Have just done Davina Upper Body workout, managed it okay Feels nice to be enjoying some exercise again. I might attempt a 3 mile run with dh tomorrow night if I feel up to it.

What's everyone else up to today? I might do something with the dc's later, swim or park maybe. Going out to Pizza express tonight with dd and a friend and her dd, so will no doubt have a couple of glasses of wine but will be good food-wise - share a pizza, add a side salad and NO dessert!

TheodoresMummy · 26/06/2007 14:48

All I managed to do yesterday was ferry DS to and from nursery on the bike .

Went to the gym this morning tho . Did crosstrainer, rower, exercis bike and treadmill (walking fast uphill) - 40 minutes total. And I cycled there and back.

Sorry, just a little boast .

And my Everybody Get Ripped DVD came this morning, so will take a look at it tonight and do a workout tomorrow !!!

speedymama · 26/06/2007 23:29

I did the 40 minute cardio section of Nell McAndrew's Ultimate challenge followed by Core Abs DVD by Shiva Rea this evening.

Ultimate Challenge is ultimately exhausting!

Hi All, not been around for a few days...just didn't get on the PC, lol!
Well, had problems to get back into the right mode last week, but have worked out everyday this week so far Did Nell's Maximum Impact on Monday, Davinas Power of 3 yesterday and Harvey Walden's today.
Went to WW on Tuesday and had put on, as expected, anohter 1 1/2 Ibs.....but next week I will have lost a few pounds, again...well, I am hoping, lol....! It's quite freaky how well I know my body and how good I am at guessing how much I have put on...never quite that good at guessing my losses, though, lol!
Laloop, that Wendy Plan makes so much sense...have read something like that before online...!
Manda, remember muscle weighs more, so, if you only started working out recently, then that might be why the scales show that you put on, rahte rthen lost...however, you might want to take your measurements and see how it is going that way...it's really encouraging to see when the inches come off, even if the scales don't show a loss or much of it, etc...! You have done really well, btw...I am 5ft6 and find it's much more difficult for me to loose weight once I hit 10st...!
lol Marls...I never really liked weights many years ago, when I used to go to the Gym, but now I love the weight sections in some of the exercise DVD's I owe.
Orm, lol at those young lads ...I think it might be an attempt of flirting ;)
Well done Theodmum
Speedy...I can only do Nell's workouts in teh mornings...int eh evening they drive me to the toilet constantly, lol....!

speedymama · 27/06/2007 15:12

Hi 3andnomore, wow, you have been busy.

I'm going to the gym soon and the after putting twins to bed tonight, will work out to my Essential Pilates DVD.

Also, since Saturday, the only complex carbohydrate I have eaten is cous-cous and my tummy has really flattened out. Planning to have a jacket potato tonight though as I would like to go for a 3 mile run tomorrow.

Hi everyone

Hope you enjoy the DVDs, Theodoresmummy . I'm going to do either Davina or Nell's this morning! Back pain has gone, yayyy!! Will have to be careful lifting ds2 from now on and get out of the habit of carrying him on my hip for short distances (he's at the stage he doesn't always want in his buggy but gets tired if we're out walking). So will take it easy for a day or two and then give TaeBo another blast.

Dd and ds1 finish school tomorrow for the summer, not back until beginning of September. Nine weeks of school holidays, eek! I hope the weather gets better, it's really cold here at the moment, doesn't feel like June at all . Won't have much time to fit in the gym so it might be a good idea to fit my exercise DVD or run in first thing every day before dh goes to work. Diet-wise I've completely blown it again, have been eating out a lot due to family birthdays etc and haven't lost any weight this week at all, have put on at least a pound. Need to start following Slimming World again and stick to the menu-planning.

Hope you all have a nice day, happy exercising

3andnomore · 28/06/2007 14:54

Speedy, know what you mean about carbs...I find if I don't eat wheat and not to much pasta my stomoch really flattens almost overnight, just amazing.
Laloop...yes, those long long holidays in NI...9 weeks is far to long, isn't it....my son got bored after a few weeks. Glad you are feeling better though. About the carrying, have you considered a Ringsling ( I love mine and still occasionally use it for my 4 1/2 or almost 3 year old sumowrestler, lol) or one of those hipseats , takes the strain from your back!

Well, I did Kathy Smith's Lower Body workout from the Body sculpting DVD this morning and thte Tae Bo everybody get ripped 8 minute workout and liked both very much!
Now a question to those in the know, lol....Kathy Smith's Lower Body Workout has no cardio in it, am now wondering will I be better of doing a short and tough Cardio workout with it ,like a Tae Bo 8 minute one and would I be better off doing it before hand or afterwards or would it be better to add my own cardio Intervals ala Davina to Kathy Smith's workout, i.e. every few rounds pause the DVD and do a minute of Jumping Jacks, running on teh spot, etc.... what is better and more effective?
Also, will just lifting weights or doing leg exercises, etc....be as beneficial as if you join them up with some cardio?

Another question, if I ever get back into at least doing some short workout in the evening, I may well only be able to do one or the other (i.e. cardio or resistence)...what would work to the best advantage for me to keep my Metabolism going? Or does it not really matter...because well, cardio of course is fat burning and get the metabolism going, but then resitence training would build musle and musle uses more energy, etc....!
I am not sure if I explained that at all well, lol! But hopefully someone can work out what I am trying to say

So, how is everyone else going?

Theodorsmum have the DVD's come yet, have you done any yet, what ya think?

3andnomore · 28/06/2007 16:41

Just wondering...has anyone used these are they any good? The idea seems quite brilliant!

OrmIrian · 28/06/2007 17:49

Carbs are a problem for me. I'm sort of moving from low-carb to lower-carb-minus wheat-and-processed-food atm. Precisely because I bloat and get cramps and wind that can kill at 100 paces whenever I try to eat pasta or bread. On Atkins I was entirely free of it but I guess I'm getting bored of that now and it has become clear to me that wheat is the problem.

I am going for a run in a minute and I am actually really looking forward to it! I am so enjoying my runs these days - I think it comes from being able to run far enough to vary my routes and try new ones each time.

3andnomore · 28/06/2007 19:57

Orm, funny you should say that, because it was the Atkins phase of my life where I realised that especially wheat caused my bloating, etc...so, it was not time wasted. I did, in the past, do food combining (Kensington Diet)and with that one I found out that if I ate wheat without protein it wasn't all that bad....I suppose that was why I also liked Slimming World...must admit, even though I do like my WW class, if there was a SW one in walking distance I would probably go back to that., hohum!
Glad you enjoy your runs Must admit, after all that I have been saying about not liking to run, today when I walked to the shops, I really felt like running (rather unusual, lol)....so, maybe once dh is in a more regular hours job, maybe I will take running up, afterall...queerer things have happened, I suppose, lol!

Well....we just had a lovely BBQ and well, I did have some Bratwursts and even one BUrger, no bun, but mainly had salad and lovely Chicken/veggie kebabs (had marinated the chicken since this morning in yummy honey, lemon, yoghurt, soya sauce, koriander and garlic marinade...yum!
Also having naughty wine right now...but dh is working again all over the weekend, so, this is our weekend-night treat, lol, iykwim....!
Rambling, I know....so, how is everyone else getting on then?

speedymama · 28/06/2007 23:12

I went for a 2 mile run followed by 15 minutes on exercise bike followed by one hour of Taebo Ultimate Bootcamp. To say I was exhausted afterwards would be an understatement. That Bootcamp DVD is really hard, especially when you have done 35 minutes of cardio before hand. The toning exercises are just so intense. Billy works the muscles until failure and I cannot complete the sets. I'm OK for the first set, second set I do 1 rep, skip 1 etc and by the third set, I'm lucky if I manage 3 reps.

DH is back tomorrow evening so I'll just do Davina's The Pump in the morning as it is only 30 minutes long.

Keep up the good work everyone and if possible, cut down on the wheat. I'm amazed at how flatter my tummy is just by me reducing the amount of bread and pasta I consume. I've been overdosing on Cous-cous so time for me to mix it up. Brown rice here I come!

Lorns · 29/06/2007 14:01

Hi speedy - well done on thee xercise front but plese bear in mind that you had already done a 2 mile run, the exercise bike and then (i'm guessing) some of the workout before you hit the reps.. Your body would have been very tired!

3annomore - I've looked at the weights and the only problem I could forsee is that if the weights were not full of water (5lbs) then the water would slosh around and therefore make the weight unevenly distributed. I guess it's suck it and see! It does sound like a good idea - and one I might use for P/Training if it worked...

In answer to your q about cardio and weights. Ideally you should be exercising for 20 minutes minimum to see cardio results - and then at an intensity which ensures you are puffed. You can combine cardio and weights - you can do interval training you can do just a good weights or cardio workout.

It is good to add variety to your workouts as this keeps the body guessing! Try and get a good mix over a week between strength, cardio and stretching. Resistance exercises can be done from a quick ab blast for 5 minutes to 55 minutes on each part of the body.

A word to fellow exercise buddies:-

Exercising intensly for over an hour is not necessary to get good results, unless you are in training for an event. If you go over the 2 hours a day then you will get injured as your body will be tired and you may be getting a bit obsessive!

For those who struggle to exercise for 20 minutes continuously. Just start small and gradually build up.

A good model to follow re exercise is FITT. FREQUENCY (3-5 times a week) INTENSITY (how hard you work) TYPE (Strength, cardio, stretch) and TIME (aim for 20 minutes+)

Hope this helps

3andnomore · 29/06/2007 14:38

Firstly...wow speedy....that sounds punishing, lol! BUt well done you for getting through it!

Lorns thanks for you advice...! And not sure if I will give those weights a try, or if I buy some other "normal" weights. I have, at the moment got 2x0.5Ibs, 2x2Ibs..., so, might get some 2KG ones for now....or would that be to heavy? Maybe I find a set with several weights to built up. Is there a upper limit at all, i.e. as a woman you shouldn't use weights higher then [insert weight]...! Obviously I know that you have to be careful and don't use to heavy weights, i.e. you shouldn't need to swing them etc...to be able to move them at all, lol...!

Well...not done anything yet today, exercise wise, but will do something later....just not sure what....might do Davina again, or maybe Kate's Cardio Combat...hm...!

Oh another question coming....what is teh theory behind the resting days? i.e some people say it's not good to exercise everyday...?

laloop · 29/06/2007 18:23

Hi everyone

No exercise for me today as dc's finished school early. We're out to a family birthday meal tonight - because there are a lot of us going we've pre-ordered and I've stuck to sensible choices, soup as a starter and mussels as a main course with a side order of steamed veg (was drooling at the the thought of garlic potatoes but resisted). Might have a couple of glasses of wine but won't be going mad, promise! Dh is out mountain-climbing tomorrow so will he'll be away from early morning, and hangovers and small children just do not mix so that'll keep me on the straight and narrow

I bought some new scales today, these ones here. They give BMI, body H2O levels and body fat % as well as weight. I've decided to focus on lowering my body fat percentage as a challenge over the summer through when I hopped on them as they're not as kind as my old scales . The last couple of weeks of eating/snacking/little exercise has brought me back to the upper limit of my healthy BMI. My body fat is also coming up as too high, it's around 30% !!! So it'll be interesting trying to reduce the fat/muscle ratio, more exciting than watching the scales go up and down their usual half stone fluctuation with me!

We're heading to the west of Ireland for a week on Sunday so I need an exercise plan that will include running and cycling. I think there's a gym at the hotel we're at for a couple of nights so maybe some weights too. What's the best way of increasing the muscle to fat ratio? Think I'm maybe doing too much cardio work so I'm fit as far as running etc goes but need toned up a lot!

Keep up the exercising, girls GO for it!

3andnomore · 29/06/2007 19:54

laloop...don't think I want toknow my Bodyfat ratio, etc....lol....far to scary, lol!
I wonder how they read things like Bodyfat, etc...anyway, i.e. how accuarte are they?I assume they don't just calculate it like BMI, do they? Because that calculation really is a bit rubbish, isn't it...I mean, it doesn't take into account musclemass or sex...hm.....!
I suppose the best way to build muscle is weight training isn't it?

Well, I did one of those 10best workouts DVD's the Kick Butt one, and I must say I really enjoyed it....it's of course not as good as Tae Bo, but it does include some weight training which is good...it's a 45 minute workout and had a really good cool down section, too....!

laloop · 30/06/2007 11:43

Lol 3anm, not sure how the scales calculate the body fat % or how accurate they are - there are sensors to stand on and you have to programme in data such as your height and sex.

I had a few glasses of red wine last night so I am sitting here with a sore head despite my good intentions. Think it must be an age thing, I can't have 2 glasses or more without suffering now!

Would love to do an exercise DVD this morning but feeling too ropey still...

3andnomore · 30/06/2007 12:02

informative site

just calculated my bodyfat there...frustrated me a bit....lol....as it classed me as high...sigh....not tall enough for my waistline, lol.....!
Of course my BMI came out as perfectly o.k and in the healthy range....hohum!

Lol Laloop at you not being able to drink much without feeling rough...poor thing....!
Well, I woke up wiht a Urine Infection and must say I feel a bit rotten, and sadly I will have to go out shopping and I have to walk, because dh needed to take the car, sigh....in this weather not an appealing thought, sigh!
Not sure I will do exercise...think I would end up like peeing myself the whole time, lol! Might do my Yoga one, just to do something.

laloop · 30/06/2007 12:19

Hope you feel better soon, 3anm, sorry that you're feeling ill.

speedymama · 01/07/2007 12:41

Hi everyone

Just quickly popping in to say that I ran 3 miles this morning and then walked 2 miles each way to Church where the boys attend Sunday School.

Plan to do some stretching this afternoon as well as relax.

Hope you feel better soon 3anm.

speedy you are doing so well.
Well, still have some cystitis left over, grrr....and the over counter stuff helps but makes me feel so sick, I even puked so made a GP appointment, as I need to get rid of this, got a Job interview tomorrw...not a great look the crosslegged or jumping from one foot to the other-one, lol!
Apparently all teh stuff in tablet form for Cystitis is prescription only, sigh....and really can't face drinking anymore of that sachet and bvottle stuff, the thought alone makes me go queezey! Urineinfection isn't actually that bad anymore, and if it wasn't for the Interview tomorrw, I wouldn't bother!
Obviously didn't get any Exercise in, sigh...hopefully get some done later.
How is everybody else doing?

speedymama · 02/07/2007 11:03

Hope you feel better soon 3anm.

Based on your reviews, I have just ordered Jason Vale's Slim for life book. I'm always keen to gather different perspectives about healthy eating.

I won't be able to do any formal exercise today but hoping to go for a brisk walk at lunch time.

OP posts:
3andnomore · 02/07/2007 12:11

Just back from the Dr's and got a course of AB's...didn't really want to do down that lane, but, well...what with teh INterview coming up, didn't want to risk anything neither, lol!
Speedy, hope you will like the Book IMO he does talk a lot of sense...dispite the fact that he was slagged of on Extreme skinny celebraty mums programme...but then, it did show to anyone who has looked into it a bit more and actually read his books that they didn't actually know anything about it. Well, in the same programme the good old myth that breastfeeding mothers must eat and drink properly was spouted, too (now, not that I endorse starvation diet for breastfeeding mothers, of course....but you get the drift, lol)

3andnomore · 02/07/2007 17:14

just done the 2, Kick Butt workout, and it was o.k....first one was better...but I will defiantely do it again...when I am in a Tae Bo mood but not energetic enough to do tae bo these 2 workouts will come in handy

3andnomore · 03/07/2007 15:19

Hi, done Davina "the Pump" and "the core" workout this morning....blinking Kids decided to wake up at 5.30am...so...not as much peace as I should have had at that early hour...Kids...sigh!
Had my Interview earlier (First Aider Job) so, waiting to hear from them...after the Interview I was told that I was still a firm contestent to get it...so, that was positive...but I was the first one in, lol....!
Anyway, what have you all been up too?

OrmIrian · 03/07/2007 17:02

Ooh interview - I must have been asleep as I didn't know about that 3and! Good luck!
