We need to talk about the Weather and the potential for extreme heat - PART 2

Old thread: www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat

The old thread was started when models started to introduce model runs with temperatures of 40c several days in advance of when the record breaking heat wave arrived. We chatted about the idea that this has never been seen before in the UK and linked it back to climate change. Meteorologists and weather enthusiasts were horrified when these models actually verified and across the UK record breaking temperatures were seen. We spoke about the risks to infrastructure and health.

Weve also talked about the near drought conditions in parts of southern
England and East Anglia.

We discussed comparisons to 1976 and showed that although 1976 was hot for a prolonged period of time and was extremely dry, reaching back into 1975, that the UK was anomalously warm compared to elsewhere. In contrast, the July 22 heat wave happened amongst a background of extreme heat across Europe and elsewhere. In 1976 the highest recorded temperature was 35.9c, this year it was 40.3c

This thread is a continuation of that discussion.

Disclaimer: I'm a weather enthusiast, not a professional meteorologist. As such, please refer to the Met Office for reliable forecasts.

Looking forward, GFS, supported by several members of the GEFS ensembles show the potential for another heatwave from around the 9th August in the south and Midlands. Nothing as extreme as the July heatwave, but instead introduces several days of above 30c heat with some showing temperatures into the mid or high 30s. At the moment, there isn't sufficient model consensus to say that this is a likely outcome. I'm flagging this as a potential scenario, but not yet an actual forecast.

Photos are a couple of stats from the met office with regards to the dry situation in July.

Local military range on fire again. Never really went out, been smouldering and reigniting for weeks. We need rain but the ground isso dry it will just run off and cause flooding I expect.

We are having issues with the infrastructure here in South Cambs.
No electricity all day Thursday due to the sun station overheating and blowing the fuses.
reinstated on Thursday eve.
now the internet has gone down on Friday morning. Working from home is proving very challenging. Im
having to borrow friends offices to do my video sessions with clients.
im considering getting a portable wifi thingy.
my neighbours are still on a generator due to the electric not being back on yet.

this is going to happen more and more.

Real feel for those with no power

the flat came down to 26 about 4am, 28 by 7am. Ugh.

EmmaH2022 · 13/08/2022 08:48

*really

BlackeyedSusan · 13/08/2022 09:28

Flat got down to 28 overnight.(room with thermometer which is cooler as downstairs) 28 feels cool now in comparison. Bloody knackered though as drove yesterday.

Teen had the fan on over night as I conked out before him. I usually turn it off.

BlackeyedSusan · 13/08/2022 09:29

(duplex flat facing west south west)

West mids.

EmmaH2022 · 13/08/2022 10:21

Can I face the bus ride to the cinema for the air con?

that will be one if those decisions that makes itself I guess.

justasking111 · 13/08/2022 11:10

Woke early this morning well before seven. Dog pacing. When I let him out there was a strong smell of burning. Have to admit it made me twitchy. The hills around us are poor quality fauna wise but there are sheep and lambs up there

CrunchyCarrot · 13/08/2022 12:06

We back onto common land so fire is also a concern here, too. Scary.

A very welcome sight today and that's cirrus clouds (W.Midlands). For those who don't know, they are very high ice clouds, those swirly, wispy ones like 'mare's tails'. The winds in the higher atmosphere are faster so the arrival of those clouds indicates the weather is going to change and there's rain on the way. I hope there will be a good soaking for everyone who needs it!

colouringindoors · 13/08/2022 13:37

Bed bound. Can feel the intensity of the heat from my window despite blinds (lined) down and windows closed. Not going to look at temp!

PeloAddict · 13/08/2022 14:06

My neighbour asked if I was ok as I had my windows shut
It's 30c outside, 24c in my flat, they're staying shut!

BlackeyedSusan · 13/08/2022 14:54

Oh no, poor you @colouringindoors

colouringindoors · 13/08/2022 15:03

Thank you xx am having a seriously rubbish time at the mo.

Oh no, that's no fun at all. Flowers

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/08/2022 15:35

I'm really sorry to hear that @colouringindoors I hope you feel better soon.

Thunderstorm warnings extended across the country Monday and more of them on Tuesday (though not quite where I expected for Tuesday)

Ideally you need something outside the window to stop the sun 🌞 hitting it in the first place.

If the pane stays cool your ahead.

EmmaH2022 · 13/08/2022 16:00

<sits on hands to avoid being rude>

colouring sorry to hear that.

still haven't decided re cinema. Might not be able to face bus journey. Maybe tomorrow? Actually think today might be better than yesterday but as SW facer, it's too early to tell.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/08/2022 16:06

Think we should all run away and make our own mountain retreat commune. A place with forests and streams and maybe a glacier to play on.

stuntbubbles · 13/08/2022 16:18

And a lake, please. I am also bedbound with Covid while pregnant, sweating bullets, no energy for a cool shower or bath – so doing my bit for the drought, I guess! – and daydreaming of a breeze, of shade on a warm day (warm, not boiling like now!), and a cool lake. And the energy to dive into it 🥵

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/08/2022 16:33

We can definitely have a lake Stunt. Sorry, that sounds like extra rubbish too.

We will have a cocktail bar, with crisps and mountain cheeses and cute little marmots whistling at us. Maybe a caribou wandering past. Might be muddling mountains up, but it's our retreat and we can have whatever the hell we like.

Any other requests?

At 5.45am I was at the park with my dog. Just briefly - for about ten minutes - I felt a bit chilly. It was bliss. I have my wet cooling towel and I’m considering going to lay on the dogs (£35) cooling blanket she only ever lays next to not on.

colouringindoors · 13/08/2022 16:39

27 inside downstairs, 36 in shade on patio.

yep. Have done that downstairs. But I would risk breaking my neck falling from 1st floor onto patio if i implement the same system upstairs 😅

Chocolate ice cream.

I'm happy to mix cocktails. We can have fruit with it? Melon is nice with a daquiri. Pineapple with a mint julep.

EmmaH2022 · 13/08/2022 16:49

We could call it Bar Aestivation.

not very catchy though.
