@Pommelegible and @Guardiansofthegalaxi I can see where you're coming from regarding BMI - the range is very wide. I too am decidedly chubby when I'm a BMI of 25+, in fact I'm currently within normal range and I'm also in the process of losing a few lbs.

It was more the way it was framed that concerned me as @Guardiansofthegalaxi said it was getting her down. This is worrying as I know exactly what a BMI of 22 looks like on a small frame as I'm also very petite. For reference, my wrist is less than 5.5 inches, my ring size is F and 3/4.
The lightest I've ever been is 21 and I would look unhealthy if I went to a BMI of 19.6.

I think to let it get her down is a red flag for an eating disorder. I didn't want to spell it out as blatantly as that, but there you go.

My usual BMI probably hovers around the 19-20 mark. My diet is terrible but definitely no eating disorder. I love carbs and chocolate and biscuits (too much!). Pre-baby, I would run and cycle regularly upwards of 100 miles per week as my hobby . I haven’t exercised regularly for about 3 years now, however I have carried on eating as though I still do that amount of exercise! Today I’ve eaten a bowl of Frosties for breakfast and a bacon omelette for lunch. But normally I’d have had at least one chocolate bar and would probably have another one in the evening too. But for the last two days I’ve been using MyFitnessPal to be more accountable and mindful of what I eat, and have had the opportunity to do a good amount of exercise. My problem has always been consistency, so I’m hoping I can keep it up

thislittlebird · 07/06/2023 15:36

I’m crap at consistency too @Guardiansofthegalaxi!

I’ve been in the overweight BMI zone for ages and I’m now at 25.5 roughly, so only just overweight, I still look chubby, I’m thinking something like 23 might suit me. Lower would be nice but I need to be realistic lol. I’ve always had sturdy legs and my weight now seems to hit my back and trunk area as I gain. I’m 63kg/9st 9lb roughly, my scales are a bit unreliable, but I need to motivate myself to get back to it all again. Lake District trip in July and I’d like to be fitter for that.

Not sure if I could hit 9 stone by late July, but even 1lb per week less would be nice. 9st 3 by then would be amazing tbh, considering I won’t have been that weight in maybe 5 years or more.

So far today I’ve had…

Breakfast: sourdough toast with peanut butter and banana

Lunch: Greek salad

Dinner: planning a veggie Thai green curry with brown rice for dinner.

So far I’ve not snacked today, but the day is still young! Planning on doing some back stretches soon for some aches lower back issue i have had for a couple of days, and then a run and or some back and bicep exercises.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 07/06/2023 16:12

@Guardiansofthegalaxi I'm glad to hear that! Don't be hard on yourself, I'm sure you don't look nearly as bad as you think you do ❤️

OP posts:
Guardiansofthegalaxi · 07/06/2023 19:47

@thislittlebird well done on not snacking! Stretches for your back sound good, back pain is a real bugger. I’m trying to be consistent with doing something everyday and have told myself it doesn’t matter how small it is. A ten minute run is better than no run at all.

Thank you @SwimmingOnEggshells 😊

What does everyone find most challenging, eating well or doing physical activity?

SwimmingOnEggshells · 07/06/2023 19:54

I find both hard @Guardiansofthegalaxi, I find when I've fallen off the wagon, eating and exercise both go to pot! I was doing great logging on MyFitnessPal but I haven't been consistent with it of late and my weight loss has stalled a bit. Drinking too much much wine on the weekend is my vice Blush

I managed a hilly 5k run today on my lunch break and so far I've eaten:

Cappuccino
Granola
Toast with smoked salmon pate
1 protein shake
Chicken satay skewers x 2 with satay sauce, rice and cucumber salad
Half an eclair

I need to go and log that...I'm guessing 1,500?

NotEvenSlightlyReasonable · 07/06/2023 20:09

@Guardiansofthegalaxi I'm a both too! My preferred operating mode is sat on the sofa with a book and plenty of chocolate so moderating both is a bit of a bugger!

I went to the gym this morning, did my weights and my 30 minutes treadmill. I set it on a random programme and set speed according to the incline. Today appeared to have been based on the himalayas so I did 30 minutes steep uphill at 6kph! Maybe next time it will give me something I can run?

Guardiansofthegalaxi · 08/06/2023 20:02

@SwimmingOnEggshells a hilly 5k, fab effort! I’m not very good at estimating calories, I’m always shocked when I weigh out carbs! I’m also the same, if I don’t work out, I tend to eat badly too! I’m kind of all or nothing.

@NotEvenSlightlyReasonable fab effort with treadmill and weights! I always think treadmill running is harder than outside for some reason so a hilly 6kph seems perfectly reasonable!

I’ve not had the time to workout today and I’ve had a hot chocolate, bacon omelette, lasagne and salad and about 8 rich tea fingers. So not great, but also not the end of the world. Tomorrow is a new day!

BogRollBOGOF · 08/06/2023 23:06

I've had a 5:2 day today which went well. I didn't do Monday's as I ran a HM on Sunday, so needed energy to recover, particularly as my digestive system is slow to fire back up after major exertion.

I try to do it when I'm busy in the morning so managed to go until 2pm. I got nibbly then so had some olives and a babybel. Dinner was chicken salad- basically the fajitas that my family had minus the tortillas. I CBA to calorie count, and delaying food and concentrating on salad/ veg/ protein is how I manage it on minimal effort.

I definitely find exercise easier than managing my eating. But I'm the kind of person who pauses for a nice little break halfway through a marathon to be able to eat a bag of crisps 😂 They were lush, and one mile later, I really felt the benefit of the salt and starch. They're a surprisingly good food for endurance exercise!

SwimmingOnEggshells · 09/06/2023 12:47

@Guardiansofthegalaxi I find posting on the thread is a great help, even if I don't have an amazing food or exercising day, it keeps me in the mindset.

@BogRollBOGOF I'm laughing at the pause for crisps mid-marathon :) I know what you mean about having to keep busy if you're trying to fast. You definitely notice the hunger pangs less - not that I've managed 5;2 in years!

I haven't managed to get back into MFP but I'm down a lb so the running and not eating crap is working. That's 8.5lbs off since February and another 4.5km done this morning, woo!

OP posts:
WellTidy · 09/06/2023 14:06

@BogRollBOGOF Mighty impressed at the HM! Well done.

Quiet week for me in the weight loss front and exercise front. Tummy bug turned into a flu type virus but I’m absolutely fine now. Not really wanting much food has taken me under 10st (so 10lb down) but I’m not expecting that to last once I start eating properly again.

Glorious weather here today, planning a mid afternoon iced latte and a solero in the garden when the children come from home school.

BogRollBOGOF · 09/06/2023 16:39

I've done a scales/ tape measure check-in. I think some slight progress is finally beginning to kick in. I'm begining to feel a subtle difference at the ribs/ hip bones which have been shy and hiding away for a few years.

I'm going for little, sustainable changes not dramatic but it is taking patience to find momentum.

The big challenge will be keeping it up in the summer holidays.

LeftyLou · 13/06/2023 19:08

Hi, please may I join?

I am 5 foot 1 inches and currently weigh in at 13 stone 1. (As of last week)
I really need to get my act together and loose this weight as it is really getting me down and especially as I lost almost 2 stone last year getting me to 11 stone 4. The weather is lovely and although I don't hide away I know my body does not suit being this much over weight as well of course it been extremely unhealthy.

I am following the slimming world diet and am also on another great thread over there. I might also fit in some slim fast for a couple of weeks.

My aim is to get to 9 stone.

Sooverthemill · 15/06/2023 08:36

I’m definitely failing despite counting calories I feel I may need to reduce below 1200 which feels really hard.

Storynanny1 · 15/06/2023 09:21

Yes I’m going to do a few days of slimfast when I get back from a week of holiday food tomorrow! Then healthy mindful eating - again!

SwimmingOnEggshells · 15/06/2023 12:30

@LeftyLou hello! yes of course join. It's very encouraging that you lost so much before, you just need to get back into the zone.

I'm not doing too badly here, no weight loss this week so far but I've been on track with my exercise and diet so I'm optimistic I'll drop in the next couple of days. I've already done 10,000 steps today, salad planned for lunch and then homemade chicken curry for dinner.

@WellTidy I bought one of those M&S sports bras with the zip in the front, it's brilliant, my DDs barely budge in it!

OP posts:
Sooverthemill · 18/06/2023 09:04

@Storynanny1 on the strength of your post I’ve ordeee a 7 day starter pack from
slimfast ( actually from amazon as it was cheapest) and I’m going to do 2 replacement meals a day and a sensible dinner. I am 65 and have never ever used meal replacements and I’ve always poopooed them but I am desperate now I have gone .4 of a pound over 10 stone. All my summer clothes are a bit tight and I feel so awful ( and yet I hate that my weight makes me feel like sh*t as a dyed in the wool feminist, oh well) but i’m hoping a week of this will kick start me again. I’m only going to eat when I’m actually hungry except in the evening when the routine around DD ( who is bedbound) is quite tricky without a fixed meal time.

And I’ve hidden them from DH who would not approve one jot…

Any hints and tips on meal replacement stuff would be good x

Storynanny1 · 18/06/2023 10:48

I usually do the chocolate milkshake twice a day and a low calorie crunchy salad as liquids only wouldn’t work for me! I too try to justify it unsuccessfully to my husband who also does not approve. I’m on 11/1200 this week post holiday breakfasts and cream teas but will prob do next week on slimfast
Im going to really work hard on mindful eating after that and try to come to terms with my body shape and size

Sooverthemill · 18/06/2023 13:28

I didn’t feel great today and certainly not hungry so I skipped breakfast and have just had the chocolate skate from my pack. It was not unpleasant, a slight artificial sweetener taste but absolutely fine. But will it fill me up?

againmaeve · 19/06/2023 07:28

I haven't been doing well diet wise - can't seem to find any motivation and have been busy, which always make things trickier. Welcome @LeftyLou Have never used meal replacements so will interested to hear how you get on @Sooverthemill Mindful eating is my plan this week - and awareness of portion size.

NotEvenSlightlyReasonable · 19/06/2023 08:12

@Sooverthemill @Storynanny1 I like the Slimfast shakes, I've used them for a few years. I use the powder and have slight variations that give me a flavour I prefer and I genuinely like them. If you like mocha, try adding coffee to the chocolate shake, or cocoa to the caffe latte one.

I'm plateauing now, I think. Three weeks in the 9.1 - 9.2 range, shuffling slightly but not getting below it. Could just be plateau, could be that I'm exercising less due to the heat, could be that I've slacked off slightly from the programme. Going to have to focus a bit more and see if I can get below 9!

Sooverthemill · 19/06/2023 11:13

Well the shake was okay until about 4 when I had a pack of the 95 calorie cheese biscuits
from the pack ( they were really nice!) and has a Charlie Bigham moussaka for dinner with green beans and roasted courgette. And a large pear at about 8. . I think that got me to 920 all told. Not too painful! Will see what today brings, still not had breakfast but planning on falafel, asparagus, cucumber and little gem for dinner with hummus. So will work out what that is calorie wise and work backwards. I’ve been looking at intermittent fasting a bit but I don’t like feeling hungry!

useful info about the shakes, my mum always had the powder in the 70s when she was always dieting!

SwimmingOnEggshells · 19/06/2023 12:54

The odd time I skip lunch and have a protein shake instead and I find them quite good, I guess they're the same as slimfast?

I did way too much damage on the weekend, I don't even want to think about the number of salt and vinegar crisps I ate.

@NotEvenSlightlyReasonable I'd say it's a plateau, I find I can hover around the same weight for a while and then drop, fingers crossed that's what it is anyway. I agree with you on the heat; I went for a run this morning and found it so tough with the humidity.

OP posts:
BogRollBOGOF · 19/06/2023 20:38

I've found today's fast hard today. Partly hormones and partly the humidity. I normally want to carb my way through PMT.

I did my fitness class this morning, and for that reason had a few additional salted cashews to keep me functioning as the temperature rose.. I'm deferring my run until tomorrow though.

Sooverthemill · 20/06/2023 08:52

Yesterday went well in terms of not feeling hungry until about 1 so it was easy to give myself 16 hours without food. A strawberry slim fast shake (not very nice, won’t get that again) and then the snack pack of sour cream and chive pretzels at 4 took me nicely to my dinner at 6.15 which was delicious (2 slices of prosciutto, asparagus, little gem, cherry tomatoes, some leftover roasted courgette and randomly some falafel that needed using up with a tiny bit of hummus (our shopping comes today)). I weighed everything and scanned barcodes and MFP tells me that was 538 calories. DH added cheese, sourdough bread, crisps and a glass of wine! Later we had strawberries and peach.
