We need to talk about the Weather and the potential for extreme heat - PART 2

Old thread: www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat

The old thread was started when models started to introduce model runs with temperatures of 40c several days in advance of when the record breaking heat wave arrived. We chatted about the idea that this has never been seen before in the UK and linked it back to climate change. Meteorologists and weather enthusiasts were horrified when these models actually verified and across the UK record breaking temperatures were seen. We spoke about the risks to infrastructure and health.

Weve also talked about the near drought conditions in parts of southern
England and East Anglia.

We discussed comparisons to 1976 and showed that although 1976 was hot for a prolonged period of time and was extremely dry, reaching back into 1975, that the UK was anomalously warm compared to elsewhere. In contrast, the July 22 heat wave happened amongst a background of extreme heat across Europe and elsewhere. In 1976 the highest recorded temperature was 35.9c, this year it was 40.3c

This thread is a continuation of that discussion.

Disclaimer: I'm a weather enthusiast, not a professional meteorologist. As such, please refer to the Met Office for reliable forecasts.

Looking forward, GFS, supported by several members of the GEFS ensembles show the potential for another heatwave from around the 9th August in the south and Midlands. Nothing as extreme as the July heatwave, but instead introduces several days of above 30c heat with some showing temperatures into the mid or high 30s. At the moment, there isn't sufficient model consensus to say that this is a likely outcome. I'm flagging this as a potential scenario, but not yet an actual forecast.

Photos are a couple of stats from the met office with regards to the dry situation in July.

or crisps followed by ice cream 😉

EmmaH2022 · 15/08/2022 17:21

colouring I did wonder if you were stuck in bed. Really hope things improve for you.

I am having Dioralyte every day at the mo. I am not sure it's helping though!

mum seems quite cross that neighbours are checking on her - she'd rather they checked in winter 😂

colouringindoors · 15/08/2022 17:26

Thanks x I really appreciate it. I'm peri menopausal and the increase heat intolerance & sweating has def contributed to the uti. And the memory probs and brain fog almost lost me my new job! Roll cold + hrt 🙏🙏🙏

If you're still feeling rough with Dioralyte I'd def take max doses of ibuprofen and paracetamol and try and rest as much as possible. Thus heat, for such a long period is really debilitating. Some meds - like antidepressants, blood pressure stuff also make heat intolreance worse.

EmmaH2022 · 15/08/2022 17:33

colouring also peri and take ADs. I'm desperate for some exercise, I managed 4 miles a day in the 2018 heatwave but this time I struggle to walk one mile, I just feel so headachy and stomachy.

i hear D-mannose is good for preventing uti but I am not sure if it's any use during them.

colouringindoors · 15/08/2022 17:37

ADs here too. Yeah I've used that for preventative but hasn't helped with infection unfortunately.

Have you got a pool nearby you could chill in and do a couple of gentle lengths?

colouringindoors · 15/08/2022 17:39

I was working as a gardener in the mornings til a week ago. Beyond sweaty 😅

No pools without all the hassle of a Tube trip.

Londoners, what temps are you seeing for the next few days? Xcweather and accuweather have high 20s and sun for my postcode. Wundergriund has low 20s and rain.

This is my forecast, outer reaches of Zone 6.

That's the Met Office, the only one I bother with 😂

BooseysMom · 15/08/2022 19:28

Hello from Midlands (Worcs). We had a whole 2 hours of drizzly rain earlier but the ground is still as concrete as ever. I work 12 miles away and only saw a few spots. Very relieved the oppressive heat has finally given up. It's lovely and fresh at last.

EmmaH2022 · 15/08/2022 20:58

STOP PRESS

there is air coming through the window.

TokyoSushi · 15/08/2022 21:07

I've just popped a blanket over my legs, what a difference a day makes!

beenrumbled · 15/08/2022 21:18

We had a little bit of rain about 3.30 but it didn't wet the ground and my washing was ok to stay out. Dots of rain this evening but it never came to anything. Still 26 degrees downstairs and its 29 upstairs.

CrunchyCarrot · 15/08/2022 21:22

Barely a sprinkle of rain this morning and a big area of rain on the radar has just missed us entirely! So still very dry although cooling down. House is still hot but at least a bit of a breeze has sprung up.

the air has brought the flat down to 30. But it's nice to have air.

if I wasn't pooped and if there was a green space near enough I'd go for a walk.

EmmaH2022 · 15/08/2022 22:56

Oh dear
air has been replaced by wall of humidity

went for walk, still horrible, at 10.30!

colouringindoors · 15/08/2022 23:06

I have RAIN 🌧 😁🙏

Are you in Bucks? I fell asleep on the sofa and woke up to a FB post from a weather guy saying it had rained. Have just been outside and the top of the bin is wet. The ground is damp but not much.

Hope we get some more.

colouringindoors · 15/08/2022 23:15

yes! not much, but some!

Doghairismyglitter · 15/08/2022 23:17

So envious of all those with cooler temperatures 😩 was genuinely excited for a cooler day today; but it’s still been absolutely boiling. Gone 11pm and dripping in sweat. Strangely less than a mile away actually flooded with extremely heavy rain.. not a drop here and no breeze!
If there’s another heatwave end of the month I think I will be broken. Cannot cope with it.

tapdancingmum · 15/08/2022 23:22

colouringindoors · 15/08/2022 23:15

Hope you are feeling better? I off to town (HW) tomorrow so if you need anything and are close to that one I can get it for you.

EmmaH2022 · 15/08/2022 23:22

Doghair are you in London too?

colouring yay! Do you have a garden? I would so sit out in rain if I had a garden.

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 15/08/2022 23:54

The BBC has stopped forecasting rain in our area. It's very warm and humid here.

Lemonblossom · 16/08/2022 00:29

We had an hour of drizzle earlier but now the 24 hours of rain we were forecast from this evening has disappeared and tomorrow looks mainly dry. East Mids
