A weight loss thread with no boring diet info

Hi all
I really need to lose a total of about 4 stone.

I'm not keen on the usual weight loss type chats with methods and foods etc discussed in detail.

So I was trying to think how it could be more interesting.

This might be a crap idea but I know I do better when I have interesting things to do. Today I've done my workout, some drawing and keyboard practice. I've also read a couple of chapters of Women Who Kill (!) and watched The Crown, I'm on Season 2.

It was those things that made snacking on a boiled egg less of a shock 😂

So I was thinking, what about a support thread where we don't talk about the details of our methods, but just check in for support, and tell each other something interesting we've done that day, even just a film we've watched.

Is it a bonkers idea?

(Apologies if I am preaching to the choir).

GwendolineWindowlene · 04/01/2021 15:52

Thanks cat, it's good to remember it might be 2lb of hormones and not Quality Street. Grin

I'll give the Happy Scale app a go.

IHateCoronavirus · 04/01/2021 16:36

Hi everyone, hope you are all doing well. I had a good day here, exceeded my daily steps, helped by IHateCoronaBudgie who sat on my shoulder (for the first time) as I marched up and down the living room Grin

I don’t have bad dandruff honestly, it is just the millet I used to bribe him!

Afternoon everyone, I wore leopard print pants for my training. I hope this is acceptable.

IHateCoronavirus · 04/01/2021 16:46

Grin very acceptable I hoped it helped they day go joyfully!

acatcalledjohn · 04/01/2021 16:53

@GwendolineWindowlene As long as you didn't consume 7000 calories worth of Quality Street you should be fine Grin

Rule of thumb is that approx 3500 calories equals 1lb. So if your weekly deficit is at 3500 cals you'll likely lose around 1lb. Equally overeat by that amount and you'll gain said 1lb. (Obviously personal circumstances vary and thus results may vary.)

That's why I like calorie counting and it's worked for me before: it doesn't take starvation to lose weight. Just keeping track and doing something as simple as controlling the carb part of a meal (weigh your rice/pasta/potatoes) you basically get the often demonised white, starchy carbs but within sensible limits. Veggies, although still carbs, are much healthier carbs, far less calorie dense and thus harder to overeat on those.

Been there, done that, let myself go so here I am again Blush. But going for slow and steady. My aim is to drop around 0.5lb/week because I like don't like to feel hungry...

Excellent!

I see the "no boring diet info" went well 🙄

I'm sorry - but when people worry about a 2lb gain overnight it helps to put their mind at ease.

I spent this evening training outside in the freezing cold. My toes still haven't warmed up.

GinnieHempstock · 04/01/2021 19:42

@MrsBobDylan you are obviously better at multitasking than I am. 😀

I also use a daily weight app - if you can accept the fluctuations, then I think it’s a better way to weigh. You get a nice smooth line instead on the ups and downs - I’ve screen shot mine on my phone and shared. You’ll see Nov/Dec didn’t go quite to plan!

Loving the budgie hitching a lift and @Cocolapew I think leopard print should be mandatory.

First day back at work wasn’t as bad as it could have been and I nipped off early to go for a pre-dinner run. Did a very slow, cold 5.27km. @acatcalledjohn I’ve had to buy myself one of those microwaveable plushies to help me warm up after a run. I was so cold after my run on Sunday, I was literally shaking. The aftermath was worse than the run itself.

Hi 👋 can I join? I know I'm bit late but have been catching up with the thread Smile.

I want to lose 4st...well I could do with losing more but want to be a little bit realistic!

So... I did eat an extra biscuit today but I also managed to get my 10k steps in. I walked into town to exchange an item and swapped it for a nice new notebook to record my weight loss and meal plans in Smile. I know I need to focus more on the positive rather than the negatives.

I think I'm going to make a meal plan for the rest of the week and do a shop tomorrow to get in what I need. I really need to get into a routine because at the moment I just pick at random junk food all day, no structure whatsoever. So that's my main goal Star. I would love to calorie count using MFP, but I get so obsessive about all the measurements being perfect it stresses me out more than anything!

Squidgywoo · 04/01/2021 21:05

Bit of a washout today - started well with some yoga before work but ended up with a migraine by the end of the day and now I just feel rubbish. Love this thread for some positivity though. I definitely need to invest in some more interesting pants for workouts! Grin

AcornAutumn · 04/01/2021 21:27

Cat, welcome along!

I'm trying to form a routine around freelance work. I'm not a big fan of routine so it is a change.

Squidgy - sorry you have a headache, hope it shifts.

Been at mum's on a care visit so busy and active. Definitely indoor workouts only the next few days, looks shit freezing.

Arms not aching after weights yesterday - progress!

I have to have a serious review of my pants, it seems....

I can recommend fleece lined leggings for outdoor workouts. They are so warm and comfortable! Didn't come in fancy prints though.

IHateCoronavirus · 05/01/2021 00:39

Hmmm I’m thinking we need to make the fancy pants thing mandatory. I mean isn’t everyday a special day?
Days off could include AF (definitely not special) and when partaking in DIY. Any other ideas?
Given the new lockdown rules we should probably only wear them locally to encourage us not to stray too far!

acatcalledjohn · 05/01/2021 09:35

I mean isn’t everyday a special day?

We should make them special at least! Especially now. If you can go out only once a day, go out in style?

AcornAutumn · 05/01/2021 10:59

How's everyone's hobbies etc going?

No work today so I am going to do some drawing practice, I could set up for a painting (acrylic) but not sure....perhaps a snowy scene?

I will also workout and do my keyboard practice.

Is it possible to teach yourself guitar, do you think? Yes, I might be getting carried away! 😂

I’ve done an hour’s power walk this morning. Got very sweaty in the sunshine and had to take my coat off. Unfortunately I was only wearing a thin, long sleeved top underneath and no bra, as I thought it would be chillier and I’d need my coat on, so I got a few funny looks!
Worked up a good sweat though.
Decided I’m going to get back into Nordic walking again as I have my own poles.

Today I need to thoroughly wash and hoover everything in the flat as dog has had an attack of fleas. He’s had his treatment so now I need to rid the house of the eggs and larvae to stop them returning. Fun!

At least it will keep me busy and distract me from eating.........

AcornAutumn · 05/01/2021 11:57

Spaniel I'm guessing you're not in the UK?

Fleas - another thing that makes me ponder the reality of pets! 😂

Spanielmadness · 05/01/2021 12:11

@AcornAutumn yes, I’m in the midlands!

GwendolineWindowlene · 05/01/2021 13:23

I took down the Christmas decorations this morning. Boo. Wearing new pants. Hooray!

No walk as yet, it’s freezing here but sunny, so I’ll get out later.

Not a particularly exciting hobby, but I want to get back into reading. I’m going to place an order at the library later on.

SingToTheSky · 05/01/2021 13:39

I am on another weight loss thread so I hope it’s ok if I still join here? Your post really struck a chord with me - I absolutely need to focus on things that are not just food and exercise (and the daily grind of parenting and home ed etc). I feel better when I do things for me and I actually realised recently that I am more likely to eat like crap when I treat myself like crap. Which I do a lot for various reasons (which reminds me I must book my next therapy session).

I am doing a bit of studying and have set up some trackers for things like reading and even Netflix series just to give myself some purpose. I have about 5 stone to lose really, and have various health issues as well as adhd and I’m also autistic. My mental health is crap and I spend too long scrolling online etc.

So today was exciting, my new digital piano arrived! It took a long time to decide to replace my upright (had it 24 years) but so many keys were sticking etc it would have cost more to get it fixed and it made me sad.

I may have got a bit emotional playing it for the first time! But this will give me something else to do just for myself, especially now I have headphones with it and can therefore play any time of day.

SingToTheSky · 05/01/2021 13:47

I’m trying to get back into reading too gwen what kind of stuff do you like? My local library is offering a selection service where you tell them roughly what you like, I thought that was pretty cool.

Cocolapew · 05/01/2021 13:52

@SingToTheSky I'd love to be able to play the piano, I'm v jealous.
@AcornAutumn my DH taught himself the guitar during first lockdown from YouTube, he did pretty well but hasn't had the time to keep it up atm.

I was supposed to be doing more online training today but feel awful so emailed in sick. So I just have plain black pants on.

Cocolapew · 05/01/2021 13:55

Talking of libraries did you know you can join online and borrow books to read online? It's saved me a fortune and I like it to try out different genres from what I usually read without being out of pocket if I don't enjoy it.
