We need to talk about the Weather and the potential for extreme heat - PART 2

Old thread: www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat

The old thread was started when models started to introduce model runs with temperatures of 40c several days in advance of when the record breaking heat wave arrived. We chatted about the idea that this has never been seen before in the UK and linked it back to climate change. Meteorologists and weather enthusiasts were horrified when these models actually verified and across the UK record breaking temperatures were seen. We spoke about the risks to infrastructure and health.

Weve also talked about the near drought conditions in parts of southern
England and East Anglia.

We discussed comparisons to 1976 and showed that although 1976 was hot for a prolonged period of time and was extremely dry, reaching back into 1975, that the UK was anomalously warm compared to elsewhere. In contrast, the July 22 heat wave happened amongst a background of extreme heat across Europe and elsewhere. In 1976 the highest recorded temperature was 35.9c, this year it was 40.3c

This thread is a continuation of that discussion.

Disclaimer: I'm a weather enthusiast, not a professional meteorologist. As such, please refer to the Met Office for reliable forecasts.

Looking forward, GFS, supported by several members of the GEFS ensembles show the potential for another heatwave from around the 9th August in the south and Midlands. Nothing as extreme as the July heatwave, but instead introduces several days of above 30c heat with some showing temperatures into the mid or high 30s. At the moment, there isn't sufficient model consensus to say that this is a likely outcome. I'm flagging this as a potential scenario, but not yet an actual forecast.

Photos are a couple of stats from the met office with regards to the dry situation in July.

It was 28 in central London today and I had to go shopping with teenagers - every shop was boiling.
But I took my Creative Products Cool Touch Ice... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06XKCSNRM?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

with me. I ran it under the cold tap at home put it in a plastic bag and shoved it in my handbag. I just got it out when I felt hot and dabbed my face. It stays lovely and cold. When it’s extremely hot I have it around my neck at home or over me at night. I love it.

@Snowraingain.. thanks for the recommendation and link. Great idea for the heat

Thursday and Friday showing 30 in North London on xcweather. ☹️

There's a great deal of uncertainty about the weather next weekend, but it may well warm back up mid week.

This weekend has been beautifully breezy and cool/warm depending on your perspective. I don't like being sweaty.

Noooooooooo 🙏🙏🙏

EmmaH2022 · 22/08/2022 13:44

Actually our forecast has changed again, is not so bad. And my balcony door is closed, for the first time in ages! Such a relief (noisy road).

EmmaH2022 · 23/08/2022 16:55

Horrible muggy day today
i didn't believe it was going to go up to 28 tomorrow but now I see how it will.

then it looks like a welcome drop to 23.

AlternativelyWired · 23/08/2022 17:49

It's 23 here and sweaty. Feels cool out but any exertion and it's sweaty. Yuck.

BlackeyedSusan · 23/08/2022 19:40

It's raining here. (Pembrokeshire holiday) but the air was thick and muggy.

EmmaH2022 · 24/08/2022 13:15

BlackeyedSusan hopefully better today?

i can see it's going to get up to 28 here.

just looking at my wardrobe - have been stuck in the same limited number of clothes for weeks, it feels like, as I don't have many clothes to accommodate the weather we've had.

cannot wait to need a coat again, never did I think I'd be saying that!

justasking111 · 24/08/2022 13:22

Wales back to the usual wet August. September is normally a better month for weather. Wearing the same clothes yep. Washing machine doing the same clothes for weeks now. I've been having eye ops since mid March on my eyes so sunshine has been abandoned this year. I'm in sunglasses indoors

EmmaH2022 · 24/08/2022 13:25

just hope you are 100% soon

forecast is showing this 28 as the last high temp....just really hope this is it.

I'm very relieved by the shorter days, facing southwest has meant the sun shining into the flat till practically 10pm.

i so don't want to be stuck here next summer but sadly it wouldn't surprise me.

Same here - I have three work dresses that are cool enough for the hot weather, and I've been wearing them on rotation! Managed to wear something different on Monday as it was cooler.

Also have three non-work dresses for days off, also on rotation! Sick of it.

EmmaH2022 · 24/08/2022 18:57

Thanks Kitten
will be great to have some rain but hopefully not the havoc that we had last week.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 24/08/2022 19:06

It rained overnight on Monday here, and it was raining when I left for work early this morning too. Obviously, we need more rain!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/08/2022 00:28

I think some will see havoc Emma

Too boiling hot and uncomfortable for various reasons for sleep tonight.

Oh dear, sorry to hear that
Have you got anything to help with sleep?

I don't have to commute tomorrow - which is lucky after the last disaster.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/08/2022 00:44

I've taken some painkillers, so hopefully they will kick in. Good that you don't need to commute tomorrow. It's possible that parts of London will have a direct hit.

hope you get some sleep.

Good nigh Emma, you too.

Finally it’s raining here in south Cambs.
sounds amazing. It’s so needed.
I can hear the distant rumble of thunder. So peaceful.
