☀️THE SUMMER COUNTDOWN THREAD 2 ☀️

Fresh new month, fresh new start, fresh new habits. Jump right in to reset & refresh to become a healthier version of yourself in time for a Sizzling Summer!

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating to LOSE or MAINTAIN. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have a WOW (Weigh On Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and generally eat twice a day.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

Morning all! After more than a year, DH declared over the weekend that he’s decided to join me and start shifting some weight! As a result, I’ve spent most of the weekend on long hikes, talking about nutrition 😁

I’m pretty excited to have a real life “healthy living buddy”. As we all know, it takes so much discipline to keep this weightloss thing going, but that increases tenfold if you have people around you who are eating as if there’s no tomorrow. Hopefully things will get a bit easier now.

Welcome back @ginsparkles. it sounds like you had a lovely time and I’m sure the delicious food was all worth it.

Great to see you back on the June thread @buzzofthebumblebee . Sounds like you’re in a really good headspace. Maintenance is the hardest bit, so if you feel it’s not taking too much effort, I’d say you’re winning!

Good effort on staying within calories @SanFranBear . On some days that can really feel like an impossible task. Over the last few weeks, I’ve started looking at my calories on a weekly rather than a daily basis. So far, that’s really helping me to deal with days like that and be a little bit more flexible.

@Lizsmum and @ButteryNuts it sounds like you both had good weekends. May be not from a calorie point of view, but as long as you had a good time, that’s all ok.

@HouseofHolbein your job sounds really hard from a diet point of view. Just the occasional 3 am start would be enough to throw my entire routine out of the window.

Literally missed one meal and ive been posing in the mirror to see if I've noticed a difference..am I being too ambitious here 😅🤣

CrimsonAlligator · 13/06/2022 12:06

I have a question for any fellow veggies here (and I apologise that this is a complete and utter cliche), how do you make sure you get enough protein?

I thought I was doing reasonably ok, as I usually hit the recommended minimum amount. But I’ve recently discovered that because of all the exercise I do, I should be aiming much higher. Apparently I need about 100 grams a day and I just don’t see how I can do that on a calorie controlled vegetarian diet.

Does anyone have any tips? I’ve already bought myself protein powder, but would much prefer to get my protein in a more natural way.

@CrimsonAlligator I watched an Eat Well for Less episode recently and out of a variety of sausages (pork, chicken and vegetarian) the soy protein sausages had the most protein. Do you eat much soy?

TheRealHousewife · 13/06/2022 12:18

@CrimsonAlligator assuming your logging your macros via an app such MFP I ensure I have protein at each meal. Not a vegetarian more a flexitarian I include pulses, cheese, eggs (not sure if you have those), beans.

Everyone else's meals sound much more interesting than mine so I think I'll start planning what I eat based on what I see here.
So today's late lunch will be pea frittata (thank you for the idea @TheRealHousewife )

Benjispruce4 · 13/06/2022 12:39

@Lizsmum I sometimes just google for meals at certain calories.

Some nice lunch ideas here. Just Google whatever calorie limit you want.

ImALittlePea · 13/06/2022 12:48

@CrimsonAlligator my DH decided to start last week as well. It does make life easier (although I'm simply furious with him that he lost 6lb in his first week!)

(Joking, obvs)

Hahaha @123ROLO definitely been there and done that! 😂

Slight change to meal plan today as noticed the chicken in the fridge has to be eaten today. So going to make hunters chicken with the crushes newies and veg. Yummy.

milkfromthesleepycow · 13/06/2022 12:52

@CrimsonAlligator I'm not a vegetarian and I struggle with my protein intake. 1.6g protein per kg body weight is difficult to achieve! I have resorted to protein supplements and take one after all my weights workouts- gives me 20g of protein for just under 100 calories. Can't fit it in the my calorie restriction otherwise

For those who were interested my pancake- I have no bloody idea how it ended up being so calorific!! I only put butter on it! Maybe because I used oat flour?? And it was 'American style'. Definitely would have thought twice if I'd calculated beforehand- live and learn (or not in my caseBlush)

ginsparkles · 13/06/2022 12:55

So lovely to be back enjoying the chatting!

@TheRealHousewife yes, shopping list written out, meal plans for the week done. And DH is collecting the shopping tonight so I can properly climb back on the wagon tomorrow.

@Benjispruce4 I use that website for recipe ideas too!

Preg19 · 13/06/2022 13:28

Right I’m joining this thread after creeping on half a stone!
please can people tell me how do you stop the evening chocolate 😭

CrimsonAlligator · 13/06/2022 13:54

Welcome to the thread @Preg19 . I’ve never managed to stop the evening chocolate to be honest, so I work around it by allowing myself one bar a week. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. I find that the darker the chocolate, the less likely I am to just keep eating it. I’d easily polish off a bar of milk chocolate in 10 minutes. That’s why I tend not to have milk chocolate in the house 😳

Thanks for those links @TheRealHousewife ! I kind of eat eggs, but only if I can get them from my local farmer. He’s not the most reliable supplier, or may be his chickens aren’t. Sometimes I go without for weeks 🐔

@Benjispruce4 I didn’t realise that soy is that high in protein. I don’t eat a huge amount of sausages, but swapping my quorn ones for soy is easy enough. Also, I just googled soy milk vs oat milk (which is what I usually have) and soy milk is much better for protein too. That’s another easy swap. Thank you!
.

xogossipgirlxo · 13/06/2022 14:10

Hello, can I join please? Currently 57kilos (8st13), aiming for 53 (8st4). Might not seem like a lot, but I love food so much, I just can't go hungry. I will be doing calorie counting, but I am trying to reduce the amount of bread and replace it with proteins or vegetables. I recently stopped being vegetarian due to low iron levels, which makes me breathless, so I incorporated small amounts of meat to my diet.

To a good start, I ate the whole tub of pringles yesterday and white kinder bueno, so I am feeling bit shit today. Bloated.

TheRealHousewife · 13/06/2022 14:37

Welcome to the thread @xogossipgirlxo . I think you have the right idea! Keeping on top of weight now will save heart ache and disappointment down the line! I advocate for healthy eating rather than any specific diet plan. I don’t ban anything apart from wheat products & anything containing gluten due to being celiac. I do count calories as a way of measuring intake. You’ll soon be where you want to be 👍

TheRealHousewife · 13/06/2022 14:40

@milkfromthesleepycow which protein supplement do you use. I’ve often considered this but I know products vary so much.

OP posts:
CrimsonAlligator · 13/06/2022 15:00

@TheRealHousewife I know you didn’t ask me, but I’ve been buying this one:

www.theproteinworks.com/vegan-protein

(they have non-vegan versions too but, as I understand it, those are more likely to cause digestion issues if you have a sensitive stomach)

I accidentally bought a flavoured version (vanilla creme) last time and I wouldn’t recommend that one 🤢 But I’ve also had the unflavoured version before, which was pretty good and a little more versatile as you can add it to soups, stews etc, as well as turn it into a shake. With the vanilla one shakes seem to be the only option.

Preg19 · 13/06/2022 15:10

@CrimsonAlligator thankyou! That’s a really good idea and I will give it a try!

I find it easier to limit chocolate if the chocolate is individually wrapped. If its a big bar or something or a box of chocolates I find I dip into it saying "just one more won't hurt" till the whole things gone!

milkfromthesleepycow · 13/06/2022 15:41

@CrimsonAlligator bulk clear whey isolate (bulk is the name of the company). I mainly have the apple and blackcurrant but can also get the cherry flavour down. I loathe vanilla, strawberry and chocolate 'flavoured' stuff which makes it a little difficult!

Benjispruce4 · 13/06/2022 15:52

@Preg19 I’m ok with chocolate as I don’t buy it with my weekly shop and I take a packed lunch to work so I’m not in shops during the week so don’t see chocolate often. BUT I have a weakness for crisps so in all honesty, I don’t buy them so I can’t eat them. Simple as that.😁
