Is anyone planning on losing weight in 2021, but without following any specific diet?

I’ve tried low carb, plant based, GI diets, sugar free...the list goes on.

But i know that for me, I just need to eat better and move more. I can’t imagine the rest of my life without rice/chocolate etc, and if my weightloss is going to be sustainable, it can’t exclude any food groups.

So my plan is to just eat less unhealthy foods, and eat more veggies.
I’m starting today, but am aware that others may want to wait till new year, that’s fine.

Anyone else want to join me?

Managed to loser another lb this week, but have had a completely shit day so just want to comfort eat. Luckily all my chocolate is at work, but the snacks cupboard is calling as is the beer, gin and wine.

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 06/02/2021 22:36

@KihoBebiluPute the chocolate did appeal Grin I ate more than I would have otherwise (not helped by also taking medication which I had to take with food!) but I've been active every day, more walking than usual today too.

@CosyAcorn I really need some new sports stuff too but am hoping that Sainsburys do their 25% off Tu clothing next week - I saw some bits in store which I'd like but decided to hold off for now. As I'm planning to lose 3 stone I don't want to spend vast amounts on branded stuff - I have some Nike and Adidas that's lasted me years, but Sainsburys would do fine for now!

KihoBebiluPute · 07/02/2021 08:06

I have successfully managed to avoid another pizza blowout as per 3 weekends ago. We had another family boardgames and pizza night and I managed to just eat my modest ration of pizza (I cut my slices much smaller to make them last longer) and just the salad didn't touch any other side dish treats. 2 glasses of wine rather than one and then being a little merry I did have a tiny bit of dessert that I probably shouldn't have. The scales show me as a 0.2kg lighter than on Friday so that seems to be a "safe" level of a nice evenings' treats. Trying to drag myself out for a run this morning as the weather forecasts suggest it might not be good running weather for a few days after today but my duvet is so so nice. I think I was half hoping that the scales would tell me I had put on weight yesterday as that would have spurred me into getting my running things on and getting out of the front door rather than coming back to bed!

CosyAcorn · 07/02/2021 08:37

Well done @KihoBebiluPute, excellent management of a treat night. I had a similar challenge yesterday. DH and DD made a huge plate of pancakes for breakfast and I couldn't resist having a couple with chocolate spread and peanutbutter with banana. (My favourite!) I did a workout later in the day so today I managed to maintain.

I've been hovering on the same place on the scales for days now so I'd really like to see a drop tomorrow. I've got vegetable soup lined up for lunch and salmon for tea. Going to go for a walk this afternoon too. Hopefully I will see a change soon 🤞

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 08/02/2021 08:35

I think that was a great way to enjoy your pizza night without (so much of!) the guilt, @KihoBebiluPute! I went for a short run yesterday morning - a week 3 one of C25K - foolishly thinking I'd warm up once I got going Confused clearly I forgot that my normal running speed (think: tortoise carrying heavy shopping) doesn't get me that warm...

Pancake Day next week as well @CosyAcorn!! But it sounds like you balanced your yummy pancakes out with healthy eating and a walk?

Half a pound off for me this week; not great but ok considering that it was AF week and I ate more chocolate than I should have! I've set a mini goal of half a stone off by the time the DC go back to school. Currently March 8th but frankly, who knows at this rate?!

CosyAcorn · 09/02/2021 07:18

@ClaraTheImpossibleGirl you and I have the same running speed! And even if I can warm up most of my body with running, I can't warm up my face!

After about 10 days at 10st5, I finally dropped to 10st4 this morning. Wahoo! One step closer to fitting in my little black dress!.

KihoBebiluPute · 09/02/2021 07:42

Yay! Well done @CosyAcorn - one step at a time we will get there.

Bookaholic73 · 10/02/2021 11:27

Morning All.

Sorry I’ve been MIA, work has been so busy! I said that last time, so I’ll just shut up now.

I’ve lost another pound, so I’ve now gone from 12.12 down to 12.8!
Slow and steady is the way forward for me.

I’ve been increasing the water and veg intake, and reducing the chocolate and wine it seems to be working, and I feel good physically and mentally.

I’ve been hitting at least 8k steps most days, with some 12k and 10k days too.

@CosyAcorn wow, your weightloss is so impressive! 10lbs! Well done.

@KihoBebiluPute well done with the pizza night!

1lb lost this week, 11lbs overall.

We're having our first takeaway of the year tonight for Chinese New Year and are having a bit of a luxury (for us) meal on Sunday for Valentine's day: steak, bottle of red and a chocolate dome pudding.

So this weekend is going to be a relaxed one with the weight loss. But I dont mind that, I'm ready for a few treats.

Managed to go for a little run this week and that felt really good, hopefully will get more of those in as the days get brighter.

Hope everyone is ok and keeping their sanity!

KihoBebiluPute · 12/02/2021 09:22

Well done @CosyAcorn

Well after being smugly pleased with myself on Monday for having done well at the pizza night last Saturday, the scales have stayed stubbornly fixed since then. I expect this is due to having been a bit more relaxed with snacks on days when I went for a longer run, I haven't been counting the calories very religiously this week.

8th Jan 77.6kg (12st 3lb)
15th Jan 76.5kg (12st 0.5lb)
22nd Jan 76.5kg (12st 0.5lb)
29th Jan 76.2kg (12st 0lb)
5th Feb 75.1kg (11st 11.5lb)
12th Feb 74.9kg (11st 11lb)

so a bit disappointed not to have done better, but half a pound isn't too bad.

I have likewise got a special Valentines meal coming up on Sunday. We have ordered a special meal from Cote at Home. There is to be Truffled Brie involved. I think I should try to do a couple of pre-emptive 10km runs before Sunday evening to get a head start on the inevitable overload. But I suspect I won't be reporting anything less than 74.9kg this time next week and will have to work quite hard to ensure it isn't any more!

Exercise in the past week - 4 runs totalling 35.5km, 1 walk of 4km.

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 12/02/2021 15:32

Well done on another 1lb loss @CosyAcorn!

Hope the pre-emptive runs go well @KihoBebiluPute; I took the DC for a short walk today but it was freezing cold even in all our layers! Hopefully it will be a bit warmer by Sunday, which is the only day I'll get chance to go for a run without them.

I did a quick weights workout this morning, the DC had a class Zoom call so I'll save PE with Joe till tomorrow. I didn't want to risk appearing in the background in my gym gear and traumatise the children Grin

KihoBebiluPute · 19/02/2021 07:48

Is this thread still useful enough for enough people for it to be worth to keep it going? We could find a more active thread to join if this one has outlived its usefulness?

The truffled brie on valentine's night was absolutely amazing and I ate about 100g of it (with some pear chutney) after a 3 course Côte at Home meal and yes I had gone up in weight by Monday morning despite those pre-emptive runs. But I have been pretty good since, and done even more running, and am back down again now.

8th Jan 77.6kg (12st 3lb)
15th Jan 76.5kg (12st 0.5lb)
22nd Jan 76.5kg (12st 0.5lb)
29th Jan 76.2kg (12st 0lb)
5th Feb 75.1kg (11st 11.5lb)
12th Feb 74.9kg (11st 11lb)
19th Feb 74.5kg (11st 10.25lb)

So not quite hitting the 1lb a week target but not bad considering the over-indulgence.

Exercise in last 7 days - 5 runs totalling 42km

Hope everyone else is doing ok. The better weather is certainly helping improve my general mood and positivity and making it easier to be motivated to get out of the house for exercise.

1lb gain this week, 10lbs lost overall

Bad week for me. Time of the month, my bra malfunctioned and shredded my boobs when I went for a run so I'm going to have to get a proper sports bra now. Any recommendations of where to look?

Also had a lot of treat days in the last week: take away for Chinese New Years, steak for Valentine's, and then pancake day.

So not surprisingly I gained this week. But today is a new day, so going to get back into my good habits. My next goal is to try and hit 10st3.

CosyAcorn · 19/02/2021 07:51

Well done @KihoBebiluPute!

KihoBebiluPute · 19/02/2021 08:10

Smile time-of-the-month weigh ins don't count @CosyAcorn you'll be back on track soon.

I recommend this bra from M&S which I have bought twice after I shrunk too small for the first one I bought and started wobbling around too much so went down a couple of cup sizes. I did also have a panache bra that I got from bravissimo but that wasn't as good tbh and I didn't bother replacing it when it got too big for me.

TheThreeHeadedBeast · 20/02/2021 13:27

22nd Jan - 10st 13lb
27th Jan - 10st 12lb

5th Feb - 10st 10lb
11th Feb - 10st 9lb
19th Feb - 10st 7lb
9lb in 7 weeks.
It's slow and not dramatic, but i am finding it relatively easy to stick to. Also realised this morning that the waistband of my jeans doesn't dig in anymore!!!
Well done to everyone else on their progress, slow and steady wins the race.

CosyAcorn · 20/02/2021 18:09

Well done @TheThreeHeadedBeast!

Thank you, @KihoBebiluPute, that bra looks good. Now need to measure myself, and find out what size I need.

I've got a run in today, but I feel like my portions may have been a bit big today! I'm going to try and check in on this thread more often because it helps me to stay focused.

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 20/02/2021 20:56

Well done @TheThreeHeadedBeast! And @KihoBebiluPute I'm impressed by your running!! We actually had some sunshine here today and it would have been a lovely day for a run, but DP decided that he needed to 'do some jobs round the house' (aka: chatting with the neighbour for hours over the fence) so there was no-one to look after the DC Sad

@CosyAcorn my sports bras are in a terrible state Blush I keep thinking I'll buy a new one, then think I'd better wait till I've lost a bit of weight because they won't fit for long, then I don't lose the weight and try to encourage myself to lose more exercise but I need a new bra and... can you see where this is going?!

I have had a terrible couple of days!! Someone point me towards the weight loss wagon, I need to get back on it!

SingToTheSky · 20/02/2021 21:19

Fell off thread 😳

I haven’t been doing well at all tbh. Started my new meds and they make me have no appetite for much of the day but then I suddenly remember I’m hungry and reach for junk food anyway, as I can’t handle cooking etc. So they aren’t helping like my previous meds did.

KihoBebiluPute · 20/02/2021 21:54

@TheThreeHeadedBeast 9lb in 7 weeks is perfectly respectable pace! Well done! It's great finding that tight clothes feel better. My size14 jeans are more comfortable now, I bought them as "aspirational" (I will fit into these one day) when I was size 16-18 and it was great the first time I could squeeze into them but it was a bit uncomfortable at first. I tried to repeat the trick with some size 12s, thought I might manage to squeeze into them uncomfortably and actually burst out the zip and had to do some serious repairs. I am not going to try that again until the scales say I am less than 70kg (maybe after Easter)

@SingToTheSky if meds are messing things up for you, you do need to be kind to yourself and not expect more than you can manage. It's ok to not always make progress when sometimes it takes all the effort you can muster just to keep from slipping backwards. Could you get in some less-junky snacks to reach for when hunger strikes? If I need a snack, a small bowl of popcorn, some raw button mushrooms with a spot of light Philadelphia, or some carrot sticks with houmous can give the satisfying sensation of something salty and crunchy without being too much calories. If you can't summon the energy to cook, maybe try out one of those ready-meal subscription services who adverts seem to be all over the place at the moment?

Bookaholic73 · 21/02/2021 08:42

Yay, lost some more weight this week!

Started at 12st 12lbs, and weighed in today at 12st 6lbs!

I have 1st 13lbs to lose!

I’m just going to have breakfast, have a shower, then I’ll catch up on the thread.

CosyAcorn · 21/02/2021 08:54

@ClaraTheImpossibleGirl I have the exact same thought process with sports bra and I've always gotten away without them until now. Then last week I noticed I had two deep grazes and now I've had to go braless for the last week to let my poor boobs recover!

Congratulations @Bookaholic73! That's wonderful!

@SingToTheSky I'm sorry your meds are causing you trouble. Definitely be kind to yourself.

I'm back down to 10st4 this morning so that's made me happy. As it's not raining I'm going to get some gardening done today. I'm extending a flowerbed so that should be some good exercise for me.

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 22/02/2021 10:49

Ouch @CosyAcorn Shock I did PE with Joe this morning and really noticed how much I need a decent sports bra Blush

Well done @Bookaholic73. I stayed the same this week, but I'll take that as I had a terrible weekend!

I hope things have improved @SingToTheSky - could the GP change your meds again if necessary? Or could you get some decent ready meals in just to save you cooking but to make sure you have something on hand when you get hungry? Anything that helps is useful when you're trying to recover Flowers

SingToTheSky · 22/02/2021 11:02

Aw thanks everyone. 💖 It’s adhd meds which unfortunately need a psychiatrist to change at all, I need to ring them tomorrow to discuss. They’re stimulants which can increase anxiety but these particular ones were supposed to be better 😭 and specifically a lot of people say they help with overeating! I found my first lot of ADHD meds helped hugely - I was less impulsive and had fewer cravings. But it was the anxiety that meant I had to come off them eventually and the weight crept back up.

Last couple of days I’ve felt a bit better though, and am actually managing to get on with stuff, so hopefully I’ve turned a corner. Also lost 2lb this week so I guess despite still eating junk food I have probably eaten less overall.

I’m still going to try adding an SSRI though - apparently escitalopram is quite good for anxiety, has anyone tried it?

SingToTheSky · 22/02/2021 11:04

And thank you for the ideas re food. I need to decide before it’s time to eat really as if I get too hungry I can’t think and then I just get more anxious 😳. I got a few nice bits in that are easy to eat. 😊
