Is anyone planning on losing weight in 2021, but without following any specific diet?

I’ve tried low carb, plant based, GI diets, sugar free...the list goes on.

But i know that for me, I just need to eat better and move more. I can’t imagine the rest of my life without rice/chocolate etc, and if my weightloss is going to be sustainable, it can’t exclude any food groups.

So my plan is to just eat less unhealthy foods, and eat more veggies.
I’m starting today, but am aware that others may want to wait till new year, that’s fine.

Anyone else want to join me?

Morning everyone! I think a Friday round up weigh in is a good idea, but I also need to weigh myself daily because it helps keeps me on track.

Although my scales have confused me this morning by saying I'm 10st14. Confused Aren't there 14 pounds in a stone? So that should be 11st right?

DH also brought out all the snacks last night. I had just one strawberry creme and resisted everything else.

I had a bad headache yesterday and a really sore eyelid. Feel like someone punched me in the face, so apart from a little walk about the park I didn't do much exercise. Just went to bed early. The plan is to take DD sledging this afternoon so that will be enough exercise for today.

Lemonyfuckit · 03/01/2021 09:17

Morning all,
Friday weigh in works for me, it's when I tend to do it anyway. I desperately desperately need to start my diet (although still starting properly tomorrow as we've got a bit of wine in the fridge that needs using up) as I always overindulge at Christmas and it seems (to me) not that noticeable for several weeks until suddenly - BAM - it's really noticeable, and now I feel like I've got my Christmas double chin / fat face on and my tummy feels like a barrel.

Daisychainsandlaughs · 03/01/2021 13:08

Hi. I’d love to join in. I weighed myself last Monday and was 13 3. I am 5 ft 2 in and could do with losing at least three stone. I can’t blame it all on lockdown as Mfp shows I was 13 7 last May. I lost 3 pounds then gave up. From last Monday I have reduced my food intake and from 1 Jan I am tracking on mfp and doing dry January. I will weigh tomorrow to hopefully see a loss. I don’t lose weight quickly so will be happy with a pound a week.

Bookaholic73 · 03/01/2021 13:10

Finally got out and did some exercise! Walked the dogs for an hour and 15mins, resulting in 7200 steps.
Pleased with that as a starting point.

Just about to have some lunch. Would love a sandwich, but staying strong with the no bread rule, so having a salad instead. Doing a VERY relaxed version of low carb, in fact I shouldn’t even call it ‘low carb’.

Basically I’m reducing carbs, but allowing myself to have sushi occasionally, because life isn’t worth living without sushi. It’s my 1 true love (sorry DH).
I’m also not counting carbs in veggies, as I love veggies and there is no diet in the world that can tell me ANY veggies are ‘unhealthy’.

I don’t really eat pasta that often, so not a problem there. Same with potatoes.

Anyway, just updating you all on what I’ll be doing diet wise.
I’m really looking forward to getting my Fitbit next week.

@CosyAcorn that’s confused me too. Yes, there’s definitely 14lbs in a stone!

Bookaholic73 · 03/01/2021 13:12

Morning @Daisychainsandlaughs, welcome!
I’m aiming for about 1lb a week, maybe 2lbs if I’m lucky! That’s the recommendation for long term sustainable weight loss, so I’m happy with that.

SingToTheSky · 03/01/2021 14:00

Lazy day here so far and lunch wasn’t good (using up freezer stuff) but I had porridge with nuts for breakfast and I’m doing well with drinking water. I actually ended up fasting 16h because I had some studying to do so I sat in bed and did that before getting up to eat.

Cosy I’d love to see a kingfisher IRL!

One thing I want to do is get into the habit of “earning my breakfast” - I found to my shock before that I actually could do a bit of exercise before breaking my fast. I definitely need to get fitter again before attempting that though.

Vinosaurus · 03/01/2021 14:30

I'm with you in not wanting to remove any food groups entirely. I've decided to do a modified fast 800 - so 800 for 4 days and normal (but not going OTT) for 4. Hopefully that, plus the rowing machine I'm currently awaiting delivery of, will result in gradual and sustainable weight loss.

SingToTheSky · 03/01/2021 16:29

Ooh exciting about the rowing machine! I can only do a few minutes at a time on those 😳

Just had a gentle walk in the park with DS (it’s hard to walk fast when also catching Pokémon!) - glad to get out of the house.

I’ve done well on the Time aim so far today, I am hungry now as my lunch was carby and not filling but can I last till dinner 🤔

ChippyTea16 · 03/01/2021 17:14

Hi all, after a very fun nye drinking far too much and eating loads my hangover has cleared enough to update with my stats and goals!

Last March at the start of lockdown I was 92kg. I got down to 82kg at one point then put 3kg back on in dec (which I’m absolutely fine with, had a great holiday and Xmas period and I’m not in the uk so not as many restrictions). So last week I started Insanity Max30 and have done week 1 so tomorrow is the start of week 2.

My problem is 100% food, I have no issue doing exercise (and def no excuse not to do it due to working from home etc) so I want to just try and be more mindful with eating but still enjoy treats and not cut anything out. Basically do enough consistent exercise to not feel guilty if I want a pizza on a Saturday night!

I signed up to Beachbody on demand so planning to do insanity, then another program till I get to my goal weight.

I’m also training for a cycling challenge in may which I hope will keep me on track and being lighter will definitely make it easier for me.

So my plan is to do the at home workouts plus weekend cycling and trying to go for walks to get my steps in and having Sundays completely off as a rest day.

Tracking my food last year definitely helped especially knowing I’d burned more cals than I’d eaten but I’m not ready to do that just yet. But my aim would also be to get back to tracking.

SW: 92kg
CW: 85kg
GW: 65kg by May

Good luck everyone!

Bookaholic73 · 03/01/2021 17:51

@SingToTheSky when I used to workout (and I will again!) I always used to it first thing in the morning before eating. I found that I had loads more energy compared to working out after eating. Plus, you don’t need to worry about eating to soon before a workout. In fact, I’m planning on doing a YouTube workout tomorrow morning, so you’ve reminded me to do that. Thanks!
Did you manage to wait til dinner?

@Vinosaurus yes that sounds sensible. I think I’d eat my right arm after only having had 800 cals though! Do you get used to it after a while?
Rowing machines kill me, well done for getting one!

@ChippyTea16 your attitude to losing the weight sounds similar to mine. If I choose to have a pizza at the weekend, I’m fine with that. I don’t consider it ‘falling off the wagon’ I just eat it, enjoy it and move on. As long as I’m not doing it regularly, it’s all good.

So had a lovely dinner, lots of veggies and some chorizo, all stir fried in a little sesame oil. Added some olives and half an avocado on the side, to make sure I’m getting enough fat.
I think I’ll reduce the fat next time though. But it was still good.

OP posts:
ChippyTea16 · 03/01/2021 18:12

Exactly @Bookaholic73 there’s no more ‘falling off the wagon’ for me, nothing is banned. I might do a 2 week kick start every now and again but long term I refuse to ban anything. I really don’t want to look back on my life when I’m 80 and realise I spent most of it miserable by depriving myself!

Your tea sounds delicious too!

SingToTheSky · 03/01/2021 18:21

Mmm chorizo and avocado 😍 I have some spicy smashed avocado that I’ll probably eat tomorrow.

I did manage to wait till dinner, DH did it quite early but that’s ok as we’ve already eaten and I’ve just set my timer again. I’d forgotten how much of a relief it is actually, to just eliminate food from the rest of the evening. It’s easier than thinking about what I can eat, whether I should or not etc.

Bookaholic73 · 03/01/2021 18:34

@SingToTheSky that’s how I feel about evening snacks too. Now I’ve cut them out, there is no thinking about them, about what I’ll choose etc.
Now I know that if I am desperate for a snack, I’ll have 1 piece of fruit (an apple) and that’s it.

I did all of my meal prep today, so everything is chopped and ready for the weeks meals.

I really need to start thinking of some breakfasts though, as toast is my ‘go to’.

Eggs are too rich in the morning, and porridge makes me fall asleep.

Any ideas? Preferably low carb.

Spanielmadness · 03/01/2021 18:49

Walked 10 miles yesterday and 12 today. Walked with a friend so seemed very easy and felt like it was done quickly. Eating hadn’t been fab but only had 2 meals each day, with the breakfasts being low cal, so I’m happy with that. Diet starts in earnest tomorrow.....,.,,

Spanielmadness · 03/01/2021 18:50

Apple and full fat yoghurt is a good, filling breakfast.

Bookaholic73 · 03/01/2021 18:53

Wow @Spanielmadness those miles are really impressive!
I prefer to save savoury breakfasts really, but that sounds like a lovely dessert. Thanks!

Vinosaurus · 03/01/2021 19:10

@Bookaholic73 I've done the 5/2 for about 6 months before (ended up giving up mid way through lockdown number 1). It was actually fine for the 2 days I was on 500 calories - got into a routine of what to make and knowing that for the rest of the week was normal was a huge help. So I'm hoping 800 calories will feel like luxury!

Bookaholic73 · 04/01/2021 06:55

Morning All.
Really impressed with myself already, as I got up at 6am and walked the dogs for half an hour. Made a deal with DH last night that I would do the morning walks if he did the evening ones. But think I’ll join in with the evening one too.

I know it sounds impossible, but I’m already seeing a difference in my stomach. It’s definitely less puffy.
Eating less bread always has the same effect, I notice it within a few days. Makes me much less bloated and gassy (TMI, sorry).
It’s not something anyone else would be able to notice if they looked at me, but I definitely do.

CosyAcorn · 04/01/2021 07:56

Morning everyone, hope Monday morning is kind to everyone.

Morning weigh in was: 10st12. It's encouraging to see the numbers drop fairly quickly but I always do that at first and then I have to work hard to lose 1lb per week. Cutting out breakfast, coke and evening snacks make a big difference. Plus we were outside walking and sledging for 2 hours yesterday.

I'm trying to cut down on bread too, which is hard because I love toast! I also don't want to cut out any food permanently. In fact I just had half a bagel with peanut butter because DD wanted bagel for breakfast but will only eat half. Didn't want to waste the food!Grin

LightandAiry · 04/01/2021 08:08

Morning Smile

Bookaholic That's great you're noticing a change, first place I notice is on my waist, it could be my imagination but I think it's looking a little more defined. What sort of dogs do you have?

Spanielmadness great distances. How long did the 12 miles take you?

Dogs that need a lot of exercise are good - I just have a tabby cat she follows me up the road! Also my 15 year old dd came with me yesterday, we walked for around an hour; she is young and fit and I had to put a pace on to keep up with her!

I cut right down on the roast potatoes for dinner, I love them and easy to pile my plate but yesterday had more sprouts and brocolli. Then very restrained I had x1 Quality Street and an After Eight, ate them very slowly.

I habe found already I am not even following my own plan! Not done my food diary, no hope of a diet but moderation and moving more will do it!

LightandAiry · 04/01/2021 08:12

CosyAcorn I totally agree it's a good idea to cut down but not cut anything out. The snow in your area sounds fun.

ApolloandDaphne · 04/01/2021 08:50

I have managed to drop 3 lb in 3 days just by stopping drinking and eating healthy meals/little crap. I know this will slow down but it is a good boost right now when I need it.

SingToTheSky · 04/01/2021 09:47

Another half hour and I’ll have done 16h again. Quite hungry but am listening to an audiobook.

DD1 heard me snoring last night. I’d stopped most of this year - it’s fairly clear that for me it’s weight related :(

Daisychainsandlaughs · 04/01/2021 10:02

Morning all. I have weighed this morning and was pleased to find I had lost 3 lb. I weighed last Monday at 13.2 and from Mon to Thurs I cut down but still ate a small amount of chocolate, biscuits and drank alcohol. From Friday I have calorie counted averaging around 1200 calories, No alcohol and short walks. Planning some longer walks depending on the weather but I seem to have a dog who doesn’t like going for a walk Grin

peachgreen · 04/01/2021 10:17

Morning all. I'm exactly 2st down today since October and I'm very pleased that I managed to maintain over Christmas and then start losing again. Aiming for another good day. I'm finding 16:8 really doable (although I don't stick to it religiously, I have coffee with milk some mornings but just try to only eat between 1-9pm and leave it as late as possible to break the fast).
