Is anyone planning on losing weight in 2021, but without following any specific diet?

I’ve tried low carb, plant based, GI diets, sugar free...the list goes on.

But i know that for me, I just need to eat better and move more. I can’t imagine the rest of my life without rice/chocolate etc, and if my weightloss is going to be sustainable, it can’t exclude any food groups.

So my plan is to just eat less unhealthy foods, and eat more veggies.
I’m starting today, but am aware that others may want to wait till new year, that’s fine.

Anyone else want to join me?

I’m sure you will be fine @ClaraTheImpossibleGirl but with an extra 5 weeks to play with you can relax if you do want to have a few extra treats.
I’m weighing in at 10 stone 12lbs today which is a lb up from fridays weigh in at the minute but I’m hoping to lose it by Friday.
I am liking my new way of setting small targets to aim for. This week it’s to not buy any choc/biscuits after work which so far I have stuck to. I will start adding some exercise goals in from Fridays weigh in. I think I have been self sabotaging by trying to go all out thinking I can make drastic changes straight away and then falling off the diet wagon when I don’t hit them so I am going to re-evaluate and go for smaller more manageable goals. I am going to take my weight loss 3lb at a time so my next target is to reach 10 stone 9lbs.

Today:
B: granola with sliced banana and milk, glass of oj
S: strawberry, grape and blueberry with yogurt
L: ham salad roll
S: fruit split ice lolly
D: fajitas with sweet potato fries

Calories used: 1687
Calories left: 571
Steps: 21045

So a good day today and pretty healthy if you ignore the ice lolly.
How is everyone else getting on?

LeftyLou · 16/06/2021 20:21

@ClaraTheImpossibleGirl

Hope the rest of your day went well *@Wejustdontknow*!

The family wedding I was aiming for has been moved back, so I have an extra 5 weeks to get party frock ready. I've tried the frock on and the additional time may be needed Shock

My family wedding has been postponed too. My brother is now hopefully getting married in September so that gives me a little more breathing space.

Been so happy with the exercise so far this week. Plan on keeping it up as best I can. My weight keeps fluctuating on the scales so definitely going to measure. (If I can find the tape measure)

Really got to get this in hand now!

LeftyLou · 16/06/2021 20:55

@Wejustdontknow that is a fantastic amount of steps. Feel tired just reading that amount Grin plus I am sure ice lollies are a good treat especially in this weather.

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 16/06/2021 22:24

@LeftyLou I buy loads of tape measures. The DC are fascinated by them so they disappear on a regular basis Hmm

Tomorrow is 'sort the fridge out and meal plan' day... DS1 has various food intolerances (and is very fussy in general), DP also has intolerances, DS2 is a pretty good eater but mainly likes plain stodgy food, and I like spicy food which no-one else does. Sigh. No wonder I regularly give up when working out what everyone's going to eat!

Wejustdontknow · 17/06/2021 15:51

Sorry to hear that both the weddings you were going to have been postponed @LeftyLou and @ClaraTheImpossibleGirl hopefully by the time they go ahead they will be able to do so without restrictions 🤞
On my three long days at work I always get lots of steps in as I am pretty much just walking for 9 hours, they won’t be half as high on other days.
I am still succeeding in my challenge to buy no junk food so going strong this week.
Scales are saying 10 stone 10 lb today

Food wise I have had:
B: granola with banana and milk, oj
S: strawberry, grape and blueberrie with yogurt
L: ham salad roll
D: smoked haddock with roast new potatoes, green veg and a drizzle of white sauce

Calories used: 1324
Calories left: 1351 😬
Steps: 23531

I am trying to stay under my calories where possible, according to MFP I can have 1680 per day to lose 1lb a week and this seems pretty accurate but i have previously eaten just because I have calories left, especially on work days when I gain lots from the steps I do so I’m trying to only eat if hungry
I might have dessert tonight which will be a low calorie jelly with mini meringue, berries and cream which comes in around 160 calories if I fancy it later
Hope everyone is having a good week x

I'm really pleased it's under 12 at last, although only just. I really hope it stays there but know my weight can go up and down.

I've eaten ok this last week. I generally try to keep my calories below what my phone says I've used. My phone does well counting steps if I'm walking outside the house but does badly counting energy used if I'm doing something at home like gardening or housework but my phone is at the bottom of a bag.

I haven't done as much exercise as I'd like. I can walk without affecting my ankle but I've decided to wait till I run. Last time I tried, it made it worse. I'm not sure how many weeks I'll have to go back in C25k. The most sensible thing might be to go back to the start.

KihoBebiluPute · 18/06/2021 08:53

Good morning all.

I don't feel like I have had a great week. I have certainly snacked a good deal more than I should have, and have only run 26.7km across the week so much less than usual, and yet my weight is actually down a little. I will count it as a blessing and must be just one of those random fluctuations which in other weeks deliver zero loss when I feel I have done well.

Really pleased to be back under 11st and very much hoping that I can now stay under that level permanently and don't wobble up again any time soon.

Congratulations on your loss @sittinghere - I am guessing there might be a typo in the numbers as a loss of a full stone in a week would be a bit worrying but whatever it is, the same feeling of getting under the next "stone" boundary is brilliant.

Wejustdontknow · 18/06/2021 08:56

Huge well done @sittinghere on your weight loss, you are doing amazing 🤩
When you feel you are ready to try running again you could go back to week one and just do one run for each of the weeks if you find your ankle is ok

I am at work until 2 so will do my weigh in after the school run this afternoon x

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 18/06/2021 10:42

Well done to @sittinghere and @KihoBebiluPute on your losses!!

Yes, I'm hoping the wedding will go ahead ok on the new date @Wejustdontknow. The bride has always dreamed of a big white wedding - just bad luck that she was going to have it in 2020...!

sittinghere · 18/06/2021 12:51

@KihoBebiluPute
Thanks for pointing that out. I deleted 13 pounds from my weight (one day...). Today's proper weigh in is 11 stone 13.75 pounds. Still a loss, but a pound not a stone. Smile

KihoBebiluPute · 18/06/2021 14:29

A pound is still very much well done! A pound in a week is excellent progress but a stone in a week would be terribly unhealthy so I am relieved. Keep it up, though and it won't be too long before you are genuinely at 11st 0.75lb.

Wejustdontknow · 18/06/2021 15:52

Well done everyone 🙂

28/5 no weigh in due to holiday
11/6 10 stone 11lb -1lb
18/06 10 stone 9lb -2lb

I’ve done well this week, stuck to my calories and not bought any extra junk food after work.
My goal for next week is to buy no junk food and to also exercise 3 times through the week. I hit the mini weight target I set so will now aim for the next 3lb and hope to get to 10 stone 6lb over the next couple of weeks.

Today’s food:
B: granola with banana, milk and oj
S: strawberry, blueberry, grape and yogurt
L: ham salad roll
D: cheeseburger and fries (very calorific)

Calories used: 1750
Calories left: 694
Steps: 24560

Hugely calorific dinner later tonight but still well within my limits so might even treat myself later, I was very tempted to buy some chocolate after work but decided if I really want something later I will have a magnum ice cream from the freezer
I am also back with AF again 😞 21 day cycle this time, they are getting shorter and shorter so I have decided I am going to stop taking my pill and see if I have a better natural rhythm but need to speak to dp about alternative birth control first as don’t want to take any risks knowing we definitely don’t want any more children
We are going out for a meal on Sunday for Father’s Day so won’t worry about my diet that day but will try and still make some sensible options 🤞

Wejustdontknow · 20/06/2021 11:47

Morning all, hope everyone is having a lovely weekend. The weather isn’t great here so we haven’t actual done much. Went to a couple of shops and out for a walk yesterday and today we are going out for a meal in a pub for the first time in about a year 🙂
I have stuck to my calories for the past couple of days, I had a packet of giant choc orange buttons delivered on the Friday food shop as my weekend treat but so far I’ve only had 6 which was last night around 9:30 when I got in from work.
I have done my first workout of the week this morning, I couldn’t go for a run as dp was out so did a YouTube hiit workout, was only 10 minutes and according to my watch only burnt 87 calories but it’s a start and if I feel like it I might go for a run later this afternoon.
I’ve had my usual granola with banana for breakfast again and have had a look at the pub menu and have shortlisted the minted lamb shank with mash and veg or grilled salmon with new potatoes and salad, I imagine the lamb will have lots of calories especially with a minted gravy but I won’t worry about that for one meal. as always there isn’t loads of choice for gluten free but they both sound nice so I will just see what I fancy when we get there x

Wejustdontknow · 21/06/2021 14:12

Hello again, I think everyone is busy with life at the minute as the thread has seen a few people leave or maybe just check in less frequently but I do hope those still checking in are doing well and don’t mind my sometimes daily updates.
I have been reading the thread on the weight loss forum called what we eat which is now on to thread two but an interesting read if anyone wants to spend a good chunk of time on mumsnet 😆

Meal out yesterday was a bit of a washout, I ended up going for hunters chicken with jacket potato then a gluten free bakewell tart with vanilla ice cream. The food was ok, nothing special but the service was atrocious. So many wrong orders, food forgotten, incorrect drinks. They actually took 30 minutes from bringing our food to ds8’s so had clearly forgotten his order. We had all finished by the time his arrived and he had to keep snacking from other peoples meals as was hungry so not somewhere I will be going back to in a hurry.
Finished the evening off with my packet of choc orange buttons and wish I hadn’t, they made me feel so bloated and gassy and just weren’t enjoyable. I do think my new way of eating has made me not really want the sugary junk anymore. I wish I had had apple slices with peanut butter or oatcakes with cheese (or both 😆)

Exercise 2 of the week completed this morning with a run straight after the school run

Food:
B: granola with milk and oj
L: chicken/cauliflower biryani with veg
D: Nando’s style chicken strips with sweet potato fries, corn on the cob, giant mushroom stuffed with cheese and garlic and coleslaw - really looking forward to this dinner later 🙂

Calories used: 1671
Calories left: 257
Steps: 9749 not at work today so much less but by the time I’ve done school run and taken ds to karate should be around 11k

Weight still at 10 stone 9lbs but I am expecting to see it maybe go up slightly after Sunday’s food

KihoBebiluPute · 22/06/2021 07:26

Hiya @Wejustdontknow I am still keeping an eye on the thread most days but yes it's certainly quieter at the moment. Since Friday's weigh-in I have had 2 restaurant meals and also AF has arrived so I as expected I am up a little from that weigh-in weight but am hoping I might be back down again by next Friday.

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 22/06/2021 12:35

Isn't it disappointing when a treat lets you down @Wejustdontknow! We went to a Harvester on Sunday - first time in a couple of years - I was disappointed to find out that a salmon fillet is now £16 Shock it came with mash & veg but frankly there's a salad bar, I don't need mash & veg! Plus I wanted the (plain) salmon as it fitted in with my WW plan, except it doesn't any more, it comes in sauce. I went for fish & chips instead (much cheaper!) and tried to eat less...

How is your running going @KihoBebiluPute? I did w5r1 yesterday - I'm trying to run or Shred every day to kick start my very lazy metabolism!

2lb down this week. Yippee! Means I've lost 20lb in total (10% of my starting weight - I love a good statistic!) but still have 30lb to go Sad

KihoBebiluPute · 22/06/2021 18:39

I did my longest run ever today, @ClaraTheImpossibleGirl - 14.5km and according to my garmin I apparently burned over 1000 calories doing so! I would like to use this to justify having some chocolatey pudding tonight. I hope I don't accidentally eat more than 1000 calories worth though.

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 23/06/2021 14:37

That's amazing @KihoBebiluPute!! I was thinking of joining those 'run 1K a day' challenges, give me extra motivation to actually move. However I lost my fitness tracker today so obviously I'm not moving at all whilst it doesn't count Grin

House is upside down at the moment, we have tiling being done, the washing machine isn't working properly and something keeps tripping out all the electrics upstairs Confused I'm not eating particularly well (although I am running or Shredding every day) although I think I'm staying under my calories. The scales will tell me soon, no doubt!

Wejustdontknow · 23/06/2021 16:41

Hi, just a quick check in today. Well done on the run @KihoBebiluPute that’s really good
@ClaraTheImpossibleGirl it sounds like life is a little hectic right now so we’ll done for keeping this up and I hope you find your tracker 🤞

I have stayed on plan, I’ve done my 3 bouts of exercise I wanted to get done on my days off 🙂 back to work today and still planning on not buying any junk, shouldn’t be hard this month as after paying off a holiday I’m pretty skint 😆
Scales showing 10 stone 8lb today so still slowly heading in the right direction

Wejustdontknow · 23/06/2021 17:18

Just wanted to update to say I have sinned but in such a good way 😆
Since I am doing so well I have ordered myself a box of brownies from the simply cake company who make the most amazing brownies and everything is gluten free 🙂 I am thinking rather than eating one every day for a week I will freeze them and have them as a weekly treat when I get to the end of the week without buying junk. Hoping they arrive in time for the weekend now 🤞

KihoBebiluPute · 25/06/2021 07:34

Great progress @Wejustdontknow and the brownies plan sounds excellent. I think its important to include modest amounts of nice chocolatey things in a weight-loss plan because if you cut them out entirely and start just really missing them, it makes falling off the wagon spectacularly so much more of a temptation.

I have been eating quite a lot of cake lately as I have been trying to reorganise the freezer and have found that nearly half the volume of freezer contents is the second halves of batches of cakes that I made, and put half of into the freezer so that I wouldn't eat it all. I am not going to let myself do any more baking until the cake content of the freezer is more reasonable.

I have been doing a bit more running than usual to counteract the extra cake calories - running total for the week 59km

Hope your brownies arrive soon @Wejustdontknow!! I agree with @KihoBebiluPute that it's better to include some treats, otherwise you'll just want them even more Grin I often make some chocolate beetroot cake to have something sweet to nibble on when I need it.

Well done on the running as well Kiho! I did w5r3 today. It is TWENTY MINUTES running in one go Shock I managed to do it very slowly but as I also had to carry the DC's umbrellas and my rain mac, I was pleased to do it at all!

RIP fitness tracker Sad no idea where it is. I've ordered a new one...

Well done everyone for losing this week. I've had a bit of a bad week, so I'm back to the 12s. I think I was subconsciously rewarding myself for getting under 12, which isn't great. Next week is a new week, and I aim to be back on the wagon.

I'm also hoping to start c25k again next week. I've missed it while waiting for my ankle to get better. I'll start again at week 1 so should hopefully be back where I was in 6 weeks.

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 25/06/2021 22:04

DP is out tomorrow night @Wejustdontknow, I may treat myself to a takeaway or an M&S meal Grin

Is your ankle all recovered now @sittinghere? I was bright red after today's run. At least it shows I'm working hard, I suppose!
