Old thread : www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4626193-winter-weather-outlook

www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2022-12-31

Not quite January yet, but the weather warnings continue. Generally a mild outlook to come, though of course parts of Scotland will see more wintry weather on and off.

Oh that's such a shame. I still check on the thread at least once a day - generally with a coffee before early morning dog walk. I didn't get overexcited about the spring weather and pack away my heavy coats/hats/gloves because I follow this board!

I've blocked sex (!) and complained on site stuff. I realise that probably means I've no idea what's really going on in Active anymore.

AuntieEntity · 24/02/2023 16:59

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2023 11:10

Aww, thanks Trombone.

There are some very lurid headlines about next weeks weather taking us back into the arctic.
It looks chilly...

I am actively now looking for a new space to post weather updates I'm afraid. Unless MN can change the Sex topic back to not being in active and 90 days membership and chuck out everyone who has flooded into that board just to get their rocks off. I will give people a heads up if it comes to that. We will just make a weather community elsewhere.

Please let us know where you go! I follow your updates avidly.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2023 18:33

Justine's latest response has not helped.

I'm absolutely gutted at the thought of leaving. I've genuinely cried over the thought. You guys are the only reason I've not left. We get wonderful information such as that given by @DuchessDandelion which is genuinely helpful. Im going to think about things over the weekend.

Coming back to the weather, some wintry showers are possible next week in parts of the east, but staying largely dry for most. Some hints of more organised snow perhaps in the second week of March (!)

Please don't go I always have your threads on 'I'm watching' and even my husband who has absolutely no interest in mumsnet always asked what you've got to say

RafaistheKingofClay · 24/02/2023 18:57

Please stay OYBBK. MN wouldn’t be the same without the weather threads.

HopefullyHQ will eventually see some sense and reverse some of the terrible decisions they’ve made about the sex topic.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2023 19:11

I really hope so Rafa.

In the mean time, are there any website designers lurking on the thread please that I can chat to by dm?

OP posts:
Notonthestairs · 24/02/2023 19:50

I suspect their contract with Ann Summers required them to change aspects of the Sex topic to drive traffic. They won't be able to get out of it without some legal/financial issues.

It's got nothing to do with MN users. I doubt those on the Sex topic were particularly concerned whether the threads appeared in Active.

If/when you leave keep us posted.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2023 19:53

I suspect you are right Notonthestairs.

Thank you @OhYouBadBadKitten - just realised I forgot to upload the photos I referred to, so here they are.

Also @OhYouBadBadKitten I haven't read your posts about the sex topics appearing in active. (It doesn't bother me, personally, but I hadn't considered the very valid point someone made about being triggered). Please don't leave though. Can you work around and avoid the active page if it's upsetting you? Purely selfish reasons for asking, I'm sorry!

I do think you've established an unusually important role here on MN however as your posts are very illuminating when it comes to the real and present effects of climate change. You make it personal in a way that numerous headlines don't, we become desensitised to them. And I think posters here 'listen' to you in a way they may not elsewhere, because they make the choice to read and you make complicated data accessible.

It's also impressive that you come across much more of a meteorologist than weather people when you claim its merely a hobby!

I feel the same🙁

PlusLaMeme · 25/02/2023 01:36

@OhYouBadBadKitten I posted on the other thread but repeating here that I would really like to know where this thread decamps to so I can follow it. I've loved the weather talk for years but the recent discussions on passive design have been fascinating. This thread is one my favourites. I don't post much, but that's because I can only log on once a day, so can never get my feet under the table of long-running threads, but I don't want to lose it either xx

IneffableGenderFairy · 25/02/2023 08:09

Joining the queue for PMs if you leave @OhYouBadBadKitten . You really have an exceptional gift for communicating quite complicated concepts: you would be a huge loss to MN Flowers

BiggerBoyMadeMeDoit · 25/02/2023 08:22

What did I miss? Please don’t leave us!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/02/2023 09:58

I feel like a traitor now! (and also worried that I'm coming across as a flouncy drama queen) What I don't want to do is just to leave without anything that I can jump to. I love posting here, it feels like a privilege to share weather info with people.

Biggerboy I don't want to rehash my reasons here, this is our weather space. I've detailed my concerns in site stuff.

GFS does not want to let go of the idea of bringing in cold weather from around 6th March. The latest run doubles down on the idea of bringing in some pretty cold upper air temperatures. Remember, these aren't temperatures that we would feel, but tell us how cold the air mass is and hence what precipitation might come in the form of.

For example the chart below. Once we get to around -10c ish on an 850hPa chart in March, then snow is quite possible where precipitation happens. Daytime temperatures look around to about 5c max, which would allow snow to reach ground level if it is intense enough. However, the chart also looks very dry, with precipitation only in the east.

Remember this is just one model run, some way in advance. I'll try and look at the ensembles later.

OYBK please don't go ,not just because of this thread but because of the balance you bring to the whole site .
Your departure won't impact MNHQ and policies but your continued presence is a force for good and a positive influence .

TheSilveryPussycat · 25/02/2023 11:41

I am happy to report light hail in Durham Smile

Furries · 25/02/2023 11:46

You are definitely not perceived as flouncy. I, too, don’t post often, but I check this board pretty much every day. If you do end up finding a new home then I’d also like to join the queue for a PM. You’re going to need to set up a spreadsheet!

I’ve been holding off on pruning all my roses, hoping that the risk of frost will be gone. Not sure how much longer I can wait.

Notonthestairs · 25/02/2023 11:59

Yes I'm holding off from pruning because it looks like the frosts might return. Annoying isn't it?!

Wow. Whereabouts are you? It's only February. We get frosts till late April here on the NE coast of England.

As the saying goes "Never cast a clout till t' May is out"

Ooh, I'm getting excited for Spring. Made a hedgehog feeding / drinking station yesterday 🦔

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 25/02/2023 12:17

@OhYouBadBadKitten
You're not flouncy. You're right. I'm pretty sick of having adverts for vibrators - and they're MN sponsored, so it's not me

DH really wants to mow the front lawn, it's a bit patchy - I keep telling him NO. I might have to hide the extension lead Grin
The cats think it's summer, they're shedding so much fur. I'll need to change the filters on the dyson soon.

I'm secretly hoping for snow on the 12th - it's my birthday and it would be amazing 😻⛄

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 25/02/2023 12:19

@RainbowZebraWarrior we have hog poo on the patio and back lawn - it wasn't there yesterday. 🦔

Notonthestairs · 25/02/2023 12:24

Rainbow - I'm in Herts. I'll admit I'm an over enthusiastic pruner Grin

Tangomango1 · 25/02/2023 12:39

I am de-lurking to say how sad I am at the thought of you leaving! I also read your threads every day & my husband knows your name now & asks me to check out what you think Smile What a sorry sad situation that posters like you are being driven away!

Grasshopper15 · 25/02/2023 12:40

I too am de-lurking, in fact I've never written anything on Mumsnet before (I'm old and only found Mumsnet when my dc's have dc of their own), but I have learnt a lot over the last 3 or 4 years! Your weather threads have been a "go to" for me - interesting and informative - thank you : ).

Nowt wrong with a bit of gardening enthusiasm! 😁 I am today eagerly awaiting the much anticipated delivery of 3 rose bushes (purchased after reading the 'best performing roses' thread in gardening) I shall be getting very impatient if I don't get a window to plant them soon. I'm distracting myself by potting on Verbena Bonariensis.
