New Year Low Carb Bootcamp

1000 replies

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 29/12/2012 21:30

Hope you all had a lovely Christmas, and that Santa brought you everything that you deserved! Xmas Grin

By now, I'm guessing that many of us will be rather tired of chocolates and stodgy food. Mince pie anyone? Xmas Wink

So. The next low carb Bootcamp will be starting on 7 January. It will run for 10 weeks, which will take us to mid-March. The idea of Bootcamp is that we have an initial strict fortnight, which will see a significant amount of weight loss, followed by a more relaxed 8 weeks.

Overall, if you follow the rules, you can expect to lose anything up to 20lbs in this time period.

So who is in?

If you want to join us, add your name to the list and tell us what your aims/objectives are.

I will start ...

Wow! Lots of new people still, and more questions! Will try and answer them:

Bessie123 - 5 cherry tomatoes is unlikely to have derailed you! They will be around 3.5g in total, so not a problem

KickArseQueen - if you need to avoid gluten then low carbing is perfect for you! Your carbs should be coming mainly from vegetables and salad and you shouldn't be eating bread or pasta anyway

TheSloppelGanger - that's a US site, so I'm not sure how reliable those counts will be, as they are probably based on US brands. Also, they measure carbs differently - you need to make sure you are using the net carb count, not the carb count including fibre

Essexgirl31 - this WOE is harder if you are a vegetarian, although lots of people do succeed. Rose Elliot's book is often recommended here. Re vegetarian sausages and Quorn, it will depend what brand you buy or what Quorn product you buy. Cauldron vegetarian sausages are 3g per sausage, which is quite high - but other brands could be lower. Quorn mince is 4.5g carbs per 100g. Although that's not too high, when you consider that meat mince is 0g carbs, you can see that adding Quorn could quickly raise your overall carb count

Rubygates - hello! And step away from the chocolate ... Wink

Pistey - sloshing with water now I hope, rather than sloe gin? Grin

Guymartins - I haven't given up drinking coffee with milk. I really don't like it black, and only just tolerate it with cream. So my solution is to try and restrict myself to 2 cups per day.

FallingOver - cinema snacks are hard, unless you're prepared to take hard boiled eggs or packets of sliced meat into the cinema with you! But it raises a really interesting point. Are you snacking in the cinema because you are hungry, or because we have become conditioned to snacking in the cinema? (No coincidence that the profits for cinema chains come from their sales of food and drink, by the way!)

DangerousMouse - there is a list of allowed foods somewhere on this thread - I posted one a couple of days ago. Also, if you look on the spreadsheet, which is also linked to on this thread (and a new one will be posted for Monday), the tabs at the bottom will show the list of carb counts for allowed veg.

Cauldron Original Tofu is 2.3g carbs per 100g - so not too bad but, as I said to essexgirl31, that can quickly add up, so go easy

ProlificMincePieBreeder - please don't expect to lose weight overnight! It won't happen like that. Some days it will, some days it won't. Better, if you can't cope with seeing a loss per day to weigh just once a week.

frenchfries22 - I assume you are another vegetarian from your meal choices? Only thing I would warn you about is the amount of cheese/dairy you are eating. It can impede weight loss for some people. In terms of how much to eat - you need to eat enough so that you have satisfied your appetite. This WOE is not about starving ourselves. There is no need to do that.

Phew! Hope that is everyone dealt with ... !

OP posts:
BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 03/01/2013 10:19

sorelip - no need to count carbs - and no need to go as low as that anyway! It's a great idea to be aware of how many carbs you're eating (most people don't have a clue), but no need to be that restrictive.

OP posts:
DangerousMouse · 03/01/2013 10:26

Great, thank you. Sorry to repeat questions but the thread is a bit long to go through it all! I'll wait until monday to get the spreadsheet.

Hoping to get back on the wagon- carbs really is not a friend of mine!

Rooobs · 03/01/2013 10:34

Good morning y'all!

How are the headaches today? I'm feeling grand, so far...

B: scrambled eggs with butter and cheese.
L: will be fried chorizo and salad (PHWOAR)
D: to be decided
S: boiled eggs are already in the fridge.

Have a good day! Smile

Rooobs · 03/01/2013 10:35

Oh and another interesting veg suggestion is:

Slice leeks and microwave for about 2 minutes
Add grated cheese (and a dash of cream if you want)
Microwave again for a minute.

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 03/01/2013 10:38

Oh yes - leeks, cream and cheese are a wonderful combination! With lots of black pepper! I may have to have that for my lunch now.

I'm having a late breakfast of 2 boiled eggs, mashed with butter. I'm at the hairdressers till mid-afternoon, and then have my first visit to the gym in about 2 weeks, which is going to be a killer! I will have some yoghurt before I go, just to keep the energy/protein levels up.

Dinner tonight will be sausages and assorted veg (leeks, as above, I think!), broccoli and leftover spinach with garlic butter from last night. DH/DS2 will have mash with theirs.

OP posts:
GreenyEyes · 03/01/2013 10:41

Morning all

Not a great start this morning, we were late up- so my plans of boxing up breakfast and lunch were scuppered (chose to brush my hair instead).

So, Ive had a canteen breakfast of bacon, fried egg and a (too carby) sausage. With a black coffee. About to start on the water now, and lunch will have to be sandwich innards.

A lesson there for me to not be a lazy arse, and do my lunches on an evening in future.

prettybird · 03/01/2013 10:43

Now that I'm back on a PC, I should add myself to the list :)

anewdispensation · 03/01/2013 11:10

Hi all, I started yesterday and this is day 2. I have the shakes and a headache but I am not hungry.. I weighed myself this morning and I am already down 2lbs. But the shakes are bad and I can not stop thinking of the lush marks and spencer ice cream in the freezer and the cold sprite in the fridge. I guess that is my body craving sugar. I will soldier on. Takind DS2 for immunisation later this afternoon and then it is off to the shops to stock up on meat, veg, cream and cheese. Someone please tell me to keep on. I need all the encouragement going...

hurricanewyn · 03/01/2013 11:18

Morning all.

Hope everyone's feeling ok. Had bratwurst & egg again for breakfast. Really enjoying it. Roast pork for dinner tonight. My slow cooker hasn't been replaced, and I really miss it - pork isn't the same from the oven.

I was sick during the night though - I woke up with really bad heartburn at about 4 & ended up throwing up. Really unpleasant & took me ages to get back to sleep. I've never had this before - hs anyone else? Don't think it's this WOE, but don't know what it is

FallingOver · 03/01/2013 11:28

Touché about the cinema, BWIW. It is habit I suppose. I have always had a weakness for popcorn though - my all time favourite snack, far more so than anything sugary. But I am determined to be good! Last night watching the new Attenborough I found it VERY hard to resist snacking - wasn't hungry, just used to nibbling on something on the couch. But I have found for me that not eating after 6pm works wonders for overnight weightloss, so I contented myself with a herbal tea and focused on the cannibalistic crickets on tv instead!

Those kale chips sound interesting, Ewan. Not sure if my lovely local independent cinema would allow me to crack out boiled eggs and sliced meat, so I might just have to stick with a large coffee. Ah well. Them's the breaks.

MulledwineGless · 03/01/2013 11:29

anewdisposition - one more day like this then a lifetime free of being a slave to blood sugar lows and highs.
That's got to be worth it? If you are shaking try keeping potassium levels up with bovril/lo salt/avocado etc

hurricanewyn - oh no :(
Sounds like you have got the lurgy. There are lots of bugs around.
I have dragged myself into work after waking the DC up who are defo in holiday sleep mode still. Feeling grim and wondering whether to go home but dosing myself up.

hurricanewyn · 03/01/2013 11:32

It'll pass anew Quicker than you think too. Once you're through the worst of it, the hold carbs have over you is gone. Your relationship with food will improve - just think, if not eating a certain food is causing you to have really bad shakes do you really want to continue eating it.
If you had a day off booze for example and got the shakes, it'd indicate a problem - but we don't feel the same about food. Seems crazy really.

I love this WOE & lost 31 lbs between July& Dec & get a bit evangelical. Hope I don't come across as preachy...

RubyGates · 03/01/2013 11:45

But, but, but.... It's 87% cocoa solids...
Even I can't eat a whole bar of that :-)

PrettyPirate · 03/01/2013 11:48

I couldn't wait until Monday, so sort of started today.
Second day drinking loads of water, managed 2,5 l yesterday, aiming for that for every day for now on.

B - boiled egg with bit of mayo, a tomato, ham with philly, some cheese. Usually I have my second breakfast two hrs later as I'm starving and feeling weak - not today! I didn't even eat massive amount of food!
L - will be scrambled eggs with some pancetta and mushrooms.
D - will be making burgers with cheese, rest of family has with buns, for me with veg, probably grean beans and/or broccoli.

DH is coming around with the idea of me not eating pastaGrin. He's actually supportive after I explained how and why and all that. Bought John Briffa book last night on my Kindle and have been reading that - really interesting book although don't understand much of sciency stuff

JessicaWakefield · 03/01/2013 11:50

Really pleased to hear that things are going in the right direction Ewan I really felt for you when I read your post on the sleep board. Can totally empathise re DS2 as DS is teething and has a terrible cold so he's very miserable over night at the moment. My DF keeps telling me to enjoy every moment and although he's an amazing Dad he definitely never did night wakings with us!

Thanks for answering my question BIWI. I will still give it a go.

EwanHoozami · 03/01/2013 11:59

More Interesting Vegetables Alert

can you tell I'm doing my online shop? Grin

BlackAffronted · 03/01/2013 12:32

I have just bookmarked a whole heap of recipes that I cant wait to try out! None were specific low-carb, but are anyway or very easily adapted. I adore cooking, so really looking forward to trying them.

Fennel - are we allowed that?

BlackAffronted · 03/01/2013 12:33

Thanks Ewan, have bookmarked that page! :)

Doshusallie · 03/01/2013 12:47

Morning all. Am up a pound this morning Hmm but I think that is the residual nye sinning (crisps, lakes of alcohol etc) and a bit of a nut habit. Am pretty pleased to have only gained 2 pounds overall across the festive season. Particularly as I go up and down by those 2 pounds throughout the year.

Breakfast was total Greek yoghurt.

Lunch has just been a 3 egg omelette with mushrooms and smoked salmon.

I am sure that being strict over this weekend plus the no drinking will see be back at target by early next week.

[disclaimer about being boring - I tend to use this thread to talk about what I eat daily and my weight - I would be mortified if this was my conversation fodder in real life as it is extremely navel gazing (literally) and self absorbed - so thanks all for being my sounding board for this topic!! Grin]

Have just been to tescos and stocked up - found chilli flavoured pork scratchings!!! Bloody annoying that they don't do full fat total, will need to do a lidl soon for that.

Was instructed by dh to buy butter and iceberg lettuce instead of marg (that he and the kids were still eating) and salad bags as he too watched that programme the other night that featured feathers in bread..... Envy

Tea will be a tescos ready meal Blush referenced up thread, chicken breast wrapped in bacon with cheese, very low carb, and veg (probably the leek cheese thing as that sounds amazing).

Thanks for the braised cabbage reminder, can second it is amazing. do you think it would work with red cabbage?

LucyVFood · 03/01/2013 12:47

I'm having another 'I can't eat like this and lose weight' moment.

Breakfast was three rashers of bacon, two scrambled eggs and a tomato with butter in the eggs. MFP tells me that cost me nearly 800 calories (although only 7 carbs).

I'd love some reassurance that this will work :( Sorry, I know it's not a question as such!

Anew I'm the same with the headache and a tiny bit shaky too.
