Storm Ciarán

This is an early heads up.

Models have consistently been bringing in a deep low pressure for sometime over Wed/Thurs. As is often the case, details are yet to be nailed down, but some of the models are producing some severe gusts - southern coastal winds of up to 90mph and more widespread inland winds of around 60mph. With storms, comes rain too unfortunately. A wobble in the track could take them further north or, keep it all in France. Exactly when and where the low pressure develops will make a big difference in the outcome. More details to follow.

If the storm is named, it will be Storm Ciaran. At that point I'll ask MNHQ to change the title appropriately.

Storms are named when they are likely to have amber or red warnings associated with them. The names come from a collaboration between the Met Office, Met Èireann and the Dutch national weather service. Hence Babet.

Thank you - I'll wondered about Babet, too.

We are west Devon, very wet here but not windy atm and I haven’t been woke with any throughout the night.

DD’s are at two secondary’s between them one in Plymouth and the other outside and both closed.

Im working this morning also in Plymouth but don’t drive and it’s two busses for me to get there and trying to work out if worth it!

I certainly be a drowned rat at the very least!

Vebrithien · 02/11/2023 06:36

Good morning all, I hope you've made it through the night physically safe.

The posts from those of you on the Channel Islands sound terrifying. @Sideorderofchips , I 'recognise' you from the Christmas threads, I hope you are okay. You too, @FoleyHuck .

North Somerset/Bath area, and lots of rain through the night. Our road is flooded, but the wind had dropped and it is eerily calm here again.

listsandbudgets · 02/11/2023 06:38

south Devon coast.. light breeze and it clearly rained over night

i've gone back to bed for now but will head towards the sea in a couple of hours and have a look

Sausagis · 02/11/2023 06:41

Guernsey. Gusting 78mph and the roof is making some alarming noises Confused

FuzzyPuffling · 02/11/2023 06:43

Plymouth. The eye has passed over us now and here's Round Two.
It's gusty and roaring out there, and raining heavily too.

Drenchend · 02/11/2023 06:45

Hugs to those in rhe worst areas.

Has it passed through now?

Itsnotchristmasyet · 02/11/2023 06:47

I’m in Cornwall.
I slept like a baby last night and wasn’t woken once.
The wind is not bad right now either.

Some of my friends seem to have had much stronger wind in Cornwall than I have.

Itsnotchristmasyet · 02/11/2023 06:48

I’ve just heard that this is apparently the eye of the storm, which is why it’s so calm right now.

Pushkinini · 02/11/2023 06:51

Just woken up in North Cornwall. It's windy but doesn't sound as bad as I thought it might. Had a quick look out of the window and our fence is still up. Thats been a casualty before in stormy weather but DH did a good job of making it more sturdy since nice the last time. And our dustbin is still there. Usually this flies off down the road.

Toodlepip100 · 02/11/2023 06:58

Kent coast, thunder 4.30am…..sounds awful out there, going out to check if should send kids to school?

bouncydog · 02/11/2023 07:01

West coast of Guernsey. Worst we’ve had for a long time. House is shaking in some of the gusts but fingers crossed no damage. Read that one family in Jersey had windows blown in and are waiting for the fire brigade to assist them. Hopefully will start to die down in the next couple of hours when the tide turns.

Worldgonecrazy · 02/11/2023 07:01

Two miles inland from Lyme Bay here. Lots of thunder and lightning around midnight. High tide came and went, the sea was almost level with the harbour wall but no breaches (it breached last weekend thanks to the full moon). We had to go to secure the boat and several road/esplanades were closed just in case.

Some flooding on the roads as the fields run off, but expected to clear quickly as the drains are cleared.

Thankfully not the worst we have seen here, I think the wind direction was in our favour.

Good luck to those still dealing with Ciaran and her aftermath.

Whatthetrolley · 02/11/2023 07:01

Thanks @BabbleBee

What's the red out in the Atlantic? Another storm???

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/11/2023 07:04

Good morning all, will try and catch up with how everyone is faring.

Woken up here in guernsey. It’s terrifying out there but sounds like jersey have had it even worse. It’s still going here ferociously and I don’t know how the dogs are going to get out for a wee!!

Taylorscat · 02/11/2023 07:06

I think we might be in the eye now, it’s completely calm. So weird . Surrey.

Emanresu9 · 02/11/2023 07:07

@bouncydog Guernsey here too but thankfully not west coast. South (st Martin). Tide is rising too so stay safe on the west. Windows blown in was my fear. I’m too scared to go downstairs and check but sure it’s fine.

HilaryThorpe · 02/11/2023 07:08

We are watching live coverage on French TV. Much of the coverage seems to be devoted to whether the local boulangerie is open or not. 😂

Taylorscat · 02/11/2023 07:08

Although eye looks like it’s over the sea- how far does it spread? Maybe we’ve still got rounds 1 and 2 to come! It was raining so hard last night and the dog decided he needed a poo at 3am. I don’t think it was windy but I wasn’t really awake .

Lovemychair · 02/11/2023 07:09

I hate high winds , Hope everyone is safe. I'm in Essex, we've obviously had rain overnight, in fact it's been raining for days but it's now very still out there.

Caerulea · 02/11/2023 07:11

Morning all, I hope you're all safe & ok. Just about to go read through. The modern coast is getting a bit of a pounding now, there's a low rumble to the wind you don't hear often.

Jersey guys, that whole area - fuck I hope you're alright! It was getting truly wild there by the time I fell asleep.
