Shorties trying to lose weight!

I started my fatbusting journey a couple of weeks ago and my plan is to document my progress here.

So far I've been doing a fair bit of cardio - 5 times per week - and I'm hoping this will help me get rid of some lbs. I posted a thread on AIBU looking for people's advice on only using exercise to lose weight but the general consensus is that no, I need to calorie restrict too. Boo! is what I say to that but maybe I need to face facts that I'm no longer a spring chicken and need to make a concerted effort with food too to shed anything!

Anyone want to join me?! @neverenoughchelseaboots

Current weight: 60kg/132lbs

I've gained a pound.Sad Not unexpected after last weekend's cake consumption though and it could be worse. My exercise programme has been disrupted today too as we've had heavy snow. I had planned to go for a bike ride but I think its a day for staying indoors!

Karcheer · 04/12/2020 13:34

Height - 5ft
Started 29/11 - 56.5kg
4/12 - 54.3kg
Lost this week - 2.3kg

I’m not sure how accurate either of these figures are as I had to move the scales. I’m definitely less bloated but I’m not sure if this is mainly due to reducing carbs.
I expect to add some kg over the weekend as it’s my birthday!

@MrsAvocet I was due to go to the gym later but I don’t think I’m going to go, the lanes are totally flooded and will get worse as the snow thaws on the fields. I’ll start afresh next week.

A blow out isn’t too bad every now and then as it’s supposed to be good for metabolism.
Alcohol is terrible for weightloss, maybe just keep it to the odd glass at the weekend?

Morningmaeve · 04/12/2020 13:40

Morning all - I have maintained as expected so 9 stone 6.8lb. It was the best I could hope for really as I have let things slip a bit. Like you @SwimmingOnEggshells I let the weekend undo all my good work during the week. Must. Try. Harder. I'd really like to drop another pound - or even more - before Christmas. Then ideally maintain and start afresh in January. I am thinking about doing a dry January too so that should help.

WhistlersandJugglers · 05/12/2020 13:54

I gained a pound but was expecting worse. We got a hamper from DH's work during the week. We put away the chocolate and biscuits for closer to the day but I've been making steady progress on the fancy crackers.
Maybe I should put self-control on my list for Santa.

Karcheer · 05/12/2020 22:07

today i've had a banana, veg omelette... then... Gingerbread Costa and an Indian takeaway (Poppadom and Chutneys, lamb pasanda and rice...)

onto tomorrow...

modernfemininity · 07/12/2020 02:01

I am just checking in. I have stuck to the 16:8 and the 5:2 and still it will be touch and go as to whether I have maintained or gained for weigh in Monday.

We done plodding onward everybody. It is disheartening sometimes but if we can make a change, and space out smaller meals, and keep active, the pounds will slowly fall away.
Also sleep... sleep better ( I need to!) and that helps weight loss too. Xmas Smile

SwimmingOnEggshells · 07/12/2020 08:38

Anyone heavier after the weekend? I'm up a lb and a half, it's so frustrating! I calculated my calories for the weekend and there's no way I ate 3500 over my daily recommended intake!

OP posts:
neverenoughchelseaboots · 07/12/2020 10:32

Yep @SwimmingOnEggshells lb and a half up for me too. But it was DD birthday party yesterday so lots of beige party food. We don't really eat anything ready-made usually so we all felt dreadful yesterday afternoon - I think we had a salt hangover 😂

I've had a couple of positive things this weekend - spoke to DH about being concerned about my drinking and when I intend not to drink (mid-week and all of Jan) and asked for support.

Also for the last two years when I see photos of myself I always think 'but that's not what I look like!' I look puffy in the face and unhealthy. But on photos from the party yesterday I look like me again! More shape to the face and generally brighter.

Off to have one last piece of Colin the Caterpillar so I can get on with my healthier week. 🐛 🎂

Kidney bean and veg enchiladas are on the menu for this evening.

neverenoughchelseaboots · 07/12/2020 10:35

Just in case anyone thinks I'm really naughty and had a big party - it was a very exclusive party with just the household. I didn't realise you could have so much fun, it wasn't just the best day I've had all year but for several years I think. Three year olds are ace!

modernfemininity · 07/12/2020 10:56

I am so so grateful for this thread. I have loved reading everyone’s comments.

I am up a little (0.2kg) after the weekend. It’s the added Wine and definitely the portion size(!!) wot did it. I also have had mini mince pies most evenings now I am maintaining. It is okay for me to be a tiny bit up. Sometimes a larger meal can help jump the metabolism. But I need to drop down again and fluctuate rather than be up next week.

Keep going @SwimmingOnEggshells. This is a wonderful, wonderful shorties thread - that YOU started. You CAN be slim and slender as well as petite! We as a ‘group’ have special considerations ....we all need to retrain to eat like a petite shortie lady, and to not eat like a stocky shot-putter.Grin

modernfemininity · 07/12/2020 10:58

@neverenoughchelseaboots your party sounds family heaven! X

Smellybluecheese · 07/12/2020 11:20

Yep, I'm up a pound. I went to the Christmas event at our local NT place yesterday and had a halloumi burger, hot chocolate and mulled wine. According to nutracheck I was 700 calories over, not 3500 but my body seems to disagree. I do find it very hard to eat like a petite short lady ALL THE TIME or be punished for it. I stuck to 1200 calories religiously on Friday and Saturday. Anyway, back to it today...

@neverenoughchelseaboots your party sounds lovely! I miss having a small child (mine is 6).

Knittingnanny · 07/12/2020 11:30

I’ve taken over a week to lose a measly 1/2 lb but that’s better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick as my old dad would say!
One little local granddaughter who we look after once a week in normal times is 3 today so having a doorstep visit this afternoon and a tiny sliver of birthday cake.
I’m planning on continuing til Christmas Eve then starting again Jan 2nd. However with shorties that could undo about 3 months of calorie counting!

Knittingnanny · 07/12/2020 11:31

I’m planning ( ever hopeful) though to be more mindful over Christmas eg count out sweets from the tub instead of just dipping in .

SwimmingOnEggshells · 07/12/2020 12:21

@modernfemininity thank you :) what a lovely message! You'll have no trouble at all maintaining, you're so disciplined!

It's reassuring to hear that everyone else gains a bit over the weekend, I had a quick google about it and apparently it's very normal and it's mostly water retention and your body working the extra food out of your system. The main thing, as is always the case, is to get back on the wagon!

@neverenoughchelseaboots it's lovely to hear you had such a special day with your DD. I have a DD the same age and I find it a magical age. You just don't know what they're going to come out with next!

@Knittingnanny and happy birthday to your little granddaughter Cake

I didn't weigh myself but was out for lunch on Sat and had a family birthday on Friday. It was nice to get out on Saturday after being in lockdown for so long.
I felt very sluggish yesterday after all the junk and did a very healthy grocery shop and plan to really focus on vegetables for the week. It's certainly soup weather here in Ireland today.

Karcheer · 07/12/2020 18:49

Oh i've had another rubbish day :( even had cake and a packet of crisps!

SwimmingOnEggshells · 09/12/2020 11:37

How's everyone getting on? The closer we get to Christmas the more my mettle is tested! So far I've been on track since the weekend which is good. And my sister told me yesterday she thought I looked slimmer, bonus!

I'm within a hare's breadth of my last Friday weight so I'm cautiously optimistic that I'll have a loss this week.

OP posts:
neverenoughchelseaboots · 09/12/2020 12:05

Excellent @SwimmingOnEggshells any loses in December are incredibly hard won I think. And when the results are noticeable to people it's all worth it.

I'm having a good week, down 0.8lb from last week and only 0.2lb off my Christmas weight goal!

I might put a bit on by Friday because I've not been able to exercise for logistical reasons the last couple of days. And I ate a massive amount of Colin the caterpillar cake last night just to get rid of the damn thing.

But I've not had any wine this week and feeling resolved about making changes there, so overall I'm feeling gooooood.

Hope everyone else is having a good week too. x

MrsAvocet · 09/12/2020 13:09

I'm feeling quite good about myself today even though I've not been very good for the last few weeks. I'd noticed that my winter cycling kit was very baghy so I ordered some new and it arrived today. I tried it on with some trepidation as I had prevaricated over what size to order. Last winter I was wearing L on my top and XL bottoms. I was going to order M, but as its expensive stuff, zI've just lost my job and I am still losing I decided to get S even though it might be a bit aspirational. And it fits! Fairly comfortably.
I'm really happy. Grin

SwimmingOnEggshells · 09/12/2020 13:48

Yay to feeling good @neverenoughchelseaboots!

XL to S is an amazing feat @MrsAvocet!

I bought a J Crew petite coat and it arrived yesterday, I bought a medium and I'm thinking I should have gotten a small...but I'm going to keep it anyway as I think the slouchy look is nice at the moment. I can't wait to buy more small-sized clothes!

I know someone a while ago asked about soup recipes, I just made one that was delicious:

Frozen onions fried in a tiny bit sunflower oil
Added a small teaspoon of red curry paste - mae ploy
4 roughly chopped large carrots
1 knorr chicken stock pot
Add water (I don't measure, just done by eye and add more later if needed)
1 teaspoon fish sauce
1 heaped teaspoon of peanut butter

Blitz with a stick blender when cooked.

DELICIOUS

Thank you @SwimmingOnEggshells I was pleasantly surprised. Obviously its lycra, so stretchy, but its not being stretched to the maximum and i feel like it genuinely fits me.
If we are swapping soup recipes, here is my favourite - sweet potato and butternut squash. It's never quite the same twice when I make it as it depends on the proportions and I lost the actual recipe years ago. But its thinner and less filling if you put a lot of butternut in and really thick and filling if you use more of the potatoes.
Anyway....
Chop one medium size onion and a couple of cloves of garlic and fry gently in a little oil for a few mins til onions becoming transparent.
Chop one medium sized ordinary potato, a couple of sweet potatoes and some butternut squash - I usually use the top part (the solid part without the seeds) of a medium sized one . Add to the onions and fry for a few mins before covering with about 750ml of water with a vegetable or chicken stock cube disolved in it.
Bring to the boil then simmer for 20 mins or so til veg are soft. Add salt, pepper and a handful of roughly chopped fresh coriander (or I use the frozen chopped stuff sometimes but fresh is nicer)
But it in a blender and whizz til smooth. Serve with crusty bread - its delicious and filling and remarkably creamy. My DH wouldn't believe it didn't have cream in the first time I made it in fact. Its the regular potato that does that. I missed it out once and it wasn't as nice.
It's one of my "signature dishes"and is super easy but I pretend its difficult if people ask for the "secret recipe" Grin

WhistlersandJugglers · 09/12/2020 16:40

I have butternut squash soup in the fridge at the moment. I put in cumin and a tablespoon of mango chutney and it gives a lovely mild curry flavour.
I love leek and potato soup too. I agree about potato giving a lovely creaminess.
I feel much better today after just a few days of no junk.

Smellybluecheese · 09/12/2020 16:57

Yay for small clothes! That's a great achievement @MrsAvocet

On the soup tip, I had a delicious roast cauliflower soup today:
Roast cauliflower with cumin and thyme, meanwhile fry an onion, a stick of celery and 2 cloves garlic. And 750ml stock and the cauliflower and simmer for 15 minutes. Then stir in 100ml of single cream and a small bunch of chopped parsley. Really good.

I've struggled with it this week as it's getting colder and nearer to Christmas and I just want to hibernate - but had a good day yesterday and been ok so far today. Went for a 5k run at lunchtime and got a PB (easier when it's cold and you just want to get it over with!) I also finished my 4th series of 30 days of yoga with adriene last night and finally got both feet flat on the ground in downward dog so I'm taking that as a non-scales victory.
