Old thread: www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat

The old thread was started when models started to introduce model runs with temperatures of 40c several days in advance of when the record breaking heat wave arrived. We chatted about the idea that this has never been seen before in the UK and linked it back to climate change. Meteorologists and weather enthusiasts were horrified when these models actually verified and across the UK record breaking temperatures were seen. We spoke about the risks to infrastructure and health.

Weve also talked about the near drought conditions in parts of southern
England and East Anglia.

We discussed comparisons to 1976 and showed that although 1976 was hot for a prolonged period of time and was extremely dry, reaching back into 1975, that the UK was anomalously warm compared to elsewhere. In contrast, the July 22 heat wave happened amongst a background of extreme heat across Europe and elsewhere. In 1976 the highest recorded temperature was 35.9c, this year it was 40.3c

This thread is a continuation of that discussion.

Disclaimer: I'm a weather enthusiast, not a professional meteorologist. As such, please refer to the Met Office for reliable forecasts.

Looking forward, GFS, supported by several members of the GEFS ensembles show the potential for another heatwave from around the 9th August in the south and Midlands. Nothing as extreme as the July heatwave, but instead introduces several days of above 30c heat with some showing temperatures into the mid or high 30s. At the moment, there isn't sufficient model consensus to say that this is a likely outcome. I'm flagging this as a potential scenario, but not yet an actual forecast.

Photos are a couple of stats from the met office with regards to the dry situation in July.

The weather has well and truly broken in Cornwall. Driving down the A30 over Bodmin Moor in near 0 visibility with the spray and rain. Drove past three crashes in quick succession.

Been at the Eden Project. Lighting tripped a power station somewhere apparently and the whole place went down!

BlackeyedSusan · 16/08/2022 18:25

Wmids. We have rain!

RuralRabbit · 16/08/2022 20:34

Heavy rain and thunder in Warwickshire, it was glorious 😍

RuralRabbit · 16/08/2022 20:36

And I'm already in bed, with a duvet, window open, cold breeze. Was so sick of having fan on all night just spreading muggy heat around.
Feels so nice to be in pj's in the duvet. Makes me SO excited for Autumn!

justasking111 · 16/08/2022 22:46

Beautiful sights and sounds a few minutes ago it's raining hallelujah

RayneDance · 16/08/2022 23:11

InMySpareTime · 17/08/2022 06:35

Woke up to puddles in my street in Manchester. Never did I think I'd be glad to see puddles, but times are strange.

beenrumbled · 17/08/2022 06:38

Rain in my corner of Manchester too - not very heavy, but everything is wet!

So happy to see it

nottalot · 17/08/2022 07:26

Overcast and muggy here. We need a proper storm!

Bowednotbroken · 17/08/2022 07:26

Lots of rain yesterday, overnight and some this morning in West Yorkshire. Really good to see!

Bowednotbroken · 17/08/2022 07:27

No thunder though.

borntobequiet · 17/08/2022 08:07

Rained steadily for about 4 hours yesterday evening, becoming fairly heavy, here in S Worcs. Now raining again. Not torrential though, a good thing because the roads flood rapidly with the run off from the higher ground if it is.

Words · 17/08/2022 08:16

I am on holiday near you @borntobequiet. Trying not to be too sad about the weather as I know it's needed. It has rather messed with my plans though.

I do seem to be cursed weather wise, as this happens so often. So if anyone needs rain, tell me where you are and I will book a trip!

borntobequiet · 17/08/2022 08:31

Words you should set yourself up as a rainmaker, charge for your talents and use the proceeds to fund other holidays somewhere guaranteed to be warm and dry!

nannynick · 17/08/2022 09:42

What rain? I think my part of Surrey has a rain shield.
Weather app yesterday said rain all day today. Woke up, no rain. Now app is saying rain from 3pm. Let's see if that becomes reality.

We had showers around 11pm last night and that was it. Ground still rock hard and the fields this morning were dry (Herts).

Toosadtocomprehend · 17/08/2022 12:32

Amber warning now for south east …..anyone had a storm yet ?

Rumblings on the south east coast, I want he'd the lightning radar and the storm came across from France, which had loads of them. Seems to have touched down as a few strikes inland. Sky grey but no rain (we got a bit last night but not much).

RagzRebooted · 17/08/2022 12:37

Actually just started raining as I wrote that!

RagzRebooted · 17/08/2022 14:13

It's been raining torrentially for over an hour. Rumblings and flashes. DD, Dcat2 and I are loving it.

Aw, cats looking at rain.

from what I can see of the forecast, next week is pretty hot, high 20s and the next week is more low 20s. Just really hoping the possible late August heatwave Kitten mentioned isn't going to happen.

colouringindoors · 18/08/2022 18:43

@EmmaH2022 god me too 🤞🤞🤞 are you feeling any less ill now?

@EmmaH2022 god me too 🤞🤞🤞 are you feeling any less ill now?

Only just now feeling better but yesterday it took me three hours to get home, mostly on the Tube, so today has been a struggle. How are you feeling?

I am seeing temps of 28 for London next week. I actually looked to see if there were any hotels nearby with air con but no. I found the air con throughout the hotel I worked in last week to be excellent. A lot of places have it on too high but it was perfectly pitched, even in the conference room where there's usually at least one person too cold!

the portable air con noise was driving me mad. If I am still stuck here next year,
I will seriously consider losing part of the kitchen for one of those water fitted things. I actually considered getting rid of the cooker to make more space before!

EmmaH2022 · 18/08/2022 19:27

I mean, the portable air con noise in my flat, sorry that wasn't clear.
