I’ve gained a whopping 2 stone since March, and have an overall 3-4 stone to lose. This is a combination of : alcohol/crisps/general boredom snacking while WFH and a very sedentary lifestyle.

I used to walk 5-7k steps most days just going to work/out and about at weekends, but now seem to be glued to my office chair or sofa and am really feeling the ill-effects... also without the motivation of social life I have been less inclined to look after myself .

Does anyone want to join me on a push to be less sedentary (& eat healthily) to lose weight

My focus is:

  • 10k steps/day minimum
  • healthy (mostly unprocessed food) diet
  • limiting empty calories from alcohol & sugar

Just got a fit bit to count steps, & will be going for a walk/jog 1st thing to get most of my steps in, then making myself have a few other breaks in the day to get the numbers up

A Sunday weekly update sounds good to me! My ankle didn't feel too bad once I started walking so ended up doing a bigger loop than planned, on 7.2k so far and plan to spend the rest of the day on the couch so even though I probably won't get 10k I have at least smashed my 6.5k target.

thetrees · 01/01/2021 13:53

10 000 steps done and really really looking forward to a month with it alcohol. Felt so groggy and tired this morning

ajandjjmum · 01/01/2021 15:51

So....went on a lovely snowy walk, normally between 7 and 8,000 steps, and my iphone only recorded 3,800. Are they known to be unreliable? Honestly, I'm not making excuses at the first hurdle! Grin

wizzbangfizz · 01/01/2021 15:58

In starting in earnest Monday and the Sunday check in sounds good.

onemouseplace · 01/01/2021 16:04

I'm definitely in! Just weighed in this morning and was horrified!

I really want to focus on doing positive things for my health this January - I really, really don't want to slide back into being a semi-hermit knocking back the booze as a coping mechanism which is what has led to much of this year's weight gain from the first lockdown!

I have a good 3-4 stone to lose, but would be very happy with anything to be honest!

beautyboxaddict · 01/01/2021 16:07

Oooh hello, I’ve found my people! Currently on 5662 steps so I’ve got work to do.

At least 3st to lose (that’s just to get me back into a healthy BMI bracket) and I’ve done it before with sensible eating, walking and a shitload of water so that’s the plan.

I have approximately 11 billion Lindt balls in the house but I can restrain myself to one a day with a coffee so that’s good. Hopefully they’ll be gone by next Christmas.

I’ve been WFH full time since March and I really miss the steps from my commute. I do have a (lazy and quite old) dog so have to get out every day and I also have a recently acquired home treadmill so shouldn’t have too many problems getting the steps in.

Roll on Monday when DH goes back to work and I can attempt some kind of routine. He’s not worked for over half of 2020 through a mixture of furlough and redundancy and it’s been hard!

Happy to have stumbled on this thread. I've got my 40th looming and about 40kg to lose. I won't manage that for my birthday but would like to get as close as possible by end of year. I lost about 10kg a few months ago but have put a couple back on with Christmas. But need to buckle down now- my health and confidence are very much at stake.

cissyandbessy · 01/01/2021 16:58

Thanks all for Fitbit recs. Will have a looksie. Have managed 2 miles walking per day this week which honestly has been quite hard! But here's hoping it will get easier. I have a standing desk set up (a still on a cabinet) but it involves some farting around uncoupling the 2 screen set up I have. But if I'm honest it also makes me feet hurt standing up for long so think I'll have to build up to it. Can't believe I'm so unfit at the moment. But hey ho, little and often eh? And the first few weeks are always gonna be hardest...

10kaDay · 01/01/2021 18:31

Hello Ladies, back from the walk and have done 12,974 steps... it goes a lot faster with company so will try to do that as much as possible... now parked on the sofa for the evening :)

Hello @wizzbangfizz, @onemouseplace**,**@beautyboxaddict, and @RooMama - great to have you along for the -ride- walk!

@onemouseplace: I think this is a great way to think ... there are very few things we CAN do now, but improving our health is something we can do and get the benefits of so something positive to focus on

@beautyboxaddict - those Lindt balls sound tasty!! Also missing HAVING to walk ... will be interested to hear your updates on how much use your treadmill gets (the peloton treadmill ads caught my eye yesterday, but £££ and nowhere to put it..)

@roomama - love the way you put it ‘my health & confidence are at stake’.. how many months til your bday?

10kaDay · 01/01/2021 18:39

@ajandjjmum: that is frustrating! I think the suggestion to count 10 mins on your feet as a thousand steps from @LarsErickssong was a good one

@cissyandbessy: also experimenting with standing desks... apparently they are not that great for hours on end so I’m planning to use for a few short stints (& like you have 2 screens so that can be a complication)

@10kaDay my birthday is start of June so got some time to make an impact. I'd be absolutely thrilled if I could lose 20kg by then but I don't want to get caught up on milestones that aren't directly related to feeling healthier.

On the step count, I've only managed 6000 steps today but I've got a heavy cold (definitely not Covid) and been taking it easy during the day as I've been coughing a lot in the night and losing sleep. Might try to do some steps in front of the telly this evening.

10kaDay · 01/01/2021 18:47

@RooMama: that’s definitely time to see a visible change ... hopefully it will be possible for you to celebrate in person by then :)

You have all inspired me to convert the chest of drawers in my office (well spare bedroom..) into a standing desk. I do use 2 screens but there's some things I don't need both screens for so I might start standing up more when I don't need them both.
My initial aim is to lose a stone in the next 12 weeks which is when I am due back at the doctors, the doctor on Xmas eve was most bothered about my BMI being over 35 and if I lost exactly a stone it would make my BMI 34.9.
Today's steps 8,101 with 51,582 for the week so I'm happy with that Smile

10kaDay · 01/01/2021 20:38

@LarsErickssong - roll on Monday, may 2021 be the year of standing desks!!

14k steps done yesterday which I was quite pleased with, not sure how today will go. Have ended up picking up an extra shift which meant a v early start and not a lot of movement now I'm here!

10kaDay · 02/01/2021 10:36

@muddledmidget -well done! You’ve banked half of today’s steps anyway. Can you try to move a bit more than usual during your work day?

Am going for a walk with a friend shortly, expect we will get 6-7k steps in, then plan to do a YouTube video when I get back to make up the steps

Had a good day food wise yesterday, which apart from NYE makes it a very virtuous first 5 days. Food shop is coming later so I will make a meal plan & do some prepping so I have healthy meals in for the week which is going to be really key this week as predict getting back to work after a lovely week off will be a shock!

Some of these steps counts are impressive well done all! Hope to join you all with an impressive count by the end of the day!

Looking forward to your update @wizzbangfizz! Have a great day all :)

Well done everyone! I managed 10,643 yesterday, and this thread is already inspiring me as we'd probably not leave the house today, but I'm going to make us go for a walk this afternoon!

Now we're homeschooling for the next two weeks, it makes it even more important to get out as I won't be logging steps doing the school run.

LarsErickssong · 02/01/2021 13:34

Been put for what turned out to be a very snowy walk but already on 9,399 steps for today, I'm confident that even though I don't plan to move much from the sofa now that I will get 10k!

SunscreenCentral · 02/01/2021 14:30

May I join in? I have piled on 2 stone and a few extra lbs as well.

It’s all sitting on the front - boobs, belly and none of my clothes fit. None of my bras fit. I feel awful. I look like a can of lard.

Bought an Apple Watch, trying to figure it out and I’ve started dry jan as well.

This is the heaviest I’ve ever been and I’m worried that as I’m post menopausal that it’ll be even hard to shift!

Nonetheless- once more into the breach! I’m doing 16:8 1200kcals max with a 40m walk. No yoga studio due to lockdown but I don’t drive. Getting out of the house is the hard part....

Good luck everyone

ajandjjmum · 02/01/2021 15:35

I took myself off on a long walk today - thorough enjoyed having some time on my own. Hadn't decided how far to walk, but ended up doing the longest option, which resulted in 12,097 steps.

Well pleased - and coming on here and bragging (sorry!) was a real motivator when it was getting colder. Thank everyone for being here. Flowers or Wine - your choice! Grin

Only trouble is that I was out for nearly 2 hours, and I'm not sure I'm going to be able to do that every day - at least there's a target though!

10kaDay · 02/01/2021 17:30

Afternoon ladies ... glad to hear it’s been a positive day @onemouseplace, @LarsErickssong, and @ajandjjmum, and welcome @SunscreenCentral

@onemouseplace: great numbers yesterday, look forward to the afternoon update
@LarsErickssong - nice work, especially in the ❄️!

@ajandjjmum: Star ! giving you a place to brag is the whole point of this thread! I’m also worried about time aspect once back at work... I’ve been making myself a YouTube workout playlist of do-able cardio workouts which are mostly walking/standing cardio (we’ve got Gina B, Some popsugar workouts from Jeanette Jenkins and Anna Renderer and some old skool Cher because - why not?!). Can post links if anyone is keen?

@SunscreenCentral ... none of my bras fit either Sad. Bought a couple of cheapies in Dec but am looking forward to getting back to a more normal size for me and burning the damn things, along with the leggings and giant scruffy jumpers 🔥 🔥 🔥 Dry January will make the a difference too... I’m 40s too so realise it may take more effort now than it used to...

Am very glad to be doing this as a group Smile

@SunscreenCentral I had to buy bra extenders last year - the shame.

cissyandbessy · 02/01/2021 17:57

Hey All! Have managed to still
Walk 2 miles each day and am still
Aching and have niggly bits of me that are just a bit knackered, feet knees and hips! Have not started yet on better diet but have shopping delivery on the way and will make a meal plan tomorrow. Plus I can't eat any more Xmas chocolate (coz I ate it all today 🙄). Well done you guys doing 10k + steps. Very impressed!
