, peas & leeks.
Tea, coffee, water.

milkfromthesleepycow · 15/06/2022 07:02

@TheRealHousewife well done on the loss 👏 wiggle room is a good thing to aim for

It's a maintain here (I don't think I can count a 0.1kg loss 😂). I'm not surprised, I went off plan a good few times last week and didn't always manage to make a sensible choice rather than grabbing something quick and easy (red liquorice laces I'm looking at you!!)
BUT I've been out for a run this morning and my pace is gradually getting faster for the same effort
And the fancy scales tell me I've lost 1.4% fat and gained 1.4% muscle.

So overall think I'm at peace with it all 😁

Good luck for other WOWs

TheRealHousewife · 15/06/2022 07:08

@milkfromthesleepycow Thank you. You most definitely can call it a loss no matter how small. A loss is a loss 😬 Well done on your early morning run and turning your fat to muscle 😮 Like Jesus turning water to wine!

OP posts:
milkfromthesleepycow · 15/06/2022 07:42

@TheRealHousewife that made me proper laugh!! As a skill I think mine is much more useful 😂

Benjispruce4 · 15/06/2022 07:45

@milkfromthesleepycow thats definitely a win and a wow, magic!
1/2lb here and I’m very happy as last week’s lb was the first loss in weeks after a plateau.
SW-10 st 4
CW-9st 8.5
GW-9st 6
Also a NSV last night. Tried on a slim fit size 10 pair of black trousers that were skin tight a couple of months ago and they slipped on nicely. No better feeling.
Keep at it, it’s worth it!😀

Chatterbox89 · 15/06/2022 08:09

Sounds like everyone has had a good week, I used to track macros on a previous diet but found it to be quite hard work so I’m also impressed with those that stick to it!

I’ve weighed in today at 9st 7 so 2lbs off this week 🥳

I am in the office today and forgot to bring lunch so it will be a meal deal of some sort for lunch, then a mini steak and salad for dinner. I have been really trying to drink more water this past week and been for 2 small runs so guess they have helped. Hope everyone has a good day and enjoys the sunshine if you have it where you are.
