Need to lose weight but know the booze is my major downfall! Need a buddy(s) to do dryathlon with to keep the motivation up and to raise cash for Macmillan cancer support. My DH guffawed when I said, ..... Want to lose lbs at the same time (ps dryathlon is to keep off th booze for all January). I am 13 st 4 lbs and could do with losing a few stone too....eeek

I am feeling very delicate this morning after a really good party last night with family.

So today and the next couple of days will be easy but after that may need some support as memories of the hangover fade! Looking forward to giving my body a rest from the excesses of December tho.

spudmasher · 01/01/2014 16:37

I'm in!!! Did it last year and the health benefits were wonderful.
So....day one....how are we all doing?

Willthisworknow · 01/01/2014 20:32

Tippetty tap - at my mothers.... That says it all......

Hee hee!! I've just had a decaf coffee...
A friend came over with a bottle of red but it remains unopened. Well done me! Putting it in the garage for Feb.

Good day Smile had lunch at MIL's when I would normally have a glass of wine to get me through the afternoon but didn't miss it at all.

nobut I agree about the 'pretend' drink. I am sat here with a glass of lime and soda water and feel like it is a proper drink iyswim Grin

Willthisworknow · 01/01/2014 22:34

Phew that was tough. Dad pours a glass of cava without asking if I wanted it. I feel the juices flowing but managed to pour it down the sink. I would tell them about the dryathlon if my mother would not go on and on and on as she thinks we drink too much anyway and shed get all self righteous. Hard enough on your first day without loads of nagging....Wink. Here's to the next 30 nights dry.....

First test tonight!

Just come back from a very boozy New Years Day party. Stuck to fizzy water. As it progressed it got easier and easier not to miss the champagne/lovely wines everyone was tucking into.

Willthisworknow · 01/01/2014 23:19

Well done bowlers arm, well done all resisters. You'll jump out of bed tomorrow bright and early ready to face the world. The prob I have tonight is that I feel well hungry! Just had a long bath and hope I manage to sleep! G'night!

Morning, day 2!

Bowlersarm · 02/01/2014 10:41

Morning. Today should be straightforward hopefully!

Bowlersarm · 02/01/2014 10:42

....as I don't normally drink on a Thursday, and nothing social on today.

MizK · 02/01/2014 11:15

I'm definitely in! Today will be my first day as Dp brought me in a glass of rose whilst Sherlock was on, and honestly I didn't even enjoy it! Think I've just had way too much over December. Think i can manage 30 days off, not doing anything major in January so should be OK.....although the Friday night glass of wine is a pretty firmly entrenched habit that may be difficult to kick!
willthisworknow impressed at you pouring away cava! that's willpower, cava is a definite favourite of mine....

spudmasher · 02/01/2014 13:28

Woke up knackered....but I remember from last year that the bright morning feeling takes a good few days of absolutely no alcohol before it arrives.
I read in the paper the other day that your liver can regenerate itself with no alcohol......cool!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 02/01/2014 13:32

Glad I have found you, I wondered if there would be a dry January thread. I'm on day 2 and have a banging headache - I have also kicked caffeine.

moocowmrs · 02/01/2014 13:33

Willthisworknow · 02/01/2014 17:56

Yesterday was fine as in bed by nine watching Sherlock and asleep by half 10.

I think as someone else said up thread Friday night will be the worst after a busy day at work I often pour a glass as soon as DS in bed. Will have to mumsnet instead.

Anybody got any nice non alcoholic alternatives as fed up of coke, lemonade etc?

spudmasher · 02/01/2014 18:52

Petal, my favourite is cranberry with fizzy water with a big squeeze of fresh lime and a slice of lime. Loads of ice. I don't like sweet drinks, so the dry cranberry and the sour lime work well for me.

spookyskeleton · 02/01/2014 20:16

spudmasher that sounds yummy. might try that drink tomorrow nightSmile

So far so good but I am with you all that it is the weekend nights that will be the hardest!!

spudmasher · 02/01/2014 20:21

Spooky, I should have added that the 'light' cranberry juice keeps the cals down as well.

petal68 · 02/01/2014 20:29

Thanks spudmasher that does sound good.

Might treat myself to some different juices to try

Cristiane · 02/01/2014 21:07

Hello. I'd like to join.. For health reasons. Got a big party on 17th but would like to go without then too - but trying not to project forwards too much!

kernowal · 02/01/2014 21:59

I signed up for the Cancer Research one last night because I'm feeling sorry for my DH, who can't drink for medical reasons for a couple of weeks. I was given 13 bottles of wine for Christmas, mainly from clients who want their tax returns done by the end of January, and they're all looking at me accusingly from the wine rack (the bottles, not my clients).

Guineapigfriend · 02/01/2014 22:07

Hello! I'm in. I've just read Jill stark: high sobriety, my year without booze. It was very interesting about her experiences socialising without alcohol and her research into the culture of binge drinking in Australia and uk. I woke up on NYD feeling shit, and I'm fed up with insidious drinking. I am going to aim for one month off, and maybe think about 3 months if I manage 1. It's going to be tough, I'm very easily persuaded :)

spookyskeleton · 02/01/2014 22:20

I am trying for 1 month but if it has a positive effect on my weight loss, I may continue with it for a bit longer!

However I have a 'special' birthday in a few months and I can't see me getting away with not drinking then Wink
