Storm Ciarán

This is an early heads up.

Models have consistently been bringing in a deep low pressure for sometime over Wed/Thurs. As is often the case, details are yet to be nailed down, but some of the models are producing some severe gusts - southern coastal winds of up to 90mph and more widespread inland winds of around 60mph. With storms, comes rain too unfortunately. A wobble in the track could take them further north or, keep it all in France. Exactly when and where the low pressure develops will make a big difference in the outcome. More details to follow.

If the storm is named, it will be Storm Ciaran. At that point I'll ask MNHQ to change the title appropriately.

@FoleyHuck hope it calms down for you soon, poor cat
@Sideorderofchips thinking about you too

DarklySparkly · 02/11/2023 07:18

@FoleyHuck@Sideorderofchips i woke up a few times in the night and was thinking about you and everyone on the CI. Hope you’re both okay, the images from there this morning are wild

TopBitchoftheWitches · 02/11/2023 07:18

North Essex here. Woken a few times during the night due to wind and rain. Calm now though.

Hope all are ok.

Deathraystare · 02/11/2023 07:20

I will be down in Kent this weekend to see my Brother. He has already warned me about the rain. Mind you we have had plenty in London, thanks! Which may make you wonder why I am wearing those knitted fabric style Skecher like shoes and not one of the 4-5 pair boots I have..... I guess I had better wear Boots down to Kent!

Bloody rain and wind kept me awake last night. I am not normally bothered too much by the rain but come on" Bloody relentless (is that the right word?)

disappearingfish · 02/11/2023 07:20

Stuck at Gatwick airport as all trains to the south west have been cancelled this morning, hoping to get away this afternoon...

Luckily we have a hotel room and although it's really inconvenient to be stuck here at least we're safe and dry.

Swimbikerunmummy · 02/11/2023 07:22

Good Morning from the north coast of Guernsey. It’s wild but definitely sounds like Jersey have had it worse.

MadCatLady27 · 02/11/2023 07:23

It's currently tipping it down, I'm in the spare room at the back of the house and can hear something creaking, which I'm wondering is the window. We have house cats so going to ask DH to keep that door shut today just in case

Dodgy fence panels have been saved by the wind direction

Been told work is open as normal so obviously expected to go into the office 🤷

It seems to be easing but looking at that graph we are about to get the eye

NoMoreCapsLock · 02/11/2023 07:29

Met Office forecast here in South Kent has our winds at their highest over the next hour, then dying down slowly. 68 mph gusts now.

Morning everyone, hope everyone's ok.

FoleyHuck ~ (I think from reading last night you're in Jersey/Guernsey.) I think looking at the current position of the storm, you might have a few more hours of it before the storm moves away.

Current position of Storm. Looks like those in Portsmouth/Southampton are in the 'eye' at the moment and that's why it's quiet/still for them.

Yes. I'm between the 2 and have been told we are currently in eye. It's eerily calm and quiet right now which is actually very disconcerting!

LeviOsaNotLeviosaa · 02/11/2023 07:30

We are also just up over the hill from Portsmouth, and it is so quiet. Not a bird to be heard, not a breath of wind or drop of rain. It’s almost creepy. The rain was sideways around 1.30am, hammering into our south facing bedroom window. DH snored through it!

WreckTangled · 02/11/2023 07:31

Blue sky here (in the eye)

GloriaSmud · 02/11/2023 07:31

Whatthetrolley ~ that is another storm. At the moment, it looks it might give the Channel Islands (again Sad ) strong winds for a while, overnight Friday into Saturday. High amounts of rain is going to be a problem again.

FoleyHuck · 02/11/2023 07:34

Morning! We're still here, and by some fluke our roof is still here, although I suspect sections of it have lost their coating, and we may well have lost the lift housing door or ladder, and the water tank lid.

We've lost our communal garden wall, and a window in a corridor has gone through.

Not going out to check the car for a good while yet as it's still very wild, and the odd gust is shaking the foundations of the building still.

I've let the cat be free from his box but he's only gone as far as my feet. Poor love Sad

I'm about to let my boss know that I will not in fact be WFH today, having not slept since yesterday morning.

WinchSparkle80 · 02/11/2023 07:34

South Hampshire, few miles out of Southampton. Significant rain yesterday evening and windy.

schools closed (we fall under Hampshire CC) and it’s so calm, not even a rustle.

WinchSparkle80 · 02/11/2023 07:35

@FoleyHuck stay safe x

LilyGlobe · 02/11/2023 07:37

South coast here too. Forecast wind & gust speeds appear to have been reduced by metoffice, which I’m taking to be a good thing, although we’re still under an amber warning.

Sending love to anyone in Jersey & Guernsey. I can’t imagine how frightening it’s been.

Tabbytabs · 02/11/2023 07:38

In Southampton, very eerily calm. Just let the cats out before it kicks off! All the schools are closed, ds’s college is open though. Fingers crossed it’s not too bad for everyone.

thegreylady · 02/11/2023 07:38

Is anyone in Plymouth? My student granddaughter lives there and I couldn’t contact her as she just changed her phone.

criminallyvulgar · 02/11/2023 07:39

Also between Portsmouth and Southampton and in this eerily quiet eye. WFH today so I can keep the cats calm. DCat1 never left my side last night. Most unusual for him.

Sparkletastic · 02/11/2023 07:40

HilaryThorpe · 02/11/2023 07:08

We are watching live coverage on French TV. Much of the coverage seems to be devoted to whether the local boulangerie is open or not. 😂

Love this! French have their priorities in order 😄

Torrential rain in East Sussex. Thunder and lightning moving in. Wind is odd - completely still one minute then sudden strong gusts.

I'm.in Plymouth. We haven't lost power or Internet where we are. It's blowing but not terrifying.

I’ve just this second heard from my student son in Plymouth who says “I’m watching what appears to be a hurricane outside my window”. 😱

Sideorderofchips · 02/11/2023 07:46

Like @FoleyHuck ive barely slept. Fell asleep due to exhaustion at about 6am.

Its still blowing madly here. It's not due to die down till 9am.i can't go check for damage till then. Amazingly fence still there. Bbq and garden table totalled.

Delphigirl · 02/11/2023 07:47

He is right on the Hoe though
