We need to talk about the Weather and the potential for extreme heat - PART 2

Old thread: www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat

The old thread was started when models started to introduce model runs with temperatures of 40c several days in advance of when the record breaking heat wave arrived. We chatted about the idea that this has never been seen before in the UK and linked it back to climate change. Meteorologists and weather enthusiasts were horrified when these models actually verified and across the UK record breaking temperatures were seen. We spoke about the risks to infrastructure and health.

Weve also talked about the near drought conditions in parts of southern
England and East Anglia.

We discussed comparisons to 1976 and showed that although 1976 was hot for a prolonged period of time and was extremely dry, reaching back into 1975, that the UK was anomalously warm compared to elsewhere. In contrast, the July 22 heat wave happened amongst a background of extreme heat across Europe and elsewhere. In 1976 the highest recorded temperature was 35.9c, this year it was 40.3c

This thread is a continuation of that discussion.

Disclaimer: I'm a weather enthusiast, not a professional meteorologist. As such, please refer to the Met Office for reliable forecasts.

Looking forward, GFS, supported by several members of the GEFS ensembles show the potential for another heatwave from around the 9th August in the south and Midlands. Nothing as extreme as the July heatwave, but instead introduces several days of above 30c heat with some showing temperatures into the mid or high 30s. At the moment, there isn't sufficient model consensus to say that this is a likely outcome. I'm flagging this as a potential scenario, but not yet an actual forecast.

Photos are a couple of stats from the met office with regards to the dry situation in July.

Level 3 heat health alert. Note the comment about when the heat may start to break down.

What a difference two years makes. South of England plant matter colours.

Another weather related ear worm....virtual ice lollies for correct answers, no googling.

🎤well, I've just about had enough of the sunshine,
hey..what did I hear you say?🎤

flat hotter than Tube, I think.

I have a cooling towel - I think it’s from JML - it’s about the size of a small scarf, you run it under a cold tap, wring it out and it stays cool for ages. I wrap it round my neck. It really helps.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/08/2022 07:36

Morning all.

We still look to be on for the cool down from Monday, though it may take until Tuesday before the SE and EA cool down. A more showery week next week, but I'm not sure that there will be anything like enough useful rain for the drought areas. However, it will at least bring the fire risk back down again.

Looking further ahead, at the moment, it looks like it will warm back up again to very warm or hot temperatures around the 20th.

You've been so helpful and knowledgeable, it is really appreciated. Looking forward to your post that states no more hot weather and nothing but Autumn/Winter pending 😅

EmmaH2022 · 09/08/2022 08:49

Thanks Kitten
I might have to have a party the day it goes below 15!

stillherenow · 09/08/2022 09:02

Well it's nice and cool looking for my holiday so that's fine with me! Either side of the hols I can sit at home in front of a fan!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/08/2022 09:55

@RuralRabbit Grin waiting for the will it snow threads?

Yes please 😂 some snow threads would be lovely. Gloria and I could start sorting out our sledges 🛷🛷

Echoing the thanks from others @OhYouBadBadKitten , you’re a fascinating font of useful knowledge.

Can I ask, when you say returning to very warm or hot around the 20th, what sort of temps are we talking about? I know it’s a bit far out modelling wise.

CrunchyCarrot · 09/08/2022 12:54

I know it’s a bit far out modelling wise.

Anything beyond a week or so is called 'Fantasy Island' on the Netweather forums! This is because forecasting model 'ensembles' (collections of computer 'runs') usually diverge too much to give anything concrete, and so any forecasts are unlikely to come off. So anything goes, really! But we do seem to be stuck in this hot, dry pattern in the S of the UK.

BlackeyedSusan · 09/08/2022 14:42

Not looking forward to this. There is more sunshine than last time, thus more sun on the windows and a hotter flat. So far so good. Only 28 inside which is bearable.

Just rehung the makeshift bathroom curtain as the cable clip fell out of the old drilled holes. Stuck a sliver of old wood back in the hole and hoping it will hold the cable clip for now.

The old duvet has gone back up behind the kitchen blind.

Hoping my neighbour will be ok as she was ill last time.

BlackeyedSusan · 09/08/2022 14:43

DS is playing football in full heat tomorrow. Must get him some sports drinks.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/08/2022 15:18

Crunchy is right, it is a very long way off, so I'd hate to give figures yet. Not like July though!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/08/2022 15:21

And in fact, the ECMWF ensembles don't pick up the warmth in the same way as GFS did, so it's all to play for.
High confidence for very hot this week.
High confidence of a breakdown to cooler more showery weather late this weekend/early next week
After that - uncertain!

Amber extreme heat warnings for Thursday.
Oof. Back to warnings about heat exhaustion, melty electric equipment, wildfire risk etc.

Note the matrix - this will stay at an amber warning even if the event becomes more likely.

Don't worry it will definitely rain on Monday I have a day's annual leave!

Thanks for all the v informative posts, really appreciate the time and effort that goes in to them.

EmmaH2022 · 09/08/2022 17:03

An amber warning....so I'm guessing a red warning for London Fri/Sat when the forecast is even higher.

RayneDance · 09/08/2022 17:14

My area is looking like 36 in next few days.

I can't believe it.

Good point about compost heap.

Mine is at far end of garden next to shed.
I wonder if it's worth filling some watering cans and popping them down there? Or trying to soak it? But house won't reach that far.

RayneDance · 09/08/2022 17:15

BBC says 36 but met office says 33

Words · 09/08/2022 17:43

Blisteringly hot on Sunday followed by four days of rain forecast for me.

I am driving all day Sunday and on holiday Monday to Thursday.

This sort of thing happens to me all the damn time!

Trivial compared to the greater scheme of things, but annoying nevertheless !

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 09/08/2022 17:43

I. Hate. This. Weather. 😡🤬😡🤬
I never thought that the day would come when I would dread hot weather, I was a real sun worshiper when I was younger.
Now I’m retired, with serious heart problems, it completely wipes me out and makes me feel ill. I do everything I can to mange the situation indoors but for me, and many others, it’s a nightmare.
I even considered moving north, that how much it affects me!
