New Year Low Carb Bootcamp

1000 replies

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 29/12/2012 21:30

Hope you all had a lovely Christmas, and that Santa brought you everything that you deserved! Xmas Grin

By now, I'm guessing that many of us will be rather tired of chocolates and stodgy food. Mince pie anyone? Xmas Wink

So. The next low carb Bootcamp will be starting on 7 January. It will run for 10 weeks, which will take us to mid-March. The idea of Bootcamp is that we have an initial strict fortnight, which will see a significant amount of weight loss, followed by a more relaxed 8 weeks.

Overall, if you follow the rules, you can expect to lose anything up to 20lbs in this time period.

So who is in?

If you want to join us, add your name to the list and tell us what your aims/objectives are.

I will start ...

Does anyone have favourite quick & easy sauce suggestions to go with vegetables?

I personally find that butter added to any vegetable makes it more interesting!

But how about considering the following:

  • instead of boiling/steaming veg, why not roast it? Roasted with olive oil, sea salt, black pepper and, if you like, some chilli flakes
  • pan fry with sliced/chopped shallots. Add diced bacon/pancetta or chilli, again, if you like spicy food
  • fresh herbs are also good - try sliced mixed peppers, fried with shallots in plenty of olive oil. Once charred to your satisfaction, stir in some chopped, fresh coriander
  • and a cheese sauce made from cream/grated cheese is always good

Prolific we use single cream in coffee here. Often called pouring cream in coffee shops...

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 02/01/2013 22:10

YY to herbs and spices!

Another sauce for veg - cream mixed with wholegrain or Dijon mustard

single or double cream?

I think either is fine - more fat in double, but I think both are carb-free. Will check ...

MrsHerculePoirot · 02/01/2013 22:12

MrsHerculePoirot · 02/01/2013 22:13

Double cream nutritional info from Sainsbury's website (per 100ml):

Carbohydrate 2.6g
Fat 47.5g

Single cream:

Per 100ml
Carbohydrate 3.9g
Fat 18.0g

So neither is carb-free! And better to go for double rather than single.

MegTheCat · 02/01/2013 22:20

I use double cream for coffee as well as cooking - I don't think it matters very much whether you use double or single. Double will have a slightly lower carb content (but is a bit messy for pouring)

MrsHerculePoirot · 02/01/2013 22:21

Might try double in coffee then!

MegTheCat · 02/01/2013 22:21

x post - sorry

caramelwaffle · 02/01/2013 22:22

I've just checked in the fridge.

Tesco - Double cream 1.6g carbs and 50.5g fat/100g

M&S - extra thick single cream 3.9g carbs and 18g/100g

questions for BIWI and other experts at low carb eating

Hi again.
I tried to ease myself into this WOE this morning and decided to have 3 spoons of Greek yogurt. I can't tolerate milk but am usually okay with yogurt in small amounts. After 20 minutes I had the most awful phlegm (sorry) Sad. And the shortly after I had the most awful heartburn and in the end had to make myself sick to relieve the pain.

So I'm stuck. I was going to start the day with Greek yogurt, or Philly with cucumber but I really don't think that's a good idea.

I'm allergic to some fish, so have an aversion to all fish, ESP things like salmon and dd is very allergic to lots of foods we don't have in the house including egg.

I tried to look for pate today but all the ones I saw contain potato starch.

I am so confused about what to eat for breakfast. I know I could eat leftovers from the night before, but I need to do this in baby steps. I have lived off ready meals for a long long time, and don't cook for myself or my DP. (Blush).

I really want to doh is as it makes so so much sens Etonian me but I have a mental block about what to eat first thing. Can someone help?

Sorry for the looooong question.

Many thanks in advance. xxx

mumat39 · 02/01/2013 22:25

So so much sense to me! Etonian= stupid ipad correction.

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 02/01/2013 22:28

mumat39 - this is exactly the problem that some people experience with dairy. Your reaction suggests that you can't tolerate even yoghurt - sorry.

Can you not have eggs in the house even for you?

Otherwise, how about bacon and mushrooms? Or (low carb) sausages? You could also have these with a couple of fried tomatoes.

Sainsbury's sell a low carb, premium sausage made by The Black Farmer, and they are lovely.

But really, it does sound like you are going to have to start cooking Grin. Ready meals are really not great at the best of times, and you won't find many that are low in carbs.

OP posts:
mumat39 · 02/01/2013 22:29

Doh is = do this. Aargh
Sorry for my terrible spelling.

OhIWishThereWasABook · 02/01/2013 22:29

Can I join?? Please :-)
Started today, feel fine so far but even I can go a day without wine! Reading post about breakfasts. Always the trickiest but scrambled eggs in microwave is quick for the early mornings.

GreenyEyes · 02/01/2013 22:30

Mumat how about celery with cream cheese, or wodges of hard cheese?

A bit processed- heavy, but sausages, bacon and mushrooms fried in butter (or a small amount of tomatoes)?

Chunks of roast chicken with olives, mayo?

Ground almond pancakes (maybe for Bootcamp Lite)

Will keep thinking

GreenyEyes · 02/01/2013 22:31

X with BIWI sorry

caramelwaffle · 02/01/2013 22:33

mumat39

You could try bacon, sausage and fried mushrooms.

Continental meats - chorizos/salamis/hams with olives and cheese.

Thick cut British/Irish hams and cheeses.

caramelwaffle · 02/01/2013 22:34

x-post

MrsHerculePoirot · 02/01/2013 22:36

Mumat39 I might be wrong, but I think the pâté is fine - the amount of potato starch in it would be negligible. I hadn't checked before but the one I have also lists that as an ingredient.

I do second starting to cook - I am enjoying it so much more than I thought I would. Perhaps buy a low carb cookbook and promise yourself to cook twice a week from it to start. One midweek and one weekend meal and make notes in the book about what you liked didn't like. What took ages what was quick...

mumat39 · 02/01/2013 22:37

Thanks BIWI. I do need o start cooking, DD is very allergic and I am shit scared of the things she is allergic to so we don't have eggs in the house at all. I wouldn't even eat an egg sandwich while out. It's really tough actually and is one of the reasons I've become so stupidly dependent on ready meals.

I do need to start cooking and I thnk this woe might be a bit of a lifesaver as DD is allergic to lots of things that I would easily avoid following this plan.

Over the last few years I really haven't looked after myself at all. I am on anti depressants for anxiety and depression, mostly caused by the fact that I live in fear over allergies. I don't want another year of feeling like I have been, and so will start cooking but I also know that I need to do this slowly as otherwise I'll just revert back, so the 'easier' breakfast options would have been really helpful.

I also find myself getting a bit of deer in headlight syndrome, where I can't think of obvious solutions, so thanks so much for the ideas about bacon and mushrooms, and the sausages.

I was hoping that by easing off dairy for the last year or so would have meant that I might tolerate it better now, but I am still slightly in shock at how awful I felt this morning.

Thanks for replying, I really appreciate your help.
Xxx

Well that feels better one egg (why did I not think of that), cup of bovril seems to have helped the pangs of hunger thankyou.
