Nourishing November

Right here's the new thread. Thought I would find a kind title as October has been a challenging month for so many and at the risk of sounding pessimistic, November is likely to be to. I'm starting at 9st2.75, my aim for the end of November is to get into the 8s.

You sound all set so! Being organised and planning ahead a great help!

IDontMindMarmite · 21/11/2020 16:34

Welcome Heartbeats. I usually cook from scratch and have inputted all my usual recipes into MFP.

Tip: If you weigh the whole thing when you've finished cooking it (minus the dish/pan/whatever!), and enter the total weight in grams as the serving size, then you can weigh your portion for a really accurate estimation and others in your household can have different portion sizes. Otherwise just assume equal portion sizes and input how many servings as usual.

I find that all of my regular meals are 500 cals or under now so I don't have to do too much maths on a day to day basis.

IDontMindMarmite · 21/11/2020 16:39

By the way Skips are 71 and Frazzles are 87 calories. Air popped pop corn is definitely the best value savoury snacky thing at 50-66 cals for the same weight respectively.

TheHoneyBadger · 21/11/2020 17:00

Definitely worth a go octopus. I'm not hungry really until I eat and then I could eat and eat. If I have breakfast (only really happens when I stay in a hotel or have Christmas breakfast with family) I'm starving all day.

Give it a try for a couple of weeks and see how you go.

No comment from me on weight or food today. I've been setting remote learning and recording lessons 'cringeingly' all day.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 21/11/2020 17:13

Well done HB! I have showered, body scrubbed and I'm in my pj's Grin bliss. Idontmindmarmite those are great tips, I have thought that about weighing whole amount of the dinner alright. Good to know re skips. What weight do you mean re popped corn? That's another good one.

Monochrome4 · 21/11/2020 17:47

Heartbeats Are you sure you've had 250 calories on milk in tea? That's half a litre of milk! That's either very milky tea or a hell of a lot of cups. Or both!

I'm lucky in that I don't like milky tea or coffee.

Some people on here manage a budget of 1200 calories. It's the absolute lowest recommended by anywhere. I'd be ready to eat my arm off with that little. I aim for 1600. I managed 1400 once and was so hungry at night that I had to get up and have an oatcake so I could sleep.

The app I use is called Nutritionix Track. It's free and I find it pretty good for recipes. There's a separate recipe list where you add your recipes and say how many it serves then log a serving each time you have it. If you use different quantities each time you can just go in and adjust the recipe. You can use speech recognition, so you can just speak the ingredients and quantities into it which is faster than typing into your phone. For branded foods you can scan bar codes too, or you can just search by typing.

IDontMindMarmite · 21/11/2020 17:54

@HeyGirlHeyBoy that's the equivalent weights of Skips and Frazzles which I think were between 13 and 18g.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 21/11/2020 18:59

Ah yes great thank you!

Heartbeats0708 · 21/11/2020 19:12

I'm definitely adding popcorn to my shop, I'd forgotten it even existed!
Unfortunately I'm pretty sure Monochrome I actually measured it. I do get through quite a few cups (young DC!) and like more than just a splash.
Today for me was more about learning what I'm actually consuming versus what I think I am having in a day, it's been eye opening to say the least.
I've tried to be organised this eve (measured out portions of rice/pasta/cereal to save guessing, hard boiled some eggs etc) and I think tomorrow I will measure out a set portion of milk to use throughout the day to stop it getting out of hand Blush

hangoverstruggles · 21/11/2020 22:54

Evening all,

I record 100ml semi-skimmed as part of my breakfast every morning to allow for 4 cups of tea / coffee. I should probably check if that's anywhere near accurate! I've got into having a hot chocolate in the evening and use half semi, half unsweetened almond milk to save cals.

Today has been off plan - think around 1800 allowing 1000 for my fish & chips... complete lack of veggies today!

B coffee
L pain au chocolate, blueberries, 2 rice cakes
D scampi & chips (fish and chip shop)
S Black Forest mince pie (absolutely worth it!), hot choc

Struggling to motivate myself to do the recorded my hiit class now it's online so activity is shite 😁

hangoverstruggles · 21/11/2020 22:57

Welcome @Heartbeats0708!

@TheHoneyBadger sorry you're having to juggle hone learning and work. This is my fear. So so difficult for you.

@Octopus37 on my days off I can go all morning without eating which gives more calories for later, but struggle on work days where I'm at my desk at 7am. Always starving by 9am! Wonder if my hunger has become a habit if I'm fine on days off? Interested to hear how you get on.

Monochrome4 · 21/11/2020 23:30

Some people manage without breakfast. My husband doesn't have it. But he learnt the hard way early on in our relationship that he must never EVER require me to wait for my breakfast. I can manage a shower and getting dressed before breakfast and that's it. If I have to wait any longer before eating I will not be responsible for my actions.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 22/11/2020 07:50

I'm similar monochrome! I even brought my ono to my dad's! Hot choc is a surprisingly low enough cal treat and feels v different to me to choc itself so worth considering as a night time drink. No scales here this AM so will report tomorrow. Luteal phas this week so aiming for 8st 10 this time next week..
B:ONO
L: eggs in some form
D: undecided.
Busy week ahead so will sort a meal plan tonight.

Heartbeats0708 · 22/11/2020 08:26

Thanks hangover Smile glad I joined you all, felt a little intrusive at first! It's definitely worth checking the milk thing, I was quite surprised when I realised how much I was putting in a cup of tea because I didn't think I had it especially milky.
I can easily manage without breakfast most days but sometimes eat it with dc. It does make for a hungrier day, I assumed it was because it started my metabolism?

Octopus37 · 22/11/2020 08:40

Welcome Hearbeats. Its interesting what other people say about breakfast, I could easily eat it but I'm not starving so can wait. Mind you, if I had to not have any dinner I would struggle. Did 19,000 steps yesterday, 9st1.25 this morning. Off to start studying now, as I have enroled on a Copywriting course.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 22/11/2020 08:58

Hope it's worthwhile octopus. Sitting down to my under 400 cal ono and it really is quite a feast! For me skipping any meal is gateway to overeating so I keep a regular enough menu.

Monochrome4 · 22/11/2020 09:43

HeyGirl mmmm looks good.

Enjoy the course Octopus.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 22/11/2020 14:15

In from my run. Honeybadger would love your help on what I'm looking for re heartbeat when exercising and recovery. If I'm on say 160bpm immediately after run, I'm to see how long to get back to what say? (Have made up that figure BTW but would like to keep an eye) And does anyone with a fit but know what the symbol under the sleep not tracked on the actual watch means? It's like a drop but it's not water intake and today mine says 10 until.. I've never noticed it before so perhaps something updated. 100k steps done in last 7 days. Yes! Forgetting cal counting for now and focusing on health, fitness and mental health.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 22/11/2020 14:16

Oh it's changed now to 4 to go..

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 22/11/2020 14:27

It's my period tracker Grin was going to post on FB to see what it was Blush

Monochrome4 · 22/11/2020 17:26

HeyGirlHeyBoy LOL imagine if you'd posted it on FB!

TheHoneyBadger · 22/11/2020 17:52

I was about to say it's your period but I see you got there! Google is probably your friend for the heart rate business too. I was just observing my own on the treadmill and seeing how it changed over time and regular visits and how quickly I could get it to drop if say I slowed my pace or decreased the incline compared to the time before or when I started out if that makes any sense at all.

Have spent most of the day working and recording lessons again so have barely moved but also just realised I haven't eaten anything either. Going to try to keep fasting for a while and attempt to then just have something light!

In fact I'm going to have a relaxing bath and delay dinner that way. It also means I can wash my hair and have less to do in the morning when I'm busy trying to force ds to get up and get set up for his live lesson of maths first period before heading into school myself to teach mid morning. Fun times Wink

Heartbeats0708 · 22/11/2020 18:22

Those oats look delicious!
I'm hoping to get a fitness tracker of some sort for christmas- any recommendations or ones to avoid? I'm on Android if it makes a difference.
I noticed today that the cals for yesterday's milk were out (incorrectly high on mfp) so between that and no breakfast today it's felt more manageable.
Had soup for lunch (no crisps!) And bolognese for dinner. Have enough left for a sweet treat if I feel like it later.
Sounds like you've had a busy day honeybadger I hope the munchies don't find catch you!

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 22/11/2020 18:33

Well done Heartbeats that sounds much more manageable and thanks Honeybadger, I will just start looking now when I stop. Only thing is my runs will increase in length from here on in, supposedly anyway, I prefer short runs with good pace to the long slog so will see. Definitely helps fitness tho and energy level even if cal burn low.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 22/11/2020 20:32

Friend just recommended this so I ordered one, looks nice and certainly smells like commitment! Grin
