New threads ladies!

OP posts:

Hi everyone

I lost the thread there for a few days but have managed to find you all again! Hope you feel better soon, 3anm. Fedda and sammac, keep up the good work. Hi Lorns. I haven't had a chance to get to the gym for the last week or so. DS2 had a cold and then developed croup so he has been miserable especially during the night. He seems a bit better now thankfully. I'm back into the healthy eating again, trying to shift the few lbs I put on during the summer. But I am NOT dieting...have decided that diets and me just do not mix as my inner rebel just kicks in and then I go mad on 'forbidden' foods when I get the chance. So I'm just being sensible, upping the fruit and veg, cutting back on the wine and drinking more water. Have joined the "lose a stone" thread for motivation too. (Lorns, one of the girls on there was asking about safe exercise if suffering from SPD, she's a regular gymgoer...do you have any suggestions/advice?).

Have a good weekend everyone, laloop x

fedda · 09/10/2007 23:08

I like your plan, laloop. i think the very word diet makes us rebel sometimes so may be we could think of some strateggies rather then diet plans. I'm also trying to include more fruit and veg although 10 is not always possible unless i can 'cheat' - have 2 apples as 2 fruit and 2 avocados as 2 veg and so on. I'm trying to maintain my dancing for 20 minutes a day and from time to time sweeping the leaves which I cheakily call my excersise.

laloupgarou · 10/10/2007 09:24

Sweeping leaves is exercise, fedda! And you're getting fresh air too, it's all good. I've been focusing on making small changes to my daily habits. I just can't do drastic measures, I must be a creature of habit, lol. So the small changes I have made are (not including yesterday when tiredness due to ill dc's upset the routine!):

  • skimmed milk rather than semi-skimmed
  • low-fat lurpak butter rather than full-fat (tastes just as good!)
  • a couple of slices of Nimble wholemeal rather than half of a white baguette, lol
  • fruit for snacks rather than biscuits
  • veggie based meals whenever possible
  • lots of water, glug glug
  • no wine during the week
  • exercise regularly (although this has been difficult at the moment, dc's all had colds and poor wee ds2 had croup).

Keep up the good work. Hi to sammac, lorns and 3anm too. Hope you're feeling better 3anm x

Lorns · 10/10/2007 09:36

Hi everyone! Laloop - so pleased that you are giving up "dieting". Cutting back and not having alcolhol during the week is good (together with exercise when DC are ok)! Sorry to hear about the croup etc. One of my neighbours DS has had croup - not nice .

Laloop I will look on that thread and try and advice the girl when I have time .

btw is everyone happy for this thread to continue as numbers have dwindled in the last few months?

Better go now as DS3 has walked into the room covered in hair gel.... !

laloupgarou · 10/10/2007 10:01

Hi Lorns, lol about hair gel, I remenber ds2 doing the samw with the contents of my make-up bag. It has been quiet round here, we need some new recruits!

laloupgarou · 10/10/2007 10:02

What has happened to my typing...excuse the typos in that last post

fedda · 10/10/2007 11:24

Join the club, laloupgarou.

laloupgarou · 10/10/2007 13:19

Heading out soon on the joys of the school run. Lorns, if you get a chance to look at the other thread, thanks that would be great(it's the one where we're trying to lose a stone in six weeks through healthy eating and exercise!). Another poster has MS which affects her lower body mobility, she was also looking some exercise advice. I had suggested handweights but maybe you have more suggestions? Thanks again

laloupgarou · 10/10/2007 13:23

Here's the link, laloop x

fedda · 11/10/2007 22:29

How is everyone?

fedda · 14/10/2007 22:46

What happened with everyone? All the other threads seem to be active. I'm missing ours.

tatt · 16/10/2007 20:52

so I've just joined a gym - but the induction was very brief and little more than where the on swiches were. Anyone any suggestions for how someone with a bad back and a foot problem that means running is out manages to exercise? I can't afford to have to fork out for a personal trainer on top of the gym fees.

I'm very out of condition so has to be a gradual start - can't do more than a few minutes on the cross trainer.

Also any gym etiquette I should be aware of?

I dehydrate very easily and have been told that this can lead to weight gain - anyone know if that's true?

laloupgarou · 17/10/2007 09:58

That's a shame that the induction was so brief, tatt. When I went for my induction at new gym it was a proper consultation with questionnaire to fill in, weight, height etc and then a workout designed to suit my needs plus a demonstration of how all the equipment works.

Would you have to pay if you saw one of the trainers again? Could you check at the gym reception and explain that you have back/foot problems and would be keen for advice on a safe and effective workout plan. Maybe they could organise a further induction session?

I don't have any fitness qualifications so I may not be best person to give advice! But as another gym-goer I would suggest the pool if there is one at the gym, swimming would maybe ok? Also could try walking on treadmill and gradually increasing time on cross-trainer. Definitely think the gym staff should give you more advice though, I would speak with them again.

tatt · 17/10/2007 15:08

they said they'd show me how to use the weights if I wanted but they don't seem to see themselves as having any role in offering advice, they are mainly lifeguards for the pool. When I asked they just suggested the cross trainer would work every muscle in the body.

I have had blood pressure/lung capacity/stamina checked recently and there is a set of scales in the gym. Guess I'll see what books the library has/ what websites I can find.

bethoo · 18/10/2007 11:43

started trainign again as the gym over the road lets you take babies in and it is rather quiet at the moment as the regiment is in Iraq. having nice eye candy i find is always a good motivator! but that is not the reason i go i assure you! since i am on a time frame before little man gets bored and starts screaming blue murder i do a quick 20 - 30 mins CV then some machine weights. but i am lucky in that i cant drive so i walk my two dogs before breakfast then walk baby to childminder then walk to work then after work go to pick little man up then walk home then walk back across again to the gym! i must walk bloody miles!

ivykaty44 · 19/10/2007 21:15

tatt, take a look at this www.exrx.net/FatLoss/WT%26End.html

It explains why doing resistance/weights aswell as CV is going to shift the weight. So doing 15 mins CV and then 15 mins weights will shift the weight better than just doing 30 mins CV.

You must have a rest between weights so doing 5 upper body weights one day and then 5 lower body weights the next session is a good idea as your muscles need the time to repair and grow otherwise if you dont let them rest you will not allow them to repair and grow. Plus you must feed them - eating after your work out some protien and carbs is a good idea.

A pound of muscle uses 106 calories in 24 hours a pound of fat uses 5 calories in 24 hours

So get them to show you how to use the machines - start with perhaps 5 machines at first and a low weight, move the weights slowly, about 10 seconds one way and 14/15 seconds back - this will build the muscle you want to tone up.

tatt · 19/10/2007 22:08

Last night there were several people using weights so I watched. Guess that probably isn't considered polite but I only did it when stopping for a drink and watched from a distance.

Had a go with one machine that works on leg muscles, using very light weights - it was a nice rest .

Problem is all my muscles need toning up and at the moment it has to be very gentle.

I was starving when I got back from the gym.

tatt · 19/10/2007 22:08

p.s. thanks for that website.

ivykaty44 · 19/10/2007 22:32

Hi

I started of with 15 kilos at the begining of September, now I am using 35 kilos. I do 10 reps twice.

www.weightlossforall.com/exercise-recovery-important.htm

Also take a look at this HIIT, I stumbled across this in a book in waterstones and came home and googled it -

www.davedraper.com/article-124-spring-interval-training.html

makes sense really hope this helps

tatt · 19/10/2007 23:08

during half term I'm going to find it hard to get to the sym at all. But the kids are old enough to be left for an hour so I'll manage it somehow.

I quite like this website, that I found when trying to work out what to go for next www.brianmac.co.uk/weight.htm

I'm going to ask someone to show me how to work some of the weight machines, they look like fun. I quite like rowing too - nice machine that shows how many calories I'm burning .

fedda · 23/10/2007 14:33

Nice website, thank you.

fedda · 27/10/2007 13:14

i've been sweeping the leaves today. Good excersise considering how many I had (I hope).
How are you all? Any news?
