I’ve gained a whopping 2 stone since March, and have an overall 3-4 stone to lose. This is a combination of : alcohol/crisps/general boredom snacking while WFH and a very sedentary lifestyle.

I used to walk 5-7k steps most days just going to work/out and about at weekends, but now seem to be glued to my office chair or sofa and am really feeling the ill-effects... also without the motivation of social life I have been less inclined to look after myself .

Does anyone want to join me on a push to be less sedentary (& eat healthily) to lose weight

My focus is:

  • 10k steps/day minimum
  • healthy (mostly unprocessed food) diet
  • limiting empty calories from alcohol & sugar

Just got a fit bit to count steps, & will be going for a walk/jog 1st thing to get most of my steps in, then making myself have a few other breaks in the day to get the numbers up

@cissyandbessy I have the Fitbit versa lite which I love as it looks more like a watch than the Fitbit charge 2 which I had before this, I got in on offer on Amazon about 18 months ago for £130. I got the lite version as it does everything I need it too, it's also waterproof which is an added bonus.

@10kaDay that's interesting about the pennies. I used to 'pay' myself a pound for every lb I lost back when I did slimming world. It was a good motivator so I might do something like that again.

I've just got on the scales and am horrified. I'm the heaviest I have ever been, including when I was pregnant.

Most the Xmas food is now gone and I've just done an online shop for next week full of what my children say is 'ingredients, not food'.

I'm aiming for 7lbs in my first week then 3-4lbs a week thereafter.
I think we can encourage each other, but I need accountability as well.

Hello @cissyandbessy: I’m on day 1 of using a fit bit inspire, like it a lot, it’s v comfy and was quick to set up (5 mins), intuitive to use. Think they are £50

My sister has this one which cost only £20 and is v happy with it www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B076HKV1FS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8

Seeing the info right there makes it hard to kid yourself...

@Jemmy360: wow, 7 pounds in 1 week? What plan will you be doing?

OP posts:
10kaDay · 30/12/2020 17:59

I was just reading another thread on here and a couple of things really stood out for me:

  • having a plan with lots of quick & easy meals
  • going cold turkey on the junk (at least for Jan I’d say)
  • dry January
... am going to do these 3 things in addition to the steps

With latest news, I’m guessing non-vulnerable adults might be vaccinated May/June time... I changed jobs in lockdown 1 so have never met my colleagues, would like to be back in clothes that have a waistband by the time I do!

@cissyandbessy: I feel exactly the same, bleuurgh and crunchy!

Are you able to fashion a standing desk of some sort (I have a high chest of drawers next to my desk and use that for some calls), or move around a bit during workday? I’m trying to figure out how I can do that as work is pretty full on ...

I always drop a fair bit in the first week of eating properly, @10kaDay, most of it is water I'm sure.

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 30/12/2020 18:12

I would love to join you but not until
4th January. That's the official end of Christmas in our house!

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 30/12/2020 18:13

I suspect I'm back to being 2 stone overweight.

@Mumisnotmyonlyname: Mondays are also traditional for starting diets! It will be my day of reckoning as back to work so fitting it all in will be the challenge next week

Well the gym this evening never happened, my little didn't go to bed till gone 8 and I'm knackered. However have done 9,500 steps and 700 calories just doing my normal day to day activities. Am definitely going to do dry January and I'm thinking of trying to give up sugar (mainly chocolate) too. I think actually if I just stopped eating crap (and the remainder of my toddlers dinners) I should be able to lose a bit just without the vino and chocolate Grin

10kaDay · 30/12/2020 22:26

@sofakingawesome: I call it a win!

Am with you on the dry January and laying off the sugar... bottle of the good stuff but probably no dessert for me on NYE and then back to business

10,807 steps yesterday, I'm going to struggle a bit today as I'm driving to see DP for the weekend (support bubble) but I'm just about to start the day with a gym class which should give me atlesst 2k I hope. Will re evaluate and see how many more I need to do once I get to DP's and potentially drag him out on a walk.

10kaDay · 31/12/2020 10:54

@LarsErickssong- good number Star and good plan for today!

Finished yesterday at 11,81 steps

Today I will go for a walk for around 8k steps shortly, then I have some decluttering which will keep me on my feet for the rest..

How’s everyone else doing? Ready for tonight? I’m looking forward to a nice meal (roast dinner but with mash/lots of veg) and some Wine later

I am aiming for at least 7.5k to start with (even if it means walking up and down the stairs to get over the number - excellent exercise for the heart!). I did a rather frosty walk/slide this morning but only seemed to clock up 5,000 steps. I think I am going to go out later and walk exactly 500 steps to check my watch isn't slacking.

I've done a few dry Januarys in my time. I suppose it depends on your personality but I don't try to cut out all bad habits and ensure I always have a treat a week (be it a bunch of flowers or something frivolous).

Good luck all. Now we're in tier 3 at least I am not going to feel guilty about not going to the local pubs and restaurants next month.

thetrees · 31/12/2020 19:40

11 000 today - have started including steps at home which felt like cheating but which actually makes me more active

LarsErickssong · 31/12/2020 20:06

Only 7k here which I expected, but I'm on 43k for the week and as long as I get 70k a week I'll be happy so as I'm over 10k average a day I'm not too worried.

10kaDay · 31/12/2020 20:31

Good numbers here @Madcats, @thetrees and @LarsErickssong... I think weekly is fine too, I will probably end up playing catch up sometimes myself

Happy New Year for later to all..

Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow

PS- 11k for my walk, another 2k in the house for 13k today... going for a walk with a friend tomorrow so racking up those steps will be more enjoyable on NYD Smile

muddledmidget · 31/12/2020 20:41

I would love to join you, I always seem to manage my weight better when I'm keeping active so 10k steps a day (or 70k a week as some days are 12-14 hour shifts on my feet but not really stepping). Have got a fitbit if anyone wants to do any weekly challenges

ajandjjmum · 31/12/2020 21:17

Can I join too please? I need to lose at least a couple of stone - and find motivation to be a real problem. Would be amazing to see a real difference by Easter. My GP would be happy too, as it would reduce my HbA1c levels!

Jenasaurus · 31/12/2020 21:19

Can I join, will start on Monday, my DD got me a fitbit and I want to lose weight for my DS wedding in 2022, so got over a year to lose the pounds and the exercise will help too.

Jemmy360 · 31/12/2020 23:21

10093 today for me. Had a pizza (was homemade though) but otherwise pretty good with food, and no alcohol either. Happy new year all!

LarsErickssong · 01/01/2021 10:28

Happy new year all Smile I've woken up with a bit of a niggle in my ankle so my plan today is to take it easy and just do the 6.5k steps I need to reach 50k (going to go to a local nature reserve which is a favourite walk if ours) and then we have nice walks planned for tomorrow and Sunday so will do 10k steps both of those days.

10kaDay · 01/01/2021 11:56

Morning all (just) Grin

Welcome @muddledmidget, @ajandjjmum and @Jenasaurus!

I’m also aiming for Easter as first chunk of weight loss and wanting to see a difference... I think it’s a decent but doable length of time.

NYE ended up being a later night than planned (Zoom merry-making) and some excess calories consumed Blush. However, probably not more than a day or 2’s walking so not to worry...

I was wondering if in addition to the daily check-ins if it’s a good idea to give a weekly status too in case of catch-ups? I was thinking Sunday afternoon?

Have a good NYD all! Off for a walk on my own in a bit then with my friend
