Not quite January yet, but the weather warnings continue. Generally a mild outlook to come, though of course parts of Scotland will see more wintry weather on and off.

I'd miss you if you went badkitten! I read your updates every day and find them very helpful for planning my outdoor work.

Perihelion · 25/02/2023 14:21

OYBBK you would be missed.
I hadn't seen anything about that topic, but I don't use the app and really only come here or chat.
We only had completely mental heat for a few days last summer, but sticking cardboard on the outside of the windows was really effective Wink
Allegedly 6C in Edinburgh, but it feels bitter, with a NE wind. Just as the buds start coming out.

BobBobBobbing · 25/02/2023 15:34

Another one who would miss you (and follow to another site)

The window shutters up thread look interesting. We've huge glass windows facing south which meant we roasted in the last heatwave. The smaller windows I covered in sheets but need to figure out what to do with the huge bay. We've already invested in a repair of the light well at the top of the stairs- it is victorian stained glass sash which we've had repaired and installed in a double glass frame. So now it is wind and water tight for winter and in the summer we'll be able to open the sash and let the heat out of the top of the house.

You are definitely not perceived as flouncy. I, too, don’t post often, but I check this board pretty much every day. If you do end up finding a new home then I’d also like to join the queue for a PM. You’re going to need to set up a spreadsheet!

I’ve been holding off on pruning all my roses, hoping that the risk of frost will be gone. Not sure how much longer I can wait.

I did mine earlier this week. Hoping that being in the SW we will avoid most of the frosts.

megletthesecond · 25/02/2023 16:48

The temp dropped in Hampshire today. Cold wind over parkrun as I finished that's my excuse for not being as quick as I'd hoped this week.

OYBBK if you do decide to go let me know where you head off to. Your advice and explanations of what you've pulled together and why is always so helpful.

BIWI · 25/02/2023 16:48

I'm sorry all this kerfuffle (for want of a non-bannable word!) has made you cry @OhYouBadBadKitten

Like you, I've had enough. But it's caused me a lot of angst, as I've been here for a very long time, and I know I'll really miss checking in each day. I've had PMs about one alternative, but let me know if there's something else you find

I’m a long time lurker too . I’m only de lurking, to add that I’m another who’d be very sad to see you leave. You are so informative and I look for your updates daily. Add me to the growing list of people who’d follow you on to another platform.

justasking111 · 25/02/2023 17:20

Justine has done a U-turn now. Peace restored.

I've been on the dreading summer thread. Some good tips for adapting to summer heat which I used to enjoy but no longer. Having a coffee opposite the castle yesterday the slit windows seems like a good move in new builds

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/02/2023 17:38

Its a very difficult decision isnt it BIWI when youve helped build a community. I know that you must feel very torn too.

For those whove not seen it yet. www.mumsnet.com/talk/site_stuff/4749810-references-to-underage-sex-on-sex-board?reply=124186283

Im going to take some time to reflect and not do anything in haste. But I do have a plan, if it does become time to shift away from here. I dont want to say too much at this point. Thank you so much for everyones loyal support and kind words. We have built a great weather community here and Im glad to be part of it with you all.

In the mean time, I've had a good day out away from it all and especially enjoyed the cloudscapes with towering cumulus (cumulus congestus) and sharp showers.

lm another one who doesn’t post much but checks here daily , Please don’t leave .
I can’t believe how cold it’s been today, it was so warm last Sunday we didn’t need coats when out and about.

nannynick · 25/02/2023 18:47

OYBBK I agree that the decision by MNHQ to put that board on active was inappropriate and it changed the overall tone of the site. We need Weather to be on active, not that board.
Justine seems to have taken some of the response onboard so we should see that board come off active soon.

You are a big part of the weather community here so I would not like to see you leave.

Makinglists · 25/02/2023 21:01

Just wanted to say how much I value and enjoy your posts OYBBK. I love anything to do with weather and I know you will always give clear balanced advice. I'm doing an MA in Environmental Humanities and one of my key areas of interest is the cultural aspects of weather. I may not understand all the scientific aspects but I know a woman who does!!.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/02/2023 21:15

I've sent you a link you might like Makinglists Smile

Kitten I only come on Mumsnet now to see yours and Gloriasmud updates on the weather, I've been on Mumsnet for about 16 years and I've seen it go from an informative and healthy group for parents to a tacky, lewd, attention seeking forum for shit stirrers 😒
Keep doing what you're doing please xx

GloriaSmud · 26/02/2023 13:04

I wasn't aware until a few days ago what had been going on at Mumsnet. I've been here for 18 years and can't believe how it's changed from a 'mostly good parenting forum with a small amount of awful' to how it is now. How can they have got it so wrong?

Netweather's latest thoughts on the SSW.

Abracadabra12345 · 26/02/2023 16:02

@DuchessDandelion Thank you for all your suggestions. I’m going to a shop later next week to talk to them. I don’t think enough people are thinking seriously about ways to protect our homes from heat and glare. In a way, I’m glad we haven’t any blinds yet so can start with a blank slate. Last year, I used white blackout material to line our curtains but you’re right, stopping the glass getting hot in the first place is key. Not sure how to fix external awnings or shutters although I can find out of course but as we are already spending £££ on other things, it might have to be a process.

How do ceiling fans work? I mean, how do they work with existing light fittings? Something else to look into

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/02/2023 16:43

Last summer we ended up hanging sheets outside the windows. It looked crackers, but it did help quite a lot. I don't think we can install shutters easily. Our window/house doesn't lend itself to that, so it will need to be blinds. We've experimented with some perfect fit blinds in one room this week. Pricy, but easy to install for awkward windows.

I mentioned ceiling fans to dh. He wasn't sold, so I'll keep plugging away at the blinds.

Models are still very persistent with their timing for allowing cold air to flood in at the end of next weekend, eastern areas still looking vulnerable for some snow into the following week. Not a beast from the east scenario, but a return to a wintery feel.

Pretty nippy in the garden this afternoon.

Men love science show this to DH @OhYouBadBadKitten 😅

Tricyrtis2022 · 26/02/2023 17:02

We used blinds last summer, as well as drawing the west-facing curtains during the day, and indoors was 10C lower than outside. All windows flung open about 5am and closed about 9am, then opened up again about 12 hours later once the air cooled to a more civilised temperature. That and the air purifier made things bearable. We're also lucky to live in a cave-like house with thick walls.

Tricyrtis2022 · 26/02/2023 17:03

Oh yes, I also use a traditional handheld fan and it's surprisingly effective, as well as pretty.

crosspusscrossstitcher · 26/02/2023 17:07

We had a ceiling fan above our bed.

It freaked me out so we took it down within a few days of moving in (in November). I'm not normally that easily upset, but I think it was waking up in the dark and seeing something dangling above me. 🤦‍♀️

I'm going to hang old duvet covers or sheets (old, clean ones that we use as dust sheets when decorating) over the windows downstairs this year - planning on attaching them to the gutters. I don't care how crackers it looks. It's that or spending £££ on installing aircon in a couple of rooms for maybe 2 or 3 wks a yr.

Tricyrtis2022 · 26/02/2023 17:34

@crosspusscrossstitcher, don't blame you, I'd have taken it down too as I'd be scared of it falling off and landing on the bed in the night.

Re installing aircon, we got one in the hot summer of 2003. Spent ages installing the thing and then set a temperature gauge in the room and, you know what, four hours later the temperature hadn't change at all, it was an expensive and noisy fan. We took it back to the shop.

justasking111 · 26/02/2023 17:51

I liked the air con unit that doubled up as a dehumidifier

crosspusscrossstitcher · 26/02/2023 18:39

OK. You've talked me down from aircon, I think.
Our living room is pretty cool - upstairs was a furnace last summer - so I might just swap our sofa and armchairs for 2 big sofas instead. We can sleep on them and leave the downstairs windows open too.

colouringindoors · 26/02/2023 23:28

I hung heavy thermal blackout fabric outside over my downstairs windows which was really effective. Will be refining my fixings this year and repeating
