Storm Ciarán

This is an early heads up.

Models have consistently been bringing in a deep low pressure for sometime over Wed/Thurs. As is often the case, details are yet to be nailed down, but some of the models are producing some severe gusts - southern coastal winds of up to 90mph and more widespread inland winds of around 60mph. With storms, comes rain too unfortunately. A wobble in the track could take them further north or, keep it all in France. Exactly when and where the low pressure develops will make a big difference in the outcome. More details to follow.

If the storm is named, it will be Storm Ciaran. At that point I'll ask MNHQ to change the title appropriately.

Sending good wishes
daylight will come soon
hang in there
So sorry you’re going through this

Veraper · 02/11/2023 04:46

Oxon/Berks border here. Just very heavy rain. Have the fire window wide open as I’m under the weather with high temp.

TenaciousTortoise · 02/11/2023 04:47

Twitter reporting vicious tornado and thunderstorms in jersey too

TenaciousTortoise · 02/11/2023 04:49

207kmph gust reported nw France and storm not yet peaked I believe

I think anyone not on south coast of England can assume they’ll be fine, maybe no need for updates to tell us no wind as don’t think it’s really forecast to hit?

MyBedIsMySpiritualHome · 02/11/2023 04:50

morning all, we’re down in Cornwall, very noisy here, but amazingly we so far still have power! Sounds like buckets of water are being flung with force against the windows. Stay safe all.

OneMoreStepAlongTheRoadIGo · 02/11/2023 05:03

My bit of Bournemouth sounds quiet this morning. So assume we did miss the worst as predicted when we were downgraded. Some schools had closed but looks like my kids will be open then if it's not been too bad.

Getabloominmoveon · 02/11/2023 05:05

It’s been wild and wet on the Sussex Coast. We’re a few minutes back from the sea which is good as protected by other buildings around. The trees around are still standing and I haven’t heard anything flying about. So far….

SaltyFulmar · 02/11/2023 05:15

Another on the Sussex coast. Obviously very windy but not raining, can hear a car alarm in the distance. Our trees look very bendy right now!

Cornwallsfaveflappyj · 02/11/2023 05:22

I'm awake due to the storm. and power cuts. it's so noisy out there. Stay safe everyone x

NoMoreCapsLock · 02/11/2023 05:25

Kent Coast. Wind gusts shaking building. I think this is supposed to last till late afternoon.

Sideorderofchips · 02/11/2023 05:28

TenaciousTortoise · 02/11/2023 04:47

Yes... Yes they were

Genuinely scary to be here right now

WreckTangled · 02/11/2023 05:38

Met office seems to have lowered our wind gusts for today. I slept through the worst of it but dh said the wind was really loud, you couldn’t hear the rain over it even though it was chucking it down. I expect ds could have gone to school although I don’t know what the roads are like and the wind woke him at 4am 🥱

Littlebitpsycho · 02/11/2023 05:47

I'm about to head out to work (freelance groom working outside with horses)

South Coast between Portsmouth and Southampton. Eerily silent here, local news says tree down on the A32 so I'll need to detour around that..

Can't decide whether that's it or whether we're currently in 'the eye' in which case I'll finish work as quickly as possible and head home!

Grapewrath · 02/11/2023 05:47

Sussex here- very calm oddly

Snozzlemaid · 02/11/2023 05:50

Cornwall. Woken a short while ago to very heavy rain and very strong gusts now.
Was all quiet when I was awake about 3.

Stormyseas82 · 02/11/2023 05:55

Reports online saying Cornwall starting to get a battering now. I'm in North Devon and no rain and can't hear any wind. I'm assuming it's on its way if just hit Cornwall..

Karmaisagod · 02/11/2023 05:56

Morning, after some advice from those in Bristol, Exeter and Plymouth and with experience of motorway driving in this kind of weather.

I'm due to drive from Kidderminster to Cornwall today. Mostly M5 then A38. Had initially planned to leave at 7am but it looked like I'd be hitting the worst of it in the Southwest at the worst time. The forecast showed the wind calming down in Bristol around 2pm, and Exeter around 5, so now thinking of setting off around 12 but keeping an eye on the weather beforehand.

I've no experience of motorway driving in high winds but I imagine it can vary from unpleasant to scary to downright dangerous? Do you think later will be better? Should I postpone altogether?

I'm same area.

Yes eerily quiet here.

Read about the tree but it's clear now.

Looks like our worst time will be midday but also looks like it'll be less windy than originally predicted.

the a38 is a terrible road so please be careful . I'm sure it'll be blocked today due to trees and floods so keep an eye out

FoleyHuck · 02/11/2023 06:11

DH & I have got dressed and put the cat in his box, so concerned are we about the roof now.

We could move into the interior of the apartment building and down a floor but we're worried about opening internal doors.

I was hoping for improvement after 5am and it's only got worse.

SeaGlassTreasure · 02/11/2023 06:25

Morning from Guernsey. Sounds horrendous outside. We live just off the coast (less than 50m from beach). Flooding just up the road from us. Fences look like they’re up for now. Lights just twitched. Reports of multiple trees down and road closures on island.

Hope everyone stays safe.

heldinadream · 02/11/2023 06:26

@FoleyHuck hope you're OK (followed your pregnancy thread). Be safe!
Just heard radio reports of roofs off in channel islands and people in shelters. Fingers crossed for you to be fine, you don't need this. Flowers

Whoops intermittent signal posted twice soz.

GloriaSmud · 02/11/2023 06:31

Morning everyone, hope everyone's ok.

FoleyHuck ~ (I think from reading last night you're in Jersey/Guernsey.) I think looking at the current position of the storm, you might have a few more hours of it before the storm moves away.

Current position of Storm. Looks like those in Portsmouth/Southampton are in the 'eye' at the moment and that's why it's quiet/still for them.
