We need to talk about the Weather and the potential for extreme heat - PART 2

Old thread: www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat

The old thread was started when models started to introduce model runs with temperatures of 40c several days in advance of when the record breaking heat wave arrived. We chatted about the idea that this has never been seen before in the UK and linked it back to climate change. Meteorologists and weather enthusiasts were horrified when these models actually verified and across the UK record breaking temperatures were seen. We spoke about the risks to infrastructure and health.

Weve also talked about the near drought conditions in parts of southern
England and East Anglia.

We discussed comparisons to 1976 and showed that although 1976 was hot for a prolonged period of time and was extremely dry, reaching back into 1975, that the UK was anomalously warm compared to elsewhere. In contrast, the July 22 heat wave happened amongst a background of extreme heat across Europe and elsewhere. In 1976 the highest recorded temperature was 35.9c, this year it was 40.3c

This thread is a continuation of that discussion.

Disclaimer: I'm a weather enthusiast, not a professional meteorologist. As such, please refer to the Met Office for reliable forecasts.

Looking forward, GFS, supported by several members of the GEFS ensembles show the potential for another heatwave from around the 9th August in the south and Midlands. Nothing as extreme as the July heatwave, but instead introduces several days of above 30c heat with some showing temperatures into the mid or high 30s. At the moment, there isn't sufficient model consensus to say that this is a likely outcome. I'm flagging this as a potential scenario, but not yet an actual forecast.

Photos are a couple of stats from the met office with regards to the dry situation in July.

Kitten yes, I remembered you said it would be hot again from 20th? I'm supposed to do a seaside day trip with some friends but I asked them to delay till September as I don't fancy Brighton on a heatwave day. Nor the BH weekend.

RagzRebooted · 14/08/2022 20:39

Again?!
Seriously considering moving northwards in a few years, for several reasons but summer heat being one of them. However I assumed Shropshire would be far enough, but it was a hot there as here so DH may get his wish of moving to Scotland!

Bloody radiators in 2 of our bedrooms come on with the hot water, have tried fixing several times but no luck. It's not helping! Upstairs is horrible. At one point I was sat downstairs by the front door as its so cool down there (townhouse style house, front door is lower level with 1st floor being ground level at the back) but the smell of teen boys feet from the shoe rack meant I didn't last long!

Snowraingain · 14/08/2022 20:54

Hot again? When??? Nooooo

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/08/2022 21:17

Some of the models seem to keep introducing the idea of another round of heat, but with varying start dates towards the end of the month.

Thunder, lightning and rain here in South Cumbria 👍🙏😊

Enjoy!

FatherJacksBrick · 15/08/2022 11:36

It's just started hammering down in the South West. Yasssss!

GloriaSmud · 15/08/2022 11:47

We've just had a brief shower here (Leicester) We all just stood at the windows watching and I said, "Never has rain caused such excitement!"

Plasmodesmata · 15/08/2022 12:39

Still 24 and sunny here. We have the promise of potential thunder later.

stuntbubbles · 15/08/2022 12:41

Still no rain in south London. All the promises of such have gone from my weather app; high of 28 today. Allegedly we’ll get the thunderstorm on Wednesday but it feels like waiting for Godot at this point.

EmmaH2022 · 15/08/2022 12:46

stunt spot on!

I knew today would be a let down.

didn't manage a walk before work as I didn't sleep till about 5. Two clients are telling me they're not well from the heat,

flat is still boiling. Reports are still for rain later but I don't believe it. My bones ache, strangely. Maybe from accumulated lack of sleep?

i did do weights and stretching yesterday so I haven't been totally immobile.

it looks like Weds might be better, then Thursday climbing back up to 27.

seriously considering a lunchtime nap.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/08/2022 12:53

Prospects don't look great for rain today for many in the south east. The rain I've marked in the west won't really make inroads. But I think some showers will pop up here and there. Looking up at the sky I can see some instability that holds promise. If your sky looks a bit chaotic, then that's a sign of instability. It doesn't guarantee showers for you though!

Overcast in Manchester - warm and humid but cooler than yesterday. Downstairs is still 26 degrees, upstairs 31!

All windows open - and 2 washings on the line!

Just waiting for the rain

justasking111 · 15/08/2022 13:00

Well Ireland has had rain but n Wales it's going to be patchy showers. 21c outside 23c indoors. Looking at Ventusky it's really not good rain wise for the UK

tapdancingmum · 15/08/2022 13:04

I've just had enough spots in Bucks to put some stuff away but it's now disappeared and the sun is back out. Good job I'm gardening in my bikini 😮

BlackeyedSusan · 15/08/2022 13:06

Feel hot and sweaty presumably due to high Humidity. 29 inside.

Though weirdly had a bit of a worry about keeping the flat warm earlier. Then got too hot so that disappeared.

InMySpareTime · 15/08/2022 13:31

Just had a 10 minute rain shower in Manchester. Not enough to wet anything, but just enough to raise the humidity.
Was nice to walk in though, quite refreshing after being so hot for so long.

beenrumbled · 15/08/2022 13:56

@InMySpareTime local weather is weird - no rain in my corner of Manchester (yet) - playing russian roulette with my washing Grin

beenrumbled · 15/08/2022 14:14

Although DS1 at his student house in Fallowfield said it rained about 45 minute ago and he sat out in it!

GloriaSmud · 15/08/2022 14:19

We had another shower here (Leicester) about 30 mins ago. I've just taken FosterDog out for a short walk and the ground isn't just wet, there are small puddles. I can't remember when I last saw those!

Snowraingain · 15/08/2022 14:36

No rain in my part of London.
I still feel.boiling.

EmmaH2022 · 15/08/2022 14:58

I wonder how colouring is

I don’t know how to feel better. I’m about to take some ibuprofen. I can’t keep hopping in the shower as my eczema is flaring up.

EmmaH2022 · 15/08/2022 16:15

A pp mentioned Scotland
i just looked

it does look to be having fairly normal summer temps there

Edinburgh festival is not for more but looks like there's some brilliant ghost tours!

colouringindoors · 15/08/2022 16:59

thanks for wondering @EmmaH2022 x

I am now on 4th course antibiotics for a uti Ive had for over 2 weeks i think exacerbated by heat as no matter how much i drink i sweat half of it out....

Been in bed all day.

Headachy and fed up! About to get some (more) ice cream!

colouringindoors · 15/08/2022 17:12

emma have you got any Dioralyte/similar. Electrolytes can get out of balance in this heat which can make you feel rubbish too
