☀️THE SUMMER COUNTDOWN THREAD 2 ☀️

Fresh new month, fresh new start, fresh new habits. Jump right in to reset & refresh to become a healthier version of yourself in time for a Sizzling Summer!

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating to LOSE or MAINTAIN. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have a WOW (Weigh On Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and generally eat twice a day.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

Ok the squid was 586 cals!!!! But, we shared one portion. Phew!

Graphista · 08/06/2022 22:06

I've been thinking since reading and posting earlier and I've decided to step away from the thread.

Others may or may not agree with me but I just think the way @LightningStar was treated was unfair, unkind and unnecessary

It just doesn't sit right with me at all

Genuinely wish you all luck with the weight loss but I won't be returning

Benjispruce4 · 08/06/2022 22:22

@Graphista I don’t know what else could be done apart from the support given to @LightningStar on a daily basis, the calling out of a random, unkind poster and the open door to @LightningStar to continue on the thread . What do you suggest?

MrsT777 · 08/06/2022 23:03

I totally agree with you @Graphista

The way @LightningStar was treated by some posters was appalling.

They have this misguided view that she can come back. Would you return after you were treated like that?!

Benjispruce4 · 08/06/2022 23:10

Ok so you’re back @MrsT777 . You have no contributions to this weight loss thread so why do you bother if you dislike the posters?
@LightningStar has NOT been badly treated by the regular posters on this thread, only one random, previously unknown poster. It’s very tiresome now so please go elsewhere.

MrsT777 · 08/06/2022 23:20

@Benjispruce4 I don't dislike the posters. I just don’t like the way @LightningStar was treated.

Looks like I’m not the only one!

Benjispruce4 · 08/06/2022 23:23

Treated by who @MrsT777 ?

Benjispruce4 · 08/06/2022 23:24

I’m confused by @Graphista as earlier this evening she had sad ‘Don’t let one plopper make us think we’ve done anything wrong.’

CrimsonAlligator · 08/06/2022 23:58

Welcome to the thread @Lizsmum . Sounds like you made some good progress already.

I’m sure anniversary calories don’t count @Benjispruce4 !

Glad your first day at your new job went well @Echobelly . It’s always a bit nerve wrecking, but it sounds like you’ll fit right in.

I’m sorry to see you leave @Graphista , but I respect your opinion as someone who’s been an active member of this group for a while. You will be missed.

TheRealHousewife · 09/06/2022 07:44

Has anyone here looked at the discussion that’s going on about Ultra Processed Foods? There’s some really interesting stuff in there:

www.mumsnet.com/talk/weight_loss_chat/4564743-is-there-a-game-changer-and-is-this-it-upf?page=1

I don’t know anything about how UPF’s affect hormones etc, but it makes a lot of sense to me that the more processed the food, the more calories you can absorb from it. That by itself would explain at least some of the potential weight gain as a result of UPF’s 🤔

I’m not sure I’m ready to give them all up though! It sounds very difficult to eradicate completely, but I guess it’s a bit easier to just aim for less.

TheRealHousewife · 09/06/2022 11:20

Hi @CrimsonAlligator thats looks an interesting read/listen and will go back to them later today. The more you cook/process something it alters the molecular structure thus making more ‘energy’ (calories) available/absorbable. I read something some time back that explained it better than I. I’m sure a book I have also covers it. Later when I have more time I will look it up/seek it out.

For me it goes part towards explaining when eating similar calories all year I generally weigh less in the summer months when I have more raw foods stuffs in salads etc than in winter when everything cooked. Cooking is the first rung of the food processing ladder.

Like we’ve always said weight loss is complex with no one size fits all due to each person being absolutely unique. Calorie counting nonetheless can be a useful yardstick to measure intake by for those of us who have everything stacked against us.

Thank you for sharing 🙏

Yes I listen to Dr Chatterjee’s podcasts and he talk about UPFs.

giatta · 09/06/2022 12:47

thank you @TheRealHousewife
I feel like I started a diet so many times and got demotivated after losing about half a stone. Started craving carbs, sweets and cheese (I love cheese) and soon found my weight back to where I started :(
Joining this thread I hope I will be able to stick with the healthy eating long term

TheRealHousewife · 09/06/2022 13:26

You’re welcome @giatta . I have all what you say derails you except the sweets. I have full fat cheese & gluten free carbs but portion controlled and not every day. If you begin to feel deprived you will always fall of the wagon. Too much sugar/ carbs will cause cravings and false hunger signals as they make your blood sugars unstable. I’m a strong advocate for not banning anything and encourage a varied healthy diet, including plenty of fresh vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds & herbs. In moderation, no food group is unhealthy. You can do, you just need to find your groove 👍😬

Dr Chatterjees podcasts are quite good @Benjispruce4. He’s wrote a couple of books too.

Thank you all for your kind welcome.

I've, unusually, had a day to myself today - except for two Zoom meetings. This would previously have led to lots of snacking but I've managed to avoid having anything apart from breakfast and lunch so far.

My downfall is fruit. The coach on the pre-diabetes course has said that 2 portions a day should be the limit. It's hard when the berries are ripening in the garden and delicious fruit is appearing in the shops. I've kept to the limit for about 4 weeks but I'm really missing eating more.
How do you cope with this - or maybe you don't need to?

TheRealHousewife · 09/06/2022 16:35

You’re welcome @Lizsmum In the main I agree with your coach. However not all fruit is equal. Raspberries & strawberries have far less sugar than an mango, pear, grapes or watermelon.

Benjispruce4 · 09/06/2022 16:42

I don’t limit fruit. I would listen to your coach though as you are pre diabetic so the advice will be tailored to your needs. I eat berries at breakfast, always an apple after lunch and often more fruit after dinner such as a kiwi , grapes or a satsuma. I rarely eat bananas and if I do they form the main part of the meal such as yoghurt with banana.
B- porridge with berry compote from frozen summer berries(no sugar added)
L- feta and olive salad, apple
D- will be roasted, skinless chicken thighs with homemade, lighter coleslaw and a few homemade sweet potato wedges .

milkfromthesleepycow · 09/06/2022 18:02

The UFP argument is very interesting and backed by pretty good science IMO.
I just hope I'm achieving it enough by scratch cooking! No way I'm at the stage where I can start thinking about changing oils as an adaption to my eating plan! Maybe later....

HouseofHolbein · 09/06/2022 19:01

Hello everyone! Had bacon for tea so not sure I can join in with the UPF discussion 🤣🤣 was delicious tho!

anyway I have an interview tomorrow. I put my cv in on a whim and they’ve asked to see me 😊 tomorrow is my day off so nothing to lose is there? It’s out of retail which is a bonus bit further from home but still walking distance. Still shifts but get rotas 4 weeks at a time and I think they have a pattern so better than my current job.

I like my current job but still keep looking…

TheRealHousewife · 09/06/2022 19:40

That’s fantastic @HouseofHolbein Good luck at interview, I’m sure you’ll ace it👍

OP posts:
CrimsonAlligator · 09/06/2022 21:54

Good luck at your interview @HouseofHolbein🤞

Well done on resisting those snacks @Lizsmum . I love fruit, but don’t actually eat that much of it. In terms of blood sugar levels would it help if you had your fruit with something else? For example, yesterday I had a few rye crackers with some goats cheese and some cherries on the side...call me a weird continental (my DH does all the time!) but I think the combination of (some) fruits and a little bit of cheese really works 😋

ImALittlePea · 10/06/2022 07:13

Good luck with your interview today @HouseofHolbein

I saw a thread on here this week about UPFs but I haven't read up on it at all. Sounds like it's worth investigating though!

Weigh in for me today, was totally dreading it (might have mentioned that already? 👀😄) But I've somehow lost 2lb!! Not sure I feel deserving of that, but I'm gonna bloody we'll take it!

Happy Friday losers ❤️😁

SanFranBear · 10/06/2022 07:22

Well, its a weigh day over here and despite being pretty strict with myself since Monday, I'm still a little up from the beginning of the month. Think I may need to revise my monthly goal as am not going to get there with only three weeks left...

SW: 104.7kg
CW: 80.9kg
June GW: 76.2kg ??

Not to worry though, I thoroughly enjoyed my four day break of stuffing myself, drinking like a fish & rarely stirring from my camp chair... although it's unnerving how quickly it all goes back on, isn't it?

I'll be having soft boiled eggs for brekky, crackers, cheese & fruit for lunch (if you're weird, CrimsonAlligator, so am I am I love this combo!) and then am out for a decent 18k walk as DC not home tonight. I might then finish the nachos kit I've had lurking and then can completely reset. I really REALLY want to get under that 80kg mark!

Well done on your loss, Littlepea.. Good start to the weekend!

And very best of luck, Holbein - as you say, nothing to lose and everything to gain so hope it goes really well!

I think I need to lose a little more before I start considering the whole UPF thing - I can see the merits and how it would actually help me but I'm not sure I have the time, money or inclination to dive down too deep into that rabbithole... very interesting discussion though.

BTW, RealHousewife, I thjnk ages back you mentioned Carys Manor as somewhere you used to visit? I went passed there on my WoW this week and it made me think of you - if you ever make it down here again, we should meet for a cuppa!

TheRealHousewife · 10/06/2022 08:03

Good Morning 😊

@CrimsonAlligator I love cheese & fruit together. Goats cheese goes lovely with figs too!

@ImALittlePea fabulous weigh in! Well done on your 2lb loss! 👍👏

@SanFranBear My weight is up this morning again 🤷‍♀️ OH did our meal last night so went off piste, but not blaming that as wasn’t large portions. Oups I remember now, I did have a small piece of cheese too when cleaning the kitchen. Your June target might be a little ambitious. You could revise it down a bit and then you’re more like to reach your target. You’ll most certainly get below 80kg 👍 It was Chewton Glen hotel but thank you so much for the offer of a cuppa, that’s really nice of you.

Menu
Meal 1 - Cheese omelette (all this talk of cheese 😬) Apple, walnuts.
Meal 2 - Sea bass, peas, carrots, leeks, new potatoes (skin on)
Tea, coffee, water.

Have a good one!
