Is anyone planning on losing weight in 2021, but without following any specific diet?

I’ve tried low carb, plant based, GI diets, sugar free...the list goes on.

But i know that for me, I just need to eat better and move more. I can’t imagine the rest of my life without rice/chocolate etc, and if my weightloss is going to be sustainable, it can’t exclude any food groups.

So my plan is to just eat less unhealthy foods, and eat more veggies.
I’m starting today, but am aware that others may want to wait till new year, that’s fine.

Anyone else want to join me?

Hi Nuffaluff that sounds like a good plan I've lost weight quickly before but it's gone back on again!

Bookaholic I didn't know serious hikers had preferences for brands...anything waterproof and comfortable for me! Got my boots in Millets.

We used to walk long distances, car shuffle and stay in pub overnight before having dc...miss those days!

Bookaholic73 · 28/12/2020 15:54

@Nuffaluff

I would love to join, thanks. I need to lose 7lb, would like to lose a little more than that. I want to lose weight sloooooowly. I’d love to be 10 stone by the end of February, losing about a lb a week. I’m going to start on January 1st.
Hiya, welcome! Slow and steady definitely wins the race. I’m aiming to lose 2lbs a week to help me lose 3st in total, although I’ll be happy with 2st, depending on what my set weight is once I reach it.

Oh I presumed they’d have super expensive gear Grin

Another one here who's aiming to lose around 3st once the Christmas goodies have all been eaten probably by me Grin

Realistically I will probably start around Jan 4th, it would be earlier but DP will still be on holiday and faffing around getting under my feet so it'll be easier once he's back at work. The DC are due back at school around the same time, but who knows about that...

I used to really enjoy walking/ hiking - did the Moonwalk and other long distance events - but it's just not practical at the moment with small DC. I got some lovely new walking shoes for Christmas, they were actually recommended on here, but they just aren't very comfy Sad

I definitely need to eat less and move more, and regain some joie de vivre in general!!

SingToTheSky · 28/12/2020 21:36

Thank you for the welcome!
I am sad the gym is shut as I enjoyed that and yoga. I just need to get back into doing more active stuff at home. I’m loving the ringfit game on the switch, will do a bit shortly I think.

Finding it hard not to snack though!

Hey clara :o

Coconuttygirl · 28/12/2020 21:47

Hi!
Would you mind if I joined in too please? I am 10 stone 7 and need to lose a stone. Been eating way too much this year! I do a lot of walking but not hiking!!!

Glitterbubbles · 28/12/2020 22:09

Please can I join too - from Jan 1st! I am just in the overweight BMI range for the first time ever and want to lose about 13-15kg by my wedding in the summer. Sounds like a lot but I have put on 10kg in the last 3 years so relatively quickly. Need to lose that and a little more!
I have no control over myself when it comes to chocolate so I'm putting my Christmas chocolate away in a box and letting myself have a little every week. Other than that we plan to eat more healthily and I've rejoined the gym. Fiancé is wanting to lose even more weight than me so hopefully we can motivate each other!

LightandAiry · 29/12/2020 09:02

Morning all Smile

Clara disappointing about your walking boots. They may get better with thick socks and being worn in? Hope you may manage to get out for short walks, with headphones maybe, that will give you a break from the relentlessness of looking after young dc. My dc are almost 16 and 18.

Singtothesky I have done yoga before, enjoyed it too - are you able to do a class on Zoom?

Coconuttygirl you and me both with the eating too much; I lost 10lb during the first lockdown, then put it all back on again, especially with the big life change of my ds leaving for uni (bit of comfort eating and desk job doesn't help). I am not sure what the difference is between walking and hiking - walking enjoying a pleasant stroll and hiking wading through mud and rain?! Hiking is an acquired taste!

Glitterbubbules that's a great idea re the chocolate, I will need to do that with the Quality Street still on the coffee table. So easy to reach for it.

I am still in festive mode Xmas Grin and had a few biscuits last night from the Fox's selection, the ones the dc didn't want and need using up, so hard with all this Christmas food around. Anyway I am off for a 6 mile walk/hike there and back to a village 3 miles away, but it will be through mud at first and splashing through puddles.

I am looking forward to January 1st when I start

Does anybody jog/run? I used to, but don't enjoy it very much these days. Building up more speed with walking is just as good imo. I may give it another go, but walkers going at a normal pace overtake me these days!

SingToTheSky · 29/12/2020 10:46

I’ve never properly jogged although I tried a little on the treadmill at the gym between lockdowns. I prefer less impact though as I have dodgy joints/muscle pain etc. In the switch game you can run to make the character run in the game (one of the joycons is strapped to your leg) which I found easier than I expected, but that is just very gentle.

I really like yoga with Adrienne on YouTube! I must do more of those, as I can’t afford to add a class (my gym membership which includes classes was paid for the year by my lovely mum ❤️). I find it quite hard to fit in when everyone is home as there’s not much space to myself - I need to sort our room which is a hideous mess as at least I will have a bit of space in there to work out again.

I’ve been learning to bake lately. I know that sounds a bit backwards for weight management but I’m hoping it still helps because I tend to buy cheap cakes/biscuits all the time and they really aren’t as satisfying, so it’s easy to eat much more. Whereas if I can make something to share with the family now and then I don’t feel the need to buy ready made stuff which I can eat without even really realising 😳

Bookaholic73 · 29/12/2020 10:47

Morning All, so great to see more people joining in!

@ClaraTheImpossibleGirl what a shame about the shoes! Maybe they’ll get more comfy once they’re worn in a bit? My DH went back to work today, and it’s so much easier without him around!

@SingToTheSky our local gym is doing lots of zoom classes at the moment, maybe you could look into that for the time being? I used to do a lot of yoga, I’d love to get back on the mat again!

Hi @Coconuttygirl, welcome! I think everyone has eaten too much this year. I’m blaming lockdown!

@Glitterbubbles aw congrats on the wedding! DH and I got married in February. He is also trying to lose weight and get fitter with me. It’s helpful to have someone doing it with me! Good luck!

@LightandAiry wow, that sounds like a lovely walk! I’m off to take the dogs out soon, but that’ll only be for an hour or so. Too much to do today. Our big costal hikes are normally on the weekends at the moment.
I’ve never been into running/jogging, but always wanted to do the C25k program. At 13 stone, I find it hurts when I run, so I’m aiming to do it once I’ve lost a few stones.

Just had breakfast, which was tomato and egg (poached) on toast. Well, actually I had to use a bagel because I burnt the toast!

SingToTheSky · 29/12/2020 11:09

I was inspired to do some yoga! I tried an Adriene video but found this one a bit tricky. I need to keep a playlist of ones I do like on YouTube.

It is also hard to relax into yoga when the DCs are around 🤬 I should have done it earlier really (we are all sleeping late ATM, I’m going with the flow till new year!)

Bookaholic73 · 29/12/2020 11:19

I remember back ‘in the day’ (aka when I was dedicated to fitness), I would get up at 5am before the kids woke up, and do an exercise DVD.
Then, in the evening when they were asleep, I’d do a 90 min yoga video too.

Jeez, I could never do that now! I’m too exhausted for a start! Grin

UkSky · 29/12/2020 11:29

Sounds perfect. Can I join too? Need to lose about 3 stone and want to do it by eating better and more exercise.

Can't run as I have bad knees but will get the bike out and start walking before work again.

Will be properly starting on 4th Jan when I go back to work.

Mamagotskills · 29/12/2020 11:31

I’m in. Loosely following slimming world (is half my plate veg/fruit) and limiting treats. Stating gently now so I don’t put even more on before new year

peachgreen · 29/12/2020 11:34

Can I join in? Not to bring the thread down but I've lost almost 2 stone since my DH died in October and as much as that is a horrible reason to have lost weight, I do feel much better physically for it so I want to carry it on having had such a kickstart. Also I'm very aware that I'm the only parent DD has now so I need to stay as healthy as possible. Similarly I don't want to follow a particular diet although I'm sort of doing 16:8 but not really! Ideally I'd like to lose a further 4 stone by 2022 as that would take me to my lightest adult weight where I felt really good about myself and had energy.

Doing okay so far today, resisted a biscuit with my coffee and am heading out for a walk with my toddler now.

ColouringPencils · 29/12/2020 11:41

Just the thread I was looking for! Please can I join you. I am also done with specific diets and the yo-yo effect, I know what foods are healthy and that I am very good at sabotaging my own weight loss. I am not going to measure weight loss this time, want to feel healthier and feel more relaxed. I have just 'set an intention' for myself for January and I am calling it WAVY (I felt like giving it a name might help me achieve it Smile):
Walk 10k steps a day
Alcohol-free
Vegetarian
Yoga practice daily

I also got walking boots for Christmas! Love being outside in nature, I need to do this more, as it makes me feel better in every way.

ColouringPencils · 29/12/2020 11:43

@peachgreen I am so sorry to read about your DH and for my very insensitive post that came directly after, I hadn't seen yours.

TheThreeHeadedBeast · 29/12/2020 11:50

May i join you as well, but will probably start on Jan 5th when i go back to work. Would love to lost 3st - only been that weight once at 18 after a strict diet, but would be very happy to lose 2st and then maintain it.

SingToTheSky · 29/12/2020 12:30

Book that was serious dedication! 😱 I am proud enough of myself for fitting in a 15min video or going out for a short walk 😂

Peach so sorry for your loss💐 you are brilliant for using this time to improve your own health. I have also played with 16:8 a bit, just trying to increase the time between dinner and breakfast so I don’t keep spiking my blood sugar. But I’m not good at following one thing religiously hence joining this thread! So it’s more of a “bear it in mind” type thing.

Pencils I love the acronym idea! I’m going to have a think about the key principles for myself and see if I can make a word too 😁 I am setting up my first proper bullet journal for 2021 so it would make a good page for tracking my achievements.

ColouringPencils · 29/12/2020 12:50

@SingToTheSky I use a bullet journal for work and really like it! I haven't put my 'wavy' in it as I wanted it to feel like something nice for me and not work, but I have found a nice little notebook where I can keep track of my progress. Don't think I will measure weight, as I feel like it makes me a bit mad, just whether I have stuck to my intention. Might add a few motivating little messages to myself too Smile

queentsumtsum · 29/12/2020 12:52

Hi all, can I join? I seem to have a bit more weight to lose than most of you, I'm currently 14st but should be about 9st for a decent BMI (I'm only 5ft).

I've done most of the diet plans around but just need to eat more veg, less sugary crap and move more. I have bad joints anyway so lots of exercise types aren't really possible especially with being overweight but I can walk. So I've signed up for one of those walk x miles and get a medal. I've committed to walking 35miles in January. I know it doesn't sound much but it's more than I walked in December!! Then I plan to increase my mileage each month.

1lb a week loss to begin with will do me fine. I never lose big the first few weeks unlike lots of people which is a bit disappointing but steady loss is probably the best anyway Grin

UkSky · 29/12/2020 13:07

I am off work until the 4th ands there's nowhere to go so I am freezer diving over the next few days.

I'll be defrosting and making up healthy meals then cooking them in sous vide I got for Christmas last year. They can then go back in the freezer and taken out each evening for dinner the next night. Will have to just cook veg.

UkSky · 29/12/2020 13:09

And healthy soups to take to work instead of sandwiches. Carbs are always my downfall.

SingToTheSky · 29/12/2020 13:30

Carb fiend here too. I have learned a lot about blood sugar etc since my last pregnancy (controlled GD with diet) but in reality it’s hard to avoid. One thing I really need to do is make sure I have satisfying meals. If I don’t (which is fairly often due to being disorganised - I am blaming my ADHD - and having to work around the limited diets of my autistic DCs) I just end up snacking. I need to up my protein and I did better on a higher fat diet as well. I really really must make sure I have decent lunches - not even necessarily super healthy, but satisfying/filling. Currently got some home made pulled pork from the freezer and some salad bits from the fridge.

Queen I have about 5 stone to lose. I’m trying not to focus on weight too much and look at the positives (getting fitter/more nutrition etc)

LightandAiry · 29/12/2020 14:49

Nice to see so many of us! I have tried the lot, but need to do my own planning of deciding what to eat then sticking to it, mainly carbs on 1/4 of plate and bigger portion of protein.

Queen I also signed up for a walking challenge - get a T shirt if I do 100K in January. I think that will work out to about 15 miles per week.

Went for my walk - this morning we had big snowflakes falling but it didn't come to much and they stopped after about 10 minutes. Saw robins, wrens, thrushes and sadly some horrible fly tipping and dropped litter Angry need to report the fly tipping to the council.

Also, saw some daffodils pushing themselves up in a grass verge very close to us Daffodil....so lovely to seeSmile spring is on its way!
