Hello & Welcome

Roughly 8 weeks to Christmas ๐ŸŽ„. We all know itโ€™s been a strange unsettling year. Unprecedented. Nonetheless we all deserve to feel the best we can, be the best we can and strive to be as fit and healthy as possible. Not only will you look great in your finery, youโ€™ll be (to a degree) improving your immune system and your ability to fight infection should you get one. In addition, if we eat right, get outside, move more your mental health will heap the rewards. Better mental health = better choices. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

Me personally? In the main itโ€™s been a way of life for nearly 3 years and Iโ€™ve lost over 40lbs. I had a bit of blip at the start of C19. After all my hard work I just started eating with impunity. Before I knew it I was10lbs up in a few short weeks! I needed to get back on it and COVID proof myself ๐Ÿ˜ฌ I calorie count, log via MFP app, Intermittent fast, eat-low carb Mediterranean style aka Fast800 Plan and try to stay well hydrated. Due to some unfortunate circumstances in October I didnโ€™t really lose but did maintain. Iโ€™m hoping November will see me firmly in the healthy BMI bracket.

There are so many enjoyable lifestyle options out there without the need to resort to extreme measures. Whatever way you choose, it needs to be enjoyable & sustainable for the long term. This is a long term commitment rather than a quick fix. I also rarely drink alcohol and keep sugar to a minimum. I exercise by doing walking vids & strength sessions with lite weighs.

As no one size fits all members need to follow their own way of eating. Nonetheless this thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

There is no shaming, competition or harsh words to be found on this thread. We are in this together.

Checking in for November! Starting today on 58.9kg and hoping to be under 58kg by the end of the month.

Thanks for the new thread @TheRealHousewife!

TheRealHousewife · 30/10/2020 08:49

Hi @Trisolaris and youโ€™re very welcome.

I never receive alerts for mumsnet as I no longer use the old email address Iโ€™d registered with. Iโ€™ve tried several times to get it sorted (with help from mn) but to no avail.

Hi can I join in on this too. Pre covid I was 54kg now 60kg. I am quite fit and exercise a lot, I just lost my way in eating over the last few months. I plan on doing the whole 30 method as this worked well for me in the past. Checking in here for accountability and support.

TheRealHousewife · 30/10/2020 10:03

Welcome and jump right in @cloudofdreams. C19 has a lot to answer for! This is a safe place to share successes and rants ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Thanks for the new thread, @TheRealHousewife, just posted my final comments for October and will see you all on a lovely new thread in a few days. We're in the US now and for once are having a (very tiny) Halloween party. Just me, DH, adult DD who is back home with us between graduating and post grad studies and two friends who we have been socially bubbling with once a week. We felt sorry for the local kids so we are dressing up (on a theme of Archer, if anyone is familiar with the tv show) and will be handing out sweeties. Intending to drop them into their baskets, though, not let them stick their hands in our bowl!

DH's birthday this week as well, and he has requested steak pie followed by crรจme brรปlรฉe, so I will be exceptionally good to mitigate the effects of two nights of partying in one week ๐Ÿ˜‰

SunshineCake · 30/10/2020 15:32

Have posted on the October thread but want to remember my hope for November is to drop to a lower stone band. I'm not sure I can do it but I think it can by the end of 2020.

Feeling really low today. Really missing DS1 who is at uni. He is missing me to and had thought about coming home but doesn't want to bring any diseases back. I think he is going to higher band restrictions tomorrow so maybe couldn't come anyway. I'd love him to but also don't yet as we are doing his room as a surprise and it isn't finished yet!

Candacewasalwaysright · 30/10/2020 16:47

Hi @SunshineCake, I'm hoping to get into the next stone down by Christmas. It's a bit much of an ask by the end of November.

I empathise with you missing your DS. I haven't seen one of my DDs since February as she's had to be in a really tight bubble to continue with her studies and it's hard. I hope you get to see him soon.

FatGirlShrinking · 30/10/2020 16:53

So I will be re starting week 5 of c25K next week, turns out I'm not ready for a 20 min run. I managed 10 mins before having to change to walking.

Looking at my tracker I'd like to aim for another 10lb down in a November. That would put me in the lower half of 13 stone which would be nice.

Hi everyone joining for the first time! I have always had a funny relationship with food and the last 10 years have been so focused on my career that I have been using food to destress but also when I am bored at home with housework! I want to be healthier for my children, so to our thread is where I want to be this November. I am about 12.5 stone, need to pull out the scales and check latest, my dream is to get back down to 10.5, I am quite tall so that is probably far enough. Mostly I want to go back to thinking before I eat... it is mindless shovelling I have been doing (including childrenโ€™s leftovers...yuck!) thanks for making a safe space to chat! X

SunshineCake · 30/10/2020 18:35

Thanks @Candacewasalwaysright. DS1 has only been back at uni four weeks and a day. It feels a lot longer. I didn't get to wave him off as had to take DS2 to hospital so had a shorter lower key goodbye than would have had. He Skype so I see him on screen but of course it isn't the same and I feel for you with it being o long since you saw your daughter.

@flourandeggs welcome! Maybe pour washing up liquid on the kids leftovers so you don't want them? Mindless eating is so easy to do.

TheRealHousewife · 30/10/2020 20:09

@Candacewasalwaysright creme brรปlรฉe sounds delish. Worth saving calories for ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

@SunshineCake sorry to hear youโ€™re feeling low. Heartache from missing off spring is so painful ... Bloody C19 has a lot to answer for.

@FatGirlShrinking you are doing amazing well and have had a very successful year! Great chart ๐Ÿ‘โญ๏ธ๐Ÿฅ‡

@flourandeggs welcome youโ€™re starting weight is similar to what mine was, although Iโ€™m much shorter than you. Youโ€™ve come to the right place for support and accountability. You can do it!

Hello checking in for November, thanks @TheRealHousewife. :)

I've been consistently just under 58kg the last couple of weeks, feels much more likely to stick than it did before. I had a similar "lockdown blip" when my eating went to pot so it feels good to have lost those few kg (for about the 4th time in 5 years ๐Ÿ˜‚ ).

Thanks for all your support everyone๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Š

BlowThisForEggAndSoldiers · 31/10/2020 04:15

Hi everyone. Joining in for the first time. I have been losing weight slowly (down 7kg) for a few months now, still have 11kg to lose.
Separated from husband recently and went off the rails a bit, but decided yesterday to get my good self-care routines going again - so this thread starting is perfect timing!

I'm eating low carb, high protein to lose the weight, and I'm walking, using dumbells, and doing crunches to try to get some tone.

BlowThisForEggAndSoldiers · 31/10/2020 04:19

flourandeggs I also have a problem with children's leftovers, but my real nemesis is raiding their lunch box snack stash.

tulipsaremyfave · 31/10/2020 04:38

Hi! I started at the beginning of September, low calorie and I really cut back on carbs. I'm down 14 lbs so far and another 15 to go!

Puffler · 31/10/2020 04:56

Hello can I join you? I desperately need to do something about my weight; Iโ€™ve gained 1.5 stone this year and my diabetes is (very) out of control for the first time in 8 years. My GP gave me a gentle roasting this week.

I now need to lose 4 stone to get into a healthy BMI which suddenly sounds like a lot compared to the 2.5 I needed to lose at the start of the year when I felt massive! This has to be peak fatness for me, I canโ€™t allow myself to keep ballooning. Like many, 2020 has been a year of misery and when I comfort eat, boy do I comfort eat. I pretty much mainline white sliced bread as toast and butter. None of my clothes fit, I donโ€™t have a single coat that does up.

So November. Cut back on carbs. Cut back on sugar. Intermittent fasting. Increase exercise.

I donโ€™t think I can cut out anything completely as 25 odd failed diets have shown me this year so reduction is my goal this month. Main goal is to end the year the same weight I started at, so lose 1.5 stone and then keep losing it into the new year. With that in mind Iโ€™d like to lose 12lbs November (and 9lbs December). Also going to start couch to 5km last week. A few years ago I was running marathons, now I couldnโ€™t run to the end of the road... Iโ€™m also going to do yoga to increase flexibility.

Iโ€™m not a big one for posting but going to make an effort in the name of accountability.

November Goals

  1. lose 12lbs
  2. End the month able to run 20 mins
  3. Do minimum 8 yoga classes/sessions

I know 12lbs is a lot, but Iโ€™ve a lot to lose and itโ€™s my first month so should be achievable, subsequent months Iโ€™ll set my goal lower.

Topsy1976 · 31/10/2020 05:10

I'll join - I'm 11st12 and I've put on 9lbs since March. Would like to get back to that weight by Christmas. I've started doing more exercise but eat (and drink) too much. Goals are: no alcohol mon-thurs, 1200 cals on MFP, 3 runs a week.

Lambkin14 · 31/10/2020 05:18

I'd like to join please - still haven't shifted the baby weight from first dc and would like to start TTC another sometime next year. Currently weigh 100.7kg, BMI 31.8 so first goal is to get from obese to overweight. Ideally would like to lose around 0.5kg a week and get down to 95kg by Christmas.

FatGirlShrinking · 31/10/2020 05:29

Hello @Puffler @Topsy1976 and @Lambkin14 and welcome to the group!

@Puffler I have PCOS and am insulin resistant so you and I will have similar dietary needs. I started this weight loss burst back in January very half heartedly and then quit in March with lockdown and all that fun. Came back in August and decided that I needed to really really make this work. Started at 233lb and obese, now 197lb and overweight so it is possible! I have 33lb to lose to get to healthy and then another 20 odd to get to the ideal weight for my height.

I cut down carbs, only fruit I eat now is berries, bread is maybe once a week, same with pasta and potatoes. Instead I have lots of green veg ( a cup of green beans is 40 cals, 20 for a cup of mushrooms, 40 for a cup of baby corn so for 100 cals you can have a big plate of food). I also do IF so I don't have breakfast and just eat between 11 and 7. It's working really well as I'm not a breakfast fan anyway and I don't find myself getting hungry anymore. The first week weaning off of carbs was hard though and I was very very hungry, once that passed it's been fine. Make sure you have good fats, lots of veg and enough protein.

Doseydots · 31/10/2020 06:38

What a lovely opening thread. Although I need this for my well-being more than my weight, have been eating so much sugar and my alcohol intake is creeping up, I am carrying extra pounds. This thread can make me accountable. Lockdown is playing havoc with my usual positive attitude. I will catch up with the full thread later today. Making the fist step of posting this already makes me feel better.

Bramblecrumble · 31/10/2020 06:50

I have an active job, moderatly where I'm on my feet most of the day but it's walking not heavy labour. I have used this as an excuse not to excersize. I have a two year old and have been doing home excersises with her in and off her whole life. She's recently got really into doing the moves with me rather than using me as a climbing frame. Before her I did run, some park runs a couple of 10ks. More recently I've been loosly following the c25k but hard to fit a regular time in so I think I'll exceraize at home. We've recently ordered a ringfit, for the switch looks great. Food is my downfall. Cake is often in the staffroom, I love chocolate, crumpets, nice big breakfasts etc. I never manage to log myfitnesspal for more than a few days.

Puffler · 31/10/2020 07:46

@FatGirlShrinking thank you thatโ€™s really helpful! Yes I have PCOS and type 2 diabetes so definitely the odds are stacked against me. I think the IF sounds quite important and 11-7 does sound quite achievable so I might join you on that timing. I love carbs and have pasta, potato and bread with every meals so that will be tough. I need to stock up on green veg! Itโ€™s really encouraging to see youโ€™ve already lost a lot. Iโ€™d be so happy to get to overweight now rather than obese. I was only 7lbs off that at the start of the year (and had been that weight for a while) but now 28lbs off that seems like a huge hurdle. But the longer I hesitate, the more it seems to get so I really am all in for November.

rivierliedje · 31/10/2020 08:35

Final weigh in for October today putw me at down 3.2lb which isn't terrible. Aim for 4 or 5lb in November.
It's been a busy morning already: run, made bread, have a tea brack in the oven, made my lunch to take to work (mushrooms, beet tops, kale) put away the laundry that was drying and have done one load and hung it out and a second is in.

Trisolaris · 31/10/2020 10:21

Welcome new members!

Good luck to all starting C25k! I ran my first 5k yesterday in the pouring rain. It took 35mins to do 5.22k but given that a couple months ago I didnโ€™t run at all Iโ€™m pretty happy.

Iโ€™m starting this morning with a purition protein smoothie with oat milk and frozen berries. Food hasnโ€™t been great for the last week or so with all the worries about trisolcat but sheโ€™s doing really well (tough little cookie!) so Iโ€™m back on it today.

FatGirlShrinking · 31/10/2020 11:38

Today will be my first day not logging my food in over 3 months, we're having a Halloween day which includes a buffet for lunch and dinner and really cannot be doing with logging lots of bits and bobs, so I'm going to manually add in 2000 assuming I will be going over calories and just write the day off. I'll still try to make good choices where possible though.

Went to the shoe shop today and have some good trainers, having a gait analysis done is a bit odd but I learnt that I run on the ball of my feet and my feet turn out a bit so have some tips on improving my form.
