Need to lose weight but know the booze is my major downfall! Need a buddy(s) to do dryathlon with to keep the motivation up and to raise cash for Macmillan cancer support. My DH guffawed when I said, ..... Want to lose lbs at the same time (ps dryathlon is to keep off th booze for all January). I am 13 st 4 lbs and could do with losing a few stone too....eeek

We are in double figuresGrin

chaosmonkey · 10/01/2014 21:32

Yes. Double figures... i am in bed already at 9.30 on a friday. But i do have a book (and a phone!), rather than wine and rubbish tv. Maybe that is progress.

On the bright side, my skin is starting to look less wrinkly - maybe thats the fag free bit...

Willthisworknow · 10/01/2014 21:38

fedup21 · 10/01/2014 22:12

Could have sold my firstborn for a glass of Pinot at 8pm but have braved my way through it with a hot bath and a diet coke-bloody boring though and I'm in a right old grump! I doubt I will lose any weight or improve my skin as I'm eating shed loads of crappy food to compensate for having to have a miserable evening ;)

Guineapigfriend · 10/01/2014 22:17

I've been eating like a bastard all week!
But went to a yoga class this evening, this is the longest I've not drunk for years.

Willthisworknow · 11/01/2014 00:15

Well done all except I'm glued to the throne and feeling so sorry for myself. I hope it passes soon but good news ill prob lose a few pounds!

Pumpkin567 · 11/01/2014 07:20

Stay strong, I'm still dry and ths year not eating my body weight in sugar to compensate. ( last year ate so much I needed the shred)

I don't miss it, I do miss the ritual of it though. Shows how we get conditioned to something.

My skin is starting to look great, massive sugar reduction probably helping too. I've lost 3 or 4 pound so far.

Day 11 ( I think)

spudmasher · 11/01/2014 08:00

Willthis...hope you feel better soon. Stay well hydrated or else you will feel like you've got a hangover.
Fed up......one thing at a time!
I managed to get through last night by watching benidorm and birds of a feather I'd recorded......Benidorm was about a cocktail competition and BOAF ended with them all sipping massive glasses of wine! NOT HELPFUL!!!
Feel great this morning! Skipping off to work!

Willthisworknow · 11/01/2014 13:05

Yes defo a third through now peeps. Wish I was skipping but certainly better than last night. Lost 2 lbs overnight tho will no doubt be put back on again. Making it easier in the no alcohol dept this weekend. Now to try food! Spud - yes doesn't helpbutthink how good that wine will taste when u know you finally have it!
Well must go - feeling better but wiped!

spookyskeleton · 11/01/2014 16:05

Good luck tonight Smile I am definitely going to find it tough tonight...as has been said, it is the habit rather than wine itself!

willthis hope you feel better soon Thanks

spud wish I felt great but can honestly say I feel no different Hmm

spudmasher · 11/01/2014 17:38

Oh no spooky! How exactly are you feeling?

spookyskeleton · 11/01/2014 21:08

Just the usual Grin I am not springing out of bed, no change to skin etc.

I go to gym classes at 9.30mon weekend mornings and it was no easier today without drinking the night before than it used to be after wine Hmm Hmm

Willthisworknow · 12/01/2014 12:38

Day 12 - everyone still coping? I am feeling better today but DH not well now. He said he had it the other day. My friend has asked me if I fancy dping a sponsored firewalk! Anyone done one of those? Another weekend survived! Less than 3 weeks to go!!!!

OP posts:
fedup21 · 12/01/2014 14:16

Coping, but was a bit tetchy between 8-9 on Friday night! Saturday night was easier as we were out and didn't ever really drink Sunday-Thursday anyway, so that's one tricky weekend ticked off!

It's a bit boring though to just drink squash in the evening! What can we drink that's a bit different to daytime drinks?!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 12/01/2014 16:11

I'm still here Grin

Willthisworknow · 12/01/2014 16:12

Mocktails?

OP posts:
spookyskeleton · 12/01/2014 18:26

Me too. 12 days done, 19 to go...

have you tried the drink spudmasher described earlier? cranberry juice, lime juice and soda water...it is lovely and you can pretend there is gin/vodka in it Grin

spudmasher · 12/01/2014 20:08

I don't think the dark is helping with the mornings........
I always feel a bit SAD at this time of the year....should ease soon as the days lengthen. Maybe you'll have a bit more zing then spooky
Has anyone noticed weight loss? I haven't.....but this week I intend to rein in the calories a bit more... No more evening trips to the biccie tin or fruit bowl come to that. I'm going to close the kitchen after dinner.

Guineapigfriend · 12/01/2014 21:02

Has anyone thought about doing this for longer than a month? In the book I mentioned upthread, Jill Stark gives the booze up for a year. She quotes a movement called 'Happy Sunday Mornings' which suggests going for 3 months. I'm intrigued but not sure whether I want to do it.

I nearly cracked yesterday, but the feeling just passed. It is kind of worrying how hard this can be!

PeppaFuckingPig · 12/01/2014 21:17

I'm doing this and, although I'm finding it 'easier' than I anticipated, I must confess that the only thing that is keeping me going through January is the fact that on the 1st February I fully intend to have a bloody good drink.

I also weighed myself today and, unless the scales are faulty, I've lost 5-6lbs without an excessive change to my diet (other than no alcohol). I think this is probably down to the fact I'm not snacking on crisps and peanuts and chocolate with my wine/vodka whatever, and then ordering in a pizza or Chinese or Indian, and then having a big fry up to get me going in the morning, along with a whole load of other stodge.

I can't say I'm feeling particularly good for having no alcohol at all. I've got 2 coldsores at the moment - the last time I had a sore was over 2 years ago. And my skin and hair isn't looking any better. But, i'll persevere. And the reason I was doing dry jan in the first place is because I am concerned about the frequency and amount I drink, so although I'm going to continue drinking, I'm definitely going to cut back and moderate my alcohol intake more.

Guineapigfriend · 12/01/2014 21:21

That's brilliant weight loss Peppa (love your name)!!
I'm too scared to stand on the scales after my crumpet, cheese bread - fest last week
