A weight loss thread with no boring diet info

Hi all
I really need to lose a total of about 4 stone.

I'm not keen on the usual weight loss type chats with methods and foods etc discussed in detail.

So I was trying to think how it could be more interesting.

This might be a crap idea but I know I do better when I have interesting things to do. Today I've done my workout, some drawing and keyboard practice. I've also read a couple of chapters of Women Who Kill (!) and watched The Crown, I'm on Season 2.

It was those things that made snacking on a boiled egg less of a shock 😂

So I was thinking, what about a support thread where we don't talk about the details of our methods, but just check in for support, and tell each other something interesting we've done that day, even just a film we've watched.

Is it a bonkers idea?

I'd like to join too. 3 stone to lose. I'm easily tempted and could really do with the support to stay motivated.

PaintTheFence · 29/12/2020 11:03

This is such a good idea for a thread, thanks OP.

I don't want to be in a diet/deprivation mindset, but I definitely do want to be adding in some healthy habits.

AcornAutumn · 29/12/2020 11:06

Glad people like it

I just didn't fancy threads going on about the detail, you know? I just want to live and get it sorted where I can, and we can chat generally as we go along.

Keyboard, you say, OP? As in piano? A plan I had that fell by the wayside in 2020 was regular piano practise. That’s exercise for the fingers at least. Grin

I'm completely new to it. Never learned music. Got told I was tone deaf at school.

I planned to try and learn via lessons when my late father fell ill, so I'm about two years too late to it from what I planned.

I started with a book and an app called Simply Piano. I really enjoy it but
I felt the app was rushing me a bit. I can play a basic beginner version of Singing in the Rain, which is so exciting because three months ago, I could not have told you what a note was on the staff.

But..now trying classical on Simply Piano, I think it rushes and I'm struggling. So I have a new app on trial called Flowkey.

It's like learning a whole new language for me!

Joining!
After losing weight for my wedding which was meant to be in July just gone just went mental with food :( two toddlers in lockdown hasn't helped. But only myself to blame!

My wedding dress now doesn't fit, and I am the heaviest I've ever been in my life! Even when pregnant! So depressing.

I've got until august to get back into my dress need about 12 kilos off for that.

I don't even know if I can do it!

You can!

What's a nice thing you have planned today? Even just a book.

I don't know those apps, Acorn, I played as a youngster and then didn't own a piano for years so I'm getting back into it. I have loads of music, so it's only laziness stopping me getting stuck in. I have an elderly neighbour who is a former piano teacher, and my plan is that when You Know What is over and we can be in each other's houses again, that we will play duets together.

jumper, lockdown has played havoc with everyone's eating habits, so don't be too hard on yourself. That's great that you have your wedding coming up, how exciting to have something to look forward to!

AcornAutumn · 29/12/2020 11:55

I also take a lesson from Grey's Anatomy and take five minutes to dance it out

Here's one for me before I do my workout!

Great thread idea.

I'm in too! I have 5 stone to loose. I'm the heaviest I've ever been and struggling. I was already overweight and heaviest I'd been before I got pregnant and now my baby is 6 months old I'm ready to tackle this.

I've lost weight before and got to a good weight (but still thought I was fat! Looking back at photos of me shows how silly I was!) but I let a bad series of events derail me and I put it all back on.

I know what works for me - exercise, mindset and healthy eating/choices but not following a specific diet.

redfernsydney · 29/12/2020 13:22

Oh @AcornAutumn I love jessica smith too....did resistance band one this morning ( jessica's)
I am in peri menopause and honestly I exercise to give me energy and help me sleep. .always feel worse if I miss a session!

AcornAutumn · 29/12/2020 15:12

Gwen how lovely to have a piano. A house, a cat, a piano - it's my dream!

redfern yes, Jessica is great for so many reasons. I like her manner - I don't want a drill sergeant - and she says she lost 40lb herself so I like that she knows where I'm coming from.

I also like Peanut 😂

I normally do a downloaded workout that I bought from her site - well, i have a series of 10. Today was Interval Mix. I always feel better after. I like her standing ab work too, it's nice to work on balance and not be doing boring crunches all the time.

Hows everyone doing ?

I have been put on 2 separate walks today. The joys of tier 4 and wanting to catchbup with friends .

I have a zoom chat later so a good day of friendship today. Having a soak in the bath so all happy here!

GwendolineWindowlene · 29/12/2020 16:21

Tell us more about Jessica Smith. I need to move more but am no spring chicken. I googled ‘yoga for fat beginners’ this morning. Grin

AcornAutumn · 29/12/2020 16:28

Gwen Re Jessica

My suggestions are probably old because now I use the ones I bought

So for easing into it, there's literally just walk and talk - I did this after a spinal injury

For a nice stretch I like this one

She also has HIIT, and longer workouts with weights.

Everyone has lovely things going on Smile

I had a sea swim with a friend this morning (I'm not in the UK) and it was glorious. Going to go for a walk after dinner.

GwendolineWindowlene · 29/12/2020 16:54

Thanks Acorn, I’ll have a look at those!

Rustyigloo · 29/12/2020 16:59

Im starting the couch 25k again. I only seem to be able to lose weight when I do lots of exercise.

One of the bonuses of running outside is that today I spotted a field mouse and there are lots of daffodils trying to push their way through the ground. I can't wait for spring.

Squidgywoo · 29/12/2020 17:05

May I join in? I’ve lost 4 stone since September 2019 and still have another 3 to go but I’m flagging. I did c25k during lockdown and loved it but work and bad weather make it difficult to keep going at the moment. I’ve been using totalbodyproject workouts on YouTube and also yoga with Adrienne and use mfp to keep track of eating (although that’s gone out the window over the last 3 weeks!) The Jessica Smith stuff looks interesting-I might try one tomorrow. Today I did a TBP HIIT workout and took my lovely dog for a muddy walk in the woods.

AcornAutumn · 29/12/2020 17:29

Welcome one and all!

In theory, I'd love a dog

In practice

  1. poo
  2. having to walk them in this weather!!

Distraction works for me.
I used to be very slim and had an amazing toned body. Even had a ‘v’ down to my pubis. Then slipped a disc.

I need to loose at least a stone by July. I was doing well in October/November, then it all went wrong..........

Dog won’t leave the house some days, so I need more motivation to go out alone and also to distract myself rather than watching tv and eating crap.

Eggsley · 29/12/2020 17:46

I haven't done many steps today, not even 3,000 yet! I have been to the tip (the queue meant it took over an hour to get in), paid a couple of cheques in at the bank and been to the pet shop, which is more than I've done over the last few days. After a manic year with work, I am enjoying a few days of laziness before starting a new job on 4th Jan.

AcornAutumn · 29/12/2020 17:55

Spaniel now I have an image of a stroppy dog, arms folded, looking at the cold with a think bubble over his head saying "fuggidaboutit".

I thought that having watched people trudge up and down past our old house in all weathers but it’s not so bad going out when it’s awful when there’s a reason to go. Also, we live right next to wild woodland now so no need to worry about picking up poo 95% of the time (always have bags with me just in case though - ever the responsible dog owner!) Having her has made a massive difference to my mood too - I look forward to getting up most mornings so I can walk her before work and I love coming home to her enthusiastic wags and kisses in the evening. I just wish she could run with me. She’s a bit of a nutter and would not want to go at my slow, shuffling pace!
