5 days before the wedding

And 2 emails have been received by all guests from the bride,
One last night saying all women must wear a dress to the wedding and all men must wear day suits. (I have sorted my outfit months ago - trousers, cami and jacket, and DP has chinos and jacket )
Email two this afternoon, was asking all guests to change to smart casual for the evening reception.

I'm not brave enough for AIBU, but surely this is bonkers 5 days prior to the wedding, when invites were sent in January. If really wanted to have a dress code shouldn't it have been included with invite?

Yes it’s bonkers. Even if if was months in advance I think it’s outrageous to say women have to wear dresses.

I would email back
Dear Bride(zilla)
I was planning on wearing a stylish trouser suit but If this means we are no longer welcome please let me know asap

bigknickersbigknockers · 13/08/2022 17:06

Ohh just caught up with this and am now eagerly awaiting the update

dollyblack · 13/08/2022 17:12

She's at the wedding

Have never heard of guests changing for evening, perhaps the occasional guest would like to change but definitely not asked to by the bride.

Bellie99 · 13/08/2022 20:00

Oh my! Sorry to have kept you all waiting!
Yes you guessed - we were allowed in. All sorts of dress codes going on including

Trousers worn by

Bridegrooms mother
And
Brides mother!!!!!!!

A couple of people have gone back to hotel to change but most have just removed jackets as per every other wedding I have been to eons agoSmile

I have no idea why the emails came out as they did, maybe she was having a row about dress code with her mother and was trying to make a point (the general consensus of the rest of guests). There were also aa few pairs of shorts spotted and lots of men in chinos with short sleeved shirts and no jackets. DP kept jacket on until after dinner and then gave in!
Bride and groom not changed for evening either btw.

I think it was probably a clumsy attempt to say they'd like to stick to usual formal wedding attire for the wedding, but be comfortable in the evening, bearing in mind the weather forecast.

Stravaig · 13/08/2022 20:15

Gosh, well done mothers of the bride and groom!
Wonder if the back story will emerge one day?
Nice that you updated OP x

RampantIvy · 13/08/2022 20:29

Brilliant update Grin

mnahmnah · 13/08/2022 21:16

I wonder if it was because the two mums were wearing trousers, they were trying to make them seem more ‘special’ by asking everyone else not to?

Kite22 · 13/08/2022 22:41

Thanks for updating OP

Much less dramatic than we were all hoping for Grin

I do love that BOTH the mothers of the B&G were in trousers though Grin

Alfixnm · 13/08/2022 22:55

The fact that both mums were in trouser suits despite the last minute dress code makes me wonder if there was aggro between them and the bride over their outfits... and her first email was an (unsuccessful) attempt to push them into wearing dresses??

I mean it's all a very odd coincidence otherwise, so it's not hard to believe that there could have been some behind the scenes drama!
