Is anyone planning on losing weight in 2021, but without following any specific diet?

I’ve tried low carb, plant based, GI diets, sugar free...the list goes on.

But i know that for me, I just need to eat better and move more. I can’t imagine the rest of my life without rice/chocolate etc, and if my weightloss is going to be sustainable, it can’t exclude any food groups.

So my plan is to just eat less unhealthy foods, and eat more veggies.
I’m starting today, but am aware that others may want to wait till new year, that’s fine.

Anyone else want to join me?

I have not had a good start - somehow put on 1.1lb 🤔😳 I have been quite a carb fiend though so probably not that surprising even if I’m eating less overall. Definitely not as active as I need to be either.

Bookaholic73 · 04/01/2021 14:57

@CosyAcorn I love toast too, and all bagels are heaven. But must resist, as it bloats me so badly!

@LightandAiry I have 2 cavaliers. They are so lazy, never want to go walks! But they’ve been enjoying the morning ones recently.
I would t worry about sticking to your plan, just as long as you’re eating better and moving more, I’m sure it’ll come off.

@ApolloandDaphne I don’t think I could cope with daily weighing. I’m already nervous about weighing on Friday!

@SingToTheSky DH and I have only been married for 10 months and we have only spent half the time sharing the same bed because of his snoring. I’m such a light sleeper, and his snoring is VERY loud. Before he gained weight, he barely snored!

@Daisychainsandlaughs wow, well done on that loss! Do you TTS k it somewhere daily, or do you only track your weekly weight?

@peachgreen wow, that’s an amazing weight loss. I know it wasn’t for a nice reason, but it’s good that you are feeling better physically with the weightloss.

@SingToTheSky how often are you weighing? My weight fluctuates so much on a daily basis, hence why I only weigh weekly.
I’m just as guilty with the lack of exercise too!

Lunch today was just a handful of things on a plate Blush I have some cheese, olives, cured meats and 3 crackers. It was delicious!

Thanks @Bookaholic73, it's definitely given me more energy which is what I need right now so am pleased.

CosyAcorn · 04/01/2021 16:09

Congratulations @peachgreen that's incredible!

SingToTheSky · 04/01/2021 16:44

I’m going to weigh in on Mondays. I was doing it daily a couple of months ago but I found the fluctuations too demotivating although I know it might have been sensible to track more to work out my usual pattern of gain/loss around my period.

Slightly worried about what a lockdown (if that’s announced here tonight) will mean for outdoor exercise? At least we will have nursery runs though if that’s still open.

peachgreen · 04/01/2021 16:45

I have a lot more to lose than most @CosyAcorn so it explains why it's happened fast!

Bookaholic73 · 04/01/2021 17:13

@SingToTheSky I’m a bit worried about exercise if there is another lockdown too.
But last lockdown I totally succumbed to social media influence, and bought a popular fitness influencers ebook.

The exercises are HARD CORE for a beginner like me, and even my PT friend said they were definitely more suited to advanced exercisers!
If you get stuck for exercise, let me know and I’ll email the ebook across to you! Same offer goes to everyone else.

I’m going to be doing that exercise program for the time being...or at least what I can manage of it!

DH and I popped out to get some milk and bacon just a minute ago and I was so tempted to get wine and chocolate. SO DESPERATE.
But I didn’t. Really pleased with myself.

Well done book every time you resist it’s a win!

I really need to start getting some lunches sorted for myself, I am just eating rubbish in the day really.

I have been weighing every couple of days to motivate myself, but am tracking weekly using my fitness pal and Fitbit apps. I don’t expect to lose that amount every week but am very pleased with 3lbs.

Daisychainsandlaughs · 04/01/2021 18:22

@Bookaholic73 I had a Cavalier. He could walk for miles. I would love another. My current dog is a French Bulldog, she is very lazy. When her coat and harness comes out she goes and hides in her bed Smile.

Feeling a bit fed up and the gin bottle is beckoning Gin I can’t see the end to it. We will be fine, both DP and I are retired but this wasn’t the retirement he expected when he finished last Feb. Quite concerned about my children and grandchildren now schools are closed. We are in a childcare bubble for one set. I am not looking forward to trying to homeschool the ten year old. He refused to engage last time and the school were no support. This week he will be left in the care of his sixteen year old sister but it won’t work long term. Hopefully he might get a school place as my daughter is a key worker.
SingToTheSky · 04/01/2021 21:32

Thanks pencils you too ❤️

I am mainly concerned about DD1, she was allowed to attend school after a while in lockdown. DS is home educated anyway so no change there. I don’t think I can work though (self employed tutor) which is sad as I only started a month ago after a few years off!

Lemonyfuckit · 04/01/2021 23:07

Evening everyone,
Hope everyone had a good Monday (first back at work for a lot of people) and then with the lockdown news tonight....good grief. I don't have children yet and I really really feel for everyone trying to juggle childcare/homeschooling with work plus everything the children are missing out on.

In a weird sort of way I feel like this diet and weightloss malarkey is one thing I can at least try and control at the moment when everything else is rather out of control.

Have been rather hungry today but have stuck to my meal plan with no snacking and just by not over eating today my stomach feels a little bit flatter and feel good just for not being completely stuffed like have been all over the Christmas period, face looks less puffy.

I love reading everyone's different approaches - just goes to show one size doesn't fit all, and makes me think this is the right group for me - we all seem to have an idea of what works best for us individually and it's making me feel very motivatedSmile

CosyAcorn · 05/01/2021 07:47

Feeling a bit frustrated with last nights announcement. It just puts teachers in an impossible position with no time to adjust. DD is in reception, so she will be learning from home. I just wish they'd made the decision sooner.

Anyway, like @Lemonyfuckit said, my weightloss is one thing that I can control. No weight change for me since yesterday, which ended up becoming a very bready day (burgers for tea).

Today I dont have much of a plan. I'll have DD to entertain/school and essays to write (I'm a 'mature' student) around that. Just going to make it up as I go along.

Norwester · 05/01/2021 09:36

I see a lot of walking in my dog's future...

SingToTheSky · 05/01/2021 09:41

Totally unmotivated today. Ugh. Hungry, grumpy etc. Back to home ed for DS today - he has been home educated for almost six years anyway and the last year has been better than ever education wise, but I really CBA today 😳 just feeling so stressed not knowing what’s happening, DD1 may be allowed to attend under the vulnerable heading but we aren’t sure yet.

Bookaholic73 · 05/01/2021 10:43

Morning all!

Ugh, I felt so ‘bleh’ about the lockdown announcement last night. I had a glass of wine and some chocolate.

But, only a small amount, and it’s not a big deal. This is why I’m not ‘on a diet’, because if I was, last night I would have ‘fallen off the wagon’ and then quit the whole thing.
Instead, this morning I woke up, threw away the remaining chocolate (I only ate half of what was there last night) and just git over it.

Sending hugs to everyone who needs them re lockdown/education etc. My DS16 missed his GCSE’s last year, and looks like he will miss his AS levels this year (he’s in 6th form) and we are feeling a little frustrated by the whole thing.
Honestly though, I do think the lockdown was needed.

Anyway, I agree with @Lemonyfuckit too, at least the diet is 1 thing I can control. I refuse to exit another lockdown having gained weight!

So I’m off to walk the dogs for an hour this afternoon. I’m really looking forward to my Fitbit arriving, I hope it doesn’t take too long! I’m not convinced that my iPhone tracks my steps correctly.

It’s 10.42 and I haven’t eaten yet. I’m just not hungry, probably because I ate that chocolate last night at about 8pm. So I’ll wait till I’m hungry to have something to eat.

Just about sums today up! Just typed a long post and it's disappeared. I have no car as Vauxhall can't get the part it needs. Need car for work tomorrow but "whatever" we are well.

Lemony I know what you mean March lockdown I lost a stone but when ds went away to uni I put it on again. Now he cant go back gutted for him. BUT I can lose weight already my stomach seems to be a little flatter thanks for positive vibe.

Bookaholic sorry to hear about your ds. My dd has her GCSEs cancelled.

daisy wish you all the best with supporting your grandchildren. So hard for them all.

LightandAiry · 05/01/2021 11:30

I did have a tin of diet coke after feeling very upset post announcement....half with a large brandy....then the other half with a large brandy! 1 Quality Street and 2 After Eights but I don't feel like I've fallen off the wagon as haven't got one to fall off!

peachgreen · 05/01/2021 15:06

Totally agree re "the wagon". I had a mince pie with brandy cream last night after the lockdown announcement and was so glad that I didn't feel guilty afterwards, just knew that it was okay because I'd also had a vegetable stir fry and it's all about balance. Another 0.5kg off this morning although I expect the mince pie will catch up with me tomorrow! Grin

Daisychainsandlaughs · 05/01/2021 22:01

I managed to keep away from the gin last night by going to bed early. I also put all the unopened biscuits and chocolates up in the loft so if I am tempted it is a bit of an effort to get to them. Hopefully people will start to be vaccinated soon and by the time restrictions end we will all be a few pounds less.

Welshgal85 · 05/01/2021 22:16

Can I join? I really need help with motivation for weight loss! Weighed today and have a couple of stone to loose but hopefully on the right track with healthy eating and exercise this week!

I’m tempted to get a Fitbit or something similar, has anyone got any recommendations? Are they worth getting?

ColouringPencils · 05/01/2021 22:20

I felt so stressed last night I couldn't sleep, which didn't make for a good first day back at work and first day of home school today. I missed my steps goal and my yoga, but I am really not going to beat myself up about it. I also had a mince pie (they are gone now though) and some chocolates. Stuck to Dry Jan though, which would usually be the first to go. I do agree it is necessary, I just felt so upset it was so needlessly last minute. Why not just announce on Sunday? As it was, my DS's school had written yesterday afternoon to confirm they were opening, he had got into to bed all prepared to see his friends the next day... I didn't want to ruin his sleep, so I didn't tell him until this morning and then felt like I had lied to him when I put him to bed.
Sorry for those older kids who have missed or will miss big exams and uni, what a tough time they have had.
