This is an early heads up.

Models have consistently been bringing in a deep low pressure for sometime over Wed/Thurs. As is often the case, details are yet to be nailed down, but some of the models are producing some severe gusts - southern coastal winds of up to 90mph and more widespread inland winds of around 60mph. With storms, comes rain too unfortunately. A wobble in the track could take them further north or, keep it all in France. Exactly when and where the low pressure develops will make a big difference in the outcome. More details to follow.

If the storm is named, it will be Storm Ciaran. At that point I'll ask MNHQ to change the title appropriately.

I remember that winter 10 years ago. So many people flooded out of their houses for Christmas and the inevitable spate of oh no, all my childrens' Christmas presents have been ruined and I have 3 pence to my name begging posts.

Just soggy up here in the NE and landing on already squelchy ground. Our front garden moat is looking mighty fine but it drains fairly quickly when the rain eases off. We are pretty high up, though.

Emanresu9 · 02/11/2023 08:21

still 90mph here in Guernsey. House and windows are rocking. But we luckily haven't had major damage at our house - others have tho judging by facebook. Especially in Jersey. The rest of the UK mainly looking peaceful!

Those of you in the far SE, please don't be lulled into thinking this is over, the winds will start to pick up.

The amber warning area has thankfully been reduced over the SE though reflecting the more southerly path of the storm. This will be of great relief to some, but of course we mustn't forget our neighbours over the channel.

this reminds me of Autumn/ winter 2013 - 2014. does anyone else remember the quick succession of storms?

Christmas 2013 was the worst. We were with my parents in Sussex - the power went out on 23rd Dec and stayed off until the 27th. My parents’ house is large, old and draughty so we were bloody freezing throughout. UK Power Networks were worse than useless as I recall.

Lovemychair · 02/11/2023 08:25

My lights keep flickering and its hammering down again.

WinchSparkle80 · 02/11/2023 08:27

@Unusualactualname hello 👋🏻

It is now slightly windy ish… friends on school whatsapp have said amber warning been removed in this area? not sure

TheDogsMother · 02/11/2023 08:27

Pretty quiet here in West Sussex right now. We are about 15 miles from the coast.

Coastalcreeksider · 02/11/2023 08:31

South coast where BBC reported from last night, very light rain at the moment, bit breezy but really, nothing like what I expected to see this morning.

mauvish · 02/11/2023 08:33

Oop North so just wet here (no change there!) --- we had our last big storm just a couple of weeks ago, when lots of trees came down and I couldn't travel south as there was no way through or round Chesterfield due to flooding. My local park was shut as the river running through it rose by about 6 feet and it was deemed too dangerous (a kid died there 15 years ago in a less severe storm flood). The river level hasn't gone back down to its usual since then, though of course it's no longer over the banks.

My daughter's inlaws are currently in NW France, haven't heard if they (or more likely their house) have survived the night.

Good luck to all of you still caught up in it, and for those of you for whom it is blowing over, hope the damage isn't too severe.

spitefulandbadgrammar · 02/11/2023 08:36

It’s turned into a regular rainy day here in Eastbourne. They’ve cancelled bin collections though.

FoleyHuck · 02/11/2023 08:36

All of our group chats are now awash with news and pictures and videos from around Jersey.

The assumed tornado about midnight has picked up one of those massive green Salvation Army clothing banks and carried it down the road. I've also seen a video of a whole granite wall come down on a car park, not sure where that is though.

Wind has dropped very slightly but it's high tide in 5 minutes so the low lying coast roads will be getting the brunt now Sad

Vintagevixen · 02/11/2023 08:36

Hastings here and winds have definitely picked up again 😬 and torrential rain. Assume the eye is moving and we are on the south side of it - my friend in Brighton says it is calm there!

WaitingForRainAgain · 02/11/2023 08:37

On the coast , east of Portsmouth in West Sussex. Wild wind last night but completely silent just now. No wind, no rain. Assuming it will pick up again later

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 02/11/2023 08:38

SE London - heavy rain which continued overnight but nothing too bad.

Iwantitidontwantit · 02/11/2023 08:39

In Portsmouth and the sky has become really, really dark. Raining lightly now and can see they've moved the ber warming for further along

Littlebitpsycho · 02/11/2023 08:07

Finished work safely on the south coast. Still eerily quiet although its just started raining again.

Just heading out with the dog quickly while it's still calm. Luckily I WFH and DDs secondary school is closed.

Fingers crossed not too much more to come here, thinking of everyone over the Channel 🙏❤️

Looks like we're downgraded to yellow warning now for wind

itsgettingweird · 02/11/2023 08:42

Tabbytabs · 02/11/2023 08:19

Wind has just started to pick up, I guess we’re coming out of the eye. Good luck fellow Hampshire dwellers!

Edited

There seems to be quite a few is here!! Especially the coastal part!

Looks like we are now a yellow warning rather than amber.

But winds are picking up

caramond · 02/11/2023 08:42

Met Office and BBC Weather forecasts look really different in my area for the rest of today and tomorrow. Is Met Office generally more accurate?

MyCircumference · 02/11/2023 08:43

east sussex
buses not running currently

enchantedsquirrelwood · 02/11/2023 08:45

Hope Channel Islands MNers are ok - it looks to have been quite terrifying there. Saw a photo of St Aubin's Bay which looked to have been taken from the Somerville Hotel - we know that area well. I imagine there are a lot of trees down along the Railway Walk too.

Very calm where I am at the moment, but due to start picking up in a couple of hours.

The warning has been downgraded from amber to yellow. My HT friend is regretting closing her school!

met office is suggesting we are getting an increase for a couple of hours, then a slight decline, then another increase at 5pm

Worldgonecrazy · 02/11/2023 08:50

We were okay, wet, windy and stormy, but just found out that four miles east a mini tornado went through the village. Weird how things like that are so localised.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/11/2023 08:56
