Anyone looking to lose 100lbs plus... - Part 4

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 13/03/2018 21:12

Hello, welcome to the fourth instalment of the ‘Anyone looking to lose 100lbs plus …’ thread Smile

If you want to read them (but by no means feel obliged!), the previous threads are here: Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3

We’re a very friendly, supportive group, and I think we’re all seeing some real changes in ourselves and our attitudes to food. It’s a long old road, but it helps to chat along the way

Collectively, we’ve lost 869 lbs since the start of the first thread, which is pretty amazing! Grin

We tend to weigh in on Fridays or Saturdays, but feel free to join in at any time, with whatever weight loss method you think works best for you. Some of us have lost more than others, but we're all in this together, so if you're losing, gaining or staying the same, it's nice to have some inspiration to keep going.

We’re always welcoming to newcomers, but as with the previous thread(s), I’ll add one caveat - we’re all here because we are trying to lose a LOT of weight. If you’re looking to lose the last half stone, or even two or three stone, this might not be the thread for you. Good luck with your goals, but you may find more support with in threads with people who have similar goals to you.

Thanks Honey and Notanurse. I think maintenance is a good idea, as although I'm back on it, I'm not feeling in the zone.

fezzesarecool · 10/04/2018 09:11

Looking forward to Easter being over! Routines are completely out the window which is good for the kids but bad for the whole diet and exercise thing.

My dd’s having a lay in as we let her stay up playing last night but now I’m waiting on doing my exercises. I’d like to get the kids settled with a snack doing a activity while I exercise, they’ll join in with me too.

Nevermind, it means I’ve got time to catch up with housework while I wait.

On a side note dd made me so the Waybuloo yoga yesterday, it did not end well for me 🤣 so I may have to build yoga in too now

AnotherOtter · 10/04/2018 10:55

Slinking back in with a 2.4lb gain and that is after the water retention and glycogen bloat has gone as it was over 4lbs. Had two days of maintenance last week plus two days of grazing all day so well over even maintenance calories. According to MFP, I should have gained less than a pound but my dodgy metabolism obviously has other ideas. The two days grazing were not worth losing weeks of progress (as I am only losing weight pretty slowly now). Got another stressful week as Hotel Otter is open for the season again. I feel like I am back on the wagon as have three days eating as I planned under my belt. I am definitely finding dieting tougher and tougher as time goes on.

Well done on all the losses and KOKO to those that are struggling Thanks

fezzesarecool · 10/04/2018 12:03

Does anyone struggle to stop eating when they feel full?

I’ve just had 2 slices of whole toast but after the first slice was full but ate the second as it was there rather than think throw it away and then have a snack later

I don’t know why I do it!

I’ve started doing smaller servings eg 2 ham rolls but only making one, eating and then seeing if I want more and that’s helped to think about if I’m hungry or to wait for a bit

But I have a real problem with ‘having’ to finish what’s on my plate Any tips?

It’s not a big as in I’m within calories but I need to not just reconsie when I’m hungry but stop That way I can have a treat later in or add something on my plate

moonlight1705 · 10/04/2018 15:08

Oh goodness yes, that's my major problem. I once remember having a big blowout on McDonald's and then going home and eating a full meal because I didn't want my DH to know I had eaten so awfully.

In the end I guess the answer is to only make what you need and freeze things.

Would love to know the answer to this!

fezzesarecool · 10/04/2018 15:35

I suppose that’s why we’re all the in same boat now!

I had some malteasers the other night and again, halfway though I had enough but I ate the whole packet. So buying fun size bags from now on.

I guess the only answer right now is a smaller than the portion control portion and then have the option of having seconds.

Feel very stupid not being able to leave my plate if I’m full

nicknamehelp · 10/04/2018 15:43

Hi everyone. I need to loose 100 plus. Been putting off starting as my health was suffering while waiting for an op but had op now so time to get started.

I cant decide between calorie counting on my own (hopefully with your support) or slimming world- advice appreciated.

Im looking forward once recovered to getting active again.

fezzesarecool · 10/04/2018 16:22

Welcome Nick

Everyone’s doing different things on here I’m doing calorie counting but lots of good results from the slimming world people too I think some do a bit of both as well

I’m liking calorie counting as for me nothing’s off limits as long as I stay within calories and if I go over I can balance it out

The best advice I’ve had on here is to use the my fitness pal app

Everyone on here’s really supportive and hopefully they’ll be other’s poping on soon that can help you decide what to try

Cultofpersonality · 10/04/2018 16:32

Welcome nick!

Small NSV today, someone at work asked me if I’d lost weight. Trying to, was my reply, she told me you could tell!

Have started swimming, on top of walking basically everywhere.
Started on Sunday, and have plans to go every day this week. Only stayed for 20 minutes because it’s been so busy. Hoping to stay longer as it gets quieter with the kids going back to school!

nicknamehelp · 10/04/2018 17:57

I've installed my fittness pal and completed it for today just need to keep this up - where I go wrong I stop recording after a few days and "forget" Im on a dietHmm

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 10/04/2018 19:15

Welcome nick! I've found that having a reminder on my phone go off each evening helps me log in each day and log what I've eaten. I have been known to take photos of my lunch to remind me exactly what I had. It's better once you've built up a series of meals in mfp, makes it much easier to log.

I found a little bit of inspiration for you all - Link to BBC story Hayley is competing in the Commonwealth Games, and has won a bronze....7 years ago, she was 7 stone heavier! Wow. That could be us.

I'm dashing out again now, but staying on track this week. Unexpected period is not helping, but I'm making good choices. KOKO everyone!

Well nick Sorry not kept up the last few days.
I really regret not sticking with mfp when I installed it in Oct 15. Back than I was 14stone 8. Lost two stone but after Christmasjust gone ended up at 16 stone. Think I will be using mfp for life now as fed up of yo yo dieting.

Moonandstars84 · 10/04/2018 20:30

Welcome nick and welcome back breaking

honeysucklejasmine · 11/04/2018 12:23

Hi Nick. I've done both SW and cc so here's my two pennies.

It depends on what your problem is. Mine is portion control and will power. With SW, you don't have to control portions. Some foods are totally free, and you are encouraged to have a big plateful. Other food (like flour containing products) are so high in syns they may as well be banned. So it's quite high on the good food Vs bad food ideology too.

Cc doesn't have an innate sense of good and bad. I could spend my whole calorie allowance on chocolate if I wanted to. However, it does teach you what's actually in food, and I find myself along judgement calls - a small bar of chocolate Vs much more of something much lower calorie. I still eat crisps, but low calorie ones. I can eat a pizza if I want without completely blowing the plan, as long as I stay within my limit. (You don't get much pizza for 15 syns, I can tell you)

So, post slimming world. Yes, I lost weight. But I was still accustomed to huge portions so as soon as I stopped following it, I gained weight again. After all, SW is a business and what good is a business that gradually reduces it's customer base?

I'm cc this time. The weight is coming off pretty fast still (2lbs a week ish) and I don't feel deprived. In fact, I have often struggled to use my allowance up every day. I make healthier swaps to maximise what I can have, and to balance out my carbs:fat:protein ratios for the day.

TLDR: I prefer cc because it changes habits, and educates you about food.

nicknamehelp · 11/04/2018 17:31

Honey thanks for your view.

I think for now I'm going to do cc and rely on support from here and see how we go.

Nobeachbody · 11/04/2018 18:28

HI Nick and welcome.
For what it's worth, I get the rage with Slimming World and their bloody "Syns". I find it intensely irritating that a) they feel they have to spell it incorrectly, cap it up and trademark it, FGS, and b) that they are categorising any food as a "SYN" however you want to spell it.

No food is really good or bad, it's just food, so I hate all that "naughty but nice" crap. I think putting value judgements on food is half the problem, and exacerbates that black and white thinking that jinxes so much of us when battling with our weight.

On the other hand it has been proven that slimming clubs have more success than going it alone, though you could argue that by joining in this thread you will get loads more support, help and advice than some old fashioned slimming club. Though I guess I'm biased against slimming clubs as , I went to WW a few years ago, and was simply appalled (and silently agog) at the way the "leader" spoke to the assembled fatties (me included). She said that as it was coming up to Bonfire night, we should imagine that for every pound we lost, it was a leaf, and we should draw a leaf, cut it out, and stick it on the window to show everyone how much weight (leavesl) we'd lost. And then we'd have a big bonfire of all the "leaves" we had shed. I was speechless, tbh, I mean FFS, we were not a bunch of five year olds. Strangely enough, I didn't bother going back. Grin

nicknamehelp · 11/04/2018 18:39

No beachbody - I know what you mean. I've been to slimming clubs befote and they can be very patronising! I just struggle with self control.

Dat 2 of using mpg and I've stuck to it Smile.

honeysucklejasmine · 11/04/2018 20:46

Well done nick. One day at a time.

I had lentil Bolognese for dinner. Fuck me it was tasty. I took the ketchup option and that gave it a lovely sweet background. I didn't out wine in because I don't have any red in thats cheap enough to waste in Bolognese so used water, about 500ml total though I added it gradually during cooking, a la risotto.

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 11/04/2018 21:01

Welcome nick.

I made a massive error this evening - bought a fish yesterday (whole trout, in the polystyrene tray) - in my usual supermarket, this means it has been gutted, so you can just wrap it up in foil and stuck it in the oven. Got it out the fridge tonight and this one had not been gutted Envy. I don't have the fishmongery skills to de-gut it and I'm not normally a squeamish person at all, but the idea of it made me cringe. So it is back in the fridge until I work out what I'm going to do with it Blush....

And with that exciting glimpse into my life, I'm off to bed with my book Grin. KOKO everyone!

Anyone else in the house you can palm the job off to tractors? A teenager who's been watching MasterChef or a partner who reckons they can cook?

I just had a slice of toast and peanut butter. It pushed me over my limit by 66 cals but it was totes worth it.

fezzesarecool · 12/04/2018 08:04

Got some stuff going on this morning and may need moral support not to ‘comfort’ eat if I dont get the outcome I want

nicknamehelp · 12/04/2018 08:41

YouTube or bin!!! I couldn't do it.

AnotherOtter · 12/04/2018 11:11

How are you doing with maintenance, Breaking? I had week of maintenance a wee while back and found it helpful. I hadn't really realised quite how much stress having a calorie deficit puts on your body and emotional load. Hope things are improving for you Thanks

Honey, how are you getting on with the bastard mirena? It was conventional wisdom that the progestogen released only had local effects so there were no systemic side-effects. A very good, over one million participants, Danish study showed that the mirena triples your risk of depression (NY Times article: mobile.nytimes.com/2016/09/30/well/live/contraceptives-tied-to-depression-risk.html and study here: jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapsychiatry/fullarticle/2552796 sorry for long links!). If it affects mood then seems reasonable that it's possible that it affects weight loss. How are you finding things now?

Fezzes, I definitely struggle with stopping eating when I feel full. Part of that is due to dieting as my brain is well aware that there will be restriction in the near future so eat now while you have the chance! I also used to have binge eating disorder and bulimia (at different times) and will binge to control my mood which mostly doesn't work but sometimes does actually soothe something. The psychologist I saw told me over and over that restriction causes binges. Dieting is a socially acceptable form of mild (or not so mild with crash dieting) restriction. So I feel I am playing with fire by dieting but needs must. One thing I have noticed is that my hunger varies over time and especially with my menstrual cycle. So I try to tell myself to be flexible and wait it out.

Welcome Nickname. You've had some great advice already about calorie counting that I second. How are you getting on?

Well done with the NSV and the exercise, Cult.

How about youtube for videos on how to gut a fish, Tractors? It's not hard with good guidance but if you have an outside tap then doing it in the garden can be a good idea to reduce the clean up. Good luck!
