Jiving into January

Thought I would keep with the dancing theme. Happy New Year to everyone. Lets all hope for a much safer 2021.

Even though I wasn't planning to weigh in this morning, I did out of habit and weighed in at 9st5. Take away (very delayed) last night, so not surprised. My aim is to be 9st1ish by the end of January. I'm hoping to get a couple of pounds off for my Birthday on the 9th.

I've just bought replacement smaller versions of bottles for my shake blender. I have a ton of abandoned vanilla whey protein and I suspect upping protein and not letting myself get too hungry is going to be key. Ono and skimmed milk protein shakes and lots of eggs, fish and chicken.

I think making small portions of overnight oats ready for late night munchies helps me but need to work out how many calories that entails. Knowing I can have something before bed really helps as I can't sleep hungry.

drspouse · 28/01/2021 15:21

I'm the queen of apps so I just pop all my meals on to MFP and don't really think about what the calories are so to speak, except when I work out what I've got left for evening snack.

IDontMindMarmite · 28/01/2021 16:25

How do you get to be the Queen of Apps? Grin

TheHoneyBadger · 28/01/2021 20:36

I have good things to report for once. I fasted for 22hrs and then stayed under 500cals this evening mostly from protein. Basically the 5:2 recommendations rather than winging it.

I would like to do this 2 days a week plus calorie counting for most other days. I want to say all but it doesn't sound sustainable and I'd hope with the 5:2 I'm buying myself a little extra for one day a week.

I've also managed to get up and move at least every hour and I've just taken the dog for a brisk walk before bedtime.
Will see how it goes.

Thanks for putting up with me.

Hi guys, would love to join you all.
I'm stressed! I started a diet jan 1st. I've cut out meat, drinking 2 litres of water a day, walking at least 10,000 steps a day, working out every day and cut down alcohol massively. I weighed myself today and guess how much I've lost? Absolutely nothing. Not a pound. What the actual!!! Does anybody have any advice! Really disheartening and makes me think what's the point x

drspouse · 29/01/2021 08:24

When you say "diet", are you weighing/measuring what you eat?

Octopus37 · 29/01/2021 08:30

Welcome Courtney, can be really disheartening when that happens. Maybe try and write down or log everything you eat. How much are you looking to lose? So so here, very bad night's sleep, DH had something happen at work yesterday was up late with him cause he was worried, and he lost his wallet. Up now and trying to wake up. Glad its Friday.

TheHoneyBadger · 29/01/2021 08:37

Did you cut out meat in the hopes you'd lose weight or for other reasons? What are you eating for protein and how much?

Scales are down today after the fast/500cals.

Now the trick is not to overeat today. I will do a 16hr fast window which will take me through to 1.30 and then eat the small Ono portion with added protein powder. Not sure about dinner tonight. Ds wants stir fry noodles and I need to use the ingredients but wouldn't be the best use of calories for me so I will have to think of something else for me.

Courtney10891 · 29/01/2021 08:37

To be honestly Ive not been weighing my food or tracking it so I've decided i will really focus on that because clearly something is going wrong somewhere. I have two young children (3 & 1) so I tend to eat the same dinners as them. I would ideally like to lose a stone x

drspouse · 29/01/2021 09:52

Without meaning to nag, you do need to know what you've been eating.

Courtney10891 · 29/01/2021 16:53

No you're totally right. I've been eating very healthily and it over doing it but keeping track of my food should definitely help

TheHoneyBadger · 29/01/2021 16:55

Slight fuck up today as after my kw lesson today I went to work in the staff room and there was a tray of leftover sandwiches. I don't generally eat bread but may have gotten a bit carried away plus I sat still at laptop too long.

I'm still stuffed now though so I'll just try and make it an upside down calories day if that makes sense. And I'll try to get my steps up. More snow overnight and tomorrow apparently so will walk to the shop and stock up on wine and snacks for ds. The wine is for me obviously. I'm not that bad a parent

IDontMindMarmite · 29/01/2021 19:58

Spending a whole month feeling like you're depriving yourself with nothing to show for it must be a bit heartbreaking! I suspect there will be some sneaky calories undermining your hard work: cooking oil, wine/alcohol, milky sugary tea etc etc.

Also, if you don't have a lot to lose, your calorie deficit will be smaller so it will take you longer to lose. That's not a bad thing! But something to bear in mind before you say 'fuck it' and give up!

If you want to log and track calories My Fitness Pal and Lose It are the most popular.

IDontMindMarmite · 29/01/2021 19:59

That's to @Courtney10891 by the way, welcome welcome Smile

TheHoneyBadger · 29/01/2021 21:21

I have managed to end the day with a 1000cal deficit despite the bread attack at school had a small portion of ono and a handful of nuts this evening.

Yesterday should have been about 1700 deficit. I was down 2lbs this morning but presume a lot of that would've been water bloat loss from the low carbs and first extended fast in a while so maybe not a real loss.

I'm in the pre period week though and I remember that video on how we burn more calories at that time. Way tmi but I also haven't had a bm for a couple of days so am tentatively hopeful if I can keep up the 16 hour fasting windows and watching calories I might have a decent loss in the first week. That's a double if though so I need some self discipline.

FlatteredRhubardFool · 29/01/2021 23:26

Flattered is going to try for a FlatterFebruary. Monday is the 1st so a new month and it starts on a Monday so I'll take that as a sign that that is when I'm mean to hop back on the wagon. I have cut down on late night eating and chocolate and crisp consumption and have also dropped from 2 slices of toast to 1 in the morning. I'd like to get back to the porridge habit but I can't be bothered a lot of the time. The lack of exercise needs addressing. I really must get out for a daily walk. I've not had much energy since that last virus and course of steroids and have just not bothered with anything. Some days I eat cereal for lunch or dinner and there's been lots of toast. Some soup and healthy stuff too but I could do a whole lot better.
I'll try and catch up on the thread but might just wait for the new one.
Welcome @Courtney10891 Smile

IDontMindMarmite · 29/01/2021 23:28

Wow those are some very big deficits Badger

drspouse · 30/01/2021 07:54

Naggy McNagface who doesn't believe in fasting here, so take this with a pinch of salt, but that doesn't sound healthy and definitely not sustainable.
Just 3/4 lb off here. Nearly 5lb off this month. Pleased with that, and my walking every day seems to be helping my blood pressure too.
Got some challah from the local bakery and had some for snack last night and breakfast today. May have left a bit for DH.

IDontMindMarmite · 30/01/2021 08:08

Nearly 5lb in a month, very well done @drspoouse, what an accomplishment.

By the skin of my teeth i've managed to maintain my pre-christmas weight. I'm really delighted, although I was fearful that it would take the whole month to lose the bloat and it did, at least it went eventually.

drspouse · 30/01/2021 08:19

My weight is almost down to my lowest 2020 weight too.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 30/01/2021 10:01

Hi all and well done, great strides being made! I am doing OK here, not binging, keeping an eye on steps and water but not doing great discipline wise. I am assignmenting again so about to turn off phone but wanted to check in. Hope you're all doing OK.

FlatteredRhubardFool · 30/01/2021 10:25

I was brave and got on the scales: 62.5kg. That's with period bloat too. The weather is awful here today but we are going to go for a good walk to blow away the cobwebs.

TheHoneyBadger · 30/01/2021 11:58

Was that directed at me Drs? We generally tend to avoid lecturing and judging on this thread. It's what makes it nice.

Clearly not sustainable - it was due to having had a fast day. You don't have to 'believe in' anything. That's the nice thing about this thread that it's always been accepting of people's different methods rather than a calorie counting thread, or a fasting thread, or a low carb thread and doesn't get religious or preachy therefore.

Marmite - I'm including exercise calories so not a deficit from bmr and exercise calories are obviously inaccurate often. The fitbit just keeps a running tally all day of what you're burning and therefore what you could eat to sustain a 1000calorie deficit (which is 2lbs a week which at my weight is not a great deal and my bmr is higher from being so fat).

Octopus37 · 30/01/2021 20:24

I agree, think we all need to be non-judgey, without stating the obvious we are all different and there is no one size fits all weight loss method. HoneyBadger, you sound as if you are doing really well. Massive well done on loosing 5 pounds Dr Spouse.

I 'm not doing very well here, lets just say takeaways have featured heavily. Aiming to start again properly on 1st Feb (Monday), will try and have a better day and weigh in on Monday.

Hope everyone has had a good Saturday. We have made it through January which is an achievement in itself.

Right I'm with you octopus. Recommiting to a daily 10k steps to get started. Assignment to be finished today so tomorrow will be start and I always do it on Monday so a good start. Will make it an appointment after that. I miss the structure and variety of normal life, have slipped back to the comfort food as a lift and a pleasure... Not prepared to accept the gain and know I can kick it with a few good weeks. Hope you all have a lovely Sunday.
