Is anyone planning on losing weight in 2021, but without following any specific diet?

I’ve tried low carb, plant based, GI diets, sugar free...the list goes on.

But i know that for me, I just need to eat better and move more. I can’t imagine the rest of my life without rice/chocolate etc, and if my weightloss is going to be sustainable, it can’t exclude any food groups.

So my plan is to just eat less unhealthy foods, and eat more veggies.
I’m starting today, but am aware that others may want to wait till new year, that’s fine.

Anyone else want to join me?

That's great, @SingToTheSky, glad you've got some nice bits in and that you've still managed to lose a couple of lbs despite everything. It must be so difficult and stressful trying to find the meds that are right for you.

@ClaraTheImpossibleGirl I think it was all of the jumping in Joe Wicks that did me in! I've swapped to running now that the pavements have defrosted.

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 22/02/2021 22:18

@SingToTheSky I've heard it's a delicate balance with ADHD meds? Apologies if I've got it wrong; my friend's DS (11) has been on them for a few years and I know that it's a work in progress to get him on the right type, the right dose etc. When they work properly they are brilliant for him, but when something changes and they need to be adjusted, she's had a tough time with him whilst they find the best ones. I'm glad you're feeling better though and a weight loss is always a good motivator!

I'd love to go running again @CosyAcorn but I can only really go once a week at the weekend when DP is around, and it's just not enough for me to make any improvement. Maybe once the schools are back Grin

CosyAcorn · 23/02/2021 09:51

Drat! Gone up a lb this morning. My body seems very determined to stick at 10st5. Or maybe I need to stop baking scones and eating them all!

Yeah, @ClaraTheImpossibleGirl, I'm only getting to run because my mum has my DD three mornings a week when I have classes. I drop her off early so I can squeeze a run in. It's probably bending the rules but I don't think it can do anyone any harm.

Can't wait for schools to be back in, just two more weeks to get through! (Really wish they'd vaccinated all the teachers/school staff though)

Bookaholic73 · 23/02/2021 13:14

Morning All :)

@SingToTheSky I have a friend with ADHD and whenever she switches meds, she has the same symptoms as you.
Be kind to yourself, I'm sure it'll sort itself out soon. Glad that you managed to find you'd lost despite those challenges, well done.

@CosyAcorn this thread helps me stay on track too. I really should turn work off at 5pm instead of catching up with emails till 9pm and then being too tired to do anything else.

Re the bras, i have a shock absorber, but i HATE it! It feels like my boobs are being squished within an inch of their lives! However, i paid £40 for it, so i am going to use it regardless! Probably not a great idea, but I'm not buying another!

I'm really finding the food thing to be easier now that I'm meal prepping, but the wine still calls me most evenings. I'm having a few glasses every 3 or 4 evenings. But not too bad.

As usual, i need to increase my exercise. If any of you have a fitbit, let me know if you want to be 'friends' on there.

Bookaholic73 · 23/02/2021 13:15

@CosyAcorn i am looking forward to the schools going back too, I'll be able to be much more active during the day. I'll still WFH but I'll take an hours break every lunch time.

SingToTheSky · 23/02/2021 13:27

Thanks book :) it’s nice to know it’s a common thing. It’s so frustrating as the anxiety was blocking any gain in focus etc. You’re right clara it’s a tricky balance!

I got a shielding letter today 🤦🏽‍♀️ Due to history of GD in pregnancy. It did mean I could book my jab for Saturday yay! And apparently I can still go for walks. But possibly not do the nursery run 🤔 it’s confusing.

Bookaholic73 · 23/02/2021 13:31

@SingToTheSky that is really confusing..but great to hear you can have the jab!

Morning All :)

Ah, i caved in and had fish & chips last night...but only ate about half of it, so i guess that's better than eating the whole thing.

In my defense, i came on my period this morning, so maybe that's why I was so ravenous yesterday.

I was planning an hours walk today, but I feel so gross and bloated, I'm not sure I'll bother. I know I'll probably feel so much better afterwards though...someone needs to kick me up the bum!

CosyAcorn · 24/02/2021 10:18

Morning everyone. After complaining yesterday that I am stuck at 10st5, this morning I dropped down to 10st2. So that was a lovely surprise to start my day.

@Bookaholic73 I'm so impressed that you only ate half of your fish n chips! I could really fancy that too, might get that as a Friday treat.

I know what you mean about schools going back. It's hard to be active when your five year old wants you to sit and colour with her.

KihoBebiluPute · 24/02/2021 10:33

I had a pretty good weekend with sensible eating and reasonable exercise, then did a quick weigh on Monday to check I was on track and found I had actually lost rather more than would be "target" since the Friday weigh in - and felt it might be unhealthy to keep losing quite that sharply so I had a more relaxed (probably too far the other way) monday and tuesday (no runs, drank a G&T, ate some crisps, had some bread and butter instead of ryvita crackers with my lunch!) and I have put some weight on again the last 2 days. Will try to find a sensible middle ground today and tomorrow to try to balance between these two. I am currently dressed for a run on my lower half and still in pyjamas for my upper half as I try to get out for a run but have been doing a bit of work that needed doing first... That's finished now and I am just on Mumsnet procrastinating instead of going out and running.

CosyAcorn · 25/02/2021 08:19

@KihoBebiluPute I've just done the exact same as you. Dropped 3lbs unexpectedly yesterday and then celebrated with treats yesterday. Now this morning 2lbs have returned. 🙃

Ah well, I like to picture my weight as a red ball drifting down in water, it bobs up and down as it goes but as long as the overall trend is downwards then I'm on the right track.

Bookaholic73 · 25/02/2021 16:48

Afternoon everyone!

I took myself out for a long walk today, as it’s so sunny and lovely. I did 13k steps and my legs are sore..but I really enjoyed it too. I have been so busy that I’ve not eaten yet today, so I’ve got dinner on now. I’m starving.

@CosyAcorn the only reason I ate half was because I didn’t like it very much. The batter was soggy and the chips weren’t as crispy as I’d like either.
I think it’s great that you’re imagining your weight loss is like a ball bobbing up and down, it’s so true isn’t it!

@KihoBebiluPute did you get out on your run? Once I’ve lost some of the weight at reached 10st, I plan to start running. I M too heavy at the moment, it’s painful to run.

OP posts:
KihoBebiluPute · 25/02/2021 18:46

I am lying on the sofa too tired to move at the moment but yes I managed my run yesterday, and today too, and then had a bit of a low-blood-sugar meltdown when I was required for a home-schooling IT problem whilst trying to sort out my lunch post-run, and have had a bit of a low-achievement afternoon.

I really like the ball bobbing up and down imagery too - it's the overall trend, not the day to day speed. (sometimes I think the ball washes up into a side-channel for a few days or gets caught in a patch of water-weeds)

I started running once I was no longer "obese" (around 12st 12lb) - I had been thinking about it for a while but didn't want to damage my knees as a friend of mine did. Very well cushionned trainers, and plenty of warmup and warmdown stretching and strength training have been important to make sure I don't do myself an injury. I've been fine so far - I did have some odd pains at first but I had a private physio appointment to check what was happening and she gave me some further stretching exercises to do. If it's currently painful to run it's unlikely to be solely due to your current weight but likely to be something a physiotherapist can help you to identify and resolve with the right regime of exercises etc.

KihoBebiluPute · 26/02/2021 06:47

Friday weigh-in

8th Jan 77.6kg (12st 3lb)
15th Jan 76.5kg (12st 0.5lb)
22nd Jan 76.5kg (12st 0.5lb)
29th Jan 76.2kg (12st 0lb)
5th Feb 75.1kg (11st 11.5lb)
12th Feb 74.9kg (11st 11lb)
19th Feb 74.5kg (11st 10.25lb)
26th Feb 73.6kg (11st 8.25lb)

Very pleased to have managed 2lb loss this week, making it about 9lb down in 7 weeks which seems perfectly reasonable progress.

Exercise this week - 4 runs totalling 35km, 2 walks totalling 8km.

Happy friday everybody.

CosyAcorn · 26/02/2021 08:41

1st Jan: 11st1
8th Jan: 10st10
15th Jan: 10st9
22nd Jan: 10st8
29th Jan: 10st5
5th Feb: 10st5
12th Feb: 10st4
19th Feb: 10st5
26th Feb: 10st4

1lb loss this week, 11lbs lost overall. Looks like I've spent all of February trying to lose 1 pound. But 11lbs overall feels good.

Although my numbers haven't changed that much this month, I am enjoying other changes. I'm running nearly every day and feel really energised afterwards, and I think my face is looking a bit slimmer which is nice to see too.

Bookaholic73 · 26/02/2021 20:19

Well done @KihoBebiluPute and @CosyAcorn on your losses!

I forgot to weigh today, so I’ll do it in the morning. I do it first thing in the morning before eating.

I can tell it’s my time of the month, I’m starving 24/7!

OP posts:
ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 26/02/2021 22:51

Well done @KihoBebiluPute and @CosyAcorn!

Had an interim weigh in today (usually weigh in on Mondays) and have lost about a pound - which is fine, at least it's going in the right direction. Just need to keep my motivation up over the weekend now...!

CosyAcorn · 27/02/2021 10:08

I find weekends hard too, @ClaraTheImpossibleGirl

I really need to catch up on work stuff today. Which means being glued to my laptop. So I've pushed myself to get moving early and I've just been for a run.

I also had a bagle with nutella for breakfast...so a mixture of lax and discipline this morning 😁

KihoBebiluPute · 27/02/2021 10:59

Is there a "most terrible pun of the thread" prize competition that no one mentioned?

Bookaholic73 · 27/02/2021 15:47

I’ve weighed myself, but I’ve GAINED 2lbs??? I have no idea how I gained that much in a week.

I’m putting it down to being on my period, bloody hormones Sad

Went out for a walk at the beach again today. And for my 10k steps in.

OP posts:
Bookaholic73 · 27/02/2021 15:47

@KihoBebiluPute what do you mean?

OP posts:
KihoBebiluPute · 27/02/2021 22:24

@Bookaholic73 "lax and discipline" is a terrible pun. But maybe you had to be there.

KihoBebiluPute · 27/02/2021 22:27

Actually no. thinking about it I think I misunderstood and actually no it's not. Pretend my last two posts aren't there. Sorry everyone. As you were.

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 27/02/2021 22:29

AF always gets me too @Bookaholic73 Sad although I do also tend to eat a mountain of chocolate at that time

How lovely to live near a beach! We are at least 45 minutes' drive from any, can't really justify a trip there at the moment despite the DC's pleading. I've done 12K today but that's rare for me at the moment, unfortunately.

How did the rest of your day go @CosyAcorn? Today has been ok - bit more rubbish eaten than was ideal, but nowhere near as bad as I used to be. Bought myself a lovely loaf of bread earlier for my lunch (a sandwich), DP 'saved' me from eating the rest of it by scoffing the lot Hmm

CosyAcorn · 28/02/2021 08:54

Ha ha @KihoBebiluPute you had me scratching my head with that one. 😁 I wasn't writing very clearly in that post.

AF does the same to me too @Bookaholic73

How cheeky of your DH @ClaraTheImpossibleGirl!

Well, I was very active for the rest of yesterday but then had a chinese takeaway , and then a glass of wine. Tasted delicious!

Still managed to maintain 10st4 this morning though. It's frosty today so I'm not going for a run. But will do some gardening later on and try to keep moving.
