I’ve gained a whopping 2 stone since March, and have an overall 3-4 stone to lose. This is a combination of : alcohol/crisps/general boredom snacking while WFH and a very sedentary lifestyle.

I used to walk 5-7k steps most days just going to work/out and about at weekends, but now seem to be glued to my office chair or sofa and am really feeling the ill-effects... also without the motivation of social life I have been less inclined to look after myself .

Does anyone want to join me on a push to be less sedentary (& eat healthily) to lose weight

My focus is:

  • 10k steps/day minimum
  • healthy (mostly unprocessed food) diet
  • limiting empty calories from alcohol & sugar

Just got a fit bit to count steps, & will be going for a walk/jog 1st thing to get most of my steps in, then making myself have a few other breaks in the day to get the numbers up

Yes me!! I have about 2 stone to lose after having my son dec 19 and have tried abs failed a few times. Really need a kick up the backside to get going. I'm quite an active person, I have horses etc but going to really try and make an effort to shift it now!

10kaDay · 30/12/2020 06:12

Thank you - I love your username sofaking!!!

I initially read that as baby born on 19th Dec and thought you were being a bit harsh on yourself as it’s only been 10 days... !

Do you have a plan/timeline in mind? Am planning to give it a big old push til Easter and hoping for 2st off by then (it’s a lot, but as I’m so much heavier than usual and have been eating SO MANY empty calories and averaging about 100 steps/day I think it’s realistic!). Even 1stone would be a step in the right direction...

Oh I'll join you! I'm my fattest ever!
Need to lose 3-4st, I'm so tired all the time and I refuse to have another summer like this year's again, nothing to wear, hot, fat, sweaty mess.

10kaDay · 30/12/2020 06:19

Hi Ellie - getting thanks, getting back into my summer clothes is a big goal for me too.

I've literally just written a post like this on another thread. I'm horrified by my own reflection, and feeling puffed out even bending down.

I'm in .

2 stone odd weight ain't this year as well - would like to lose 4 but 3 would make feel feel and look a lot like the old me

10kaDay · 30/12/2020 06:35

Hello @AGoatsbawhairaway: thanks for joining me! I just looked up your post and the ‘pretend commute’ made me laugh!

Sounds like the amount to lose/plan/circumstances are very similar...
I’m going to go for an hours walk later this morning (when it’s light) and see how many steps that is, then make up some pretend reasons to leave the house after that ... possibly nipping to greengrocer EVERY SINGLE DAY

I’m choosing to focus on the walking as it’s a more positive goal, but making big diet changes to lose the weight too. That said, when I started working and had a 30 min walk there & back the weight dropped off efffortlesly, so I know that simply walking more makes a huge difference too

@gotham: I’ve just done so

Hello. I lost 2 stone pre Lockdown and now put on 3...i would say I'm ashamed but mostly I'm disturbed but proud of the eating effort in Lockdown! I reckon I know have 4 stone to loose ugh to get to pre baby weight.
I've been doing couch to 5k and lost 1/2 stone just prior to Xmas but now eaten some. Of that back on and the snow here means I've not run.
Any ideas ideas for getting moving with an evil 2 year old and full time work? Also avoiding leftover xmas choc tips please!

Randomrebel · 30/12/2020 07:43

Can i join from NY day? Horrified I am 6ft tall but weighed in at 21 stone yesterday!!! My heaviest weight ever, fat face, big fat belly, but weight has gone on everywhere now. Even 14 stone would be lovely.

I am menopausal, have an under active thyroid, am asthmatic and have another health condition which puts me on the shielded list (I go out for walks to boost my mood and escape but don’t often see anyone socially other than for dog walks so lost my mojo and eating snacking for Europe) also under a lot of stress as my dad died in April, mum lonely, have two teenagers (DD vicious about my appearance don’t want teens to be ashamed of me if the world ever gets back to normal), WFH and worrying about DH who is going through a health scare.
Planning on increasing steps to 10K a day every day (no excuses), eating healthier logging food honestly on phone somehow? If doesn’t work I may join WW/SW online. Fed up with self and appearance and as a tall and fat person I can’t get clothes anymore.

10kaDay · 30/12/2020 07:52

@Pleaseaddcaffine: couch2 5k sounds like a great effort! I used to be able to run 5k relatively easily but total inactivity for 6 months means I n now run about 5 steps Shock. I plan to get back into it ...

Leftover Xmas chocs: Im going to food bank/palm off on friends some of this stuff, & may simply throw away a couple of things (giant pot of cream & big tub of Nutella). Normally I hate wasting food, but it’s £5 worth if that, won’t do anyone any good, and contains about a million calories... I’d pay £5 to lose a pound or two so that’s the logic...

I was given some good chocs for Xmas (Lindt) so keeping those for Easter hols as a treat :)

OP posts:
Pleaseaddcaffine · 30/12/2020 07:58

I scoffed my lindt. I was raring for a triathalon pre baby bu 2 years on and couch to 5k is agony. I run like a snail in treacle but it's better than being stationary.
I need to do more, I'm 6ft too but god I'm heavy now and I'm usually pretty balze about my size!
I ate all my lindt mmmmmm but I need to chuck everything else. Problem. With the kids is you can't chuck everything away and there are always crisps etc in the house

10kaDay · 30/12/2020 07:58

@Randomrebel: sorry to hear about your dad, sounds like you’ve had a awful year. My closest local friend (who I’m bubbling with) is shielding so I’m basically shielding too (no shops except outdoor greengrocer etc), it’s v limiting.

Part of my reason for wanting to get back my fitness is to have a positive goal for the next few months: lack of time/social occasions have got in the way in the past but I don’t see that as an issue for the next few months!

For food logging I use my fitness pal which is a free app

Are you going to walk today to start the build up?

Madcats · 30/12/2020 08:02

Can I join in too?

Back in the first lockdown we were really good, but we really fell out of the habit of going out. I need to stop slumping in front of the TV at night with a bottle of wine.

10kaDay · 30/12/2020 08:04

@Randomrebel: are there any crisp flavours kids like but you hate? I have junk in for when friend comes round : BBQ Pringles currently - am veggie so would never touch those

Re WFH: I’ve never done this, but I know it’s possible to join Teams calls from a phone so may do that for some of the less important ones to see if in can squeeze a few steps in that way.

Also planning a few quick breaks in day to walk around- eg if a couple of minutes between meetings, or a 15/20 min walk in morning/ afternoon for a break (possibly with my phone!)

OP posts:
10kaDay · 30/12/2020 08:06

@Madcats: but of course! I was pretty good in April/May then became a total couch potato!

Work being busy didn’t help but I think I should still be able to manage 1 hour a day to be on my feet...

thetrees · 30/12/2020 08:06

I'd love to join you. At the beginning of November I set myself a target of 5000 steps a day but ended up averaging more than 10 000. The weight dropped off but I've put it all back on over a spell of flu and Christmas.

I was thinking a morning walk and a lunchtime one too. A bit tricky for me when kids are at home, easy when they're at their dads

Randomrebel · 30/12/2020 08:18

Thanks @10kaDay I will download that today will start properly with food after NYD. Good idea about the crisps but I don’t think I have discovered a flavour of crisps or biscuits that I don’t like. Will move back to storing crisps and biscuits in the car boot to assist my giving way to temptation. But yes have been averaging just over 10K a day since this weekend with two-three walks a day which I have thoroughly enjoyed as the days have been frosty and bright (my favourite) and also had two night time walks in the dark after 7pm with a good friend (we are tier 2) who is a night owl and good company so have felt very uplifted afterwards. Fortunately we live in a nice area with some nice walks literally on my door step so I have been varying them and doing them in reverse etc.

10kaDay · 30/12/2020 08:19

Hello @thetrees - sorry to hear about the flu, that would set anyone back! Sounds like you are the proof the walks work :)

How old are your kids? Can you walk circuits around your garden? (Deathly dull I know, but my mum does this)

@10kaDay I’ve responded. Thank you

10kaDay · 30/12/2020 08:21

@Randomrebel: car boot is a good idea :) I’m going to move some of my junk to storage crate I have in spare room - it’s on top of a wardrobe and I need to drag a chair in to get to it, so I think the hassle will put me off impulse snacking

I’ve just found this calculator which gives the miles/calorie burn of 10,000 steps

In my case it’s 4.4 miles as a slow walk, 5.1 miles if fast (4mph).

A brisk walk, would be around 500 calories at my goal weight, but is a whopping 677 (!) calories at my current weight

Usual plan is to do little bits in the day after a main morning walk but as I have the day off I plan to just go out & knock out a big walk here and now... will report back

I'll join! I also have 3-4 stone to lose and got a right telling off from a doctor on Xmas eve, so in a mission to not put on too much weight over Xmas I committed to doing at least 10k steps a day starting from Monday 28th which I have smashed both days.
I go to the gym too but I was struggling to find the motivation in the run up to Xmas especially as I'm tier 3 and classes aren't currently allowed, however I'm really going to try my best to go 4 times a week from next Monday (all classes are being held virtually so I can do classes from home some days).
Not sure how I'm going to manage my steps today but will report back later!
