Storm Ciarán

This is an early heads up.

Models have consistently been bringing in a deep low pressure for sometime over Wed/Thurs. As is often the case, details are yet to be nailed down, but some of the models are producing some severe gusts - southern coastal winds of up to 90mph and more widespread inland winds of around 60mph. With storms, comes rain too unfortunately. A wobble in the track could take them further north or, keep it all in France. Exactly when and where the low pressure develops will make a big difference in the outcome. More details to follow.

If the storm is named, it will be Storm Ciaran. At that point I'll ask MNHQ to change the title appropriately.

We're in Suffolk. Oddly calm this morning following last night which kept waking me up. Some local flooding and school closures. We're fairly rural and the school WhatsApp chats have pictures of people trapped in due to flooding. Our school closed early last time as the roads were getting difficult.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/11/2023 07:48

It appears that Ciarán may have taken a slightly more southerly track than expected, which would keep the winds a little further south.

In Bournemouth. Wind picking up again now - it was super calm when I got up 6:30. Not too much damage or local flooding although I think the test will be the high tide at Poole harbour at 10:45

Cornwallsfaveflappyj · 02/11/2023 07:51

this reminds me of Autumn/ winter 2013 - 2014. does anyone else remember the quick succession of storms?

RafaistheKingofClay · 02/11/2023 07:51

FoleyHuck glad you and the rest of the Jersey people are ok. Jersey Evening Post are making their online edition free to everyone today in case anyone wasn’t aware.

Hope fellow donkeys are doing ok down there too. Have checked in with parents and they seem to be doing alright. Sounds like Jersey got the worst of it.

I’m making a run to work in the calm of the eye. Hoping I haven’t mistimed it. Already aware of at least 1 diversion on the bus route due to flooding.

TimeFlying · 02/11/2023 07:52

Just outside of Salisbury here
Its quiet. Weird. Expect it to pick up again soon

Sussex here- very calm oddly

yes, same here at that time, just about 7 miles inland from Hastings/Bexhill. Got up a bit since then but we seem relatively unscathed. Nothing amiss in the garden, so Im wondering if we still have it coming. The met office warnings are still on Amber, but the wind gusts in the detailed forcast are about 20mph less than yesterday. I was waiting for the 6am peak, but it didnt happen. Boy's school open so he is eating breakfast and I will take him down in next half hour

EasternStandard · 02/11/2023 07:53

Loads of rain in the night, still raining but not as heavy

Purplerain0505 · 02/11/2023 07:56

South coast of Cornwall here and it’s pretty miserable but it’s just like an extra windy, rainy day. The house keeps shaking but it’s not unusual. Off to do the school run shortly.

TheseLegsDefinitelyUsedToBeLonger · 02/11/2023 07:56

Hi all, in Kent here - windy and downpours during the night (thankfully slept through them but had an update from my other half who said it was terrifying being downstairs) then it brightened up and went still. Now it's lashing with rain again. Looks like getting windier from around 10am here (East Kent area). Hope everyone is doing okay this morning.

Yep, makes sense, when the airport forecasts were re-run in the early hours of the AM a lot of the wind predictions for the southern UK airports for this morning, especially for wind direction, had changed significantly from the forecasts that were run yesterday PM.

Startingagainandagain · 02/11/2023 08:02

Kent coast: big gusts of wind and still raining, but not as hard as last night.

Sky is getting brighter though...

No issue with electricity or internet.

Oh very much! On the last one we drove down to Sennen then spent the day going back up the coast to north cornwall, watching the sea along the way. It was the biggest I've ever seen it. Trevose head was extraordinary! (wind was onshore thankfully)

Had a cool moment at Sennen with an intense burst of hail & while it happened the waves just flattened out.

RagzRebooted · 02/11/2023 08:05

@NettleTea same here, I'm a few miles more inland than you. Also gusts downgraded here from the predicted peak. I'm about to brave the drive to work.
Glad the thread's islanders have survived and hoping you all get some sleep soon!

Littlebitpsycho · 02/11/2023 08:07

Finished work safely on the south coast. Still eerily quiet although its just started raining again.

Just heading out with the dog quickly while it's still calm. Luckily I WFH and DDs secondary school is closed.

Fingers crossed not too much more to come here, thinking of everyone over the Channel 🙏❤️

Yes, I remember that. At Christmas we drove from Oxfordshire to Somerset and there were floods all the way. All the fields were flooded, the rivers had broken their banks and at times the road turned to river. We didn't know if we'd get there or not and I've rarely arrived anywhere so frazzled as after that journey. When we arrived OH's brother kept saying 'Where have you been?' and I wanted to slap him!

Flickersy · 02/11/2023 08:10

London here. Very heavy rain earlier but gone now. Some strong gusts of wind overnight but nothing severe. I'm venturing to the office this morning, then I have a long drive tonight in theory but I'll be keeping a close eye on the weather / roads - I can always go tomorrow morning if need be.

BastardtheCat · 02/11/2023 08:11

Swansea is quiet. No gusty winds but some rain. Seem to have escaped this. Take care everyone.

Cornwallsfaveflappyj · 02/11/2023 08:13

Very calm here now. so calm we have our patio doors wide open to air the house (humidity problems! Cornwall after all!)

@Caerulea I remember the seas so vividly! We lived in Porthtowan at the time. I have romanticised the memories but it was scary at the time!

South Hampshire, few miles out of Southampton. Significant rain yesterday evening and windy.

schools closed (we fall under Hampshire CC) and it’s so calm, not even a rustle.

I must be very close to you. It's very still here. Calm before the storm?

Lindy2 · 02/11/2023 08:16

Loads of rain overnight in Surrey and very windy.

It's calm, dry and mild now though.

Is the storm done now or is round 2 coming a bit later?

The cat's just ventured outside and I'd like to bring her in again before the weather turns again (if it's going to).

Wind has just started to pick up, I guess we’re coming out of the eye. Good luck fellow Hampshire dwellers!

Cornwallsfaveflappyj · 02/11/2023 06:09

the a38 is a terrible road so please be careful . I'm sure it'll be blocked today due to trees and floods so keep an eye out

We are supposed to be heading to Paignton in Devon today from the Midlands, so a similar journey. We are also wondering whether or not to postpone until tomorrow. I've very much wanting to go tomorrow, my dh wants to go today Hmm

Costalife · 02/11/2023 08:21

Amber warning cancelled in West Sussex.. Yellow instead now. Nothing more than a normal windy day here
