This came as a bit of a surprise this morning! I've been outside and it's definitely a bit drizzly but no wind to speak of. I think someone at BBCW has pressed the wrong button 😆

@BarbaraHoward surely though anyone existing in the real world will have heard about the hurricane in Florida and realised that if that was genuinely going to happen in the UK it would have been all over the news? That they don't just pop up out of nowhere but grow and develop for a week before hand?

Chersfrozenface · 10/10/2024 10:19

Not the first embarrassing glitch, evidently.

In June 2023, when daytime temperatures in the UK were in the 20s, the BBC app and website were forecasting 7 degrees C.

This one has much better jokes, though.

How strange! I randomly checked Manchester and it's looking fine there...

That must be wrong though - doesn't it always rain in Manchester??

Blackberriesandcobwebs · 10/10/2024 10:57

I reckon bbc website has been hacked or it's a disgruntled employees last day at the Beeb 😁. There's a strapline on the website now saying they're looking to fix the weather report!

CabbagesAndCeilingWax · 10/10/2024 11:22

What do you think is more mortifying - making a mistake at a smaller place of work, and maybe all 100 colleagues knowing you've done it, or making a national mistake like this, and millions of people seeing it, but none of them knowing that it was you.... 🤔

(assuming both mistakes are just embarrassing, not dangerous or expensive etc)

Nope, my daughter is in Cork and can beat that...

Love it 😂 Beautiful bright sunshine too.

Remember folks, there's no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing
I always check the forecast before deciding what shoes to wear for my run. I started to regret this morning's choice of diving boots after about a mile - and I had been hoping for a PB what with the 466 mph tailwind and all.

Well you know I just put a puddlesuit on my preschooler and off we yomped - wind can be fun you know, you just need the right mindset.

Threewheeler1 · 10/10/2024 12:47

Still 5737 here. Might hang my head out the window and get a free facelift from mother nature 😃

Bodeganights · 10/10/2024 13:29

Threewheeler1 · 10/10/2024 07:42

This is Britain though and we're plucky, even in the face of seemingly never-seen-before-and-physically-impossible winds 😃

Dont we all just get out the big big coat?

I told DP about the wind this morning, he said he was cycling to work and instead of the usual 20 minutes it would take less than a minute with that wind behind him.
I didnt point out he might be cycling into it.

Nooo... don't get out the big, big coat - you'll blow away like you're wearing a built in parachute!

Chersfrozenface · 10/10/2024 16:17

I see the BBC are now naming their weather data provider correctly - "Meteorological forecasting company DTN, which supplies BBC Weather with data".

GloriaSmud · 10/10/2024 16:55

The problem's taking some time to fix by the looks of things.

The metoffice must be laughing their socks off at the problems their rival has got!

Bodeganights · 10/10/2024 17:55

It's still officially super windy here. But we both got back from work safely.
I couldn't wear my big, big coat cos the hi viz wont fit over it.
So just the big coat and a scarf. Sorted

daisychain01 · 10/10/2024 18:33

It now has a message saying Sorry this forecast is wrong due to a data error Please ignore while we fix the problem.

No shit, Sherlock Grin

theDudesmummy · 10/10/2024 19:16

Still 404 degrees and hurricanes in Johannesburg! My mother says she has been staying in the shade and so has survived.

Embarrassing for the BBC that it's taken so long to fix. I imagine everyone will be using alternative weather apps going forward.

theDudesmummy · 10/10/2024 19:17

I use the Weather & Radar app but always liked the BBC's interface.

It's all right, if you're a middle aged man or a postie, it's still 'shorts' weather! 💪

itwasnevermine · 10/10/2024 08:39

I think it's safe to say that if these winds genuinely appeared we wouldn't be able to be worried about it!

That's true! Instead of "Around the World in 80 Days" it would be "Around the World in 0.80 seconds". 😳😉

Once, in my state, the weather board showed the temperature for the next day of 846 degrees F., for a town about 45 miles from us. I was worried that my A/C would be running an awful lot, but then figured I'd save money just cooking food outside on the sidewalk.😉

I love weather "whoopsies", they always make my day!

Thank you all for sharing your wind speeds. I hope you all remained safe and got your wash dried super quick. 😎😆

laraitopbanana · 11/10/2024 17:51

Ours says sunny and light…erm…nope!!

J3001 · 11/10/2024 19:11

I'm sure the eco-cassandras at Al-BBC were crestfallen that the 1,400 mph hurricanes were only a product of a fault in their app.

Mamanyt · 11/10/2024 23:29

Bodeganights · 10/10/2024 06:11

I've just looked for where I live and it too is hurricane force winds of 2682 miles an hour. I'm pretty certain at those speeds, not a single house would still be standing.

LOL, at those wind speeds, there would be nothing left but bedrock! Jes' sayin'
