Common Sense Eating

SouthernNorthernGirl · 11/02/2017 13:32

I wanted to start a thread about eating sensibly / healthily etc without any diet fads involved.
Would love a bit of support in this, and I'm sure there are others that feel the same.

Good luck kim! Let us know how you get on.

justone I welcome French Fancies of all colours into my gob Blush

I really admire you doing the workouts. I really must start. I've got a Jillian Michaels DVD somewhere. I think it probably is normal to feel a bit light-headed starting out, but you're doing the right thing taking breaks.

I'm probably going to have an early Pancake Day with a friend tomorrow night, so looking forward to that.

flossisboss · 23/02/2017 12:12

I see Sainsburys have commandeered Pancake Day Hmm

flossisboss · 23/02/2017 12:12

I'm finding these links a bit alarming

neweymcnewname · 23/02/2017 17:17

Hello, can i come on board too please Smile? I'm trying to lose .5 to 1 stone, having steadily gained a little weight for the last 5 years. I've found that just lowering and counting calories doesn't seem to have much effect, and i'm starving all the time. But low carb worked well a couple of years back, so am trying that again, but mainly as healthy eating (lots of veg), and skipping the pasta, rice, bread. Like others, i find only buying what i should have helps (no cakes or bikkies!), and i'm not that keen on the other carbs, so they're ok to have in for my DS. I also have had to take lunch to work, as there's not much healthy stuff in canteen, but as that saves money, i'm treating myself to nicer ham, posh chilled soups etc., like a reward for eating healthier. Finally, for those who feel bad for eating whatever they fancy at a meal out, i think we should let ourselves off for special occasions, and just fully enjoy it. As long as it's not every couple of days, it seems kinder to just let those go, enjoy it, and hop back on the wagon the next day. Good luck everyone Smile!

neweymcnewname · 23/02/2017 17:18

My smiley faces turned into stars!

luckycatclover · 23/02/2017 19:12

Good to see other BBGers! I did the leg day today and it was painful. 😢 It honestly doesn't seem that bad written down but then after a few burpees and jump squats I'm done!!
Hope everyone's having a good day.

Submariner · 23/02/2017 22:22

Have been very well behaved all day to offset a lovely (and planned) meal out this evening. Definitely feeling more conscious of what I am eating and what my appetite is.

Stardust, I've got the PDFs, I can totally see how it'd get repetitive though! I might get the app after I've finished these (wishful thinking!) if I enjoy the workouts.

Don't worry about ranting! We deffo all have those days where you just eat everything in sight regardless of hunger or whether you even want it 😫 I know I do. Emotional eating is a tough one, the only way I sorta stopped was by forcing myself to rationalise that food wasn't going to fix it and recognising how temporary the fix was. but it's definitely easier said than done when a craving hits so you have my sympathy..
Hope tomorrow goes okay for you xx

flossisboss · 23/02/2017 23:39

Good luck for tomorrow Star, you'll be fine.

Totally agree with you lucky re rationalising yourself out of emotional eating. I try to remember that, although right now I feel rubbish and really want that chocolate/cake/bun, I know if I eat it I'll feel 10 times worse. It works 4 out of 5 times.

Not done so bad today -

B: Porridge
L: eggs on toast with tomatoes
S: apple
D: fishcake and a ton of broccoli

S: the obligatory Wispa bar

STILL not enough fruit and veg though Sad

Sweet dreams all Star

Submariner · 24/02/2017 09:12

Good luck stardust and be kind to yourself.

I agree on the emotional eating. It's got to the point where I know exactly what I'm doing and why, but I go ahead with it and just feel guilty. Blah. What a waste. Either eat it and enjoy it or don't eat it at all.

I shall have to find a different crutch. Maybe emotional knitting? I can stab things if it gets really bad! ;)

FillySucker · 24/02/2017 09:47

Hi ladies can I join you? I went to my NHS invited over 55 health check last night and as expected was informed that I need to lose some weight. I'm 5ft 4ins and weighed in at 12st 12lb. Carrying too much fat around my middle so my waist measurement is an awful 39 inches and was in the red band on her tape measure.

My cholestoral was good, blood sugar 8.2 so have to go back for another blood test as she thought that was too high. Blood pressure slightly above normal so they're going to check that again when I go back for the blood test. Sorry to bore you with all the detail, really just writing it down so that I don't forget what she said and can come back and refresh my memory.

I was offered a free 12 week membership to slimming world which I've accepted as have never joined anything like that and often wondered if it was any good. I'll give it a try and see if it suits me, though I really already know what my failing is - I eat too much! I don't think dieting is healthy, sensible eating is the best way to go I think.......if only I can be sensible!

I always cook from scratch, no take aways except for fish and chips once in a blue moon (no more than 3 or 4 times a year) and very little processed food. I rarely drink alcohol and never drink fizzy drinks (coke etc) as I hate the fizz.

I think my real problems are that I eat far too much and I love cake - which I'm always making for my DH and DC's lunch boxes. I'm also way too partial to chocolate and crisps, although I do try to limit these to Friday and Saturday nights, but will try to cut down to very small amount.

I'm aiming to lose 2 stone and see how things are then. This would give me a BMI of 26 and still leave me a little in the overweight range, but would be a big improvement on now.

Breakfast today was overnight oats -spoon sizes are desertspoon (rolled oats, 1 spoon sunflower seeds, 5 chopped brazil nuts, 2 chopped dates, 3 spoons fruit - redcurrents, blackcurrents and blueberries, 2 spoons plain yogurt) Off out for a walk when I've hung out the washing.

Thanks for reading Smile

justonesherryformedicinalpurpo · 24/02/2017 09:54

Morning all! Another junky evening for me but I do feel my mindset is changing as I haven't woke up and started on the biscuits like I normally would. I think this sunshine is helping a bit! Summer vibes!

Has anyone tried Joe Wicks' Lean in 15?

I've got his book on kindle and some of the recipes look nice. However I can't get my head around that I am only allowed one carby meal a day and thats only if I've worked out and it has to be after I've worked out too Hmm

Everyone is different and I honestly think that that I can't eat carb reduced meals all day except for the one after training. Maybe I should be but from past experience nothing fuels me better than carb. And i'm talking the good carbs as well.

I also do a fair bit of walking and I think that justifies carb!

Think I'll use some of his recipes but still stick to eating what I feel I need!

Happy Friday all!

Dowser · 24/02/2017 14:48

Just read your other thread but not all of this one.

I agree with flossi and chasing rainbows. I've just got a Fitbit and rejoined mfp.
I like its new format and it's so much easier to operate.
It's really good to see how many calories I burn and what my heart rate is.
I think sw is good for getting people motivated but I could never understand how all that free food worked.

Anyway they get results so good luck to them and if people find it helpful and get the weight off...even better.

Now I know what I burn I can make big adjustments in what I eat and I can aim to eat lower than I burn. At the end of the day it's not rocket science.

I'm still finding my way with this and flies in the face of everything I've done..
I know a pound of fat is 3,500 cals so to lose that amount a week I need to eat those calories less.

If I'm not burning up much then maybe 1750 calorie deficit a week may be more sustainable and half a pound of fat.

That's 2 lb of fat a month or 24 a year.
That's fat ..not water weight..so I could in effect lose more.

I've decided it's a marathon not a sprint. I don't need to lose 24 lbs so 10-12 lbs would do it.

I love waking up on a morning, checking my Fitbit and seeing I've already lost about 400 calories while I've been sleeping.
I had a stressful situation on Wednesday. Something that wasn't going to be resolved till 6pm

My resting heart rate just sitting is anywhere from 68 beats to 84 an hour.
It was 99 on Wednesday.
After my meeting it went down to 84.

No wonder they say stress is a killer. I knew that but got to see it with my own eyes.
Good luck op on whatever you choose to do.

Dowser · 24/02/2017 15:15

Good point owlish about mfp
I went over yesterday despite eating according to my calories.
I went back and checked the packaging and was able to reclaim 60 odd calories.

Welcome newbies, good news Stardust - now there's motivation for you!

I've been pretty good today, though like many of you I think I'm going to try and get more veg into my diet.

On a complete saddo note, I'm very pleased to have my washing out for the first time this year! What a blast of spring!

flossisboss · 24/02/2017 17:45

Hi everyone! Welcome to all the new people!

Star that's such a good boost to lose some weight! Glad you're feeling more positive.

Dowser that's a brilliant mantra - 'it's a marathon, not a sprint'. One of my biggest downfalls in the past has been impatience. 2lb a week seemed so slow and the weeks of restricted eating would stretch miserably ahead. When I didn't see dramatic results after a week or two of extreme dieting I'd just give up. Ironically, time actually flies by and I used to find myself looking back thinking 'If I'd only eaten sensibly and done some exercise for the past few months, instead of moaning, I could be down to my target weight by now.' That's why I've kind of given up on looking too far ahead. I just focus on one day, one week at a time.

Sub totally not saddo! I'm hoping to get some out at the weekend!

I'm having a pancake night tonight with a friend. Did lots of walking today and had lots of broccoli at lunchtime Halo

kneesupfatty · 25/02/2017 08:18

Yes, Dowser and Floss, I totally agree - impatience has been my downfall in the past too! This time, I've decided that half a pound a week is fine and, like you say, the weeks do fly by and it all quickly adds up.
I also agree with new that the secret of losing this weight for good is probably to be able to enjoy meals out / cake at parties etc...without any feelings of guilt and to then just get back to it the next day.
Filly - my DH makes overnight oats, but I just can't get used to the texture, so I think that I'm just going to stick with porridge.
Star - my aim for this week is to up my intake of fruit and veg, so I'm going to try to get something into each meal.

Well, after my Half Term of decadence, I've been back on it this week and have lost another 2lbs, which I'm really pleased with. So, over the last 6 weeks I've lost 9.5lbs and honestly haven't felt deprived at all.

I'm on week 11 of the 10K trainer now, so I'm going out for a run this morning - I'm really starting to enjoy it now and it helps that my Labrador running buddy is like the most enthusiastic personal trainer know to man!

Have a lovely weekend ladies and enjoy your treats!

Kim82 · 25/02/2017 10:11

Hi everyone, just checking in for the weekend. I have managed to stay with my healthy eating so far, yesterday I had weetabix for breakfast, wholemeal roll with ham, a 99 calorie cereal bar and banana for lunch then I had pasta and meatballs for dinner. No snacks at all as I didn't feel I needed them - that's a first for me!

Today will be:

B - weetabix and banana
L - soup with fruit and yoghurt afterwards
D - pork steak with new potatoes, garlic and smoked bacon with masses of veg

My challenge tonight will be ignoring the nice, chilled bottle of prosecco that is currently in the fridge...

Submariner · 25/02/2017 13:44

Feeling ultra healthy today. Avocado on wholemeal bread for breakfast (one of my favourite treaty breakfasts). 11.5 mile run (ate nuts, raisins and haribo on the way around but that's just fuelling! ;) ) Big pile of carrots, cucumber and humus for lunch with odd leftover bits of the kids scotch eggs and cheese toasties.

OK, doesn't sound that healthy but I like to restock after being on the road for 2.5 hours!!

Earned my chilled out Saturday now. :D

I may have opened the bottle of prosecco and be on my third glass...I'm not eating crisps with it though so that's something right?
