Common Sense Eating

SouthernNorthernGirl · 11/02/2017 13:32

I wanted to start a thread about eating sensibly / healthily etc without any diet fads involved.
Would love a bit of support in this, and I'm sure there are others that feel the same.

That's a great day floss. Well done!

I cannot bring myself to list my food today, but think I might start mfp again. Is is so useful to have a record and actually see what the food looks like all listed....

flossisboss · 12/02/2017 22:47

Thanks Plum, although I just ate a banana which tipped me over my budget. But never mind. Better than having another chocolate bar and I can't stand going to bed hungry. Life's too short.

I've managed to get really brutal with myself and track everything I eat even on my worst days of pure indulgence. The reason I put on so much weight quite quickly was that I shut my eyes to the calories I was eating. Now I try to look them square in the face and it's often not as scary as I thought. I feel so much more in control.

KlingybunFistelvase · 13/02/2017 08:03

Morning all!

I might d/l mfp today, as would like to keep an eye on calories. I think I'm in denial about how much I scoff! Grin

Today I'm planning to have scrambled egg on toast for breakfast with some fruit, a salad for lunch and Linda McCartney "chicken" with veg and either rice or lentils for dinner.

I have some gym classes booked in for the week and also want to aim to do a 15-20 min yoga session at home everyday if I can. That's the plan at least.

badhotfanny · 13/02/2017 08:17

Ok I'm keen to join in but have a bit of a history of joining and not keeping it up!

Just turned 40 a couple of weeks ago, training for a marathon (8 weeks yesterday), about 20lb heavier than my fighting weight, which I sustained for 10 years until about 18 months ago. Would like to lose a stone to begin with.

My problem is consistency. I can go days/weeks eating well and sensibly but then one meal out and it's a free-for-all again. I have no control and am greedy and when off the wagon often go to bed gorged and uncomfortable.

I just want to be on an even keel but when I am such a yo-yoer I can never relax because I can never be sure I have it cracked.

I also want to be a faster runner, like I used to be.

So. I weigh 11 stone today. Off for a 15 mile run in a bit but tummy is a bit sore from HUGE roast I had yesterday!

I'll come back and read more later - sounds like everyone has a really sensible attitude- good role models :)

KlingybunFistelvase · 13/02/2017 08:31

That's amazing you are doing a marathon badhotfanny! Hope you get to a time you're happy with soon.

I can relate to the yo-yo-ing. I'm definitely guilty of it too.

badhotfanny · 13/02/2017 09:02

Ha klingy it's easy to fling it around in conversation but not so easy to execute! Truth is, I'm really enjoying the runs I'm doing and am by no means an expert. But my eating habits are getting in the way and I'm really not looking forward to today's run because I ate too much over the weekend. And I hate myself for it.

flossisboss · 13/02/2017 09:39

Nice one klingy booking those classes and doing yoga!

And badhotfanny Shock I can't even imagine doing a marathon! Don't hate yourself. It's pointless. You can make loads of changes in 8 weeks.

Howlongtillbedtime · 13/02/2017 09:53

Another one here that sticks to something for few weeks, loses a good chunk of weight (not enough though) but then I fall off the wagon, get bored and eat all the shite I can manage .

Yesterday I did wk3 r1 of couch to 5k and this time I will finish it ! I have lost count of how many times I have tried and then after a few weeks I find some pointless excuse why I have to stop .

I need to prioritise me again which is a big part of the problem .

Good luck everyone.

badhotfanny · 13/02/2017 10:01

How I completely empathise.

Stick to c25k if you can. It's how I started. It really is amazing.

Howlongtillbedtime · 13/02/2017 10:14

Thank you, I actually enjoy it while I do it and love the sense of achievement it gives me but the getting off my arse is the hardest bit .

Also I won't run outside so I go to the gym and do it on a treadmill . I live in a village and hate the idea of seeing people I know which I am aware is ridiculous but I just can't get over it . At least until I can actually manage the whole 5k I suppose . I have booked a run in May so hoping that will keep me going .

SouthernNorthernGirl · 13/02/2017 10:34

I think that most posters on here have said similar - that they stick to something for a while, before giving up on it.
I know I do.
I'm going with the approach that nothing is banned, I just wont over indulge.

Yesterday I bought a nice bit of Stilton - I normally inhale it, so haven't had it in the house for a while. I haven't touched it. I'm not purposely leaving it, I just haven't fancied it yet Confused
I do wonder if it's because I know its not 'off limits'

OP posts:
Isadora2007 · 13/02/2017 10:46

Oh I have found my people I think...

I'm so fed up of trying to diet then failing then feeling crap so eating crap then getting fatter and the cycle starts all over....

I am going to write my foods down and plan ahead. And carry on with the c25k. Nearly finished it before Xmas then had the month off. I managed out last week 3 times. Only doing a 5 mins run and 3 mins walk combo but managed 30 mins so think I could up to 7/8mins run this week and 2/3walk. Just getting out would be good.

I won't weigh as I know it isn't good for my mental health but I do know when I feel less bloated etc so don't need to have numbers.

I would feel like I was being successful if I could just eat normally and not binge to be honest. 😔

Howlongtillbedtime · 13/02/2017 10:55

Just eat normally and not binge would be my goal as well .

I always think we don't eat many processed foods at all but I do eat ready made soup most days so could do with making my own (cheaper as well)
Snacks are pretty much all packet stuff , crisps, popcorn etc .
Evening meals are generally from scratch .

Planning is the key I guess . I know if I eat non processed food and exercise 3-4 times a week I feel so much better than a packet of crisps or sweets ever makes me feel so why do I do it ?

flossisboss · 13/02/2017 11:55

YY to planning. I have some emergency low calorie microwave meals in the freezer and always have various staples like eggs and a bag of spinach or watercress in the fridge. My new favourite thing is Nairns cheese oatcakes. Really tasty and filling.

I also have a Graze box delivered every two weeks. It's a luxury, but I no longer spend so much on wine, Starbucks and takeaways so it doesn't break the bank. I get pathetically excited when the box arrives Grin

Well done on not cracking into the Stilton Southern. I definitely think you're right about the 'off-limits' mentality.

PlumFairy2014 · 13/02/2017 13:05

Wow, I could have written a lot of these.
bad that's awesome. Once upon a time I used to run 10 miles for fun... not sure how the run will go tonight. Hoping for a 5k, but we'll see.
southern I had that today too, because I knew I could have things I didn't feel the need to cram my face full of everything.
Giving up booze till Mother's Day too if anyone would care to join...?

KlingybunFistelvase · 13/02/2017 13:17

Oh wow plum, good for you on the no booze till Mother's Day plan! I'm going to try not to drink during the week but can't make any guarantees about weekends! Happy to cheer you on though.

Hope all the runners have good ones today! 👍🏃 Smile

KlingybunFistelvase · 13/02/2017 13:19

Also I just had my winter salad for lunch and was delicious. Was my own invention, so I'm all smug about it (beetroot, feta, raw cabbage, grated carrot and chopped hazelnuts with a bit of olive oil). Actually looking at that it's not all that terribly inventive is it? Hmmm.

badhotfanny · 13/02/2017 14:05

It's a beautiful day for running Smile just got back. Knackered but feeling strong! Now eating tuna mayo sandwiches.

I hope everyone is having a good day. Goal for me is not to go to bed feeling bloated. If anyone's eating something nice, I'd love seeing me recipe ideas.

flossisboss · 13/02/2017 14:27

Well done badhotfanny it is a really beautiful day.

klingy that salad sounds delicious.

I had some smoked salmon, low fat cream cheese and baby leaf salad for lunch. Loads of dill, black pepper and lemon juice 👌

PlumFairy2014 · 13/02/2017 20:41

These meals sound so tasty! Pinching ideas. Grin

I feel I have achieved a couple of things today. No evening binge and I went for a run! I wibbled and I wobbled, but I did not stop. Made the 5km... 2 minutes slower per mile than last time I ran. Blush

I can do this! for one day

badhotfanny · 13/02/2017 20:44

Good job plum!

SouthernNorthernGirl · 13/02/2017 20:51

Well done for all those who are running. I may join you!

Lovely meal ideas - will be looking to make some.
Anyone have suggestions for my Stilton? I usually smear it on baguette with real butter and stuff it in my face

OP posts:
badhotfanny · 13/02/2017 20:55

Broccoli and Stilton soup? Yum AND green Smile

SouthernNorthernGirl · 13/02/2017 20:58

Howlong I do like ready made soups too, the ones from the chiller. Do you have any favourites? Perhaps you could start with recreating those?

OP posts:
SouthernNorthernGirl · 13/02/2017 20:59

bad I've tried to make that before, although wasn't keen. I'm sure it was my recipe though, as everyone else seems to love Broccoli and Stilton.
