Shorties trying to lose weight!

SwimmingOnEggshells · 29/09/2020 12:02

I started my fatbusting journey a couple of weeks ago and my plan is to document my progress here.

So far I've been doing a fair bit of cardio - 5 times per week - and I'm hoping this will help me get rid of some lbs. I posted a thread on AIBU looking for people's advice on only using exercise to lose weight but the general consensus is that no, I need to calorie restrict too. Boo! is what I say to that but maybe I need to face facts that I'm no longer a spring chicken and need to make a concerted effort with food too to shed anything!

Anyone want to join me?! @neverenoughchelseaboots

Current weight: 60kg/132lbs

I’m reAlly failing this week. I just keep eating rubbish.

WhistlersandJugglers · 11/12/2020 08:33

My weight held steady at 10stone exactly. I ate better all week but had a few drinks and crisps too so I'm OK with that.
Two weeks to Christmas!! I hope to make it through the next week fairly sensibly. It's getting harder to resist Christmas treats so I plan to get in over an hour of walking every day if possible, soup for lunch and no chocolate yet.

Smellybluecheese · 11/12/2020 10:06

I’ve made it to under 9 stone! Just...8 stone 13.8 but still! Very happy with that as that was my pre-Christmas target. I’ve lost 1.2 pounds this week. I’m also wearing a skirt I haven’t been able to fit into for years.

27/7/20 10 stone 4
11/12/20 8 stone 13.8
Loss 1 stone 4.2
Height: 5 foot and half an inch

SwimmingOnEggshells · 11/12/2020 11:04

Woohoo @Smellybluecheese amazing! that is brilliant, well done you. What was your starting weight?

@WhistlersandJugglers at least it's not a gain! Getting close to christmas is definitely getting harder, I agree.

A very measly 1/4 lb down for me, so I'm now 128lbs and 1/2, I think that's 9 stone 2.5 lbs. Don't think I'll get below 9st before Christmas which I'm a bit disappointed about but I'm going to keep at it for the next week and a half and then ease up for a week or so for Christmas.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 11/12/2020 11:05

Just re-read your post @Smellybluecheese, that's an amazing loss - 1 stone 4.2lbs. Do you exercise much or is just diet?

Smellybluecheese · 11/12/2020 11:18

@SwimmingOnEggshells - thanks, I’m really pleased. That’s been since the end of July though so it’s been quite slow. I’ve been running three times a week (5k) and do half an hour of yoga (nearly) every day. I’ve only taken up exercise since lockdown as before I had a 4 hour round trip commute so didn’t have the time. So it’s been really nice to be able to do that. I did couch to 5k and yoga with Adriene. But I’m also calorie counting using nutracheck which I think is the main thing that’s worked.

I have to go on holiday with my in laws next summer (covid permitting) and one SIL is v tall and model like so that is quite motivating.

neverenoughchelseaboots · 11/12/2020 11:20

Well done @Smellybluecheese that must be a great feeling.

@SwimmingOnEggshells, @WhistlersandJugglers maintaining and steading losses in December is good going.

I also reached my 'by Christmas' weight goal today - 9st 3.5lb - my first time of losing a full pound in a week. I usually don't drink or do run - this week I've done both.

Like you Swimming, I'm going to keep at it for another week and a half to at least try to maintain (secretly hopes for another half a pound) I'm hoping that the christmas bubble period will keep the indulgence to just 4/5 days rather than the usual fortnight. I'm planning on still getting the runs in, especially if there's 3 additional family members around to help out round the house and with DD. So aiming for 9st 5.5lb max starting point for Jan.

Start 25th Sep - 9st 10.8lbs /28.7% body fat
Last week - 9st 4.6lbs / 27.1% body fat
Today - 9st 3.5lb / 26.8% body fat

Just noticed that my body fat is almost 2% down since this thread started at the end of September - I'm delighted.

Knittingnanny · 11/12/2020 12:22

Well done smellybluecheese, I would love to get under 9 st again . I was 8 st 13 lb before I had last child in 1991 and have steadily increased over the last 29 years to about 10 st. 4
I was 9 st 4 this week and have 9.3 as my Christmas Eve target but am stuck!
Allowing for gain over Christmas I’ll prob set 8.13 as a new target starting in Jan. I’ve got the NHS graph on my phone and it’s great to see the line slowly pointing downwards.
Can’t believe I’ve only lost 13lbs on very low calorie since Sept 1st, used to be able to lose 4 lbs in a few days in my 20/30’s.
Went for a walk yesterday, it might be psychosomatic but my knees were were definitely feeling less painful
Keep going everyone

Morningmaeve · 11/12/2020 13:46

Hello all - I had a mixed week so I am pleased to report a loss. Today I am 9 stone 6.2 so another half pound off. I am dropping to two meals a day for a couple of days a week and avoid junk food but my wine consumption is preventing faster progress!

Morningmaeve · 11/12/2020 13:51

And I too would love to get under 9 stone eventually :)

Smellybluecheese · 11/12/2020 14:56

Everyone is doing really well! I’m going to keep going for another week as that’s when I finish work then hope that Christmas doesn’t do too much damage...no doubt will be back over 9 stone by January.
@Knittingnanny I am nearly back at pre-baby weight (6 years on) but then I was always hoping to lose half a stone from there.

MrsAvocet · 11/12/2020 15:51

Argh. I've gained another 0.5kg. So disappointing. Now 2.1kg off my end of year target so I really need to work hard over the next 3 weeks!! I've just been for a 30mile bike ride in the freezing cold and pouring rain as penance.
If I haven't lost anything next week please feel free to be rude and abusive to me. I don't want to fall at the last hurdle! Sad

SwimmingOnEggshells · 11/12/2020 16:07

@MrsAvocet it's probably just water weight, don't be hard on yourself :)

@Smellybluecheese I think 1 stone 4 lbs since July is actually quite fast, I've been at this since September and I've only lost a measly 5/6 lbs!

For me to get to pre-baby weight I need to get down to 7 stone 8lbs...argh! Seems impossible with this slooooow pace.

On the soup recipes, thank you for posting those, I'm going to add butternut squash, sweet potato and cauliflower to my shopping list for this week.

I went for another cold, wet bike ride this morning and managed to resist the post ride cake, so that's good. Naturally the sun has come out now I'm back home, but riding in the rain must use more calories mustn't it?Grin
Home made leek and potato soup for lunch now and then I need to clean the house which hopefully will burn a few more calories. I'm determined to be good until Christmas now.

Leftmyheartindr · 12/12/2020 15:32

Hi everyone. Long time reader, first time poster here. I found this thread through googling “weight loss” and “petite”!
Height: 4”11
Starting Weight: 9st 8lbs
Current Weight: 7st 11lbs
I’ve lost over 2st...in 13 weeks.
Here’s how:

Vitamins: I take Agnus Castus for my cycle and a multivitamin. The first week I took them, my appetite reduced by about two thirds. Before I felt deep hunger and cravings that I couldn’t resist through willpower alone. With the tablets, they disappeared. My body really needed these vitamins and it made a HUGE difference.
Diet: calories in, calories out. MFP. My TDEE is 1337 calories, so for a 500 calorie deficit I can only eat 837. That is NOT too few. The key is protein.
A typical days diet:
Breakfast:
50g mixed berries & 50g mango
2 Heck Chicken Sausages
Snack:
50g edamame beans
Lunch:
Miso soup
2 fish fingers
Dinner:
1/2 poached skinless chicken breast
1/2 red pepper
1/4 cucumber
No added sugar yoghurt

Total: 509 calories

I did not feel hungry with this diet most days. If I did, then it was simple...I ate something. The second half of the chicken breast, another 50g edamame. I was still under my calories for the day.

So that my body didn’t get too used to a super low cal diet, I aimed for maintenance Sat & Sun. A few typical treat dinners for me at a weekend...
1/4 pepperoni pizza
A big salad
1 Mars bar ice cream (only 140 something cals! Who knew?)
Or
Spice tailor spicy Goan curry
Madhur Jaffrey’s Mustard Seed Cabbage

And on a weekend I’d typically have mid afternoon cake and hot chocolate too.

I did this every weekend and still lost 2lbs almost every week (more at the start).

Attitude: I have a few mantras that help me. When I see someone eating something I want but can’t have, I say to myself: “that’s chocolate cake. You know what it tastes like. You’ve had it before. You’ll have it again in the future. Just not now.” Also, I tried to separate “food” and “pleasure” in my mind. For example, I had a plan to watch a movie with a friend overseas via zoom. I was going to have a yoghurt as I watched the movie then I realised: I had the pleasure of her company, the movie that I’d wanted to see for ages...why did I need a third pleasure on top of that?
I heard someone on here say that you have to resign yourself to eating “toddler food” for awhile. I totally agree.
Finally, there’s a quote from The West Wing that I’ve found applicable to my diet- Leo: “presidential debates are lost on 1 square foot of real estate”gestures to head
I was gaining weight and overweight for years. I tried to lose it and couldn’t. It wasn’t until this year, with the lockdown, that I had the mental space to actually do it. Self denial, self control all require a lot of mental and emotional energy for me. If I didn’t have enough to spare, then forget the diet.

Exercise: 10k steps a day. That’s it.

This is so long, sorry! If anyone’s still reading, to sum up...I’ve heard it said on here that 2lbs a week loss is not realistic for shorties. That may well be true for some, but I’m living proof that it’s not universally true for short people. My view is, I’d rather exert a lot of willpower for a short time and achieve a big result, than exert a little willpower over a long period and achieve gradual results. If you prefer to lose a pound or so a month, and be working to reduce your weight for a considerable time period, then I’m happy you’re doing what’s right for you. But if you’d rather lose the weight and get back to feeling like yourself again in a relatively short time, just know it’s possible, even for shorties. It is truly amazing how few calories you can thrive on, if they come from the right things.

So thank you everyone, for your encouragement! You really have helped me. Thank you and best of wishes to you all.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 14/12/2020 09:50

@Leftmyheartindr thanks for sharing your story. I'm not sure I'm willing to change my eating habits as much as that so I'm happy to accept a slower weight loss - 6lbs in 11 weeks for me.

Wishing you all the best at maintaining, you must feel great to have had such a transformation!

OP posts:
SwimmingOnEggshells · 14/12/2020 09:52

I managed to maintain the same weight over the weekend, delighted with that! Still at 128.5 lbs...! woo

I can't remember who posted the cauliflower soup but I bought an xl one yesterday so I'm going to try that out. I think it had thyme in it? I'll google anyway.

OP posts:
Morningmaeve · 14/12/2020 11:01

You do prove it can be done @Leftmyheartindr and I think I could do similar for two days a week but not for more so I accept my progress will be slow but as long as I am going in the right direction I am okay with that What you say about attitude is very interesting. Good luck with maintaining.

Smellybluecheese · 14/12/2020 15:02

Hey @SwimmingOnEggshells - the cauliflower soup was me:
Roast cauliflower with cumin and thyme, meanwhile fry an onion, a stick of celery and 2 cloves garlic. And 750ml stock and the cauliflower and simmer for 15 minutes. Then stir in 100ml of single cream and a small bunch of chopped parsley.

@Leftmyheartindr that is an amazing achievement, but that much restriction is not for me. I've tried low carb / high protein before and as a veggie it is very very difficult!

I've out on 2lb overnight - it's either PMS or because I ate some mashed potato last night. I otherwise stuck to my calories. But anyway, no longer uner 9 stone :(

SwimmingOnEggshells · 14/12/2020 19:46

@Smellybluecheese
I made a very similar one in the end, I roasted it first with garlic and then on the hob I fried some onions, added thyme (no cumin), stock and blitzed it up. I left out the cream too. It was delicious. But I am sooooo gassy now, good thing I'm working from home... :)

You'll lose those lbs again, it's probably just water and period def makes me gain a couple.

OP posts:
DiesalFive · 16/12/2020 06:58

@Leftmyheartindr great results for you, well done!

Unfortunately I couldn't restrict that much with all the exercise I do, I think I'd pass out. And I'd end up ravenous (and very grumpy). Personally I've found the slower I lose it, it stays off too.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 16/12/2020 10:43

The thread has become very quiet... I wonder is it because people have succumbed to the indulgences of the festivities!

I'm managing to stay remain on course for now, I'm aiming to get down to 127lbs/ 9 stone 1 for Friday and I think it's looking positive. To get under 9 stone - that would be amazing.

During the week I've been so disciplined: skinny cappuccino for breakfast, soup for lunch with a boiled egg and then a normal dinner. No snacks, no alcohol, no junk. It's definitely getting easier now that I'm starting to see some results.

OP posts:
WhistlersandJugglers · 16/12/2020 11:04

I've been sick since I weighed in on Friday, sore throat and bad cold. I haven't exercised or even been out for a walk. My diet has been OK because I'm not too hungry and feel like having soup. I'm also living out of the freezer because I don't want to go to the supermarket until I'm better so there's no treats in the house.

Covid is so annoying. In a regular year I wouldn't even consider staying home with a cold but I don't want to be spreading any germs to people this close to the holidays.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 16/12/2020 11:52

I'm smothering with a cold too @WhistlersandJugglers! You're in Ireland aren't you? There's an awful dose going around. I actually got a covid test this morning which I'm pretty sure will be negative but I'm seeing friends in a couple of days and I want to make sure it's definitely not covid. I have to sleep sitting propped up on pillows because I keep coughing so much, it's horrible :( I'm popping actifed and sudafed like nobody's business, I believe it's an appetite suppressant which is a tiny bit of a silver lining.

I hope you get better soon Flowers
