This is an early heads up.

Models have consistently been bringing in a deep low pressure for sometime over Wed/Thurs. As is often the case, details are yet to be nailed down, but some of the models are producing some severe gusts - southern coastal winds of up to 90mph and more widespread inland winds of around 60mph. With storms, comes rain too unfortunately. A wobble in the track could take them further north or, keep it all in France. Exactly when and where the low pressure develops will make a big difference in the outcome. More details to follow.

If the storm is named, it will be Storm Ciaran. At that point I'll ask MNHQ to change the title appropriately.

@BiscuitBrewInMyBigBlueMug hello neighbour from here near Sittingbourne! Not too bad yet here, although one of my idiot cats had just come in soaked to the skin!

Fbifan · 02/11/2023 03:06

@FoleyHuck ah thanks, I don’t have that. Loads of trees down here in guernsey. I hear you lot have had hail larger than golfballs. Hope you stay safe

Yep I've never heard anything like it, we're under a flat roof and it sounded like they must be football sized. They broke windows in some places. I can't imagine my car has escaped without some big dints at least.

Stay safe over there too!

NoMoreCapsLock · 02/11/2023 03:19

South Kent coast. Can hear wind and rain through my earplugs in the south side of the building. Hope this is the worst.

MalteserGeezee · 02/11/2023 03:20

Sarf London checking in. About an hour of furious wind and rain. And now nothing. Literally nothing. Like someone flipped a switch. Guess this could be the "eye" of the storm or something? Thinking of those right in the firing line

Paintingfoxmas · 02/11/2023 03:20

Rainy and windy in Herts but with an 'edge'.

RagzRebooted · 02/11/2023 03:24

I think the eye of the storm is still down in the south west, from what I can see on the radar websites.
DH back from his London job, said it was mostly OK up there, with occasional torrential rain, but he wasn't needed for long (quick top up of some heavy plant then back home!) so got home around 2am.
Anxious cat has spent the last hour or two trying to persuade me to be a lap! She's usually happy to sleep next to me, but really, really wants a lap tonight. Unfortunately, I can't sleep on my back!

RagzRebooted · 02/11/2023 03:27

@FoleyHuck hope you're OK. Wind radar showing rather fierce over you guys right now.

StopGo · 02/11/2023 03:31

Surrey Hills, it's been very wet and windy but has suddenly stopped. Eerily quiet and still. Dog very unsettled.

Terrified, but so far holding up. I've read 3-5am would be peak here, so just trying to get through it a minute at a time. I've had an hour's sleep. DH is snoozing peacefully beside me 😏

Flimpychunk · 02/11/2023 03:35

Was woken by the wind an hour ago but it seems to have stopped here in Surrey. Our fireworks display went ahead earlier at 5.30 when it was completely calm, in a window between rain and wind warnings, which still feels fairly miraculous.

DC has a school trip to London tomorrow and I’m worried that they’ll be travelling back when the winds are forecast to pick up again.

NOTANUM · 02/11/2023 03:38

It looks bad in the Channel Islands with even a suspect tornado video shared on Twitter. Hang in there mumsnetters.

Not expected to hit the South East until later. This is the calm before the storm.

I’m on the outskirts of SLondon - The wind woke me up around 2:30 but it seems to have calmed down a lot now.

HilaryThorpe · 02/11/2023 03:54

Very noisy in Normandy and house is creaking and groaning. No idea what is happening outside.

verdantverdure · 02/11/2023 04:04

We've got some pretty heavy rain here in Surrey, but bit as bad as elsewhere.

I am also up with an unsettled dog.

It's strange as it goes through periods of really heavy rain and wind and then goes eerily calm for 10 minutes then picks up again. Never known a storm to do that.

I've felt so physically anxious today for no reason and can't relax amd sleep now. Also have a headache. Wonder if it's the weird air pressure changes.

WestwardHo1 · 02/11/2023 04:08

West Cornwall. Been woken by the wind after the eye went through . Keep reminding myself that this is an old house and it's stood that whole tim but bloody hell it's noisy. Been 70mph - we've had way stronger than that before but I think there's been so much hype about this one I'm nervous.

Just thought of homeless person in a tent I saw the other day 😢. I can't imagine

HilaryThorpe · 02/11/2023 04:11

Just seen pictures of a crane breaking in half in Brest. We are 40km inland so not as bad here. Lights are flickering on and off though.

tropicaltailwind · 02/11/2023 04:11

Sending good wishes to all of you going through it. Storms like this are no joke. I live on a hurricane-prone Caribbean island, & have people I love in Jersey & Guernsey, Kent, Dorset & Norfolk coast & I am watching this huge storm and worrying for everyone in harm’s way. Please stay inside if it’s coming at you, and lock windows and doors tightly - close all interior doors too - if you get wind ingress through a broken window the pressure can lift the roof off.

If it is howling and then goes weirdly quiet it may be the eye moving over you. Remain inside; the second half is usually worse and hits without warning.

FoleyHuck · 02/11/2023 04:21

Something metal is crashing about on our apartment roof now. Water tanks or part of the lift housing or access ladders, not sure. I'm sitting bolt upright in bed, sweating buckets and trying not to cry.

Sideorderofchips · 02/11/2023 04:23

Me and kids all now camped in the lounge. I haven't slept. I can hear things being blown around.

The thunder and hail earlier terrified me.

My eldest daughters friend was in a house hit by the tornado. She's got cuts all over from the glass. It destroyed an entire estate

NOTANUM · 02/11/2023 04:23

Yikes that’s scary a@FoleyHuck . Hopefully it is someone’s illegal satellite dish so small..

FoleyHuck · 02/11/2023 04:25

Handhold @Sideorderofchips. DH just woke up and muttered about it being a bit loud. Yeah it is mate. You're not wrong.
