Common Sense Eating

SouthernNorthernGirl · 11/02/2017 13:32

I wanted to start a thread about eating sensibly / healthily etc without any diet fads involved.
Would love a bit of support in this, and I'm sure there are others that feel the same.

I really need to bite the bullet and join in with you. I low carbed for almost two years and lost a staggering 3.5 stone, but I pretty much gave up on my 50th birthday last October and put back over 1.5 of that. This also partly due to the fact we lost our beloved border terrier just after Christmas and the combination of low mood and lack of excercise from no longer having a dog to walk has been catastrophic. We now have an almost 11 week old puppy and I'm starting to build up to taking her on three times a day walks by carrying her out and about on socialisation sessions. Only about two pairs of the size 14 jeans I bought after losing the weight now fit me and I feel like shit Sad

I can't face doing low carb again, I got sooo sick of eggs for one thing and as I can't stomach savoury for breakfast I was struggling to find something I did like that wasn't an 'inventive' bread/cake/pastry substitute (ground almond pancakes, milled flax muffins etc). I want to eat normal food, in sensible quantities and preferably without snacking unless properly hungry. I came across the website How to Eat Like a Normal Person before I lost my little dog and it changed my way of thinking about food, but my depression hit me so hard that I couldn't implement the suggestions and I have had no will power. Add in a history of binge eating and it's no wonder my weight has soared. Saturday evening was an extreme low point. I had a pot of candyfloss, a large bag of marshmallows, half a large bar of chocolate and two tubes of giant Parma Violet sweets within about two hours and I could still have had more if there had been anything else.

In concluding this essay, for breakfast I have had a bowl of overnight-soaked oatmeal made with water, topped off a with large spoonful of no-sugar peanut butter and a splash of cream. I feel full and don't want anything else at present. I may have one chocolate biscuit with a cup of filter coffee now then lunch will probably be bacon, eggs and mushrooms. Not sure yet about dinner.

Thank you to anyone who managed to wade through this boring monologue and to everyone posting positivity on this thread Flowers

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog Owlish. Losing a dog is just terrible Flowers. I don't blame you for not wanting to do low carb, it seems to make everything such a struggle. Now that Spring is coming, you can get out and about with your lovely new pup and start enjoying walks again.

Lilyben I can only repeat all the sensible things Sub says. Be kind to yourself and take things one step at a time. You CAN do this.

I'm not weighing myself today as I'm on my period and feel like I'm carrying enough fluid to rehydrate the Sahara. I'll be back on the scales next Tuesday.

Well done everyone for getting through another week Star

Oops sorry for the double post!

Saltedcaramel2016 · 21/02/2017 13:51

Oooh can I join too?!

Am 5ft7 but can't follow diets at all so am just going to try and eat sensibly and do more exercise. Last time I weighted myself at the gym (on 02/02/2017) I was 11st1lb and I would love to be around 9st7lb.

Am planning on swimming tonight so will weigh myself then. It is doubtful I will be any lighter than I was before due to a weekend of indulgence! However, I intend to be very sensible in the week but then let myself have a few treats at the weekend.

I started logging food and exercise into MFP yesterday!

I have a really bad sweet tooth and eat junk when I feel stressed or bored!

Lilybensmum1 · 21/02/2017 15:02

Thank you everyone for your kind messages it really helps, I guess I try to do everything all at once and when I inevitably fail I just think what's the point? Will look at those yoga videos and try to think about what I'm eating, I like the idea of sensible eating so nothing is banned. Will try again tomorrow.

Thank you again everyone you really are lovely Flowers.

howthefuckshouldiknow · 21/02/2017 16:06

Hello, can I join you please? I'm just 5ft and 11 st 6. I'm a terrible secret junk food eater and I've got to stop. I sometimes low carb but it never lasts more than a couple of days and probably does more harm than good. I'm hoping that by logging in here I can just eat normally and stay on track.
I can't possibly list today's intake Blush but will start tomorrow. I'm also very unfit; can anyone recommend a YouTube exercise vid that's for beginners please ? Feeling really ashamed today 🙁

KlingybunFistelvase · 21/02/2017 17:27

Hi new posters! Smile

I am going to start tracking on mfp properly tomorrow. Has anyone got any tips for tracking accurately when you cook from scratch? I've been finding this really hard. Not sure what the answer is.

Everyone seems to be doing really well!

CashelGirl · 21/02/2017 18:22

Hello all. I lost 500g (which I think is a couple of pounds) and 4cm from round my waist! All been going well - only low point was eating a tube of mini eggs that my MIL has sent round for the kids. Shame!

Owlish · 21/02/2017 19:09

Klingy when using MFP, don't rely too much on the information about calories, macros etc already provided, as many of them are either wrong because they've been entered wrongly by users or they may be American products. I'd rely more on the packaging of the product i.e. enter the brand name if possible, even supermarket own-brands are on there. So if you buy Tesco Finest breaded ham, for example, don't just search for 'ham', use the full item description. A useful feature of MFP is being able to scan a barcode of the item you're looking for. Good luck Smile

Hello all! Some may remember me from last week.. I said I was going to start officially on Monday but with DP off we took a trip to Greenwich park and stopped for lunch which was cottage pie followed by cake! We did a lot of walking though!

Anyway I am still 12.4 so really pleased that I haven't put any weight on! And today my head is in the game!:

B: Alpen no sugar muesli with skimmed milk
S: skinny latte and nakd bar
L: bagel with peanut butter
D: hache steak with sweet potato, asparagus and side salad + tsp mayo (making up for lack of veg throughout day!)

I am feeling peckish now though so may have one of DP's protein shakes mixed with skimmed milk. Cherry bakewell flavour! Not to keen on the idea of protein shakes but I have had a long day and could do with a satisfying yet syn free treat. However may just settle for a large tea!

Thanks for tips regarding whether yoga and hiit was too much. Someone suggested to not make a goal of doing it every day but to have a goal of doing something everyday which has definitely helped my mindset. Sorry I cannot remember who this was?!

Anyway I am really pleased with this suggestion because I have not managed a HIIT or yoga session today but I have however done just short of 2hrs walking so I think that counts for something!

Anyway glad to officially be on board with you all! When the kids are asleep I will try and catch up on the thread but looks like everyone is doing great and I am so pleased to see that this thread is still very active as are all you people ;)

justonesherryformedicinalpurpo · 21/02/2017 20:13

I never realise how long my posts are until I have posted! Sorry for the rambling although I can't say that means I will be able to stop rambling...

KlingybunFistelvase · 21/02/2017 20:18

Thanks owlish and sounds good justonesherry!

justonesherryformedicinalpurpo · 21/02/2017 20:41

luckycatclover I have heard of BBG Kayla Itsines. If you don't already then perhaps you should create an instagram account and search her because there are thousands of people that do her guides with amazing success and results and who have created account specifically to track their progress. Really motivating. I have actually downloaded them myself and paid for them and I did actually begin to do it but I think I was putting to much pressure on myself to do all three in a week and then I fell pregnant for the second time!

I have them saved to my phone now though and I'm hoping that when my baby stops whining long enough for me to workout then I will begin them.

It is tough btw but go at your own pace and remind yourself that it is only 28mins and you'll feel totally badass afterwards!

Submariner · 22/02/2017 07:00

Too many posts for me to answer, but loving the positivity and well done everyone who's lost weight, moved more or made steps to feel happier.

Had a lovely relaxing day off with the kids yesterday (half term here) and was so busy/chilled out that I didn't eat any snacks! This definitely makes me think that some of my problem is boredom between meals. I even walked in the kitchen to make a cuppa and thought 'what shall I eat?' and walked out empty handed.

Lush breakfast this morning - 2 egg omelette with cherry tomatoes and spinach and a slice of wholemeal bread. Yum yum. Pretty big so hoping it will last me till lunch.

luckycatclover · 22/02/2017 18:31

Justonesherry I've seen the instagram stuff, it is super motivating! Did you buy the PDF or the newer app version that's available now? I think if I enjoy it I might buy the app at the end of the course. Everyone I've spoken to says it's so tough! I'm a bit worried Grin sounds like a good plan too, at least doing it yourself means you can go a bit slower or have longer breaks if needed (I'll definitely need it in the first few weeks...)

Not had the best food day today as we went climbing with a friend and then to a man v food american style diner on the way home! I was quite pleased though that I only ate about half my burger and barely touched the chips, normally I'd just demolish it and eat it all without thinking if I even was still hungry/wanted it. And it made me want to get back to eating healthier meals again rather than making me think fuck it and eating more shite cos the damage is already done which is a bonus! Normally when I cheat on the diet I end up falling off majorly but I don't feel the urge to now so something in my mindset is getting better.

howthefuckshouldiknow · 22/02/2017 18:39

Today has been better than yesterday's shame fest
B: sugar free muesli skimmed milk
L: tuna and large salad
D: bacon egg mushroom beans ( all grilled no bread)
S: mini bounty probably an apple later
A mile walk to work and back is my only exercise at the mo, I'm just doing it as fast as I can and hope to start feeling fitter soon

justonesherryformedicinalpurpo · 22/02/2017 21:16

Luckycat I have the pdf version. I contemplated downloading the app recently but there were some bad reviews for android phones. I know that with the pdfs there is a 4 week guide to ease you into it so maybe give that a go first?

My day started well but the evening has ruined me. Damn my DP popping to the shops for mini cakes and crisps :(

B: porridge with egg cracked and mixed in before cooking, peanut butter and dash of sugar free maple style syrup
S: half protein bar
L: basic small portion of tuna risotto with a little cheese
S: apple and a boiled egg
D: simple thai red curry plus portion of egg noodles
S: mixture of junky bits sigh

Really struggling to see how I can do this without forcing DP to do the same?!

Howlongtillbedtime · 22/02/2017 21:57

I am here because I promised myself I would . Today I have mostly been not a piglet which is good .
And i made it to the gym which is also good .
Fingers crossed for another sensible day tomorrow .

Submariner · 22/02/2017 22:50

Ate an iced bun, and chips, and wine, and crisps.

Ah well. I did have a healthy dinner rather than continuing the trend.

Hi everyone! It's nice to see new people joining us!

Well done on your weight loss Star!

Feeling a bit fragile and I still haven't stepped back on the scale yet. Had an exceptionally beige food day yesterday 😕 According to myfitnesspal and the fitbit I am not eating more calories than I am expending, so it's not too bad.

Hope everyone is having a good week. Nearly the weekend! Does anyone have any exciting treats planned?

Kim82 · 23/02/2017 11:10

Can I join please? I have just weighed myself before getting into the shower and I am 13st 3lb which is far too big for my 5ft 2 frame. I have tried all kinds of diets in the past and have lost a stone then put it back on again so many times. I'm just going to try eating healthily with no set diet to follow.

Today I have had weetabix and banana for breakfast. For lunch I'll have ham salad on a whole meal roll and a yoghurt, dinner will be low fat sausages, mash and veg. I'll snack on fruit and drink tea, water or sugar free squash. Wish me luck!

justonesherryformedicinalpurpo · 23/02/2017 11:15

Woke up this morning and there were two french fancies left. DP offered me one but I resisted hurrah! It did help that they were chocolate ones though.. does anyone even like those?!

Anyway started the day with half a bagel with nut butter and a little sugar free syrup annnd I've just done one of Joe Wicks' (the body coach) HIIT workouts on youtube! It was soo hard but short and therefore manageable. However I did feel really lightheaded to the point of sitting during some of the rest periods. Not sure if this is normal but carried on once the spell was over regardless. Hoping this gets easier..

About to have a banana now as my post workout snack.

Have a positive day everyone!

flossisboss I have my godsons birthday party on sat and I know his gran will force me to eat some cake. Honestly she is relentless. And I think Sunday we'll venture out to a lovely local park so lots of walking involved. You?
