This is an early heads up.

Models have consistently been bringing in a deep low pressure for sometime over Wed/Thurs. As is often the case, details are yet to be nailed down, but some of the models are producing some severe gusts - southern coastal winds of up to 90mph and more widespread inland winds of around 60mph. With storms, comes rain too unfortunately. A wobble in the track could take them further north or, keep it all in France. Exactly when and where the low pressure develops will make a big difference in the outcome. More details to follow.

If the storm is named, it will be Storm Ciaran. At that point I'll ask MNHQ to change the title appropriately.

It’s very quiet and still here - Surrey/Sussex border. No wind at all at the moment.

CaveMum · 01/11/2023 18:02

Stay safe all.

Makinglists · 01/11/2023 18:07

@FuzzyPuffling Heles - all schools in the Trust are closed

FoleyHuck · 01/11/2023 18:13

Thanks @DarklySparkly. We've got all our tech and power banks charging now, dug out the big torch, cat carrier ready if it's needed and we'll be sleeping in stuff we could rush out of the door in.

I'm hoping that manic over preparation will summon Murphy's Law and none of it will be needed.

nannynick · 01/11/2023 18:15

On it's way. Pressure at Lands End PWS (Personal Weather Station) has been dropping over the last few hours. 977.55 hPa at 18:12. Wind gusts around 46mph.

Looks like BCP (Poole/bournemouth) has been downgraded so schools and my work will be open 🙈

SequentialAnalyst · 01/11/2023 18:19

@FoleyHuck Unless you are a binge drinker or an abstaining alcoholic, your DC in there will not get foetal alcohol syndrome from you taking a glass of Wine(or even 2) in exceptional circumstances as a one-off. Don't tell anyone I said that, though. It is a secret known only to the ancient ones, and I fear a flaming.Halloween Confused

Back in the day, my DM and her peers were advised to drink a bottle of stout a day while pregnant...

FoleyHuck · 01/11/2023 18:24

@SequentialAnalyst I haven't ruled out a glass later and we've got a nice bottle in, but in truth I don't really fancy one.

It's crazy, as pre-pregnancy I'd rarely not fancy one (I didn't always have one, I hasten to add. I just often had the taste for a glass of red).

Raining here now. So it begins.

MonZb · 01/11/2023 18:28

Eerily still and cold here on the Somerset/Wiltshire border. Heavy rain on and off all day and very windy for a short time this afternoon.

Ears have been slightly hurting because of the dropping of barometric pressure.

RafaistheKingofClay · 01/11/2023 18:31

Eerily still and quiet as I left work just now. Very much a calm before the storm sort of feel.

Stay safe channel island dwellers.

bookworm14 · 01/11/2023 18:33

Ciaràn already looking pretty impressive on the radar. Stay safe, everyone!

From Portsmouth, it's been a very calm and quiet day zo far & actually it's rained far less than any day lately. I guess it's literally the calm before the storm 🤔

I'm thinking so!

We are just outside and many schools closed tomorrow.

Swim training cancelled in morning (Mountbatten!) because of expected weather - and not really ideal travelling there in it at 4.45am 🤣🤣🤣

Calmdown14 · 01/11/2023 18:39

Good luck from the areas that have just been through it.

It is easy to be complacent but anyone in doubt as to the damage that can be done should take a look at the Angus Council social media feeds - and I don't just mean the well publicised Brechin flooding. There are roads gone, bridges undermined and big chunks missing from the seafront.

Things can change rapidly in a few hours.

FuzzyPuffling · 01/11/2023 18:39

Although it's not hit us yet, one of my cats knows something is up and is hiding in corners with that big eyed look. I've got her snuggled up in a blanket with me.

Other cat has gone out (for now). He's hardcore.

JenniferBooth · 01/11/2023 18:58

Suppose i better get prepared for another lengthy power cut 23 hours in Feb of last year and i was told by the call centre that they cant work in the dark

sarahh96 · 01/11/2023 19:03

Brighton here. It's gone eerily still. Bit of wind and rain earlier but now totally still.
I fear for our roof, it's hanging by a thread as it is

MrsGasManridesagain · 01/11/2023 19:04

My friend has a flight leaving tomorrow morning from Gatwick to Rome. What do wr think the likelihood is of all being fine?!

mellongoose · 01/11/2023 19:06

South coast of Cornwall and it was really weird on my drive home from work.

I pulled in to a gateway (country lane) briefly to finish a phone call before dropping into a valley with no signal. Within 2 minutes it had gone from quite still and fair to dark and really windy. 💨

Have told my team to work from home tomorrow. Kids' school still open but relaxed about being there on time.

Hold tight and stay safe everyone.

Was that from a storm?

neighbour telling me not to travel for medical thing tomorrow, not sure if it's too much news...local forecast still just "very windy".

@FuzzyPuffling lol at "hardcore" kitty 😂

FoleyHuck · 01/11/2023 19:14

Jersey have declared a 'major incident' from midnight, with a multi agency control room set up at the police station.

JenniferBooth · 01/11/2023 19:16

YY @EmmaEmerald it was. I could paper a wall with the excuses ive heard from UKPN over the last ten years, They were told AGAIN last year that they were taking too long to get power back on and yet again said lessons will be learned. im not even rural Its a big housing estate.

SerpentEndBench · 01/11/2023 19:16

I hope it isn't as awful as predicted, everyone.

Daffodils9 · 01/11/2023 19:18

Eldest’s school is closed tomorrow (Devon). Nursery are going to make a judgement in the morning so have asked us to make a back up plan.

FuzzyPuffling · 01/11/2023 19:22

"Hardcore" kitty has come in now. He's all wet and looks like a punk.
