Storm Ciarán

This is an early heads up.

Models have consistently been bringing in a deep low pressure for sometime over Wed/Thurs. As is often the case, details are yet to be nailed down, but some of the models are producing some severe gusts - southern coastal winds of up to 90mph and more widespread inland winds of around 60mph. With storms, comes rain too unfortunately. A wobble in the track could take them further north or, keep it all in France. Exactly when and where the low pressure develops will make a big difference in the outcome. More details to follow.

If the storm is named, it will be Storm Ciaran. At that point I'll ask MNHQ to change the title appropriately.

SE London and not bad now yet.

Does anyone know what travel advice is for tomorrow if going into London?

Stormyseas82 · 01/11/2023 16:22

Just had an email from school saying closed tomorrow with advice from Devon County Council.

FuzzyPuffling · 01/11/2023 16:17

The seagulls here (normally very vocal on all the chimneys) have all vanished. I hope they have taken shelter.

@FuzzyPuffling perhaps they’re the ones that have arrived here?

handmademitlove · 01/11/2023 16:41

@WreckTangled I am in your county - the LA are helpful as always and so far have emailed all schools to let them know that they support whatever decision schools make about closing or staying open....... while reminding everyone of the importance of children not missing education and also of keeping everyone safe 🙄We have called it and gone for remote learning (secondary) as have a few other schools locally that we know of. Mostly due to staff being unlikely to travel (given highways and national rail both say don't travel unless necessary), rather than the school being dangerous...

Interesting! Both secondary and primary have said they’re open despite the police saying only travel if necessary. I’m NHS and we’re going virtual tomorrow…

DarklySparkly · 01/11/2023 16:49

Jersey Met has just issued a red warning for wind.

@FuzzyPuffling we will! They were busy picking over the ploughed fields last time I saw them.

WestwardHo1 · 01/11/2023 17:02

Well it's hit here. Coming soon to a location near you.

Am watching the ferry manoeuvres as they take evasive action

Makinglists · 01/11/2023 17:08

DS2's secondary school in Plymouth has been shut

@WestwardHo1 how wild is it? Looking at the live stream, the most intense area still seems to be off the coast to the south-west of Cornwall, yet to make landfall. Just wondering whether it’s going to get stronger yet?

where are you?

WestwardHo1 · 01/11/2023 17:17

It's sudden. There'll be strong southerly then a bit of a lull then it'll switch north westerly

It's very windy here already so hopefully it won't increase too much while the wind direction is still southerly because we're still a couple of hours off high tide. However the tide gets later as you go up the Channel of course. It'll get windier - so far it's only been 44mph

WestwardHo1 · 01/11/2023 17:17

icewoman · 01/11/2023 17:16

where are you?

Very far south west

piscofrisco · 01/11/2023 17:21

@GonnaGetGoingReturns London travel
Advice is stay home if you can for south london I think-although that's from the train companies (Thames Link, Southern, Gatwcih express etc). I think London is forecast rain mainly and gusty winds but nothing as bad as the far SE, SW and south coast.

Cornwallsfaveflappyj · 01/11/2023 17:25

WestwardHo1 · 01/11/2023 17:17

Very far south west

it's gone from being really windy here (TR11) to extreme quiet and stillness. I really don't like it because the stillness is so.....eerie!

and I know what's coming!

I'm flapping just a bit 😂

Unusualactualname · 01/11/2023 17:27

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/11/2023 15:08

Yes, close the door and any vents. Remove anything from your garden that might hit it.

Thank you.

Makinglists · 01/11/2023 17:34

After a squally day it's gone very still in Plymouth

Caerulea · 01/11/2023 17:34

@Cornwallsfaveflappyj with any luck, Coverack will shelter you a lil bit? Totally understand why you're nervous though 🙏

RagzRebooted · 01/11/2023 17:35

We're in the orange warning, south east. DS2's college (rural, agricultural college) has closed tomorrow. It's only 6 miles inland from Brighton and they're bussed in from a 30 miles radius, so probably sensible. Remote learning apparently.
DS1 and DD's secondary/6th form (further inland) still opening but warning this may change. That's a 6 mile bus trip, so not too bad.
I'm a 15 mile drive through some windy, tree lined roads on my way to work tomorrow. We've been warned to take care and leave early (Nurse, so essential I'm there really).

Expecting a power cut at least at home, as we had one a few weeks ago and another brief one at the weekend so we're always getting them. Teens been told to charge things and I'm thankful I bought extra large tealights yesterday for the pumpkins so we have plenty of candles. Also have storm lanterns, but I'm not keen on the smell. We've got a gas hob and kettle we use for camping, so those will be to hand as well.

Stay safe everyone, especially the channel dwellers, and thanks for the thread and updates as usual OYBBK.

SequentialAnalyst · 01/11/2023 17:38

If you look at the Met Office weather map, which you can go to from the forecast for your town, and watch the animation, then you will see why there are lulls and changes of wind direction.

If you click on days before today, it will begin by showing you the weather that has actually happened over the last couple of days. It's amazing to watch yesterday's weather unfolding before your very eyesShock

FoleyHuck · 01/11/2023 17:42

Swimbikerunmummy · 01/11/2023 15:45

@FoleyHuck are you in Jersey? Waving from across the water in Guernsey. Feeling pretty anxious. We’ve got a renovation project underway here so our house is boarded up on one side, hope it holds!

Hello! Yes we are. Just dashed home from work early as the Avenue is now closed until further notice. I'm quite worried about the roof of our apartment block and we're on the top floor, so a sleepless night ahead!

In normal circumstances I'd crack into a bottle of wine to take the edge off the worry but I'm 9 weeks pregnant 😫

DarklySparkly · 01/11/2023 17:52

@FoleyHuck holy moly. Keep us posted. Hope everything survives intact and for everyone else on the CI.
